The way magic works in this show is that the mage basically makes their imagination reality. The guy was untouchable because everyone could see at a glance how insanely tough his cloak's defenses were. Anyone with any sense couldn't imagine themselves getting through all that. They convinced themselves they couldn't do it and so they couldn't. Ubel is not right in the head. She could see how tough it was but, in her head, she's able to completely disregard common sense and just go off instinct. Her instinct says "That's cloth. I can cut cloth." That was all she needed to accidentally kill the man. "Cloth is meant to be cut therefore I can cut it." The same happened with the Sense clone and her hair. "You're all thinking too hard. Hair is meant to be cut."
Yeah, basically if the material something looks to be made of is something that's meant to be cut in common knowledge, she can cut it. In simplified terms, the attack basically ignores enchantment levels and looks at the base material. This also means that a plain old guard in perfectly mundane plate armor could give her a lot of trouble, because plate armor is notorious for being all but immune to cuts and slashes. It's an interesting spell/ability - she can cut things that normally most would consider uncuttable, but struggle against things most mages wouldn't even consider an obstacle. 18:49 Magic’s about imagination. Ubel used “cloth is meant to be cut” to override “clearly he’s wearing layers of defensive magic” (which, yeah, most mages couldn’t, so it is absurd to begin with). Same with hair, even if it’s being used with magic. However, it makes “basic defensive magic” the ideal defense against it, since its _only purpose_ is defense. It’s very much a “never tell me the odds” type of bit. 22:43 And Frieren’s ‘blast’ is probably something akin to what Flamme showed her, that left a crater where a hill and three demons were. 26:36 The three facing Denken were Kanne, Lawinne, and Laufen. Wirbel and his crew were supposed to take down Denken, and seemed to have a tough go of it with two of them running out of mana again (or at least being left unable to walk).
Yeah, basically. Ordinary Defensive Magic is one of the few things that Ubel can't imagine cutting with her personal magic, not even if she sees it get shattered by other kinds of magic, or slashed apart by a warrior, because she can't imagine cutting it with her personal magic herself, because can't visualize it.
Frieren's height of magic moment is absolutely the most baller move I have ever seen in a show about magic. No hands to cast signs. No staff. No spells used. No mana used. Essentially meaning that Frieren just realitywarped and did a significant spell effect without even following any of the rules about magic except for the visualization rule(probably). We don't know the limit of this feat, whether she can only use it once in a blue moon or if it can't produce every spell effect, but if the limits are loose and she is personally choosing to not use it often. She is just technically cheating, she is making magical effects from NOTHING. NO RESOURCES USED. Thats godlike.
ALSO I just realized that because she isnt using a spell in any way. Doesnt that also mean that technically she can do anything that she visualizes even if she doesnt have a spell for it. Her only limit is her belief of if she can do it and whether she can visualize it.
If Frieren is this ridiculously strong by herself, then it really speaks to how much of a monster the rest of the Hero Party were as well in their prime, and how much of a menace the Demon Lord must’ve been. Like seriously…..a black hole?! Black flames from the literal depths of Hell? Reality warping that could’ve created a whole ass new galaxy or universe?! And to top it off…..Jedi Force (or maybe Shinra Tensei, kinda?). The animation staff really outdid themselves here! This was probably one of the best animated anime episodes I’ve seen in recent years! ❤🔥🙌
@@user-sh9ww1yk1y She probably learned that after Qual's fight along with the zoltrack study but she was probably this strong against the demon king, she was also most probably by far the strongest of the hero's party (just speculation, i don't see them fighting this freiren).
@@user-sh9ww1yk1y Not really. She was using a wider repertoire of magic, only not flying. It was only after killing the Demon Lord that she started spamming Zoltraak and defensive magic. She had all those spells way before, it's just that there's no need to use them now since there's peace now and Zoltraak is way more useful and quick.
*When being in a predicament* Normal mage: well I guess that's it for me. Denken: I might be out of mana, but I'm not out of options. Frieren: Nah I'd win. My staff is only a tool, hell I dont even need these hands either.
Wirbel's team was sent to counter Denken's clone. They didn't show the fight, but they showed them square up from a long distance shot. We already know what kinds of magic all 4 of them are capable of, so the author probably figured that the audience could visualize how a fight might play out with Wirbel's restraining magic and a 3 vs. 1 advantage, and probably figured it would be more worthwhile to spend the time showing some of the other matchups instead. Still, it would have been nice to see it. The Fern vs. Methode fight almost seems intentionally hidden though, like they might be saving a focus on Methode for later in the story or something.
First of all R.I.P. Akira Toriyama, the true legend of battle shounen manga / anime (yes i am posting this in a lot od videos but the man deserved LOL). Second, that's why Ubel is my GOAT. I remember thinking if they would show us her fight against Sense's clone in here, bc in the manga they didn't, and i know why: it wasn't even a fight, it was a completely annihilation. And her backstory too, really cool.
Since the earliest point in the story when they said magic is about visualisation I've wanted to point out how broken the unhinged characters are in this world.
That reality breaking scene 100% reminded me of the Gogeta Vs Broly fight, like damn Frieren chill. Denken's most powerful attack, the strongest of the test takers, looks weaker then what Frieren casually tosses out there. Like damn girl relax
All you had to do was make the guy take a couple of steps back. There are a number of ways to do that. Shake the earth underneath him. Blow a hole underneath him. Hypnotize him. Use an illusion to make him dizzy or scare him.
Frieren's clone casually revealing she has a "fuck you, I win" move XD that and I love that they chose to draw the super spells mostly in infrared and ultraviolet cuz they're literally inconceivable in power XD
13:34 So I was rewatching Frieren earlier today and saw that Qual's (The Demon King General's) Zoltraak/Soul Track was actually black. So yeah, cloneFrieren used the original version of the attack, while mages normally use a white version of that attack. Possibly white to show that it was the changes made to the spell, as said in episode 8, or simply to symbolize the human's version of the attack.

