So you do have a magic carpet and a magic lamps!!
And Aladino!!
That means that from now on everything Will be great and Magic!
Have good vacations.
The boat looks better and better each week! Those lamps are great, such a nice gift. If you have a wish list of parts you could put it on your web site. No telling what people have lying around.
Dear Sailing Magic Carpet couple.
👍👌👏 I'm deeply impressed again how you two power through all the difficulties and work. Especially after the unknown additional Balsa wood mold problem. Congrats for being so powerful and disciplined. I will absolutely love to see you having a little bit of fun on the water at last. You definitely deserve it (and more).
Those oil lamps are gorgeous!
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health.
Still trying to stop thinking about the Balsa core of our boat... Great job, thank you very much for sharing. As a native Washingtonian, I also really enjoy the small glimpses of WA stuff - like the Olympic National Park t-shirt. Wishing you happy sailing, it's pretty hot over here so if you need something cooler come sail in Sweden - it's lovely here and no tides to worry about.
I have one word for those lamps. WOW! Priceless keepsakes from your fans.
This the first time in my 65 years that I've seen a Davy lamp lit. They were used down coal mine here in northeast England because the are safe. Enjoy. I love you both ❤️
I'm a oil lamp collector. And there is one basic thing you should know about them. It refers to the wick. And it is easy to do. The shorter the wick protrudes from the burner, the less smoke it generates and the longer it lives.
Of course, you have to find the sweet spot between bright light and as less smoke as possible. Because the length of the wick above the burner defines the brightness of the lamp - but also how much smoke it generates.
What can be said of you two, you both are dreamers with back aches! As my grand would said! You dream in a waking manner of actions. Lovely 😍 video
Welcome to Europe 😉I won't disturb you both, but looking out for you while i am sailing. Hope to see you over there.
Great to see you on the best side of all the hard work. Getting to the first of the finished surfaces is a great step. You've both worked so hard. It's lovely to see such quality. Safe travels.
MAGIC CARPET ll is looking AWESOME and the two new old lanterns will be sooo sweet to have aboard... It will be nice for you two to have some actual sailing coming up and hope you'll include us along.. please!!!?
Bon courage you two! Your dedication and hard work will pay off in time. Your work is impeccable and your boat will be dreamy when it is all done. We admire you very much!
along with your meticulous craftsmanship it's so great that you two celebrate, express and detail the different elements, woods and joinery at every opportunity!...SV MC II is carefully becoming both your new home and wonderful art!!
I think the second lamp you received is called a Davy Lamp, a lamp used by miners underground as it's safe in gaseous and damp environments and is safe if tipped over. A nice find!
Yes it is - my parents have a couple
Weems&Plath Lantern is an Anchor Light.
If its a Sir Humphrey Davie lamp it should have a fine mesh screen that surrounds the flame to prevent the flame propagating to any explosive gas in the air..methane in the case of coalmines and coal dust.
Paul, you are right I think I have a 60 year old one that belong to my dad, he was a mining engineer in Belgium and was used to go down in the coal mines!
The Weems and Plath lamp is styled after a mining lamp. Living in Wales, we see many of the original ones still around. Even though it is not an original mining lamp, it is still very high quality with some of the same safety features (enclosed wind-proof flame, no build-up of gas, etc). What a great gift.
I agree with you, there certainly is something special with an oil lamp.
A helpful tip: On another boat building channel they used a silicone cooking spatula to do their fillets. It makes beautiful fillets without having to go back and clean up the excess from the top and bottom edges. Also nothing sticks to the silicone, so you can use it for a long time.
That's a great solution, just don't confuse the epoxy with some cake mixture!
The way you keep smiling is an inspiration to any body tackling a big job.... Great to see you both with smiles...... And some sailing coming up... Awesome..... If I am not mistaken that lamp is a "Coal miners safety lamp"..... designed to be safe in a gas filled mine.... So will be perfect for you to use inside the Beautiful MC2...... :-))) xxxx
I know full well how it is when things go south fast and i could not watch the full episode the last time. But i am happy you are here again, remember fragility needs embracement, so don't make difficult times hard on your soul. All the best to you two!!
