John Candy was just a funny dude. He was one of those people that could just naturally be funny and enjoyed making people laugh. I get a strange sense that he may have been a bit darker inside though. I didn't know the guy, but he gives me that vibe of a man who loved to make people laugh but was a pretty sad and lonely human when he was by himself. Just a vibe...could be wrong.
I watched this in the cinema when it came out. So funny ! John Candy was a unique man indeed. I miss him alot too. How many more movies he could've made..
Cop: "What the hell are you driving?" John Candy: "We had a small fire last night, but we caught it in the nick-of-time." Cop: "Do you have any idea how fast you were going?" John Candy: "No, the speedometer's melted, and as a result, it's hard to say with any degree of accuracy haw fast we were going...but the radio still works!"
I got stopped by a cop late last night. Out of date tags and no taillights. He said I ought to run you in but I'm letting you go because there ain't nothing wrong with your radio.
Yeah, just like the 70's BOMBSHELL Dian Parkinson on the Price is Right, lol! (Did you know Bob Barker actually boned her regularly? Have your game show host spayed or nuetered!)
My aunt Debb grew up with John Candy as her next door neighbor, the Candy's love her family so much that when they moved to another part of Ontario, the Candy's sold their house too and move next door again. Later on in life, Debb was surprised that Johnny the funny fat kid next door actually made something big out of himself.
Yeah basically me the first time watching it :D rolling on the floor and wheezing. Candy had the PERFECT physical comedy talent for such scenes. Also why i loved him so much in "Uncle Buck".
Same here, and I couldn't stop laughing after watching that part for the first time, which also makes it my most favorite funny scene in the whole movie. XD
Oooooh, this is my most, all-time favourite movie; this film always makes me laugh, and breaks my heart when John Candy is sitting all alone in the train station at the end. Also when Neal has that mean rant at dell in the motel room, near the start of the film, and Dell's response is so genuine and pure of heart. I love the part when they wake up in the same bed and Neal has his hand "between two pillows." I purchased the soundtrack to this movie, the songs in this are awesome. I wish so much that John Hughes and John Candy were still alive, the world needs this kind of heartwarming, friendly humour again. There are so many epic, awesome moments in this movie; I watch this a bunch of times every year, especially at Christmas.
I hate that when played on regular TV they delete so much! It's one of the the best scenes! Reminds me of my husband, who when really upset used fuck to describe every word in a sentence! The f'ing car broke down on the f'ing highway in the middle of the f'ing rain leaving me f'ing stuck to walk two f'ing miles to get f'ing help! Loved the Old Fuck, may he RIP 💔
I have been there. Also walked the rental car lot, which really was not a rental car lot last time I was there. I just think about Steve Martin getting mad in that spot.
Absolutely one of my all-time favorite films. Any "road warrior" has experienced every one of the multiple travel disasters portrayed here. It's especially poignant for me because the STL-Lambert International Airport has always been my personal "Bermuda Triangle" of sorts. A transportation black hole I can never seem to escape. So, for Neil's F-Bomb meltdown to happen, in exactly the spot where I, too, SO WANTED and NEEDED to let it rip, was (and remains) the ultimate fulfillment of a long simmering dream of mine.
I have to disagree, Minty. The hallucination scene where they turned into skeletons is anything but creepy. First time I saw that scene I couldn't stop laughing, and John Candy turning into the devil was the cherry on top. Probably my favorite scene in the whole movie. Truly an underrated movie. Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a perfect Thanksgiving experience, imo.
What seals it as slapstick for me is after they come to a stop the camera angle over the hood and through the windshield with john candy holding the steering wheel which is bent to shape of his hands and steve martin's fingers dug into the dashboard and when he pulls them out they make that suction and pop noise. Absolutely fucking hilarious and not a word is spoken.
They don't make classics like this anymore. John Candy I really miss his onscreen presence. Still remember when he passed I was in high school, that was a very sad day.