Hi. I'm kinda new here, and found you guys really funny LOL you really seemed to enjoy the show. Those animations are top tier. It's kinda weird to know we only have 2 eps left. I just got confused in the Ubel part: why does the guy in the middle don't like her? I understand some people in the beginning (when she appeared) not liking her thinking she was gonna be a villain, but by now i think it's pretty clear she's just crazy LOL
Y'all missed the point, she used magic in her slicing attacks, but the difference with Ubël is she understands logically that the defensive magic can't be cut but visually she sees a cloak and she sees hair. To Ubël, she knows from her sister being a seamstress that cloth and hair can be cut, so when she sees cloth or hair, she can visually cut it because she sees cloth or hair. Other mages would think about the magic imbued in it, Ubël thinks about what is right before her eyes.
More beautiful, spectacular magic animation! I knew this episode was going to be more amazing than the last. I'm glad that you understood Frieren's thought process about underestimating Fern. I'm also glad that you understood the "cutting" principle of Ubel's magic. She treated Replica Sense's layers of defensive magic hair like Burg's defensive magic coat. She has been criticized for utilizing empathy & imagination in spell casting over logical analysis/learning mechanics. That's another reason the chemistry between spell observer analyst Land & crazy intuitive Ubel is so much fun. I'm going to miss Lawine & even Richter. I hope Kanne can manage without her. A special thank you to Taylor calling out people who think Frieren is boring! There's a couple of reactors who think the exam arc is "slow," & the other examinees/side characters (except Denken) are uninteresting after only watching 2 episodes of it! They assume that they aren't going to care about these characters in 5 episodes 🤬. I'm looking forward to the next episode, but we only got 2 more left 😢.
So, what I’m hoping now is that go trought this whole journey after the journey and never actualy see the demon king fight, but then we get a proper 90min movie showing the Heroes party taking on the Demon King.
Basically, Ubel's understanding overpowers *your* understanding so even if you buff up on defense items, if those items are made of something that you can instinctively believe can be cut by a scissor, doesn't matter if you're Frieren level, your items will be cut I think it carries over to her copy abilities too but I can't recall or figure out how beyond her being hella autistic cuz that scissor flashback brings a LOT of stimming energy
I like to think that it wasn't the Spiegel that revived the clones but Land's clone. I mean he's so secretive about himself so if his technique can also make clones of somebody else than him, then there's that
@@qyn69 yeah, but it's just kind of odd to me why Ubel's clone specifically casted Sorganeil on Land instead of Ubel and Denken. Because I mean, Denken could probably handle those 5 by himself. Similar to how Kurapika in Hunter x Hunter is able to conjure his chains because he can perfectly visualize them, Übel is able to cut any cloth or hair because her mental image is that strong. Given the mental training Kurapika had to do to visualize his chains, cutting cloth and hair must be something ingrained into Übel’s very being to be able to imagine cutting it to clearly no matter what.

