I solved the Audrey Hepburn Lipstick Mystery (Which lipstick did she wear?)

Hello lovelies, today I will be diving into the mystery of what lipstick Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's.
"Hand me my purse, will you, darling?" Holly says, interrupting Paul, "A girl can't read that sort of thing without her lipstick."
Breakfast at Tiffany's is a 1961 American romantic comedy film directed by Blake Edwards, written by George Axelrod, and starring Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly, a naive, eccentric café society girl who falls in love with a struggling writer. It was adapted from Truman Capote's 1958 novella of the same name. On October 5, 1961, Paramount Pictures released it in theatres to critical and commercial acclaim.
This scene from Breakfast at Tiffany's will forever conjure up images of a heartbroken Holly Golightly applying her signature shade of salmon pink lipstick in the back of a taxi.
If you're a fan of Audrey Hepburn or simply just a fan of Breakfast at Tiffany's, you're aware that Golightly's lipstick has caused quite a commotion. Bloggers and Reddit threads have gone crazy trying to figure out who made her characteristic salmon pink and what shade it is.
As an inquisitive fan, I searched the internet for lipstick and learned about others that were similar to Golightly's shade. I've deconstructed the discussion and compiled a list of top-recommended hues so you can get her characteristic salmon-pink pout, too.
This is the lipstick that shows up as Golightly's favourite shade when you conduct a fast google search. However, whether Revlon's Pink in the Afternoon is the correct colour is debatable. Let me explain it to you in more detail...
When you look at Pink in the Afternoon, you'll see that it's not nearly as peachy or salmon-coloured as Golightly's. But that isn't even the most pressing worry in this case.
A UK-based cosmetics artist, Lisa Eldridge, purchased Hepburn's gold Cartier lipstick container at a Christie's auction. She found a small remnant of one of Hepburn's last lipsticks in the case when she picked it up. Eldridge swatched the lipstick, produced her own batch, and described it as a "genuine salmon pink," alluding to a scene from Breakfast at Tiffany's that was cut from the film.
Eldridge claims in her video announcing the lipstick holder that the shade does not come from a brand that begins with the letter "R," and she vows to take the shade's name and creator with her to the grave.
I was about to give up on my search at this point, but then the plot deepened.
Revlon shared a shot of Richard Avedon, the photographer behind the majority of Revlon's 1980s lipstick advertising, and Audrey Hepburn on Facebook in 2019, wishing Avedon a happy birthday. When a follower inquired about the allegations surrounding Revlon's Pink in the Afternoon, the Revlon account replied, "the rumours are accurate."
Perhaps Eldridge has a different shade of lipstick in Hepburn's lipstick case?
Other Reddit postings claiming that Pink in the Afternoon was released in the 1980s, decades after Breakfast at Tiffany's, can be found if you follow my internet trail. It's also worth noting that Golightly's lipstick tube was gold, whereas Revlon's lipsticks are packaged in black bullets.
After doing some additional research, I discovered Audrey was a part of the Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick campaign in the 1980s, and she was seen wearing Pink in the Afternoon for an ad. A remark at the bottom of the ad confirms her lip and nail colour.
Whether or not we'll ever know for sure if Holly Golightly wore Pink in the Afternoon, we can still rock the lip colour knowing that Audrey Hepburn did.
Eldridge produced a limited-edition lipstick called "Go Lightly" in her Summer 2019 Lipsticks launch after revealing that she acquired Hepburn's lipstick container. Eldridge still sells a gloss in the same colour, even if the lipstick is no longer available. The item is defined as follows: "a coral tint that is insanely 'salmon pink,' inspired by one of Lisa's old shades. Reminiscent of Hollywood in the early 1960s."
Eldridge said she'd never reveal the original manufacturer or name of Hepburn's lipstick, but she did provide admirers with a fresh colour match to the original that she has.
"Eccentric" by Estee Lauder
Some believe this Estee Lauder shade has more colour than Revlon's "Pink in the Afternoon," but it's still not as salmon as Holly Golightly's original pout.

