I found this band way back, they are the most amazing thing.... I never understood how they didn't get more popular in the US.... even my muso friends are clueless
yea, they didn't. its a damn shame too. honestly, they're no where as good as this cover they did, they perfected this song! but their songs are either great or not good at all. there's no middle ground. also, it's hard to get their albums here. import prices are insane and their records (vinyl) are usually crap with a ton of dirt/scratches and surface noise. get the CDs! i hope they get bigger!
Damn she has a gorgeous, powerful voice. So much emotion and honesty and hint of fragility. I got into them after hearing Australiab Prog giants Karnivool cover "Hey now"
Excellent reaction and analysis Beth. I am 66 years old, and a rock fan - The Who, Led Zep and Pink Floyd in that order, but a lifelong friend sent me a link to them (he was at a few Who concerts with me when we were younger). I was hooked by Hannah's voice, but also the 'minimalistic' but amazingly talented playing of the other 2 band members. The 3 of them together produce incredible music. That's from a rock fan 👍
Same, I've been a huge fan for ages and I've made sorta of my mission to share their music when I meet new people (if I think they're worthy of listening to her majestic voice hehe)
She has a smoky soothing singing voice... Seeing them Sunday night at Glastonbury was possibly the worst choice I ever made! I was too blissed/chilled out to go out and enjoy the last bits of the festival! Their performance was exquisite by the way, instrumentation on point every moment of the performance.
I HAVE AN ALBUM COMING OUT! I'm so excited to share it with you. Available for preorder now! Pre-saves on Spotify really help me out as it tells the algorithm to send to more people :) Preorder Fable here: www.bethroars.com/shop Pre-save my first single Power Of The Wolf on Spotify distrokid.com/hyperfollow/bethroars/power-of-the-wolf
Will there be physical copies of your album available? I'm old-school (maybe just flat out old) and I still like something I can hold in my hands as I read the inserts and look at any pictures or artwork. I enjoy the act of setting up a record and even loading a CD. I even like just being able to proudly display things on a shelf in my library.
I have been listening to London Grammar since 2013. Saw a few of their live performances as well when I was living in UK. Very impressive vocal range 😊
I find London Grammar incredibly tense. There’s so much perfection - at least perceived perfection - that you can feel the tension even listening to it at home. Everything has to be flawless, because flawlessness is the whole point in a way, and I can totally see how that might contribute to stage fright in a huge way: miss a note and it will be so noticeable. It’s hard to describe, but that kind of makes it demanding to listen to as well - sort of feels like sitting in the audience of a very quiet stage play, feeling a coughing fit coming on: you’re scared to mess it up for others. This is amplified by the fact that Hannah looks like a Nineties supermodel. That’s clearly nobody’s fault, but it just complements the music a lot: it really seems to conform to an ideal, even though it’s obviously coincidence. And let’s not kid ourselves: of course it’s all about her. The songwriting and the arrangements are great, but it’s all geared towards showcasing her voice. Easy to see how people might build her up into some kind of supreme being, at least subconsciously. Again, as a sidenote: that would make anyone feel uncomfortable, I bet she has quite a few encounters where people react to her like she’s the fifth bloody element. So when London Grammar rolls into town, it’s like the Louvre putting the Mona Lisa on tour: a certain reverence seems to be called for, even when that’s not really the band’s intention. That’s why I like the orchestral version of “Lord it’s a Feeling” so much: there’s a full orchestra, and they threw a swear word in: sort of out of place, but it does break that tension a little.
Ms Reid is certainly up there in the pantheon of contralto (Etta James, Billie Holiday, Joan Armatrading, Cher etc.,) and demonstrates wonderful voice control...Great singer
I'll bet it's harder to sing that song gently but under full control than it is to belt it out. If you want to hear another utterly gorgeous cover of Wicked Game, check out the one by Heather Nova. Ironically, I discovered her in the first place because somebody put me onto London Grammar, I listened to their version of Wicked Game, and Heather's came up in the recommendeds. Heather is a beautiful singer and an outstanding songwriter. For an early example of her original stuff, when she was being 'rocky' check out our "Sugar" in a live festival performance. For an example of her later, more stripped-back and folky style, try "I Miss My Sky", again, live.
That was a really interesting take on the song. I love how the guitar and keyboard blended and, of course, the vocal was beautiful. Given how low she started, compared to her speaking voice, I was expecting her to do the octave jump in the first verse and was a little disappointed when she didn't. But holding it off until the second verse made it so much more dramatic. I wish I had seen this and could have stolen that idea before I filmed my cover lol.
Congratulations on your album, I’m sure it will be successful. Would love to hear your thoughts on the band Live and the song overcome(live at the paradiso) think you would love Ed’s voice 🏴
I just sang "Wicked Game" in the shower. LOL. Because of severe GERD, I have lost a lot of my upper Soprano range. I'm 56 and have many medical issues. Losing my voice last year has been so terrible. However, tonight, in the shower, I realized that I still have some vocal chops left. Hooray!
London Grammar released a new album 2 years ago. Very recently they put out a live in studio performance on VEVO of the best tracks, titled "America" love to see you do a first reaction please
I dont think its posible to go wrong with a song like Wicked Game and favorite versions are of course always personal. I like this one, because of the little changes apart from the original. It really says: this is my way to sing it. I searched in your playlist and was surprised Dave Matthews wasn't there, though, again, musical taste is very personal. However I will give you a chorus of which I hope it will get your attention: Gravedigger, when you dig my grave, can you make it shallow, so that I can feel the rain.
One of my favourite covers. Another one to listen to is by Violet Orlandi. The song is a popular choice for The Voice, worldwide. Recommended: Chris Isaak - Wicked Game | Maëlle | The Voice France 2018 | Auditions Finales: ruclips.net/video/fQyG6Ctsks4/видео.html She was 16 at the time. Bl**dy hell!
Watching this video has made me think that I would really like to have seen Annie Lennox or Shirley Manson or Debbie Harry do a version of "Wicked Game"...
@@JohnLnyc It's Debbie Harry's performances in Blondie, particularly "Rapture", and Shirley Manson's performances in Garbage, particularly "Only Happy When It Rains", that convince me that they have what it takes to pull off the nuanced performance that "Wicked Game" demands but leave us not forget a great singer who shared a duet with Chris Isaak...LeAnn Rimes!
Can you please react to Storm Live performance on the WISH bus by Raynn and Ez Mil? They are Filipino siblings that absolutely had a memorable performance.
cover in general....the original probable evaluated the cover version and chose the original and that....not the cover....became iconic.......i do, however love good performance
You version is still the best 👌 My 5yr old son have listen to it as a lulaby when going to sleep every single night since it came out (he picks it by him self in the list of over 17h of favorite songs..) we both love it 😊 Cheers from Northern Sweden.
Hi Beth. Hannah has a very unique voice. She changed from the original song but I like it. If I might add kinda in a whisper, maybe because I have listened to your version so many times I like yours better. Because you are from the UK. I have a secret to share will you. There is this young Lady of the age of 19 that hails from northern UK that is becoming a new sensation here in the states as well as UK and around the world. She has 4 albums completed and working on a fifth. She will have the lead role in a new musical starting next fall
At the Londons West End called Rosie. Her cover of “Hallelujah” was used as the theme song of a movie starring Dennis Quad “On a wing and a Prayer”. Please take some time to give her a listen. #lucythomasmusic.
hannah's voice is so angelique, she's makes your mind float in space,.. it's so pure!!!

