Amazing skills for storytelling. The creatures you talk about is very simular to our old norse myths about "Nøkken" (the nixie). You are a living commercial for your country and these films really made me interested in the rich Scottish culture and history. You really made me love Scotland and the nature and scenery is just breathtaking. Keep up the good work - love your movies. Greetings from Denmark
I'm a huge fan of Celtic folklore, so I would love to hear more Scottish stories! Especially told by such an excellent storyteller.
More myths and legends videos please!
I've heard you can identify a Kelpie by their hair because no matter what form they take they can't fully change their mane. Though, different stories I've heard vary on what the giveaway is. Some say that their mane/hair always has a green tint to it; others say that no matter how long they've been out of the water their hair is always damp. I've also heard some versions where it's not really hair, but rather their mane is made of rushes or some other water plant.
My first exposure to the concept of the Selkie came from a Tom Clancy novel of all places. A character who was a hired assassin took on the name of Selkie, due to it's ability to change forms. I really liked the character and molded several roleplaying chars after her in my late teens/early twenties. Of course as I learned more of the actual myths I realised how poor the portrayal of the creature was in my original exposure, but I have kept a love for the myths.
I only ever read the first book.
I remember it being good.
You're a man of many skills Tom, I did'nt realize you were such a great storyteller ! Greetings from France
Waiting for the Fandabi Dozi and Calum's Gaelic version of Mad Max.
Mad Malcolm... in theaters 2024.
I love the diverse content. It makes the experience you give us more emersive. When I was young; and there was no internet, dinosaurs roaming; I had a CD90 audio tape of folk tales. The Fairy Flag of Dunvegan, Arthurs' Treasure and Cap of Rushes. I'd listen to it over and over whilst painting lead elves and orcs, or Judge Dredd figures. Now with many careers behind me, I see the connections between stories, how they adapt in oral traditions, how the tropes and motifs can show anthropological data. It's fascinating to see how we still structure our societies according to our fables and myths. Anyways... I thank you for your Telling, nice delivery... you are multi talented indeed Sir! m out
A great movie about selkie’s is the Irish animation Song of the Sea!
Great video, really enjoyed this one, always been terrified of Selkies, not sure why......
Would love to see more ancient Scottish myths and legends.
Top quality acting as always!
That was fascinating Tom! You're a really great raconteur. I can imagine you in the laird's hall 1,000 years ago keeping all the folk enthralled on a dark knight, everyone a bit dim in the smoke from a huge peat fire. And you, maybe with a wee harp too. Aye, a harp. That works.
Love the old stories, please do more of these?
This acting is gold
I like comment of you❤🙏
Moral of the story? Do not befriend strangers, Do not let them in on your land/home. Family above everything else.
Oh Yeah that's great story telling!
Back in the day after walking the WHW I took home two cheaply issued booklets with Celtic and Scottish fairy tales. I was imedeatly gripped as the stories were dark and black and absolutely terrifying. They must still be around somewhere, I'll have to look them up once more..
Cheers and thanks, abfab dozi!!
for some reason kelpies and selkies are both present in icelandic folklore. kelpie is called by several names, 2 that i remember are Nennir and Nykur (important!) its physically described to look like a normal gray horse except for having backwards hooves and a cows tail always found uncomfortably close to a deep freshwater. kelpie is less aggressive but is instead very cunning in icelandic myths.
Selkie is unchanged, sometimes genuinely in love with a human, sometimes seeking vengence.
That's probably because of Irish and Scottish slaves that viking warriors took to Iceland. There's a bit of Icelandic folklore that's a blend of old Norse and Celtic myths. I'm not surprised to hear that both Kelpies and Selkies are in some stories of Icelandic folklore.
This was fun, Tom. Hope you'll tell more Scottish stories sometime. And thank you for the setting you chose for the second one. It's a near dead ringer for the setting I've been trying to create for a scene in a story I'm writing. It's as close as if I'd asked you to go out and find such a place.
I watched a film recently, with many similarities to your legend; it was called "Ondine"
Was looking in comments for this, beautiful film
Kelpies are damn terrifying!!! So good, Tom, thank you!!!!
My great grandfather was from Mexico City and when he would visit us for Christmas he would tell us stories about witches that would turn into dogs and birds the size of humans.