Those lamps are also made to generate heat at the light up, doing double duty. I found that many years ago when I found a box of lanterns at at flea market and bought them, sadly they are gone now as some asshole stole them while I was moving, but what I learned was that in a smaller room, one generated a bit of hit and it was enough to push back both a bit of cold, but also the typical wet feeling that comes sometime when you are in a boat without heat and it's raining.
Both were were beautiful, but I imagine the second one to be better at heating. Keep up the good work and remember to have fun.
What a find with the lamps! They add a warmth that can't be achieved any other way.
Great episode with lots if progress made! Looking forward to next weeks video. Europe here you come!
Can't wait for next episode and the completion of MC2! That lamp will really add to the boat's character.
Fair Winds, Following Seas, and have fun in Europe,
-J
Out of the whole video, I loved the small piece about the oil lamps. The poem you quickly strung together, the music, and it became a beautiful romantic story in my head, I saw myself in that moment, job well done, again!
It’s coming along. I can’t wait to see you sail Magic Carpet II. I will certainly settle for seeing you sail Magic Carpet I. Thank you for sharing your beautiful boat with us.
I see that Europe is having a water shortage but I'm sure you're there now and know what the situation is better than I. Have fun!
You two are the best..... y’all are very blessed to have each other!!
That second lamp you showed us is known here in UK as a miners safety lamp. They were developed specifically to try to reduce the risk of explosion in coal mines due to the buildup of noxious gases & the use of naked flames. Far too many miners died before Humphrey Davy, in Cornwall, came up with the first type of safety lamp.
And they were also a relief for the birds used in detecting gases.
When lighting an oil lamp never lower a cold globe onto the burner. Hold the globe above for a short time to warm the glass. Modern day globes are not very robust and can crack easily if they are put on cold. Great work. As said before the Weems and Plath isn’t a riding light it’s a cabin light. The second lamp isn’t a true Davey lamp as usable in an explosive atmosphere it too is a cabin lamp.
I'm with you the lanterns are so cool. The time has past so very fast for the two of you a change of view is surely due. I'm looking forward to what's in store. Safe travels.
More gorgeous boat work performed meticulously. I hope if you are already in the Netherlands that you are staying safe and unaffected by the happenings there.
I love your resilience. Kick in the gut, take a breath, and make major progress. Nice to have the lure of time on the water in Europe. I imagine that helps propel you through this final push. As always, a very lovely episode.
Great progress on to your forced break. Keep spirits up it all moves forward.
Mahagony mahogany, wall bulkhead who cares tis your boat call it what you want. I just thoroughly enjoy you two in all your ventures. The way you two gell together is a joy. Looking forward to a wet bottom sorry keel!
Awesome lamps! Everything is coming along nicely and the meticulous work is not lost on me. Great job you two!
Many years ago I went to a dinner party at Cecil Lange's with Lin and Larry Pardey. Being a neophyte at actually sailing, I was shocked to hear Lin call the lines and shrouds on their boat "ropes." With the benefit of a few more decades I've come to the realization that anyone who has sailed around Cape Horn the wrong way on a 30 foot boat as those folks did can call them anything they want!
ps: Only a few of us old farts still know the difference between a ceiling and a overhead---! And modern boats don't have bulkheads--- Instead they have pop in liners.
May the doors to Europe be open to you this summer!
A-ha! I just commented on that piece of trivia elsewhere, I think I know that one. One could hang a painting on a bulkhead or the ceiling just as well although it might fall to the cabin sole off of the nail when heeling enough. Heel a lot more and you could walk almost upright on the opposite ceiling..!
Taking a break from your huge heartbreaking discovery is well deserved. 👍
Awesome progress this week!!! And, safe travels to Europe!!
The transformation is amazing, looking really good now, I am sure the end result will be amazing
We have similar oil lamps on our boat, they are so nice on a cool evening. Actually provides heat to drive the chill away.
Absolutely loved the song “calm yourself down”. I immediately purchased it. Fantastic episode!
No one can paint a visual in the mind using words better than you can (re: the lantern).
I always love your music choices!
