Also, I stumble on a lot of things I didn't know even exist when at conventions (i.e. new holy grails for me) and then make the impulse decision because "I never know when I am going to see it again".
Yes and everything I was selling was either brand new and in like new condition. But yeah everything you just said is some of my favorite things about cons

Thanks I really appreciate it! I definitely wanted to keep it real and show that things don't always go like you want but you can still turn a negative into a positive

I would say this was a success because... you're putting yourself out there to experience the vending side of a hobby rather than just being a consumer. You're teaching yourself new valuable life skills which may lead to you running your own store at some point down the line. I think most of us are use to the hunt and buy side of things. So to be in the place of 'hunt and resell' (esp. in a busy time constricted environment on top of that!) would be an eye opener and a great learning experience.
Despite the lack of sales for the inventory brought and work put into this behind the scenes, the video itself is a real showcase that not every vendor does well at every convention. This one definitely looked like a different clientele than expected. You’ll definitely sell significantly more at SEGE though! Excellent video as always, and loved the financial breakdown of it!
Sorry to hear the vending experience was a bust, but I AM seeing some fun cosplayers visit your table. I'm also seeing some slick editing to the music; nicely done.
That’s why you are a good dude Matt! You show the ups and downs! Everyone who has owned a business knows what that’s like! Rad as video though as always! 💪🤟🙌
Probably selling too close to ebay, maybe even next time have a large sign saying offers welcomed. That type of interaction can help with sealing the deal.
I feel like those cons are more geared towards pops and little pop culture items. Books don't really sell also lucky bags are a big driver of sales. glad you showed us how it all went good luck next time man
It shows that people were more interested in the anime stuff then in the marvel/DC stuff. Because the anime stuff is definitely a lot more popular than what you had in your convention booth.
Oh man Matt! I'm so sorry to hear that. It's always hard to know what to bring as a vendor that the crowd is going to enjoy. Like you said, you had no idea what to expect and you brought what you thought you should. I'm happy that you were able to pull some positivity out of it in the end and to know what to do for next time. I can't wait to hear about your experience in Greenville at SEGE.
I know you really did work hard at getting ready for this convention the important thing is that you did had fun and I really do believe that you will have a success for the next convention and I know you have to learn a very hard lesson about that.
Thanks for being honest and showing the complications of being a vendor. Not every show will be a win, but it is great that you are sharing what you learn the hard way. In many ways, videos like this are more valuable to people thinking of being vendors, than one that is candy-coated.
Loved the honest video. I’ve been vending for a few years now and have had amazingly successful shows and dumpster fires. I’ve learned these lessons that may help you: 1. Price in increments of $5. That way people don’t perceive you are nickel and diming them. Even if your prices are cheaper than ebay, pricing at $17, $22, etc make people think you are pricing too specifically for some reason 2. In addition to your main items like games, anime, toys, etc sell something you can easily restock from online distributors that people will impulse buy like stickers, enamel pins, bucket hats, plushies, etc. I always aim to make the cost of the booth and travel back from those sales and it almost always happens 3. It’s better to vend at a con with competition that’s based around your items and genre than vend at one with where you are the only vendor of your items but no one there is interested in your stuff. Example, if you’re selling video games, I’d avoid comic cons and instead go to anime or gaming expos (obviously) because those people came to buy those things Anyways, I always appreciate your positivity in difficult times. There’s always lessons to be learned!
You did an amazing job editing this video. Music was good, pacing was good, it really told the tale. I hate the con wasn’t a big profit for you though. Others are echoing similar sentiments that people just aren’t buying at these events lately. Kinda crazy. A few years ago people were telling me they’d go to Retropalooza and come back with very little inventory left.
Thanks I appreciate the kind words! The 1st con we vended at a few months ago at an anime con we did VERY well. The issue in this case is I just brought the wrong inventory unfortunately
This is very informative for all sellers, for some time now there has been a calling out on how sales for these comic book movies/tv have started going down & business folks have all but laughed at that notion. But I see it too, comic book stores have really shifted to carry more than comic books, they carry more manga & manga related merch. I wonder if you had taken anime related video games would that also have helped.
Definitely would have helped had I brought Anime and Manga for sure. I think people are starting to lose interest in some aspects of comics and graphic novels and that whole world
@@RetroWolf_YT Also in your video you did note that you saw a more younger crowd attend, that alone said alot. When ever I go to the book store I see this huge wall of manga and kids always hanging around it. While at my local comic shop its mostly older people.