The Little Black Dress was created by Coco Chanel in the 1920s I believe, in response to the rather ornate clothes women wore before-
watcherin parson video... might be roman pink by max factor.
I saw that same information that Revlon had confirmed that the color was Pink in the Afternoon. It actually pulls peachy on me and on several other people that I have seen review it. Also, I heard that Audrey had several jewelry quality lipstick tubes, some jeweled, that she refilled with lipstick over and over again. So Lisa Eldridge may not have found Pink in the Afternoon at the bottom of the one she bought but it was just the last one that was in that one, not necessarily the one from 1961!
I was hoping it would pull peach on me but it pulls a lot more pink (warm NC20 skin). Nudie salmon and corals are tricky!
I didn't know she refilled her jewelled lipstick tubes! 😀
I love Lisa Eldridge but... how annoying. This is why I hate that rich people can take art and hide it away for ever. There are some things that belong in a museum and Audreys lipstick is one.
Lisa has put the Audrey's lipstick in her makeup museum! 😍
@@desertrose4597 are we able to see the brand and shade name then?
That kind of reminds me of an episode of CS where a rich guy buys a never seen before last painting of an artist just so he can look at it and then he destroys it so nobody else will know what it was.
Just as Hitler did....stealing and hiding away the great masters !
i definitely think the Vintage Doll one is the closest to what was in the film, though i stand by the idea that it was Pink in the Afternoon but through either film translation or reformulation the color looks different than the one today
Erin Parsons (Makuep Artist/ Vintage Makeup collector) did a lot of research about this and the most probable candidate for Audrey's lipstick is a refillable Christian Dior lipstick in 20 or 24, it doesn't exist today. There's a TikTok video about it on Erin's profile.
She bought my Audrey one!
@@Laurajaneatelier that's so cool!
I like Lise Eldridge and I enjoy her channel. But the nonsense about taking the color and creator of it to the grave is not only stupid. But it's ABSOLUTELY absurd. It's lipstick for christ sake. It's not the cure for cancer.🙄 Thank you Laura for another great video. 💖😊❤
I think the colour of a lipstick will look different on every person according to your skin colour.
She did that to protect her investment AND promote her business. Very smart move on her side but extremely frustrating for fellow fans. I think release of that video was the last time I ever watched Lisa 's video lol
Some people when given a bit of power show their true colors 😄🙈🙉🙊💋💔
... wouldnt it be more important to share the cure for cancer
@@kukachoo42 Well... its obvious some people WOULDN'T SHARE the cure for cancer. That's the all point of the comment. If you are in possession of something smaller or don't share your lunch sandwich with the poor starving kid, unless you profit out of it.
I’m mixed on how I feel about LE. When you pay as much money for something as she did I understand it. But to play the I know but I’m not telling you….rubs the wrong way.
Revlon had the gold Futurama type tubes back then? I’ve always thought it was blasé apricot.
original Persian Melon was more coralish, salmony. It became blasé apricot and Persian melon became more hot pink. But those salmon/coral/peachy shades of that era were amazing.
I loved blasé apricot
That definitely looks like an old Estee Lauder lipstick that lady is holding up!
it's Estee Lauder Pink Apricot
Agree 1000% It is definitely an Estee Lauder coral color!
Yes it was called frosted apricot 😊
You have to remember that formulations change as time goes by because they find out that some ingredients are toxic.
Also would like to add that the modern / updated version Revlon Pink in Afternoon, (as in the Ad) would be different to the 60s colour, it looks to have more pink less of the salmon, more 80s …less 60s.
I never really understood why Lisa Eldridge chose to keep the brand and the shade of the lipstick secret either, each to their own and all, but I felt it was a little petty. And I agree with other comments here, I now suspect the reason she didn't reveal the brand is so she could push her own lipstick brand. I love that "Breakfast at Tiffany's" immortalised the little black dress as a staple piece of clothing 💄❤
I don't know if Lisa has the one from the film - it may have very well been just a shade Audrey really liked - but whatever she has must still be sold in stores, otherwise she would have let us know her findings. You could research all the salmon pink shades every manufacturer makes and see if you can find the years they were created. You might be able to narrow it down to a handful of options.
