L Cohen seems like a popular one. I'm not as familiar with Joni or Lou's catalogs so I'd have to do some digging, but I imagine I'd enjoy the digs. Thanks for the comment!
To keep the Dylan train coming, so to speak, it’d be awesome to hear some deeper dives into specific albums, where Bob was personally, collaborators, reception, etc. Anyway these lists have been great and much appreciated.
I would love to see you discuss Townes Van Zandt. Album tier lists, deep dives, whatever. I feel he doesn’t get the attention he deserves, his representation here on RUclips being particularly lacking. One of the greatest songwriters of all time, in my humble opinion.
I agree that Time Out of Mind is a broadly dark record, but Make You Feel My Love seems to be a genuine exception to that. Ideas for further videos: I agree with others that the bootleg series could be ranked. It could also be fun to do some top-ten lists on themes: top ten funny songs, top ten political songs, top ten cover songs, top ten Dylan sidemen through the years, etc.
I have to say Time Out of Mind is my favorite Dylan album and it ranks in my top 3 favorite albums overall. The mood is consistent and the lyrics feel like the most personal and devastating of his career. I also love Bob's voice at this stage of his career. It's so raw and expressive. "Not Dark Yet" and "Standing in the Doorway" are both Top 5 Dylan songs for me. They are longer songs but I never grow tired of them. Also, I consider Soy Bomb one of his carer highlights. The way he barely bats an eye and then rips a guitar solo - classic.
My favorites too. Love Sick, Trying to get to Heaven and Make you Feel my Love, along with the two you mentioned are some of the best of his late career and Highlands is super funny. Dunno, crazy album critically acclaimed and was a bestseller too.
Your editing style and personality are both great for this style. Keep it up and apply it to Leonard Cohen, etc, I think you are qualified to do so. Keep up the music as well!
“Time Out Of Mind” behind “Good As I Been” and “world gone wrong” is an insane take but I’m here for it. Some in depth Dylan dives would make for great content.
Obviously subjective, but it's a borderline insane take; Time Out of Mind is THE comeback album of his career that made him relevant after almost 20 years and it's generally considered one of the great albums of its genre. S-tier.
I think grouping WGW and GAIBTY together is insane. WGW is incredible, GAIBTY is merely great - and I think he is right about TOOM - its darkness drags...
One of my favorite things about this project is how often people both like my analyses and call them insane. I get it, I've been on the other side of it!
@ What you say is true about how people generally consider it, but I make a point of being mostly agnostic toward how these albums are "generally considered." Mass opinion, by virtue of its being the product of a mass, is often wrong, and usually uncritical.
@@DustinLowmanMusic totally. It’s your take and you’re entitled to it! To me “time out of mind” is a sonic masterpiece. But I love “oh mercy” even more…
Love the content man, don’t fall into the trap of trying to please the audience. No matter what some people are gonna like it and others aren’t. Do what makes you happy and I hope it continues to bring you success and joy
I love your devotion to Dylan's acoustic cover albums - I love both of them. Great thoughts on this pair being what defines folk music. When Bob was starting off in the 60s he was different than a large chunk of what was viewed as folk music (collegiate singers wearing cardigan sweaters and skirts playing sanitized folk songs). Dylan branched out with original material and kept evolving while becoming a pariah to some of the very group that previously embraced him. As for his studio output - I share your tier list other than "Time Out of Mind" is is "S" tier for me. I feel is sets the style for much of his remaining original material (yes - I find some future releases preferable to this album). Congrats on being able to monetize your channel. More Dylan material are obvious - live albums and the bootleg series. Individual song lists per album and decade plus cover material are possibilities. I like tier lists of other artists - especially artists you like. It can backfire if you don't like an artist that is usually praised. There's a RUclips discography ranking channel that has one (or two) contributors that dismissed entire catalogs by artists like Husker Du, PJ Harvey, Bob Marley, and others while praising artists universally panned. It's fine if you recognized, but backfires when you're convinced your opinion is the right opinion. It's all very subjective! (Note: not saying you are this way!). Very excited to see more content, and I now need to check out your music! Keep it up!