I saw this when I was a kid on home video. I remember my mom losing her mind when Steve Martin went on his f-bomb tirade. That aside, this movie is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen and the ending still makes me cry. Every. Fucking. Time. RIP John Candy.
LOVE this movie and is my traditional Thanksgiving movie every year. Yeah that ending still gets even to this day and I'm glad they scrapped the original ending.
Seriously I can't even imagine that other ending! The whole idea of the movie is trying to get home to your loved ones and the friends we make along life's crazy roads and opening our hearts to them. "Hello Mr. Griffith" 😭😭😭
@@rosesmith6925 when Neal's wife greets him and Del says "Hello, Mrs. Page".....and then he is looks up and smiles with tears in his eyes....oh man....waterworks! Not to mention one of my close friends that passed away 2 years ago is named Marie so when Del says "Marie's been dead for 8 years"....😢😢
Hands down my favorite Thanksgiving movie. After spending nearly the entire movie laughing, the part at the train station comes out of the blue and lays waste to you. Brilliantly written and brilliantly played by Steve and John.
The truck scene with Candy turning into the devil was NEVER scary but absolutely hilarious. Candy dressed in a child-like devil costume made it all the more funny. From the first time I saw it right up until today one of the best and hilarious scenes in the movie. Right up there with Steve Martin cursing out poor Edie McClurg at the car rental place. Classic movie.
One of my favorite comedies. Steve Martin and John Candy have great chemistry together. Wonderful comedic scenes, heartwarming ending. I need to buy this movie!
To me, it's THE John Hugh's masterpiece! And interesting tidbits you found Minty. As much as I'd love to see the "directors cut", I think it might be like The Blues Brothers. Though interesting to see the extra scenes, it just killed the pace and humor of the movie for me. The maturity of the movie I'd say is just right for 13+. The F bombs are gratuitous, but I'm sure kids hear more on the street on any given day than in one movie. And the scene between the two trucks to me is the funniest scene of ANY comedy movie! Though nightmarish, the editing is done so well there's nothing overpowering in the sequence, unless you step through it frame by frame and pause on it.
Love this film....an underrated comedy classic,...I must have watched it over 100 times, and it never loses its comedic shimmer,..the proof of a great film

This movie showed that Martin and Candy were not only great comedic performers, but also very competent actors. It' a shame that we lost Candy way too early, and that Martin has pretty much lost interest in making movies. People should also look up the number of films that John Hughes was involved in, whether writing, directing, or producing, it's amazing how prolific he was. Yeah, he's got a couple of stinkers in there, but overall a very good track record.
#9 is debatable. I’ve read that they shot the dinner (the flash scenes that Neil thinks about while going home in the train, was the original ending)... and Del was apart of that dinner. Another little interesting fact: The reason Del has a black eye towards the end of the movie is Bc Neil punches him after finding out Del didn’t get insurance for the rental car - which was used under Neil’s credit card.
As an American I appreciate that a comedy centered around a U.S. tradition has universal appeal. My family discovered an Australian comedy called THE CASTLE that is both hilarious and heartwarming. I love this movie. 🤗
Watch this movie every Thanksgiving. Some of it was made in my home town of buffalo NY. So glad you did this movie minty. A few years back me and my family kinda had a planes trains and automobiles situation trying to get to my hubbys family in Wales UK. We never got there either. I kept hearing the music from the movie in my head everytime we had a problem on that trip.
I swear, this movie tells my travel adventures with my uncle, who was every bit as big as John Candy. Everything just seemed to go wrong. Delays, no hot water in the hotel, rental car problems, problems with staff at restaurants. It seemed to never end. I don't miss it at all, but this movie sure brings back those memories.
I saw this the day it came out and still think it's one of the BEST ever Comedies and I always wondered why CANDY and MARTIN did not do another movie together! They worked perfectly together on this one! The F scene still makes me laugh every time! I heard a long time ago about all the extra scenes and always wanted to see those some day!