Terence keep saying Frieren got some real explaining to do when she already explained. "This basic attack magic is more than enough for mages of today." Basically......SHE ALONE is the exception. lol
@@Reanimatedyt you right, my bad. It was Terence, my bad. I thought it was more than just him. This is what happens when I try to watch while I'm supposed to be working 🤣🤣
So what i understand is that because of her fucked mental state, Ubels magic ignores magic enchantments/magic defense completely. So cloth is still cloth, and stone is still stone.
So here is a question: If magic is all about visualization, why does Frieren need to wander around and collect spells? Couldn´t she just imagine whatever she wants? ... Also i would imagine that Frieren held down the demon king with that jedi move while Himmel cut him to pieces.
That’s true, I think the spells are existing already imagined ones. But yes in theory she could probably just imagine and develop a spell to do whatever it is she’s trying to do.
@@marodonthemorone in that case i wonder what the next steps are. The whole Zoltrac plot made it seem like magic in this world is some kind of science, but the only moment reflecting that is when Frieren apparently analyses the barrier. I guess this would one of my few criticisms of this show. The magic system is left to vague for the audience to follow or understand the effort that goes into becoming a mage. Which is why i have a hard time relating to the whole first class mage thing.
@@Tyarrk Frieren magic is mostly scientific / logical by nature, spells require an understanding of magical theory to work. Imagination is limited in that it only affects the form of the spell, which makes sense because if you want to summon a sphere of water, imagining what size, shape, or form it takes is far more convenient than requiring theory to do all this. "visualization/imagination" is simply a factor that goes into how effectively a mage is able to use a spell. A person who cannot visualize summoning a fireball, is unable to. Essentially, visualization is a step required to cast spells. It also likely has correlation with how strong the spell is upon using it. A mage who can only weakly visualize summoning a fireball won't be able to summon a strong one, even if they had a godly mana pool. However, just because someone can visualize breaking the barrier, doesn't mean that it will. Visualization is like a step required to bring out 100% of a spell's power. No matter how powerful your imagination is, though, it won't go above 100%. The reason Ubel seems broken, is because her spell is a unique case where visualization does have a significant effect on the spell, effectively enough to bring out "above 100%" of the power, as one might say, because the spell has different potential based on the wielder. It's very nature is to cut things based on the caster's visualization. Which might seem overpowered, but again, keep in mind that it only has a small range, which cannot be overcome simply through visualization, and even Ubel, one of the most talented magicians in the series, with a rare and unique ability to cast magic instinctively through her perceptions, rather than logic, which is why she's able to cut through cloak and hair with ease, because she sees them as such, despite knowing there's defensive magic in them - is still not able to cut through basic defensive barriers.
@@jachinnelson5786yeah I think fern will win, the only reason why ubel can kill burg and sense is because its a one sided matchup. She said she can't defeat wirbel or denken but can kill sense. because unlike wirbel and denken who uses barrier to defend, sense and burg imbued their barriers to their cloak and hair respectively. it's much easier to visualize cutting a tough cloak and hair than a brick wall. Fern mastered basic spell such as barrier and zoltraak that she can spam it in a single second.
@@jachinnelson5786Funnily enough, sorganeil works best if the enemy is far from you. To counter that, you need to be as close to Ubel as possible, which puts you directly in Ubel's melee spec.
Without clear advantage, Fern can't beat Ubel post exam as Sorganeil would simply do its job. Mana concealment only works with ambushes and stuff alike, which is easily considerable as major advantage. In a clear 1 v 1 Fern has no chances. Before Fern fans go insane over this though, I urge you to understand that Fern is NOT a fighting mage, while Ubel is all about fighting. Please try to understand the implications of this. Also keep in mind we don't know all of Ubel's skills for now, and she's has a cold and battle oriented thought process. She'd be superior to Fern in almost all aspects in a battle.
3rd class beating 1st class...haha that shows that classes are just used for political, high society/nobles and kinda like passport to other high class cities... imagine who are these high class magic council, they might be weak as fuck...there are more stronger mages out there without ranking them through classes... MADHOUSE...hoping they renew this for 2nd season cause the next arc...is gonna be fire!! Denken and Methode's time to shine!! Meanwhile Land: still sippin coffee... ...😂😂
It's not a matter of who is stronger. Like Methode said, it's more akin to rock-paper-scissors. A mage will most likely lose if encountering their hard counter, even the powerful ones. So you can't simply think if A can beat B, B can beat C then A can beat C, as C's type of magic might be ably to nullify A's. That being said, A can still be considered first class when C isn't, because A can emerge victorious in more scenarios than C.
what is blud waffling. Ubel was only able to beat Burg and Sense because she's special and because she's the perfect counter for the both of them. Sense could literally body everyone else in the exam aside from frieren. these classes are NOT only for show, only 45 people in the whole world are first class mages. I don't even know what you're talking about with regards to nobility, it's not like you can buy your first class certificate or anything, you need to pass the exam to get it and you can see by these tests that the exams are pretty demanding. All the first class mages are pretty capable in one way or another. Ubel also was only disqualified because she killed the examineer and that was against the rules. you seriously don't know what you're talking about.
@Reanimatedyt Exhibit B & C are on the last 2 Frieren reactions. You haven't even given a proper defense. Go call Terence for help!🤣 Sadly, this is the only show I'm watching on the channel right now, so it's the only comment section where the case can be presented.
