Sketches used to be preliminary visions for a desired final work, but Piranesi's sketches were often his finalized visions of things that couldn't otherwise be materiallly attained. There's so much speculative fantasy, idealized remnants of ancient worlds made grander by the enthusiasm from the discoveries at the dawn of neoclassicism. when people argue architecture can't be art, i encourage them to glance at Piranesi's sketches. They are world marvels on their own right.
