  • RTÉ News announces the death of Irish political icon Des O'Malley, best remembered as the founder of the now defunct Progressive Democrats party.
The Limerick man entered public life at the age of 29 after being elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil TD following the 1968 Limerick East by-election caused by the sudden death of his uncle, Donagh O'Malley. However, in 1985, O'Malley, a strong opponent of Charles Haughey, was expelled from Fianna Fáil and soon set up his own political party, the Progressive Democrats. O'Malley resigned as leader in 1993 and retired from politics in 2002. The Progressive Democrats became defunct in 2009.