We look forward to all your adventures
I think the pain staking detail that the two of you put into your work, is a reflection of your souls. Knowing that, I can say," you are two beautiful souls".... Thank you for sharing! PS I would sure love to hear some more fiddle songs.... Just saying...
Honestly I really want to see mc1 on the water in the sun light and the full refit glory and all that shiny new varnish
Do you guys get many visitors? Pt. Townsend is such a special place. Safe travels
I have been enjoying watching your channel (even though I am a meathead motovlogger who knows zero about boats). Very cool to see the boat come back to life, it's going to be great. (Aladino has such a great, chill attitude - I need to take some lessons, lol).
Love you two. Can't wait to see you getting back to sailing again.
As usual you are an inspiration for me as I continue my project toward reaching the sea and hopefully one day meeting you both.
In advance wishing both of you a well deserved vacation !!! Enjoy MC I
Love the lamps !! She’s looking wonderful and your doing such a great job.thanks for taking us with you!!
Fair winds ⛵️
Amazing progress, MC2 is going to look after you for many years to come!
Really enjoy your videos. Thank you so much.
Great progress and beautiful lamps you received. Bummer that you have to leave the U.S. and cannot just keep working, if you feel like it.
Love the photography, music and storytelling, 10/10 😃
I almost choked on my cheerios when Aladeno was sanding. Talk about dedication to the final product...seems like its not long now ...
Great episode! More progress! Keep rolling MC2 crew!! 👍👍
Its going to be so wonderful! I cannot wait to see you guys sailing her in blue waters!
Thumbs up, thumbs up, thumbs up!!!!
Aladdin and his Magic Lamp episode! ( it’s rubbing off on me too!)
I’m sure you’ve already heard about the Cape George skippered by Kirsten Neuschafer entered the 2022 Golden Globe Race. It’s the first Cape George to ever be entered. Go Kirs/Cape George. 👍👍👍
Hi, great progress on magic carpet 2. I just want to say, keep going and have fun in Europe. The second lamp is a mine lamp, but a great gift. Greets from the Netherlands.
Still the best sailing couple on the net
Cheers
Well Maya your work like a mad women has certainly paid off. lol Great thing about seeing the primer get laid on is that it brightens the interior and makes you feel like you've come a long way. Which you obviously have, you both have done incredible amount of work on this boat and it shows really well. Its looking good, really good. Aladino did a fabulous job on the Settees whether their under the cushions or not, the darker trim looks incredible. Have a good one.
Keep on trucking your doing fine
MC II is a picture of life itself! Ups and downs along the way. But as long as you are aware of them it's usually solved. Thank U
Love the lamps!
Thanks!
Wow thank you so much Henry!
It’s looking really nice 👌
I would love to hear Maya play "Ashhokan Farewell" on her violin, from Ken Burn's series on the Civil War. A lovely tune !!
Both are incredible...salute
G'day Crew,,
Love the lamps , the smaller of the two looks like a copy of the DAVIES or DAVEY safety lamp , it can be used safely where flammable fumes are a problem , as they wont ignite gas or fumes .
Respect
The Weems & Plath is an anchor lamp easily lasting overnight. Recently I saw one on a Hoovies Garage video when he visited the Ferrari Museum It looked to be nickel plated and was on Enzo's Desk in his office display.
Hi to you both, when storing a half used tin of paint it is a good idea to stow it upside down, that way there is no skin on the top of the paint when it is reopened.cheers Roly 🇬🇧.
I love the work that is going into your boat
Love your work!!
I'd imagine the previous owners must be so pleased they have pasted ownership to this wonderful and talented couple; hopefully so pleased that they buy something necessary to complete and or compliment this masterful refit. . . :>/
Interestingly, I had the same reaction when Maya referred to the bulkhead as a wall and instantly, Aladino referred to us picky viewer to "edit" the proper boat nomenclature into the vid. In my defense, I did spend almost a half century making my living on boats, so thanks Aladino for considering the "peanut gallery".
I've never been around boats but I've been reading. Correct me if I'm wrong but it's not a ceiling above you, but overhead? And what's between the overhead and the cabin sole (not floor!) is a ceiling (not a wall either)!
