Hands down my favorite guitar channel. Comes off as honest and deals with the same issues every guitar player has. And pretty funny too. Keep it up
Peace ✌️
I didn’t exactly “quit” but when I was in the military I took about a 2 year break from guitar (subconsciously) and I really wish I didn’t. It’s back to being my favorite activity.
Glad you didn’t get evicted! As a fellow NYer (currently in Queens by way of the northeast Bronx where I spent most of my life), I’d definitely love to hear more about what happened and how you handled the situation. Noise laws can be tricky sometimes. Please share if you’re willing to do so!
You have my vote for wanting to hear the eviction story! I stay away from the plug-in stuff because I know I will end up tweaking and fiddling with settings more than actually playing. Amazing technology, but not for me…
Me too, let's hear that story!
I do not get this I literally have a mustang gtx 50 I barely spend time with it changing tones I just find something to go with the how I feel like a preset or something but is it wrong if you keep trying to find a better tone? Why is it bad? Even if you spend less time playing will it not help create a more conducive environment to playing harder or better?
@@nickandrews2255 for sure…tone chasing is great, if there is balance. I’m a new dad. My practice time these days are very limited. Every minute I’m playing is important, thats all! I know with plug-ins, I’ll get obsessed with the tone and play less! I own a Mustang LT25 and I get great sounds quickly.
I love your playing, Mike. Why do you think I subscribe and watch your videos? I like hearing you play. It's really good and fresh. Thanks for sharing, Mike.
I like your videos. And as you probably know, nobody really ever quits the guitar, it calls you like the ring of power.
god that gray se is so nice, great playing!
Thanks Mike. Love your videos man - always positive. Take care.
OPTION PARALYSIS, the bane of my existence. I have a bunch of NDSP plugins and a few others, and after a while spent tweaking all those settings, my brains start leaking out of my ears. What I've wound up doing, for the most part, is setting up everything nearly the same. Pre effects, cab & mics, EQ, post effects, all that; I set it all up the same. Then I tweak my amp settings, which are also all pretty similar, to try and limit all that eternal knob twiddling. I've got it down to a couple of plugins that I prefer over all the rest (Cali right now, but my favorites can change over time).
It seems like Sweetwater supports every RUclips musician I watch. Thank you Sweetwater for keeping the music going! (And for making my favorite online guitar shop.)
Agreed - this plugin is so much fun to play with! I use it pretty much every day.
Some of the reason why you contemplated quitting and getting into producing was due to our social construct of ‘loving music which is very much EDM based’, don’t blame ya, but glad your back into guitar. I’m 33 and have been playing for a looonnggg time in bands, cover shows, theater etc…you impress me, that’s why I keep watching your vids. Have a good one
I love your honesty! Please keep playing and honestly I’ve learned a good bit from watching your content.
Great story Mike, thanks for sharing
Yes do share your eviction tale.
I feel like if I did get into virtual sims and what not, it would be the same way for me, too many options..
I was going thru a drought of playing, because of being a full time worker...I put my favorite hobby on the backburner, for too long. Talking to someone new, gave me inspiration, and on my days off, I hooked up my BCB60 Boss board, little tube combo and my Epiphone Koa and by that afternoon, had 4 riffs/ideas. One of them, basically finished.
Note I dont have an interface, or or anything like that but, next will be is to get equipment and get it done
Lately I've been using one amp, one guitar and one pedal...it helps you develop your hand tone to step away from the gadgets.
Good thing you got to stay. Living in a van under a bridge is hard. Keep it up!!
I played for twenty years. Almost quit.
Open G tuning saved me. I’d never really experimented with alternate tunings before. My fault.
Open G is awesome. A whole new world.
Tell me you have ADHD without telling me you have ADHD. (No judgment; I'm a guitarist and a therapist who also has ADHD haha)
I stopped playing for years pretty soon after picking up a Line 6 Pod HD. So many options, I got lost in the infinite possibilities. I've learned I'm happiest when things are simple, and still prefer the ease of just picking up an acoustic.
Yet somehow I could watch videos about guitar gear for hours 🤷
It takes time and patience to forge through. Yrs of practice especially if you’re in school or in school and working.
I've been where you are, but I'm still stuck at the procrastination part....
Mike, we definitely need to hear about the eviction story!
The eviction story sounds entertaining. ;-)
Yo yo, found ya a few months ago and have learned a lot from you. Really enjoying all your content man.
But…… recently I noticed you were in an apartment and I’ll be honest my stomach dropped.
Why? I’ll tell you. Some of my lies worst memories were apartment days in NYC and Las Vegas.