I would love to see more of these types of videos. Dupes for screen-worn shades would be awesome!
All the lipsticks are a lovely shade of pink. Loved this video.
When I was a teenager I used Yardley Frosted Pink! I’m 68 now so that was a long time ago. Can you still find Yardley lipstick?
Yardley lipstick omg! Sadly I think they don't sell it anymore. My mom still has a old tube lol, love those 60s frost lipsticks! Wish I could find something similar!
MAC’s Angel is similar to the Yardley frosted pink!
Great video, Laura! I really like Audrey, and when I was little my mother owned a lipstick by Yardley whose shade resembled Audrey's lipsticks very much. Your videos always bring back great memories Laura, and very special ones too! Hope you had a merry Christmas!
I just watched Audrey’s 1962 Paris When it Sizzles movie. In it, she wears a salmon pink lipstick and blusher. She looks delightful!
It's said that pink in the afternoon was created after the film.
Yes please do more videos such as this one! Would be cool to test out which colors Monroe’s makeup artist combined to create her signature red.
There’s a lipstick of hers that was auctioned a few years ago (gatekeeper-free lol) , it’s a Revlon shade called “Bachelor’s Carnation”. Revlon should definitely re-release it! Besame recreated the packaging for their Marilyn collection and *I think* it could possibly be what they based “Carnation Red” on since the collection was based on her personal items
@@oliolsson2916 it was. Most of the collection were recreations of products that were found in marilyn's makeup bag that she brought with her to film sets, and revlons "bachelors carnation" was one of the many things in the bag😊😃
Great research years ago in the 60’s Avon had a great pink lipstick 💄, called Sugar Pink have never found anything close...cheers from Pennsylvania 👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🎄🎄🎄
It actually could be Pink in the afternoon, but when she used it in the movie it had another name. Also, it could pull corally on the screen wither because of technicolor or recolor of the movie for new media. Also, is so annoying that Lisa is hiding the shade from all of us!
Pour les francophones, le rouge à lèvres que porte Audrey Hepburn dans Breakfast at Tiffany's est donc "Pink in the Afternoon" de Revlon. Il est disponible sur Zalando
When I first saw Lisa’s video I was a bit angry because yes she spent 25,000 GBP on it, but she dissected it to replicate it and I knew it was a Revlon. Sorry but, I think she fibbed.
It was closer to 47,000 GBP actually. 25,000 is where she nearly stopped bidding.
I think the vintage doll looks the most like the movie, and looks great on you. I agree that the other pink tone ones don't look super 1960s almost a bit more 80s looking to me ?
Audrey hepburn lipstick.. always the mystery we want to solve! thanks for the video
That’s greedy of Eldridge. Who knows what she owns. We can’t even be sure at all that what she obtained is the lipstick is the same one as Audrey used in the movie. Maybe Audrey just loved those pinks because those looked good on her.
Wouldn’t it be funny Audrey herself had forgotten what she wore? Sixty years ago she was just filming a movie and being herself.
Why is it such a secret? 🤷♀️
Since Wally Westmore was the makeup artist on the movie, it would have been a Westmore lipstick shade.
You are positively correct! My mom told me this and I have compared it dozens of times
Very nice video! I have both Pink in the afternoon and Lisa Eldridge version. I love the Revlon one for daily wear, I think it matches my skin really well. The LE one is supposed to be based on the one she has from Audrey, which doesn’t mean it was used in the movie, it is more salmon, beautiful packaging and really interesting color. I understand she doesn’t want to share the real lipstick, it took her a lot of work to analyse and find out a similar recipe, so sharing it would be like sharing Coca Colas recipe…
the vintage doll one is my favorite of them, the others feel so 80's.
I think the Revlon lipstick is the best dupe for the original. I have done Audrey Hepburn makeup for myself and I think it was the closest shade I used.