I don’t think you can ever go wrong with bringing a variety of inventory, as most people have a variety of interests. You could end up being the one vendor who has items that no one else has and it could work to your advantage 🤷🏻♂️
@@RetroWolf_YT that’s awesome. I live in upstate NY and always wanted to sell at a convention but the show’s closest to me would require me to stay over night adding to the overall experiences

Interesting video. It looks like a lot of work, time and effort goes into being a vendor at one of these conventions. I would have liked to have seen you get more sales but there’s always the next one. Cheers
Just went to Tampa Toy Con to get more NES games to fill my North America collection and wish they took your plan. Most video game sellers there were well past eBay, and then were like I'll take $5 off!
Crowds looked low. Did they promote it? I live an hour away and heard nothing of it. Are you going to the Southern Fried Gaming Expo in Atlanta in a few weeks? You would love it.
So the event actually had a good turnout. There was a consistent flow of foot traffic until the last hour to 2 hours. They definitely promoted it alot. Sadly I will miss Southern Fried this year but maybe next year!
I still feel responsible for recommending it to you but if it's any better, I wasn't a success either 😭😭😭. It was awesome seeing you again man, if you need any more cons to know about, feel free to hit me up
You should have some bulk deal prices. 10% off if people buy 3 things, 20% off if people buy 8 things. That way you promote people to get stuff from you they normally wouldn't get. Even if that means selling some stuff at a small loss, you are comboing it with selling less popular stuff that you wouldn't be able to get rid of online, thus balancing out your profits. If I'm honest and visited your table at a convention, I wouldn't get anything like comics or large figures, because I would have to carry them around the entire day. I also didn't see anything that's in high demand. You should talk to other more corporate vendors from large online retailers and ask how they pick and choose their inventory and presentation.
Too bad you couldn't sell that much at this convention, buddy. Better luck next time! You definitely put in a lot of effort to get ready for this whole event, though. I appreciate your dedication.
I use to be real big with going to my local conventions. I decided to stop going to them. My reason is because of cost for tickets to get in for myself/family and parking. Plus, a lot of the stuff at these booths are modern items!! I just rather save my money and wait for those outstanding deals you can find elsewhere. (Flea markets, yard sales, Thrift Stores, and etc.)
Check to see if the convention can provide you demographics on their audience that they market to who also attend their show. If it's a well ran show they should be able to provide you with some detailed information prior.
I did check ahead of time and sadly the guy running the convention was not very helpful and didn't answer my questions fully. Then after the fact told me Anime does very well lol
@@RetroWolf_YT that's a bummer dude. But at least you learned a little from the experience. Good luck at the next convention. I look forward to watching the video
Bro that sucks I really do feel bad that you didn't get as much sold at this convention but I really do hope that the next game convention you really do do better when it comes to selling and having a great selection.
When you are going to cons it's 50 50 you never know what your gonna make iv been going to cons for over 10 years I would always do the research of the con and see what people are buying. Cons are a toss up but the more product the better it could be the size of the con too how many people were expected to come how big are there cons do they attract what you have to offer I hope some of this helps
My experience with cons is the pop culture comic conventions aren't worth your time unless you have cheap prices. I stick to video game conventions. I met you last year at Sege and will be there again this year selling. Hope to see you again.
Oh I didn't realize you were going to be a vendor that's awesome man you're going to do very very well, my experience it's so freaking crowded man, get you some display cases that shut they don't necessarily have to lock but it just keeps people with sticky hands out of there. Also I'm not sure if you're just selling your personal stuff or you're trying to start an actual business but most of my sales transaction now comes from card transactions. If you're doing cash be willing to spit out some deals, you'll do good. It's overwhelming at Sege if you're new to vending but the payout is worth it. I rented a U-Haul, two night hotel, gas, food , ton of new shelving and storage boxes and have been nonstop busy the past month getting ready for SEGE. It's worth it
Unfortunately I haven't had time to track down glass cases so that part is a little concerning. Thankfully we can take card transactions with Square Up. Thanks for the info!!
Thank you again for documenting your process and experience. I do think you are being a little bit too hard on yourself about the inventory you decided to bring. I thought the booth (from video) looked great with a nice variety. I noticed that the majority of "customers" in the time lapse videos walking down the aisles weren't wearing backpacks or carrying shopping bags from spending anywhere else in the room. It just appeared to be a broke crowd - it would have been different two years ago when Uncle Sam was handing out folks attending (and anyone with a pulse) a $1,000 a week. Keep fishing where the big fish are in this changing economy.