Thanks for these thoughts! Yeah it would be particularly interesting for an artist like Joni Mitchell, where I admire her but I've never been a huge fan - would be an interesting exercise. Cheers!
I would personally love to see more of these tier list… perhaps Cohen ? Also, I love TOOM, I have massive death anxiety so this album kind of feels like it understands me. I know it’s not precisely about that but those negative songs (Tryin’ get to heaven, standing in the doorway and not dark yet) have the feeling… they’re very nice, one of my favorite Dylan albums. PD: I’ll take a listen to your music in Spotify
As i am sure you know as well as anyone, the Dylan core are ready to follow. You are unique, interesting, and substantive in your analysis (and sometimes even right). All that is to say i am not sure if the Dylan material is enough to sustain you, but maybe one a week for ‘prestige’ or ‘love of the game’ would be worth it to you. Personally, my Bob fascination stems from vocals, music, and love songs (versus abstract lyrics analysis and/or conscious sort of themes that brought him to fame), but any analysis into the weeds would be welcome. Breaking down his vocal eras and tiers, for example. Or kind of love songs and successes. Etc., etc. Anyway, well done so far, i look forward to the last 2 (3?) decade tiers and anything that follows Bob-wise.
Love the tone and intelligence in your videos…even if I don’t agree with all your takes…but that of course is part of the fun. As to next steps, I respectfully suggest you do a ranking of the incredible Bootleg Series…and then the Live albums. All Bob, almost all the time! Thank you and cheers from Toronto. Best, JPE
Oh, yeah! Bob Tier list! And yes, you should expand a bit to other artists. Tier lists, high level reviews of artists, song deep-dives (especially of Dylan)... and we'll think of some more, I'm sure. Also, happy to see the tier reshuffle. AFA Harden, I think the harmonica impacts people's view of the album- so harsh and in your face! But that's the way it is and the songs are great. I just listened to my mono copy and it was great! (Also, I like Self Portrait. I find it enjoyable) Of the 90's albums, Good As I Been to You and World Gone Wrong are severely under-appreciated in his catalogue. Amazing! And I was in High school when Time Out of Mind came out. It got me into Dylan, so I keep it high on the list! At that time in the 90's, we were so beaten down by "Dylan as God" status in society, that many of us in the older teen years largely ignored, although appreciated, his work. This album was a rebirth for many people in my age group who were very aware of Dylan, but grew up in the Nirvana-era.
There are so many concert recordings of Bob's shows circulating now and no time to listen to them all. A deep dive into the standout performances would be invaluable.
@@DustinLowmanMusic Oh I know! I remember when the first bootlegs appeared in the Arts Workshop in the early 1970s. Sounding awful and costing the earth, but what treasures! And how we treasured them. But now I'm so spoiled for choice, most of what I download gets unheard.
I love these videos. Personally I’d have Street Legal much higher but hey, it’s not my list. 😊. I definitely think deep dives are the way to go. It seems obvious in the tier list videos that you're only scratching the surface of your thoughts on the albums and songs because you can only talk about them so much in the context of a tier list. I'd want to hear your informed opinions on specific tracks, even.
I'd be interested to see your approach on how to write a good song. I'm curious if you have a process or if there's things you learned from Dylan or other songwriters that you apply in your own work
id love to see more rankings and covers, could be nice to shed some more like on some bob adjacent artists like phil ochs or something. would also love to hear someone cover some of the more obscure bob songs
TOOM was written with Bob having just experienced his 3rd North Node Return. At this age, 55/6, it's a time of deep reflection on where your life has gone. In my Top 5 Dylan Albums
Really enjoying these ranking lists…Neil Young? Dave Matthews? Jason Isbell? John Mayer? Not sure what else ya listen to. Covers would be fantastic, too! I’ve liked and sub’d. Cheers!
Thank you for grading Good as I been to You and World Gone Wrong so highly! Love both albums, and have many fond memories. Under the Red Sky, however, is unlistenable, in my opinion. Got it as a Christmas gift, and after the "comeback" album "Oh Mercy", was so disappointed, especially with so many great musicians contributing. So it goes with Sir Bob. PS definitely do a Bootleg tier, and maybe even a live album tier (although many of them are pretty rough.)