@@sietuuba I think the correct term is Deck Head. I was just worrying about forgetting the names of bits of boat, however when I was in the navy almost everything was called a tweaker. A 5lb hammer was big tweaker. A floor polisher was called a tweaker. A small hammer was unique in being called a tapometer. Every line on a sailboat was a tweaker. In fact nothing was called by its proper name. Ranks were Louie, Louie Com, Com and Kipper. However, not to their faces.
Another nice episode. Loved the music in the first part!
Love the Weems & Plath lamp too!
A comment....... One of the things that I did when I am painting or staining cabinets, I created a "paint-room" out of plastic with a fan going outside, i.e., negative pressure. This keeps dust from going on my projects. It usually take a half a day to set up. I usually do it in a garage where I am doing the cabinets. Just a suggestion.....
Good choice 410 the walls or bulkheads in the fine vessel if you had done it within wet on wet time cycle would not have to sand in between I find chemical bonding stronger then mechanical bonding being that you are using epoxy primer that makes the most permanent bond
Great show guys once again the boat looks fabulous coming on really fast great skill from Deano an you miya an you both deserve a break an some sun 😍👍
How appropriate. The light at the end of the tunnel.
The second Lantern/Lamp appears to be a Miners Lantern (DAVY LAMP) from the COAL MINES providing light and it changes if there is certain gasses present in the mines it would burn a different colour if memory serves me well.
Schön, daß es wieder zum Säglä geit.
Luv u guys!!! Nice work! It will be a beautiful boat.
Great video, very exciting yo watch the excellent work you are doing😊
Looking good! Having to stop has got to be a huge bummer.
The more I’m watching your boat the more I’m convinced that I would leave open the footwell in the cockpit area all the way up to the stern. Maybe I’d thicken the back stern a bit to house hidden from the weather hydraulic or cable steering gear but I would be moving the cockpit essentially backwards creating room for a loveseat sized doghouse as a kind of lofty mid level miniature pilothouse with a three levels step walkway into the boat.
Just because it offers you great views from the inside of the boat looking around you in when docked in harbors and at any other moorings when it’s raining as well as being covered from the elements during sailing in wet conditions.
This backward moving of the cockpit with a crossed lines wind vane, as in attached to the extended back end of the rudder steering it from behind helps with having no lines in the cockpit.
And then attached to a cable or hydraulic set up I would like to add a small steering wheel that helps you from having to bring all that wet gear stuff .
And when sailing you could sit outside or inside and just make small adjustments and go inside again.
I just love the dog house pilothouse style, but it’s probably to much out there financially and time wise having todo the work even if you did like the idea.
The Weems&Plath lantern is an Anchor Light.
No I don’t think so - a true marine oil anchor lite has fresnel lens and is wind/ rain proof (supposedly😊)and typically have a nail at the bottom of the lamp so the mariner can tie it securely top and bottom to keep from swinging wildly in a stiff breeze.
Well now that you mention it I can imagine you guys in some strange new anchorage on a starry night and the glow of the lantern as wolves howl in the distance 😉
Could I please encourage you to make the top coat on the interior another off-white, perhaps even cream? For me, plain white is cold, but cream is much warmer and softer.
I love watching your channel but often get so involved in watching and anticipating your next episode , you did remind me this time and it also remined me how times i have forgotten to hit the liked button , Please remind us , i know it makes a difference to your rating , Good luck with your reuniting with Magic Carpet 1 , See I'm anticipating already !!
can't wait to see MC 1 !
Dino you work such magic, that I wonder where is the rabbit, and the hat!
I don’t think I could sleep without the decks having some glass but the epoxy will have it sealed great vid 👍🏼
Excellent work
I love watching these videos
i have to say I like the color of the primer better ;-)
Some O glorious sanding builds character!
Aladino, you're such a child !
You may be looking back in 30 years time and reflecting on the renovation of your still owned Magic Carpet Two.
.. Cheers to you. ..
I love all your videos and have seen them all. (Wait, there's no "but".) With all the work you put into MC II, I would want to know what the peeps feel about it that have "sold" this boat to you. And I imagine a video about it. I would assume that has to be one happy celebration.