When in comes to terrifying moments in otherwise family-friendly movies, I'd like to add the Cyborg sister at the end of Superman 3, and the Beta Unit with the gooey face from Last Starfighter. Nightmare fuel, the both of them.
I don't know about any of you, but my heart weeps every time I think of John Candy. I think of all the comedians who left us too soon, his passing is the one that hurt my heart the most. And this movie makes me cry. Always. Minty, please, could you do a video on John Candy's "Only The Lonely"?
Great video Minty. This is a fan favorite of mine and its sad to see how it has very little air time nowadays and how some people have forgotten this Thanksgiving classic. I watch it every year as I do with other holiday films and for being a film about Thanksgiving, Im surprised its not highly remembered here in the states. Anyway great job on the video and cant wait for more holiday videos in the future.
So glad to see another awesome video, thank you for all that you do to brighten up our lives! You are the best!

There's acting, and then there's acting, the train platform and Steve and John going home, that was good. I love this movie. 🤗
Would love to see that 4 hours director's cut ...
I’m so glad that the car rental scene was left in, as it’s my favourite scene in the whole movie and gets me every time.
A friend of mine met and hung out with John Candy. He was very much like the characters he played. A big loveable lug.
Surprised you didn't mention that the Home Alone house was used 3 years before Home Alone was released
Not the same house, but nearly identical!
Not the same house but on the same street, so they could be neighbours
THANK YOU! This is a classic but a gut movie! John candy will forever be remembered as the GOAT!
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Love this movie! "YOU'RE GOING THE WRONG WAY!!!"🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Thanks, Minty! Your reviews never disappoint!
10 things you didn’t know about Blazing Saddles
Lol Could you imagine if that movie was released today?, Lefties would lose their minds even though it's actually making fun of racism in a smart way.
"Oh boys! Look what I got here!"
"Hey where are the white women at?"
What did he say?
The sheriff is near.
Jason webb No I said the sheriff is a ni- (Bell rings)
@@ToothpickMan11 You're stupid.
Nooooo the keleton devil scene was pure comic genius. Even as a kid I laughed my ass off!
Those aren't PILLOWS!!! Another great one, Minty💘💘💘💘💘💘💘
The "large Marge" scene was filmed in Lemoore California on the 198. They had to use fake snow along the edges of the highway for the scene
Cool! How do you know?... Fresno here.
@@psychocircus7002 because I lived in Lemoore at the time. It was the only shot in the Valley that had "snow" on the ground for about a month
80’s was the greatest ever decade for comedies.
Much love to everyone from me in North Wales 🏴
When in comes to terrifying moments in otherwise family-friendly movies, I'd like to add the Cyborg sister at the end of Superman 3, and the Beta Unit with the gooey face from Last Starfighter. Nightmare fuel, the both of them.
Absolutely LOVED this movie growing up!
Still my favorite John Candy movie. Yes, even more than Uncle Bucl or even Spaceballs!
Nothin But Trouble
The Great Outdoors
ONE of my BEST Movies Everrrrr.... !! Thank You !!
"I can take anything; I've been with Del Griffith! ... Here's a good idea: Have a POINT. It makes it so much more interesting for the listener!"
I don't know about any of you, but my heart weeps every time I think of John Candy. I think of all the comedians who left us too soon, his passing is the one that hurt my heart the most. And this movie makes me cry. Always.
Minty, please, could you do a video on John Candy's "Only The Lonely"?
The first time I saw Martin's f-bomb tirade, I was almost on the floor I was laughing so hard.
Not the only Thanksgiving road movie! Dutch with Ed O’Neill!!
"Are you going to help me are just stand there like a slab of meat with mittens" 🤣🤣
one of my favorite movies ever! Nice video minty!
I heard they had a hell of a time finishing the scene where they were spooning. Neither Martin nor Candy could hold in the laughter.