I'd like to see your take on Dylan's song lyrics analyses. O talk about specific aspects of Dylan's art life, such as his writing method. 60s artists' tier lists I would like to see: Townes van Zandt, Dave van Ronk, Joan Baez, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, John Prine, Marianne Faithful, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, The Band.
No chance it's his best western song - Billy is far superior, Romance in Durango is far superior, Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum is far superior, etc. Man In The Long Black Coat feels like a sanitized remake of Blackjack Davey to me. But, as always, to each their own!
Good video. I’ve seen Bob over 60 times, including following him on tour for a couple summers. Best NET shows I’ve seen and worth checking out: hands down the best show I’ve ever seen is 11-22-2002 Fairfax VA. Bob sang like a man possessed, and it was Charlie Sexton’s final show before returning in 09. Spring 97 was a great tour, I recommend 4-13-97 Wayne NJ. Also 8-21-2003 Gilford NH (most gorgeous It Ain’t Me Babe I’ve ever heard), 8-23-2003 Niagara Falls, 2-18-99 Bethlehem PA, and 6-11-2004 Bonnaroo. Also Prague 95 has reached legendary status among fans, some really good high quality recordings exist and are essential. Hyde Park 96 is also spectacular.
Hey im really loving your channel and insights into all of these works! I think a really cool video would be to look at how Bob Dylan influenced, and was influenced by counter-culture in the 60s and early 70s. I find it facinating that basically every white radical from flower power hippies to full on urban guerrillas where obbsesed with Dylan
Under the Red Sky (song) is a favorite of mine, was elated to hear it twice during Outlaw Fest tour shows. One was during a literal sunset red sky. Brilliant stuff. Check out the piece on Handy Dandy written by Ratso Sloman in the Mixing up the Medicine book. Great read.
The soy bomb incident was sad, but that performance was FIRE! Way better than the album version. I used to adore 'Time Out of Mind', but the more Iearn about what it could have been, the less I like it. The original version of 'Can't Wait' is one of the best things Dylan ever recorded. The irresistible melody, the gut wrenching lyrics, the deep emotional vocals. And he traded it all in for the same safe, tepid two-note swampy blues rock that oversaturates the album. Same thing for 'Dreamin of You'. A banger track, but its lyrics cut up and divided over other songs. Don't get me wrong, 'Standing in the Doorway', 'Trying to Get to Heaven' and 'Not Dark Yet' are fantastic tracks. But the album was in desperate need of more variety.
Good As I Been To You and World Gone Wrong were high points of the early nineties for me. I played them out, improved my guitar playing through studying the songs, and felt that Bob said as much through these songs as he did through his own lyrics of the time.
I reckon like a few people in the comments that a L. Cohen rank would be excellent, but I also think a Neil Young rank would be perfect. This is another cracking vid, and I definitely agree with your Good as I Been to You and World Gone Wrong ranking
Suh an underrated period for Bob, he was rediscovering himself. 2 x Acoustic folk albums were the sign. Great MTV show and then Time out of mind.......... I remember trying to find out what was going on with Bob back then which was hard as not many had internet access until later in the 90s. Which was slow as..... :) Under The Red Sky is great fun. Almost dark-like children's fairytales
8:58 - 9:30 Love this opinion, I think you put in to words what 'folk' sounds like to my ears as well. Your "ragged people" comment reminded me Professor Skye's video titled "Is 'Like A Rolling Stone' a bad song???" where he takes issue with certain themes in the song being problematic. If you haven't seen it, I recommend checking it out. I am not sure I fully agree with his opinion but as a big Dylan fan, it definitely called into question some preconceived ideas I had about Dylan's character and mythos. Similarly, my all-time favorite band, The Mountain Goats, have a song that is both massively popular within the context of their discography, and seen as problematic (Going to Georgia, which includes references to violence against women and self-harm). The key difference is that John Darnielle, the guy from the mountain goats who is basically the whole band, is the one who stopped playing it a long time ago; not because of any backlash from the press or fans, but his own feelings on the lyrics. I would love your opinion on the Skye video if you've seen it, i think it would make a good response video or something, since it seems y'all are both bobheads. Or even a more broad opinion on bob's characters and topic choices in relation to his own self. Also: You're underrating New Morning. It's Bob's Sunflower (Beach Boys) and that is a compliment. Love the series!