@18:50 nah.....she used magic, that was all magic. that's why she went on that whole spiel about how cloth and hair can be cut. That's why the mention of Kanne damn near being a blood bender is important......cause it's gonna happen in the future. she will be able to visualize the veins in the body
@@friedhotwings oh ye of little faith. Didn't Sense say, "First-Class Mages make the impossible possible." ??? Deadass....if she finds a mortician and watches them cut open the body, she would be able to visualize where all the major veins are located. There is so much setup during this arc it's crazy. Some of which is just now paying off in the manga currently.
@@AggieCEO 1. Kanne isn’t a first class mage. Far from it, I doubt she ever will be. 2. I’m caught up in the manga, Kanne isn’t in any of the future arcs. Making the impossible possible was referring to conquering a dungeon that’s never been conquered. Not literally doing something that is impossible (manipulating another person’s blood ). It wasn’t written in as foreshadowing. It was written in to tell the audience that it’s not possible for a mage that controls water to blood bend another person, and never will be. There are limits to the imagination. If it was possible, I’m sure Lugner, someone who specializes in blood manipulation magic, would have accomplished it.
@@friedhotwings ehhhhhhh......ok .. ... ....**MANGA SPOILERS BELOW** . 1. Kanne Isn't as of now....sure, but she very well WILL be in the future. It's not hard to see just how powerful she currently is when it comes to water. Frieren even said she couldn't visualize how to beat her in the rain. There is NO WAY that she never becomes one. And since Frieren alludes to seeing them again later, you best BELIEVE it's gonna have and likely after 3 years have passed and she has achieved it. Lugner is a demon, and we already know they lack imagination, he pigeonholed himself in not only his "we are better, period" mentality so much that he thought both Frieren and Fern were weaker than him and couldn't imagine a world where he would lose to them. Of Course he couldn't blood bend with that mindset. 2. There is NOOOOO WAY That "First class mages make the impossible possible was ONLY in reference to the dungeon. That's FAR too small of an issue to use a phrase that ostentatious. I believe that is is meant to be taken literal. The reason for that is because there is LITERALLY TIME TRAVEL VIA MAGIC. Something that SHOULD be "Impossible" but it is clearly not. And if that happened that one time, it's entirely possible that it could happen again later.(I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen during the demon king fight. And just as EQUALLY big if not bigger is being able to talk to the dead. IF Flamme legit created that spell, that is BEYOND impossible as well which makes sense because she is well beyond a first class mage of the current era. and lastly, to say there are "limits to the imagination" is wild. Because there are no limits to what ones mind can imagine when unbound. Ubel is an example of that and I have a feeling that she is about to use Land's clone spell in some nasty unexpected ways in this current arc. And if you read all of this, you are awesome....lol
@@AggieCEO you’re equating the unfathomable goddess magic with the magic of regular people. The magic of the goddess is a completely different magic system than the magic of mages which you should know if you read the manga. Your point about Kanne returning as a blood bending first class mage is just wishful thinking. Kanne isn’t powerful at all. It’s implied that any mage who can control water is OP in the rain, for obvious reasons. The fact that she beat Richter had little to do with her prowess or potential, and everything to do with the fact that she is a mage that controls water in the rain. Based off the second class mage exam that Übel failed, it’s clear that Kanne wouldn’t have even been able to pass that test unless it was raining. The only conceivable power up she could have beyond basic stats improving is learning to create water out of nothing, even with this she would have to have the necessary mana to do something meaningful with it, which means she’d have to undergo way more than 3 years of training. She’s simply not prodigal enough or exceptional enough to leap from third class mage to first class mage in 3 years. Or 30 years for that matter. The rest of your argument is more head canon. I’m relying on what the story has shown us either through context clues or explicit writing. Your point about Lugner is also suffering from misunderstanding the writing. Lugner couldn’t visualize himself losing to (only) Fern (not Frieren, because he’s already lost to her in the past) because Fern is concealing her mana and true prowess. Not because he lacks imagination. Arrogance and imagination are not the same thing. Nor have we seen anything to suggest that demons lack any prowess in imagination with their own magic system. Flamme didn’t create a spell to talk to the dead. If she did, she would’ve just left the spell in her Grimoire. Flamme found a place where soul’s rest. There’s nothing unfathomable or impossible about this, nor is it due to a spell cast by any human. It’s simply a phenomenon within the world of Frieren. Just like Dragons and Dwarves. It’s just a part of lore. It’s possible that it was a spell cast by the goddess but inferring about that is pointless. Don’t forget that this story is about Frieren making it to Ende. They’re already well into the northern continent. Even if it takes another 3 years for them to make it there, I highly doubt first class mage Kanne (doesn’t even sound right), would just teleport to Frieren and group or have a side quest displaying her magical blood bending powers. Don’t forget that there are only ~50 first class mages in the last 50 years. Kanne can’t even fathom concealing all of her mana. She’s not becoming a first class mage in her lifetime. If she does, she’s not going to be a blood bender. I didn’t say that Sense’s make the impossible possible speech was only in reference to the dungeon, I said that it was in reference to the dungeon which it was. Extrapolating that comment to mean anything is possible in the world of humanity’s magic is simply false. Yes, there are limits to imagination. Blood bending is one of them. Even Übel, who supersedes the context of human imagination, can’t use Reelseiden to cut through defensive magic. No one can. And other mages wouldn’t even be able to use it to cut through the first class mages cloak or sense’s hair. Did you miss that whole conversation between Sense and Übel? “The world of magic isn’t that simple.” I doubt you’ll respond to this, but i do hope you learned something about Frieren.

