The Greeks used a single dowel in the center of each drum of a column to keep them in place while being stacked up. The columns are not a single piece of stone, but made up of several sections.
The Greeks were way before Romans. They invented Corinthian, Doric, Ionian type of columns and then Romans made a mixture from these three types called syntheton in Greek.
It's because they were better architects and didnt have to worry about a boss telling them to "cut corners, and cost save". Ingenuity and precision work was welcome. . Now it is just efficiency and speed.
I always thought they drilled the whole column. So they are using the iron more like a glue? :)
I'm not entirely sure how the molten lead held the top piece since the inlet was on the lower piece.
It's always a delight to learn about ancient construction techniques, that might be useful someday.