We would all sit around him eating popcorn and drinking sodas, his stories were scary, sometimes I would have nightmare but I loved every minute of it.
My great grandfather was a great story teller, I'm glad he shared all his stories with us, I started writing them down so that way when I have grandkids I can tell them his scary stories...
Great video and thanks.
I watch a lot of channels and know a lot of yourubers but personally I am very impressed, very funny and especially I love his outfit. support the spirit of youtuber, the spirit of blogger.
Great stories Tom! For those interested in stories like this, and others from Scottish folklore, I highly recommend checking out the YT channel Liath Wolf.
Happy St. Andrews Day
The only shape shifters are the 200 fallen angels, and they're all chained up down in Antarctica. Their children the Giants are due back anytime.
Well, I was greatly entertained by both stories but I found the Kelpie story to be a great cautionary tale to be sure! Well done, Old Son!!!
You are an amazing story teller.
Excellent! Looking forward to more Scottish lore...
Beautiful, wonderful and rich. You would make a fine Seanchaí a chara.
I must show my 8 yo this now as he is absolutely ravenous for ancient myths of our peoples.
Slán ón Éirinn 💚
Shapeshifters, our ancestors warned us,
I feel like both stories would make great movies but that second story especially. Thank you for the awesome video!
Icing on cake. Thanks for sharing. -On behalf of those who can't afford to give, a MASSIVE THANKS!!! to your patrons as well.
You are living my dream. I’m Scottish, but grew up in care and live below the poverty line. I love that you are living your dreams 🏴 ❤
Subscribed yesterday for the survival content. Staying for the stories.
Kelpie in disguise: How do I human? * literally eats the entire bowl *
The humans: 😨😨😨
Kelpie: Nailed it!
It is good to hear mystical tales from another culture and hear all about them, my sincere thanks for these tales in this time and season of celebration my best to you all.
Loved it more please
First one here my Highlander friend
I would like to see you and ( The Highlander ) tourist guide, share a camp fire, cook fire 🔥 in full 18th century clothing. You all discuss or choose the historical topic.
I’ve read the story of Donald before but not the Shieling and Kelpie story. But 100’s of years later and yet, and teenagers are still the same! Don’t piss off any seals and stay away from haunted lochens… lol lovely PSA.
Love me some good stories. This is the season for stories. Thanks, friend.
“Don’t ask me how, but it did”… That gave me a good chuckle 😆. Love the stories!
Would appreciate more of these stories, never gets old. Especially in locations like these 👍👍👍
This reminds me of that old Celtic Monsters TV show. They should do another season with you as host.
I will never be friendly to an old Scottish woman ever again 🤪
It's a double-edged blade. If the old woman is a kelpie in disguise you should turn her away. But if she's one of the fair folk in disguse then you should offer her hospitality.
I have never heard these stories before but heard others about both these creatures. The one I heard of the Selkie was it had to remove it's seal skin to transform into human form. It also needed it's seal skin to return to the sea. A fisherman fell in love with a selkie that visited him often and to stop his new very beautiful girlfriend from leaving he stole her sealskin and hid it. Making her In effect a prisoner on land. After sometime and while he was out fishing she found her seal skin and escaped.
In the stories I learned of Kelpies , they usally take the form of a beautiful horse which entices people to try and ride the horse. The people become stuck to the horse which then heads into the water and drowning it's victim. There are many tales that follow that format.
I'm sure a lot of cruel people needed myths and legends to keep them from being bad folks!
Why are these creatures so gruesome?! Great storytelling though!
My first time hearing about Celtic folklore...and certainly not my last time!!! Tom those stories were awesome, thank you for sharing them with us!!!
More stories, Tom. I love the way you say and act out the stories.
As I’ve said in another comment, the Scots who moved to East Texas and other parts of the South had a big influence on the culture. Ghost stories were very big in my childhood, including one about an ancestor who killed a soldier to protect her milk cow. Supposedly if I go to where she lived he will show up and shout “we’re’ s my milk!” Very scary at age 6…pretty funny now. Love Silkie stories.
Seal wife stories crop up in every culture where seals are an important part of their lives.
Great and fun video!! Very entertaining!! I listen to your stories while sitting in New York traffic! I saw some shapeshifters there 😂
Moral of the story... don't kill baby seals. 😂 (No seriously, do not do that. 😶)
Great stories! Thank you sir.