Dave Van Ronk would be a great dive. I think he is key to a full understanding of the late 50s-early 60s Greenwich folk scene. Plus his music is a delight …
Folk music is the music of the people and their culture. And all cultures have their own variations of "folk" music. I agree. A lot of what is called "contemporary folk" is not really folk music. Like as much as I love Leonard Cohen, I wouldn't really call his early work folk. And Okinawan Folk music which sounds totally different from American Folk is still folk.
"Folk" has many definitions, most of which are in conflict with each other. Many people use it to mean "music played on acoustic instruments," many people use it to mean "music with a social conscience," many people use it to mean "the music of a people and their culture," as you did. It's a very messy term.
A bootleg series ranking/ review video would be good. The Bootleg Series is far more than an addendum to his career but contains some of his best studio and live recordings.
I guess it's a temperament thing. But my all-time fave album has always and still is Time Out of Mind. I also love to read existential philosophy and I love Leonard Cohen (You Want It Darker). I can try to imagine how Time Out of Mind might seem to negative to you. But to me, it's been consolation, like, there is another person out there who feels this way, and that's hopeful and encouraging.
Not sure if you’d mention checking out Dylan’s bootlegs but that could be cool, I realize that some of them can be quite daunting. Simon and Garfunkel also would be awesome continuing on to Paul Simon’s solo career
I love these tier lists, but Desire sitting next to Infidels in the B tier keeps me awake at night. Hurricane, Isis, Oh Sister, One more Cup of Coffee, so many great songs, AND the production is far superior to blood on the tracks.
Hahahaha I can recommend melatonin 🤣I don't agree with these points - Blood on the Tracks is one of his best-produced albums; Desire is slapdash, which is often fun but sometimes unimpactful. And there are several artistic directions Desire veers in that leave me cold.
@ I’m looking forward to the next tier lists, some ropey Dylan albums coming up 😂 But we do get Modern Times! You’ve nailed it so far I think mate 👍 would love to see you tackle Bowie, very similar career trajectory, lots of absolute genius, lots of trash
Unfortunately it falls into that category of "token emotional ballad" that I mentioned in the 1980s video for me. I don't dislike it, but the lyrics, rhymes, and chord progressions are very elementary; perfect for an Adele/Billy Joel song, but not worthy of a place of honor in Dylan's discography - in my humble opinion.
Then she has an immaculate taste in music ;) Would love to see your review of some Dire Straits and Pink Floyd as well - though they’re naturally quite different from Dylan I have no doubt you have some qualified opinions on them too!
I really enjoy "World Gone Wrong" and "Good As I Been to You." And I agree that Dylan performs the songs on those better than the "folksingers" of the late '50s/early '60s, who prettied up the songs too much. I think that "Time Out of Mind" is close to S tier (in your rankings). "Not Dark Yet" is amazing. I'm old, and the song has gotten better as I've aged.
I also found lyrics of the 90s acoustic albums pretty negative, which is maybe why I don’t like them more. I do enjoy like the sound of them though. Good video!
Would you be interested in "redoing" the songs you're not a huge fan of production wise to give them new life? IE "True Love Tends to Forget" with a more stripped down approach or "Don't Fall Apart on me Tonight" without the 'girls?'
I’d given up on Bob after Desire, didn’t want to be preached to. I heard his version of of all things, Froggie Went a Courtin’ and I was mesmerized, I probably would have continued to not give his new material a chance otherwise. I couldn’t pick a favourite from Good As I Been to You. I wouldn’t put it ahead of Time Out of Mind but my take on it is much closer to yours. Dirt Road Blues and Million Miles are overlooked gems on Time Out of Mind. IMHO.
BD - Best songs overall; best songs per decade; best covers; worst songs; best and worst of Bob Inc (art; whiskey; real estate etc); music video rankings; rank the movies he’s in etc.