I loved how they used the "real" color of a Black Hole
( based on that pic from Nasa)
Also the accretion disk around like in interstellar
@@tinius9276 eldorado arc will tell you the difference between the way demon and human perceive magic...it's quite interesting...

It is very likely a curse, like those of the demons.

I actually thought last episode was going to be the climax so this episode was an insane surprise
Methode fight almost seems intentionally hidden though, like they might be saving a focus on Methode for later in the story or something.
fern / methode gets a single panel in the manga
Methode shows up later.
Methode shows up later in the manga.

Let’s fucking hope Madhouse decides to do the Season 2. They just have to.

Hey! Welcome! And idk, some characters just have that “I don’t like them” factor I guess 😂
Now I want to see the Hero's Party vs The Demon Lord fight.
We did not miss the point... 19:16.
"Ah Yes, My _______ spell that I haven't used since the Heian Era." - Clone Frieren, probably
This show does NOT miss bro
Yeah idk how people can’t be entertained by this…and we are going to be so upset once this series ends lol.

Funny enough in Frieren's opinion, the one who can také out Frieren and Fern together, or Serie... is Stark.
Basically, Ubel's understanding overpowers *your* understanding
so even if you buff up on defense items, if those items are made of something that you can instinctively believe can be cut by a scissor, doesn't matter if you're Frieren level, your items will be cut
I think it carries over to her copy abilities too but I can't recall or figure out how beyond her being hella autistic cuz that scissor flashback brings a LOT of stimming energy
Only two more episodes, honestly this series has been amazing!!!

But yes in theory she could probably just imagine and develop a spell to do whatever it is she’s trying to do.
visualization is just the first step, if you can't visualize something - you won't be able to use the spell
UBEL got those cleave from sukuna

How strong himmel is
Ubel vs Fern , who wins ?
Fern. Ubel needs to get within 5 meters to cut, and the defensive spell works well against cutting
Imma say ubel

No she won’t. The point of that conversation was that visualizing all of the veins in the body and how to control them is literally impossible.
@@friedhotwings ehhhhhhh......ok
..
...
....**MANGA SPOILERS BELOW**
.