These types of shades wash me out, but excellent point about the technicolor effect
You always present such nice content. Have a wonderful new year
Thank you for the fun video! On my screen there was a difference in the first two samples, with the Revlon being a bit darker but less color saturated than the Estee, but both look very 1980's to me. Your lipstick looked the most accurate and best one worn. Revlon makes a salmon color called Siren, but it still doesn't look like the 1960s.
Interesting take on an iconic beauty color- Hepburn's Holly Golightly 💋 💄 lipcolor or dupe, close enough 🤔. Good research Laura! Who knows the reason why this LE will take a lipstick color(the very recipe) for that color the late Ms. Hepburn wore in the film, to her grave- that's very bizarre. Anyway, they're all pretty colors and will try out soon enough! Anyway, a good movie 🎬!! (Natalie 🌸 )
Theres a glamourdaze video where a blonde model is painting her lips with a lipstick exactly to the audrey hepburn one🤔
Curious about Jungle Red and thank you for your video!
Lisa is holding out for "drama" I'm sure...
Request: Estelle Getty before was celebrity
I have your shop’s Audrey lipstick and it looks amazing, feels great and lasts all day. Perfect for any occasion and eye makeup
Hi, could you tell me the finish of that lipstick? Is it a cream, satin or matte? I have quite chapped lips and don't want to enhance that with a matte formula. Thanks.
The vintage doll lipstick has the best colour.
We will never know.
How true to color was cinematography at the time of the movie?
I think it was a Max Factor shade. They were sold with gold tubes. I bought a lipstick my cousin used to wear in the 60s. It was called Peppermint Pink. It is a very light shade of salmon. I think that they maybe would have had a slightly darker shade back then.
Laura, would you consider making a video on Tippi Hedren? Especially her in Marnie and The Birds! She’s so gorgeous!
I love the vintage doll one! Pretty yellow undertone x
My blessing that I can find your video ❤️
The Vintage Doll shade I would say is the nearest to the one in the film so congratulations Laura Xxxx
Beautiful color
It's a Revlon lipstick if anyone is interested what was Aubrey's lipstick was
This is so interesting!
Red Apple Lipstick has a shade called Audrey and they also have one called Let’s Flamingle that looks like the shade in the movie.
The vintage doll lipstick is the nicest colour x
Joli rouge à lèvre rose
Lisa is looking for a way to profit off of Audrey Hepburn. I would never purchase her products because of it.
That too is so cute and is so good with your skin!
I'm going to buy that Revlon shade.
Ask Lisa Aldridge she has it
Do you know what compact she’s using in the movie?
Nice video
I propose we boycott Lisa Eldridge and patronize Vintage Doll Cosmetics instead. Seriously though. LE is selfish and deserves to be cancelled for that kind of behavior. Especially since it's a historically important film. Laura so glad your brand makes such beautiful lipstick colors. I will be ordering ASAP.
I don’t think Lisa is selfish, or has kept it to herself for selfish reasons. She really has shown that she has integrity in everything she does. I think it’s more that she’s being discreet, being respectful to Audrey and her memory. Perhaps there is a little bit of keeping the special-ness of something that she paid a huge amount of money for too, which is understandable. In these modern times of over-sharing everything, discretion is a rare attribute, one which I respect hugely and consider Lisa used in this instance for only good and wholesome reasons.
Hi, Laura,
You look gorgeous in all three shades and your videos are so well researched and presented! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!
I would love to find the 1990s max factor pure poppy.
I was about to order all of your lipsticks but the international shipping is too much to handle 😭😭
Its estée lauder in eccentric
I am very suspicious of Lisa's story. She spent lots of money on the lipstick case so wouldn't it be perfectly convinient to have a little bit of lipstick on the bottom. And oh yeah wouldn't it be even more convenient to be a salmon shade like in that iconic car scene.
You should try Max Factor brand
I found the exact shade in Pupa lipstick
Ah sì? E quale?