A Leonard Cohen rank would be great, Joni Mitchell and maybe even Lou Reed would also be swell
The Lou Reed one would be wild, would love to see what he thinks of Metal Machine Music

PS definitely do a Bootleg tier, and maybe even a live album tier (although many of them are pretty rough.)
Bootleg Series + live albums on the way!
Great ideas - thanks!!
Also the hate for the Man in the long black coat is crazy; shit's had a long life and is his best Westernish song.
No chance it's his best western song - Billy is far superior, Romance in Durango is far superior, Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum is far superior, etc. Man In The Long Black Coat feels like a sanitized remake of Blackjack Davey to me. But, as always, to each their own!
@@DustinLowmanMusic i also really dig man in the long black coat, but get your take on it
Great suggestions. I love those Fall '02 shows - I don't know the late 90s as well but I'll check these out!
@ Fall 2002 may go down in history as the greatest leg ever of the NET.
@@trevorleehinson Truly. One of its absolute strongest and most adventurous
Deep dives into dylan albums would be great!
Coming right up
Some albums deep dives and reviews would be great
For sure!
That's a great idea. That was what my 2019 Dylan paper was about - situating him in a broader historical context.
@@DustinLowmanMusicis that paper avalible anywhere? I would be very interested in reading it
@ shoot me a dm on Instagram and I can email it to you! @dustinlowmanmusic
Great read.
Yeah its reputation is bad only because of the album's sound, I think. It's a cool song!
I'm inclined to agree. The TOOM stuff on Bootleg Series Vol. 8 is amazing.
Great stuff man thanks
Thanks for watching!
I would love some deep dives into albums and the bootleg series
You got it
Justice for time out of mind. Also please do more videos about the bootlegs
I will!
Good As I Been To You and World Gone Wrong were high points of the early nineties for me. I played them out, improved my guitar playing through studying the songs, and felt that Bob said as much through these songs as he did through his own lyrics of the time.
We had very similar experiences!
Deep dives into some albums would be sick
Yeah definitely. Many people seem to like this idea.
Deep dives are fun. Break down your favorite albums song by song!
Yeah great call!
For new material - a top 50 concert performances by Bob would be great (and probably a lot of work!)
Oh that's a great idea. Fortunately I've already done a lot of this prep work!!
Loved the series so far! I think should rank all of Bruce Springsteens albums next. IMO he is the heir to Dylan.
All the best
Great idea. Would love to. Thanks!
I reckon like a few people in the comments that a L. Cohen rank would be excellent, but I also think a Neil Young rank would be perfect. This is another cracking vid, and I definitely agree with your Good as I Been to You and World Gone Wrong ranking
Would love to do those two. Thanks for the thought - and glad we agree on his folk albums!
would love to see some song deep dives
Definitely!
Love this series!
Thanks!!
Id love a joni and cohen tier rank and an album by album tracks ranked for dylan
Great ideas!
I never gave much attention to Good as I Been To You and World Gone Wrong. Will give a another listening after this video
I hope you enjoy!
I think an interesting ranking would be Todd Rundgren's entire discography. The range of experimentation would be fun to see categorized
Duly noted!
8:58 - 9:30
Love this opinion, I think you put in to words what 'folk' sounds like to my ears as well.
Thanks for such a thoughtful comment! I haven't seen that video (or heard of Skye), so I'll check it out and report back!
Dave Van Ronk would be a great dive. I think he is key to a full understanding of the late 50s-early 60s Greenwich folk scene. Plus his music is a delight …
This makes me think that artist bios would be a cool project! Van Ronk is excellent.
It's a very messy term.
do one on the official bootleg series ranking and also his live album rankings
Most definitely
Would you please rank Paul McCartney’s discography? Starting with Wings and going through his solo career as well 🙌🏻
Sounds fun! Paul is my favorite Beatle
Liked, Commented, and MUDDA FLUBBIN SUBSCRIBED !!!!!!
Hahahaha hell yeah!!
I agree, my son does so many great variations of Dylan songs at his Gig.
i think a cohen deep dive would be cool, but i think you should make whatever you want. you obviously know what you are doing and are doing it well.
@folicallychallenged I appreciate that!!
A bootleg series ranking/ review video would be good. The Bootleg Series is far more than an addendum to his career but contains some of his best studio and live recordings.
