Because it is mentally and physically draining to fight against your opponent for position (especially against Devon, his stamina is off the chart, and John was 57 years old). At one point you give up and hope the referee will do his job. A good example, Matt Mask vs Evgeny Prudnik during East vs West 3. Clearly Prudnik had the advantage in the set-up, and Matt Mask, as the wild horse he is, was screaming, shouting what his opponent was doing. At one point it worked, because both referees (up and down) were watching Prudnik during the set-up. Unfortunately, you could see Matt dripping in sweat because it took so much out of him just to have a fair start. He lost too much energy and at the end lost the match.

Ninety seconds of rest between rounds is interesting. I wonder what the reasoning is for 90 seconds specifically? The reason I ask is because of ATP recovery times vary among strength athletes. The shortest ATP recovery times I have ever seen is 60 seconds but 2 minutes seems to be average for a highly trained strength athlete. Without measuring it's simply a guess but I would bet Devon's ATP recovery times are lower than average.

I was in a 215lb right match back in 88 that was reffed by Bruce Way ( the crazy huge guy that drank the motor oil in Over The Top) Bruce was telling everyone that pulling John was like trying to move the hydraulics of a D9 Cat..........Bruce also told us that the movie techs filled his oil can 2/3 of the way with honey and by the time he picked up the oil can the oil had risen to the surface so he actually drank the oil in the movie, and needed to go to emergency about 30 minutes after the take. Crazy.....

And then watching Americans totally cheat Devon out of win again and again, until Devon finally had enough and started to fight back. @@jason300c1 the clip after that was edited, when I was listening to it live and making clips, it was okay to me, there are different audio levels however with my setup I can listen to it all on one volume. After reading comments I edited the next video, and next few clips with John I’ll try to adjust it again

I'm sorry but I remember a time when Devon was bright eyed and shiny and believed in the good in the world, coming down to America to fight the legends and was just happy to get a chance to, and he realizing he could hang with the best. And then watching Americans totally cheat Devon out of win again and again, until Devon finally had enough and started to fight back. And i remember even John didn't care when it was an American doing what he could to get his better grip up, or at least ensure the other person didn't get the advantage, and now we come full circle. Where Devon has over the years given into what was the American way of pulling, meaning fight for what you get at the grip up, and there are 'no victims' attitude towards a Canadian who initially just wanted a 'fair start' and was not given that, and no one cared. To where that Canadian finally had enough and did the same things the Americans were doing otherwise he would never had had a fair match himself. And now John is complaining about the refs not giving him the advantage. What a world... John, I'm sorry, but crying about being the victim to a Canadian is the saddest thing ever... especially ironic that you choose to do it on the Travis Bagent show....
This is why very few Legendary Pullers have Devon in their Top 10 all time..... Brzenk was completely out of shape from a 5 yr lay off & Devon needs to have a set up advantage or he just cant compete & then Round One begins & Brzenk blows right thru Devon to the point it looks like Devon's arm is hooked to a Tractor & he is forced to crawl under the table in the Queen's move.... Devon is entertaining but not much else