*I love how those stories teach important principles: Trust your parents, don't let in strangers...*
Don't kill baby seals 😅
Great video. The kelpie story was wonderful!
LOL, splendid stuff.
Cool video thanks
I love your stuff

"You took my daughter, now I'm taking Yours" that's one badass Selkie mother there 😍🔥
And the Kelpie is like the Black Knight:
„It‘s just a flesh wound!“
Epic
How about reenacting The Campbell's and the McDonald's?
The selski...!! Always loved otters...& Seals.. I'm of Scottish decent of crofters from the land clearances in Australia 👍 MacPherson excellent Post 👍 there's also another version of that story we're they had a child together...!!..
Creatures - mythology - is truth that no one else saw! Writing from Canada, Atlantic Canada. 1976 - I met a sasquatch - I was a 250# - 6 ft - hairy big guy. At 1900 hrs - while fishing - 30 yds off shore -I was fishing bass -- I had a quatch yell at me, about 50 yds from me, never saw the beast - but For the last 45 yrs - I know it was - what I say. ---
ps - GOSH iit is beautiful there! Summer place here is a 25 mile lake. deep - granite rock the size of houses and buses. Thank YOU SIR!
What have you heard? Or do you know Anything, of My Clan? Clan Carmichael? Please hit me up.
This was so great! My daughters and I listened to this on a car ride and it was a big hit. More, please! From Georgia, USA.
Amend my last statement. All Scotts are kings, with exceptions of “sir” John de Menteith, Valence Pembroke, Rab Rae and Robert the Bruce. 😖🙏💪
I stumbled upon your channel this evening. Brilliant stuff! Looking forward to exploring some more of your videos.
wish i could find a teller of Irish myths. 🇮🇪🌷🌱
Tom, Tom, Tom! You’re good for the Soul🥰 thanks👍👍😊
Would you consider doing seminars there? Some of the proceeds could go to help land preservation.
I'd love to learn the quater staff, using the staff as a survival tool, hearing more Scottish folklore and try the food!If it's reasonable, I'd go there for a couple weeks!
I absolutely love the Scottish accent and could listen to you tell stories all day. Can't wait to visit your beautiful country someday.
I’m watching this while staying in a remote bothy. Spooky
Shape-shifting, sounds almost as believable as evolution.
Thank you very much. History is mix of imagination and facts.
Great stuff Tom.
Your doing your bit to keep the ancient British spirit alive.
Absolutely first rate👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I was expecting him to say something about established titles. Everyone else is
In contrast to others here, *my* first real exposure to the legend of the Selkie was "The Secret or Roan Inish," in which the tale is part of an Irish family's ancestry, but the truth is left unclear.
Very nice Video!
We have a lot in common, but I definitely lack your talent as an entertainer, congratulations to that. :)
I'm watching
Fandabi Dozi 👍
I absolutely love theses! Thanks for another good story I will listen to a half dozen times.
My first reaction when you described the Kelpie is how much it resembles the jersey devil
Really enjoying your videos! Keep up the good work
I have a question. Can I were my clan tartan on a great kilt if I get one I’m part of the Mackenzie clan of ross and comerty red castle Scotland
Scotland is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Can't wait to come visit again
Now I have zero mythological knowledge so perhaps there is a reason to why their limbs become a hill; but first thing that went to my head was them returning to be a piece of the land that they are from sort of so they're always a part of it..and maybe one day they may return!
Fun stories. Probably terrifying at the time.
Nate
I want a whole channel like this.
Does the Ceriliech, Morrigan come into the mix as Morrigan does change her form when she is in front Cu Chulain.
I love these stories! Do you know any stories of the nuckelavee? I’ve heard what they are, but have never heard any stories featuring it. I imagine any story with this sea demon has to be a true horror story.
What’s the type and name of the green jacket your wearing
2:02 if you take a picture and zoom in you will see you have some little friends amazed to see you
I really wish this video got more attention bc wow i loved this. These stories are so fascinating and such an important part of preserving oral tradition
I was expecting a story about a seal pup boy who turns into a seal when the tide comes in.
My wife and her sisters and brother went to see the kelpie in Falkirk on Sunday
Is there another part to this?? Because I think the 1st part is missing....