Love how we all want to wear the lipstick of a movie about a painted wh0r3😂
pink in the afternoon? by revlon :)
Vintage doll wins , closet in color
@Laura Jane Atelier I live in Finland Europe. Can I buy yours lipstick 🤔 ? I wish Lisa Eldridge will tell us what is it.
yes I ship internationally
Algorithm bump ✨️❤️🤛
I like the Vintage Doll color.
The Vintage Doll shade is the closest
She's lying duh
I wish you would do beauty products that Lana Turner used, she is THE most beautiful movie star. Jane Russell is my second favorite.
There was a Max Factor shade back then called Pink Bamboo that is also very similar
I dont think its that one though because the tube has stars on it and the tube in the movie is smooth. It looks like it has something engraved on the top and a white label on the bottom. My bet is Estee Lauder. Unless Lisa is lying and its actually Revlon.
Maybe it was Pink Brandy because I wear it all the time and its actually a light peachy colour?
Yours is absolutely the best match. That said, I think it may be Pink in the Afternoon but looks more coral in the movie because of the Technicolor.
I'm a big fan of LE, but think it's awful that she as someone who considers herself a makeup historian of sorts is withholding academic information to make money off people. Shameful of her.
Yes, I was just thinking the technicolour probably gave her lips a slightly different colour than they had irl.
Exactly
Pink in the Afternoon was launched in 1983,so there's that
Hepburn was a massive fan of Estée Lauder products, writing in a letter, “I start and end my day with you.” One of the baby pinks Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s was rumoured to be a Lauder shade- either the now-discontinued Mocha Pink, or the lipstick in colour 260, Eccentric.
I personally think Lisa doesn’t want to give out the brand name is simply because she wants to sell her version of it which is sad, but the vintage doll Audrey shade is the best on you! loved it😍
Yes- but it would be nice if she would let fans know just for historical purposes- i think it is rotten to keep it secret- I would never buy any lipstick from her just because of keeping that secret!
@@shannonm.4087 I feel the same way. It feels like a betrayal 😭
@@shannonm.4087 Yes exactly its super greedy!
I agree, I never saw her the same way ever again after that. Seems really selfish.
SHADY MARKETING TACTIC
Anyone else really disappointed with Lisa Eldridge? I, for sure won’t be purchasing anything by her over this.
Ive always found her annoying and snobby
I have bought her lipsticks but I must say I am very disabointtted that she don,t want to share what is was 😔.I think it is something we still can buy 🤔 ?
Yes I am disappointed in Lisa as well, and it has discouraged me from purchasing from her.
I think she wants to remake that color to sell it, thats why she doesn't want to tell us.
Agreed! Caramel Kiss by Cover Girl is a good one to try.
I think...NO HATE that it was kind of a jerk move on LE's part to keep the color to herself. And I believe the other comment about only wanting to sell "her" brand of lipstick 💄 💋.
I agree- it annoyed me at the time I watched her video and it still annoys me! She could have just said nothing!
@The Makeup Detective thank you! You should spam it on Lisa’s channel so true Audrey fans would know
@ppp i heard its Christian Dior lipstick 20 or 24 in recharge refill line.
My question is, why do we assume that the lipstick in that tube was the same shade she wore in 1961? I'm sure she wore more than one shade, these could be two completely different shades of lipstick. I'd love to know both.
I don't know if the actual lipstic brand Holly Golightly holds in her hand can be identified, but the film was shot in Eastman Color and the physical film did fade and change in color over the years. What we see these days is a restoration based on the original negatives. It is very good, but I think the film medium in itself and the restauration process can show us a slighly different shade than what Audrey wore during the shooting of the film. Film shown on the screen is once or twice removed from real life. Lisa should really make a new batch of her Go Lightly lip stick! Funny how little mysteries like this catch our attention :- )
I hope too that she make it next spring. It was always sold out.
I'm pretty sure it will be coming out this spring once again. Be prepared to snap it up if you want it.