Absolutely - and he's one of the few artists whose vaults are so full of quality content that the series even works.
i’d like to see you review the Performing Artist book (volume 1 is all i read)
Not sure I'm familiar - who wrote it?
@ paul williams (not that paul williams)
I guess it's a temperament thing. But my all-time fave album has always and still is Time Out of Mind. I also love to read existential philosophy and I love Leonard Cohen (You Want It Darker). I can try to imagine how Time Out of Mind might seem to negative to you. But to me, it's been consolation, like, there is another person out there who feels this way, and that's hopeful and encouraging.
Love that perspective!
would love to see a Daniel Johnston ranking
Now there's an idea
Ranking. Like the bootleg series ranking idea.
Definitely gonna happen!
That’s awesome!
I LOVE "UNDER THE RED SKY" always have!!
That might be the first time I’ve ever heard anyone say anything positive about Wiggle Wiggle. Gotta appreciate a new take
Not sure if you’d mention checking out Dylan’s bootlegs but that could be cool, I realize that some of them can be quite daunting. Simon and Garfunkel also would be awesome continuing on to Paul Simon’s solo career
Great calls
I'd love to hear a series like "how to cover Bob Dylan songs (including how NOT to cover Bob Dylan songs)"
GREAT idea!!
Love the Bob Dylan stuff
Cheers!
More tier lists of all the different bootlegs especaily the ones on spotify
For sure!
@ Great call - thanks!!
Would love to see a ranking of Beatles or beach boys
@@Breydanlives right on! I plan to do both
More Bob Dylan!
Rank all the Townes albums
Surely!
I can’t believe you didn’t mention make you feel my love 😢
Unfortunately it falls into that category of "token emotional ballad" that I mentioned in the 1980s video for me. I don't dislike it, but the lyrics, rhymes, and chord progressions are very elementary; perfect for an Adele/Billy Joel song, but not worthy of a place of honor in Dylan's discography - in my humble opinion.
you left out the bootleg series no foot of pride no blind willie mc tell?
Just studio albums for this series, bootleg series + live albums up next
@@DustinLowmanMusic i guess the bootleg series could open up a new avenue. good luck

Tier list the Bootleg series would be fantastic
For sure!
Genesis tier list!
Now that's a wild suggestion haha - my mom is a huge (Gabriel-era) Genesis fan!
Then she has an immaculate taste in music ;) Would love to see your review of some Dire Straits and Pink Floyd as well - though they’re naturally quite different from Dylan I have no doubt you have some qualified opinions on them too!
@ I've definitely spent a lot of time thinking about both. Thanks for the suggestions!
Many agree with you re: TOOM!
@@DustinLowmanMusic I appreciate you having your own opinions! That's what makes it fun!
I also found lyrics of the 90s acoustic albums pretty negative, which is maybe why I don’t like them more. I do enjoy like the sound of them though. Good video!
Thanks!!
Would you be interested in "redoing" the songs you're not a huge fan of production wise to give them new life? IE "True Love Tends to Forget" with a more stripped down approach or "Don't Fall Apart on me Tonight" without the 'girls?'
THAT IS A GREAT IDEA
To reiterate others: Joni Mitchell catalogue ranked!
I'd also love a randy newman tier list
Ah yeah great call
I’d given up on Bob after Desire, didn’t want to be preached to. I heard his version of of all things, Froggie Went a Courtin’ and I was mesmerized, I probably would have continued to not give his new material a chance otherwise. I couldn’t pick a favourite from Good As I Been to You. I wouldn’t put it ahead of Time Out of Mind but my take on it is much closer to yours. Dirt Road Blues and Million Miles are overlooked gems on Time Out of Mind. IMHO.
We played "Million Miles" at my Cafe Wha? show back in July, and I adore "Dirt Road Blues"
Goat
BD - Best songs overall; best songs per decade; best covers; worst songs; best and worst of Bob Inc (art; whiskey; real estate etc); music video rankings; rank the movies he’s in etc.
Great ideas. When I need a creative director, I know who to call!
I’d watch tier lists from other artists, also doing a tier list of live albums and stuff like that
For sure!
