I just harvested my first strawberry after being inspired to grow them by you and other home growers.
It was only the size of a nickel and pretty deformed but it was very ripe and delicious.
It's really something else to eat something you grew yourself. Thanks for showing people that they can do it too.

You should do one for planting for winter a lot of pro strawberry gardeners and even my aunt that has her whole back yard filled swears by planting them in early fall late summer to get them grown up to get the roots grown and ready then when they come to next spring they go crazy and I’ve seen it I’ve always planted in the spring but I’ve not always had so many but when I visited her house her plants where putting out so many more Barry’s per plant cuz her roots got set up earlier

Yes, often a newly planted Strawberry will not fruit, or fruit very well, the same year in which it was planted. Establish them well late summer and the following year prepare for the berry bonanza!!

Hi James, your positive energy and passion are contagious! Your strawberries are amazing! Love your detailed instruction on planting on a cone, removing flowers, and everything in between! When we had the snowstorm in Texas, one of the things I really missed was access to fresh fruits and vegetables. We had some for a few days but then we blew through them in a few days. I had started several things from seed but nothing was quite ready yet. What you’re teaching, especially about redundancy and variety, is so important and meaningful.

I planted Fairfax, a variety from the 1920s known for unsurpassed flavor. They're relatively small, soft, incredibly juicy, and almost purple in color. They're impossible to ship any distance and if you put them in a basket the ones on the bottom get squashed very easily so they've practically gone extinct. I hope the chipmunks let me have a few this year (they don't fall for the red-painted rocks trick).
