chase me and really all the songs in the nightmare series are heavily under-rated since they alienate both sides of their potential fan base. rock purists don't like the fast tempo poppy elements and pop fans don't like the heavy rock instrumentation. to be honest it didn't exactly grab me on first listen but as with many dreamcatcher songs for me, I find nuances with every listen that move it up the ladder. nevertheless chase me holds a special place in the hearts of many insomnias since it was dreamcatcher's debut, or re-debut however you view it - a second chance for the 5 original minx members to catch their dreams as singers. there is a visual plot for the nightmare series, but that's just for added entertainment. a lot of fans like digging for easter eggs in each mv to formulate a theories. but it's perfectly fine if you just concentrate on the musical and lyrical side. most casual fans view the nightmare series as a tongue and cheek horror story the mvs portray. on the lyrical side, the nightmare doesn't refer to bad dreams but rather the nightmare situation the members were experiencing in their short careers. for a lot of factors, many of them didn't know if any performance would be the last performance they would ever give. many of their songs are reflections of their history. in chase me, they describe breaking out of the industrial kpop mold and cause others to eventually chase them. having failed being the 'good kid' and playing by stereotypical expectations, they were going to take a 'bite out of the apple' to make some noise. rock isn't popular in their native country so to release music with heavy rock influence was considered suicide. they stuck with it and slowly built up an international fan base so large that even the korean entertainment industry had to take notice in recent years. one of the positive consequences is that they have to an extent fulfilled one of their original goals, to make rock music more popular in korea. in the past couple of years, new groups have followed in their footsteps not to mention popular groups incorporating rock into some of their songs.
I can say that Chase Me is one of the most epic debuts on kpop history! And you’re about to witness one of my favorite song of theirs, which is Good Night ( 2nd on the nightmare series) I’m loving your reactions☺️ After watching all of their mvs i hope you’ll have to know their names and personalities too because it’s the complete opposite of their concept 😁 And Fun Fact: Dreamcatcher’s debut date is January 13, 2017 and guess what? It’s Friday the 13th. Who can be spookier than them? Haha😆
Still one of my favourite Dreamcatcher songs, though I could say that for a lot of them 😅 The visual story of the MVs of the Nightmare series tells a fantastical horror story, and it's not like the lyrics can't be applied to those themes, but I sometimes feel some people miss the more universal and societal messages in the lyrics. Like how Chase Me describes them as beings that haunt the place and that man's dreams, but also describes their debut and their resolve to make a splash ("the quiet world is going to get a lot of noise") and in a broader sense tells people to be themselves and not let others try to fit you into a mold ("why do you try to fit me into that frame?"), which is exactly what they did when they boldly brought rock and metal influences into K-pop (not that they were the first to ever do rock in South Korea, but at that time it was definitely not mainstream, and especially not for girl groups). Also, despite them "haunting" the place, they're not actually ghosts, but they are trapped in a nightmare dimension, and can interact with the regular world only a way similar to how ghosts or poltergeists might be able to. At least when you look at the greater story of the Nightmare series; from the Chase Me MV alone they would just seem like ghosts. How they got trapped will be "explained" (it's all still a bit vague and requires interpretation of course 😉) in Fly High, the third song of the Nightmare series. Having said all that, I also believe there is a layer of meaning about mental health (depression, anxiety, etc) to the fantastical horror story, which to me becomes quite clear once you start to look for it.