Hauntingly chilling, yet holds the listener captive

Hannah is soooo fantastic, and she must really love that atmospheric reverb

The girls voice is great. You can feel the anxiety that she has. Damn I'm a fan.

@2:38 The face you make when you realize that God didn't give you Hannah Reid's voice
man, I used to love London Grammar. 5 years ago I believe I used to hear them a lot!
Congratulations on your album, I’m sure it will be successful. Would love to hear your thoughts on the band Live and the song overcome(live at the paradiso) think you would love Ed’s voice 🏴
love this cover.. thanks Beth!
This cover is so beautiful!!
Hannah is both visually and vocally stunning
I am glad that you decided to leave the video as it is

Beth, I love your shirt!
I don't have a strong grasp of how big London Grammar actually is, but they should probably be bigger.
Took a perfect song and made it better.

Hi Beth, loving your reactions!
Have you checked out Ren & Chinchilla, How to be Me live yet? Incredible duet, but I will warn you, you may cry! 😁
Watching this video has made me think that I would really like to have seen Annie Lennox or Shirley Manson or Debbie Harry do a version of "Wicked Game"...
Never thought of Annie till you mentioned it but….
I think Shirley and Debbie would be a departure and require very different arrangements.

10 Points from Germany. 12 Points for the best Wicked Game cover still goes to BR from Scotland 😍
Make a React for "Motorhead - I don't believe the world" PLEASE ; )
Hannah's voice reminds me so much of Sade
Haha.:)
Sade is not even close.
May I recommend Jacob Banks too?
I would like yo know what you think about Marcus & Martinus cover of Wicked Game. They won Swedish Masked Singer singing that song
I love London grammar
Have you reacted to Eva Cassidy - "Over The Rainbow"?
Yeah I mean, that's alright... I guess
It's missing the full body chills I got from the Beth version

Yes, she have a british voice 😅
Enjoyed your reaction to London Grammar. Would you do a reaction to Billie Eilish's song " What was I made for"?
PLEASE > Hallelujah
Song by Jeff Buckley
I like your version better 🤏🎉☮️!
Love reaction! Can you react to the song "Baño de mar a medianoche" by the recently deceased Chilean singer Cecilia la incomparable? Thank You
My vote is still Chris
A great cover is
Kaleo - Bang Bang
Do Bang Bang from Nancy Sinatra, also live....
React to Adam gontier striped accoustic cover of this song he does as good of not better than jack black
I'm not sure what's particularly Celtic sounding about the singing.
Awesome voice. But nothing can beat Chris Isaak's performance
I was hoping you’d get around to London Grammar.
How does that voice come out of hannah.....
Nah no way in hell it's better than the original.
It sounds too forced to me. Not sure what it is about it
No. Not better.
You sang it better...
this is fuckin terrible. no connection to the original, no emotion, no vulnerability at all.
I did not think it was that good.Sorry but Allie Sherlock does it wat better