So what I saw was most of the people there were very clearly anime fans. I have absolutely no doubt if I had brought anime and manga inventory I would have made a lot more money. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate ya!
If you have Instagram or Twitter feel free to shoot me a DM on one of those platforms. Instagram is Retro_Wolf_88. Twitter is just RetroWolf88 I might be slow to respond but I will for sure respond
no doubt to be a little disappointed but as you said you are going to chalk it up as a learning experience and next year's inventory will be different. and as others have said, thanks for being authentic, too many people show all the glam and make it seem like conventions are easy!
Yeah so basically all that inventory was given to us by a family member who was downsizing his LARGE collection and the deal he made with us is everything we sell he gets 25% of the profits and we get 75% since we are taking on all the work. It is a great deal. So we have no money in the inventory so there is no stock cost to deduct. It is a great deal for us
if you had no money in the inventory why not price it to move? also anime & video games will always be more popular than graphic novels and statues of 50 year old characters
Yea comic-cons suck now. Actually it's been about 15 years. Cosplayers don't carry money. They don't spend money. It's a waste of time. As a comic collector I can see you have great stuff at great prices... but small cons are worthless. I would go for bigger pop culture cons which cover games, comics and toys. Swap meets and selling online. Don't waste your time with these little cons anymore they just attract cosplayers (who again have no money).
Do you believe that you are going to do better at the next gaming convention that you'll be going to when it comes to selling items games movies you know a whole variety of items for you to sell.
Just looking at the setup man, I think your booth hindered you a lot. It was so tight that only one person could get fully in there. I know when I'm at cons and I see booths that size and there's someone else looking, I just pass right by and think "I'll get back to that later", which we all know usually isn't true for most people.
Sadly, the younger generations are more interested in manga because of the good stories and wacky characters. Anything western made has sadly been in the decline due to the current writers telling of terrible stories. Pretty sure only adults would’ve been interested in the superhero genre because they grew up on the cartoons. Also comic conventions are more like manga conventions. Better luck next time man
I sell online on eBay full time. Most of this inventory was not worth selling on eBay due to the shipping costs. Selling this stuff at a con would lead to much great profit margins.
I never quite understood going to a convention to pay ebay prices.
All of the cost none of the protections. Amazing.

I might be slow to respond but I will for sure respond
no doubt to be a little disappointed but as you said you are going to chalk it up as a learning experience and next year's inventory will be different. and as others have said, thanks for being authentic, too many people show all the glam and make it seem like conventions are easy!
Thanks Tyler I appreciate ya!
See you at SEGE. Bring n64 stuff!
I will have a TON of cool stuff but not many N64 games sadly. I do have some Controllers and accessories though
Funtastic & translucent.
Prices on retro games are just to damn high and it happened fast so it's really not a sellers or buyers market at this time.
He’s trying to complete his North American black label GameCube set below market value.
Sorry RetroWolf. See you at SEGE. Ill buy something from you there.
Sounds good! I shouldn't be hard to find!
feels like more ppl selling thn buying lol
How did you make a profit? You haven't deducted stock cost to you
Yeah so basically all that inventory was given to us by a family member who was downsizing his LARGE collection and the deal he made with us is everything we sell he gets 25% of the profits and we get 75% since we are taking on all the work. It is a great deal. So we have no money in the inventory so there is no stock cost to deduct. It is a great deal for us
Bro that kind of sucked for ya. Maybe you could’ve tried a 20% off thing right there last couple hours
Unfortunately the last few hours were dead. Foot traffic was down to nothing
Thank You for sharing the experience.
Thank you for watching!
if you had no money in the inventory why not price it to move? also anime & video games will always be more popular than graphic novels and statues of 50 year old characters
All great points!! Thanks!
Do you believe that you are going to do better at the next gaming convention that you'll be going to when it comes to selling items games movies you know a whole variety of items for you to sell.
100% will do better at SEGE
Just looking at the setup man, I think your booth hindered you a lot. It was so tight that only one person could get fully in there. I know when I'm at cons and I see booths that size and there's someone else looking, I just pass right by and think "I'll get back to that later", which we all know usually isn't true for most people.
Yeah unfortunately there was nothing we could do about that. Space was VERY VERY tight at this event
Better luck next time man
Put the work in and sell online like everyone else. You can sell that stuff easily.
I sell online on eBay full time. Most of this inventory was not worth selling on eBay due to the shipping costs. Selling this stuff at a con would lead to much great profit margins.
