      @@jameslighterGTR Been working on this song actually. Something about the tone from that Hollow takes it just notch higher than my Les Paul.

      @@rkramer49 Yeah man I've played this with an LP before too, LP has seemingly more overall punch to me. The semi-hollow really clears up the high strings and adds some definition, but I find I need a compressor or extra boost for semi-hollow solos. The LP already has the full body and sustain, but then if you crank the volume on the amp with the semi-hollow to compensate you get more sustain from the reverberation in the body. I dunno man I can ramble for days... I think your LP will still rock this song though, if you post it up pls let me know!

    This is the song that started itall for me at age 10 in 1987! My best friend couldnt get me to appreciate Rush and threw this on his tape player and I was converted haha! We still talk about the first time I heard Anthem and Ged's scream, It made me a life long rush fan! Excellent playing man i was always searching for the correct chord in the verse man so thank you! Dude, that guitar! Where the hell did you find it?!!!?!

    • @jameslighterGTR
      @jameslighterGTR  2 года назад

      Hah thanks Stephen! Great to know this song is near and dear to you. It is one of the first riffs from any guitar player that I really sat down and tried to learn note for note when I was first learning the instrument. Learning it made me a better player pretty quickly. I found that guitar online for sale by the original owner about a decade ago, I had been saving up for a 76 ES355 and was going to keep the money saved until I found one even it took years! Somehow this one came up like the week after I'd saved the necessary cash, and was purchased on Alex Lifeson's birthday August 27 2012... 100 years before 2112. Still blows my mind.

    James, how's that vibrola? I just got a 355AW with a B700 and have been wanting to make a clone, of sorts, of Whitey. Which would mean adding a vibrola, but I definitely hear a lot of mixed reviews about it. Like to hear what you have to say

    • @jameslighterGTR
      @jameslighterGTR  Год назад

      That's an awesome purchase! The vibrola on my ES-355 is sensitive, probably because of age. It can still go down, though it seems like it would cause damage somewhere if I tried to do more than a shake or fast vibrato - no extreme dives or anything. I like it as an ornament on the guitar, but I find I keep it rolled back most of the time. I used to have an ES with a Bigsby B7 (similar to your B700 I believe) and it is comparable with the Maestro which is on the old Gibson.
      I like the shape and quickness of the Maestro, but liked the "stay in place" of the Bigsby since the Maestro drops out of the way on its own a fair bit. I do believe they are comparable function-wise. My video for A Farewell to Kings has this vibrola in action, you can kind of tell that it has a limited range but is effective. Hope that helps.

      @@jameslighterGTR James, thanks so much for the reply! There are so many videos of people replacing the vibrola with a bigsby, but not the others way around. Further, Alex had, and all his 355 signature models had, a Tune O Matic Harmonica style bridge along with the Vibrola. But again, not seen as much, and lots of people say to stay with a roller bridge (mine has a Gretsch roller on it, so it's not stock).
      Kluson makes a harmonica bridge out of "bell brass" which would complete the set up of Alex's ES, and I imagine, produce a clear sustain.
      But hard to find advice!
      Will there be problems staying in tune? I get that the trem is not used a lot, not like a Floyd Rose.
      Thoughts?

    • @jameslighterGTR
      @jameslighterGTR  Год назад

      @@TheRealThomasPaine1776 Really not too sure, seemingly the harder you strike the strings with a more fragile vibrola bridge the more the tuning is affected. I try to play the 355 for a little while before recording and tune it up once or twice since its old and the neck really does get warm after a while. The more frequent I use the vibrola the more the tuning is affected, but tbh the old Gibson holds tuning better than my 2010 ES-345 with the stop tail bridge - especially after string changes.

      Hey thanks Ruben! Yes, amp volume was around 10 o'clock and gain was rolled back around 11 o'clock. Guitar volume was at about 8/10 for all rhythm. The solo was guitar volume 10/10 with the amp gain put to around 1 o'clock. The amp treble was around 2 o'clock, middle rolled back to 10 o'clock, and the bass was fairly low around 9 o'clock. The guitar parts are doubletracked with some L/R panning in the post mix. Hope that helps!
