I played the role of "Darren" at the beginning. When Carl talked to me about the film before I auditioned he was really passionate about the story and the characters. I just came across your channel and another and I'm humbled to see people still loving this film
It's on Criterion now. Talk about Awesome. Great review.
    Derrick.

It is one of the best of the 90s. Very character driven and the plot plays out organically.

I first learned of this movie in one of Rogert Ebert's movie review books that I purchased at half price book store..
One false move takes you on a emotional rollercoaster primarily because of the opening scene..
After that scene I was hooked..
Michael Beach is one of the most terrifying villains that I can remember in recent films .. I enjoyed it very much. 👍👍👍

My grandmother's house in Cotton Plant, Arkansas was used as the sheriff's home in the movie. Back in 1992 I was horrified by the opening murder scene. My grandmother would have been horrified by the language in the movie. It's a great movie. And my grandmother's old house got a back deck out of the deal.

Picked up the criterion release a month or so ago and was pleasantly surprised.
No idea why, but I had never heard of the movie prior to the announcement. When I seen the beautiful new cover and went on to read the synopsis, I knew this was going to be right up my alley, and couldn't have been more spot on. Loved it beginning to end.
Although the supplements are a bit on the light side it had a great written essay and between both the commentary and a sit down conversation with both Carl Franklin and Billy Bob Thornton, Great insight on a 90's hidden gem.

Rewatched it last night after many years, thinking it might be better than I remember it being when it was released... after it finished and I remembered what I really liked about it: great characters, great dialog, a brilliant sense of time and location and a truly truly terrifying villain in Pluto (seriously, he should be in every 'top ten villains in cinema' list), but after watching it I realised the reasons why I don't like it as a whole. Spoilers below.
...The ending. The film is an absolutely brilliant exercise in build up. From the start to about five minutes before the end it's the classic Western trope: the bad guys coming to town and the small town sheriff preparing for it. Okay, so it could go the cliche'd way and end up with a big fight where the hero wins or it can deftly subvert that: the problem is that the film does something in between. The ending seems so rushed and dour, like Thornton had painted himself into a corner. There's no resolution, but no interesting ambiguity either. I can't help but compare it to the great Lone Star, a fantastic neo-noir Western drama that does have a fantastic downbeat ending that subverts expectations. Anyway, my two cents' worth.

A few forgotten classics I'd recommend are, After Hours, The Best of Youth, Babe Pig in the City.
I'd include Dark City, but I know you've brought it up before :)

@@LearningaboutMovies It's a six hour Italian film that centers in the lives of two brothers and their family spanning from the 1960's to the early 2000's. It's a long movie but there's never a moment where I thought it dragged.
It received a lot of praise and positive reviews from many audiences and critics including Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper. Sadly it's been overlooked and forgotten since.

Brilliant film, wonderfully done and well acted. For the faint of heart, I'd suggest skipping the early scene of the LA crime. Many of us are now more accustomed to the choreographed and stylized violence popularized since The Matrix, or over-the-top horror movies, and not the raw brutality presented once they enter the house. I saw this film during its original release and was enthralled, and still have my DVD version. I haven't lived there in two decades, and shoutout to my wonderful New Orleans arthouse theatres - great memories.

Great film. The action scenes and main characters are treated with care. First act spends alot of time setting the scene, and it really takes off from there where you see how the events impact the characters, and their true selves show by the end of it.
One interesting point to note is Bill's character desire to goto LA to essentially make it into the "big leagues" of policing, and Cyndy is coming back from LA after trying to make it in hollywood. Their worlds collide in act 3 where all the cards are essentially shown - where both cyndy and bill's character seem alot more flat at first glance (based on location, race stereotypes), and much deeper/complex as well as flawed by the end. Pluto is also used as a device to 1) make outright remarks calling out the stereotypes 2) reverse dynamic between him/ray 3) lastly his god-like intellectualism/omniscience.
This movie uses the gang/robbery main plot for its' true objective which is a character study on Bill and Cyndy's character, and commentary about identity/stereotypes.
