Playground brought in developers from CDPR, Rocksteady Studios, BioWare, Rockstar, Ubisoft, Ninja Theory and Lionhead Studios. So, they have devs who made Witcher 1, 2 and 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Dragon Age Origins and Inquisition, GTA5 and RDR2, Far Cry, Assassin's Creed Black Flag and Origins, Hellblade, and developers from Lionhead who worked on the previous Fable games. So, while I don't like some of what I'm seeing with this game, it's a bit disingenuous to say that they don't have the talent to make it happen. Let's just wait and see before we condemn them.

I started digging into this topic a few years back, and found a lot of stories inside the IT world that showed this was happening across the board. Intel was the industry leader in DEI. They said so themselves, with gender parity in their workforce by 2023. However, reading personal accounts, qualified top male graduates were being passed over for first year female students. It literally broke Intel. They went from something like 80% market share in all their markets, to about 40%... because their focus was no longer the product, but political points. The new CEO is cleaning house though. You either perform or you get fired.
Game development went the same way. So many companies got on the DEI bandwagon, and now they are reaping what they sow. Game development is a multi-year process, but over the last couple years we have seen what these DEI policies from almost a decade ago have done to franchises and studios.
I never pre-order, I rarely buy new titles, and I have dozens more great games than I have time to play. Studios don't understand, they are not competing against this year's releases, they are competing against every release ever. If they can't carve a unique niche, or improve upon an already great design, then the game does not get sales, and they suffer for it. Which is good...in the free market a bad product is punished by the consumer...or in other words, they get what they deserve.
As a woman I had to work my a$$ off to graduate from my university with good grades. Where are all these women who get scholarships just for being a woman?

Hard to say he left just because of the violence when he wrote the Doom Bible and designed other shooters like Rise of the Triad. It's likely he just had a different creative vision for the game that flashed with what the rest of the studio wanted to make.

It all comes down to " This game is popular and successful. If I make it my own way, then my way will be popular and successful too."
And then when it fails, they entirely skip the introspection phase and jump to "no, it's them who are wrong". The possibility that they could have been in error simply doesn't exist to them.
They feel they have no choice but to blame the consumer, because the alternative is to admit fault, which would make them lose even their dumbest customers.