Thank you Laura for the time you take for all the interesting vintage items. My Mom’s first cousin who is the late Patricia Neal, American Actress, who played along with Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I wish I could have gotten that information if she knew what shade Audrey wore from the movie set. So unfortunate that we are being denied the information. Great work though! Hugs 🤗 from Florida ❤️
Yardley, Max Factor, Coty and Cover Girl are all possibilities for that gold silvery tube. Audrey's makeup artist also worked with Liz Taylor, Ava Gardner etc and they are all pictured with a pink salmon shade for a movie or another...all from the 50's and 60's.
My guess is that most likely it was a Max Factor lipstick.
@@effiebug4278 me too
@@effiebug4278 me three 😂
Max factor recommend a specific lipstick for Technicolor. 7-22 and Roman Pink. Marilyn Monroe had multiple 7-22 in her personal collection when she died as she was filming 2 months prior. It’s very likely MF Roman Pink was worn by most Hollywood stars at some point. I managed to buy one. It’s a lovely coral pink.. just like this. I have my suspicions that AH lipstick could be MF Roman Pink
I have the lipstick from Revlon = Pink in the afternoon
I have issues with Lisa withholding the name, and it's not just about profit. She buys a ton of vintage cosmetics, and doesn't want anyone else to find it for her personal reasons.
I feel like that is so selfish
She wants to make profit out of it
I have to wonder if Micky Rooney's over the top yellowface performance in "Breakfast At Tiffany's" adds to its cultural and and historical significance. It wasn't in the book.
And I think we're at the point where we can openly say that she was a call girl rather cafe society girl.
I’m sorry but I hated his character in the movie. If I owned the right to the movie, I’d release an edited version that cuts all the scenes with him out bc the movie doesn’t change without him, only maybe leave on the last scene when she gets arrested, but yeah it’s pretty gross ngl
the way things look in real life is often very different to how they appear on film. the bright red ruby slippers in The Wizard of Oz are dark burgundy in real life for instance. It could well have been that Audrey's lipstick was pink irl, but the lighting and film made it look salmon.
Such a (imo) douchey move by Lisa Eldridge...gatekeeping Audrey's lipstick so that you can sell your own version and not give credit to the original brand. 🙄
I like all those, I would never buy Lisa’s though. Another shade that I would suggest is Nars Niagara, it looks similar too. Obviously it wasn’t a Nars lipstick, since Nars wasn’t around back then, but it’s a nice pinkish salmon as well.
Nars Niagara is fabulous. I have run out. I’m gonna have to repurchase
Yep, it is :)
Yep I love that shade and I bought it purposely for that reason; to have my own signature shade like Audrey did lol.
My gut is telling me Max Factor
Old Hollywood reds would be awesome! I know that Audrey wore Revlon's Fire and Ice in another one of her movies - I guess Revlon was big back then!
The vintage doll shade is by far the very best!!
Agree!!
Pink in the Afternoon wasn’t available in the 60’s.
Good colours, Vintage doll is closest. I recall as a child, on the dressing tables of elders, it was the gold tube vintage Yardley lipsticks in that Salmon pink colour. Also Max Factor, Coty… are others I recall.
*It's the Estee Lauder.*
"So why does it look different then? Eh, smart ass?" Because BAT's was shot in Eastman Kodak color, notorious for degrading over time. "Pink In the Afternoon" was duped from the original tube. "HOW DO YOU KNOW???" *An old NDA prevents me from answering that.*
I don't know who Lisa Eldridge is and that really doesn't matter either. If they're using an original 50 year old tube of lipstick from the 60's the color would've changed by now as well.
The bottom line is: If you like the pink color, wear the pink color. If you like the coral color, wear the coral color. They're both pretty. 😘
I love your videos. Revlon did have gold tubes in 1960s. Below is a link to the color swatches from Revlon.
Which Link? 😳
We have to take into account that maybe pink in the afternoon or whatever color it actually is in BAT probably pulls more coral on Hepburn because of her undertone. The same color can pull different ways depending on who has the color on their lips. Lip pigmentation also affects things too. Also lip liner - if those were used back in the day - could also modify the way a color looks.