Inconsiderate neighbors playing loud music, parties without any respect for their neighbors. By the time I was in Vegas we had my daughter , and if you have ever been a parent you don’t wake a sleeping baby. Well…… my neighbor above me didn’t give a sht and it got so bad it went to blows, no joke. Like I said some of the worst times of my life were apartment living.
I have an ever burning desire for the guitar and couldn’t imagine not being able to play at my home or apartment but I’d never hook up a box ac30 , a supro head, two rock head and all your other equipment straight, and maybe you don’t?
But from what I’ve seen you do. I think that’s messed up. You seem like such a genuine dude, I’d encourage you to empathize with parents, people that work nights, people that start work super early. Play with some killer headphones , get to know the neighbors and their schedules, let them have your number . Communication is key I think.
Anyway, once I learned you were in an apartment I had a flashback of that awful time in our life and felt obligated to say something.
Like I said , love the channel. You’re an amazing player .
🤘🎸🤘🎸
Ya know, you should play now, 'cause you can always quit later.
I did quit. kinda. I still noodle around. I think it's too easy to get caught up in the whole "aiming to be a virtuoso" nonsense and treat musicianship like a sport. Often I hear virtuosos play/write what are basically unlistenable songs. I won't name names but many are being talked about lately. My advice is to write something that interests you and expresses what you want to say now. Don't worry if it is terrible. In fact it may be cooler if it is a little terrible.
These videos are great and so is your playing. Just write songs.
Definitely need to hear the near eviction story
"Lazy" is a very simple word for very complicated things. It describes many, many factors including apathy, unconscious avoidance, executive dysfunction, pain avoidance, and literally anything else that might impede a person's engagement with an activity, and far too often it attributes all of them to a character flaw or choice of some kind when most of them are things the "lazy" person resents and suffers from generally MORE than any onlooker might. By and large, "lazy" is a discompassionate and clumsy word for things that require care and finesse.
I don’t believe in laziness. I think it’s just your brain telling you that you’re not interested in doing what you’re supposed to be doing. Just personal opinion. You’re right though it is a complicated mental thing that we over simplify and use as an insult to people and put people down.
@misterknightowlandco lack of interest or some kind of underlying obstacle - you can be interested and still suffer executive dysfunction or avoidance. I *want* to learn Japanese, but my brain is being very frustrating about it...
But yes, experts have started proclaiming that laziness is a myth.
Mike do you have a sg or a jazzmaster? i really like both of them :)
I like those too so u like mustangs
iuno, the whole digital is getting good thing. i think that someone's style is way more important than if the tone is modeled like 10% better than it would be if it came out of a princeton, which in itself is subjective anyway.
Like _YES_ we want to hear the story about almost being evicted! Spill the tea, guitar man! 😃🎸
I've 'almost quit guitar' a few times over the years. It's just natural to develop other interests throughout our lives, and to take a break from music. But eventually the 'itch' comes back to play, and with all those guitars lying around the house, we sooner or later get back into playing.
I need this eviction story LOL
I like how quickly he changed the title
i did quit. and came back. it helped me A TON when i stopped identifying as a musician. helped a lot. i am a cosmic eternal being who plays music. peace friend and thank you!
modeling and analog both have appeal to me. what i do think though, is i like a real amp even if there is no tone difference between modeling vs. analog, just because i guess, no need to over think it. lot of folks make tone like a court case where you have to prove you can hear the analog difference
Neural plugins, this one especially, lay out their options more thoughtfully than some of their competitors. This plugin is basically a great amp and a medium-sized, fixed pedalboard in a recording studio. Option paralysis will always exist (especially in the VST world) but Tone King Imperial might be the best we can do.
You can clean up NDSP Tone King by reducing the plugin input value to something like -12. The colors are for show...they don't have a musical effect. If you want to sculpt the sound more, use the graphic EQ.
I have taken many long breaks in what I consider my intermediate guitar stage. Finally getting out of the rut 15 years later now that they have these instructional videos online, WAYYYY better than tablature, just in case anyone doesn't know 😀.
Yeah dude let's hear the eviction story! Great content!
I like this guy. I almost unsubscribed but stuck it out and I’m glad I did. I just like him. His video titles are sometimes misleading but I do enjoy his opinions.
great video! i did not even know that this existed...thx, man!
Everyone learns in a stepwise fashion. You take a sudden step up, and then take some time to incorporate that step into your playing. Eventually you get bored with what you're doing, and you start looking for another step up. This is completely natural. It's important to rememeber that when you are on a plateau, try something you've never tried before. That may just point you towards your next step up. If it doesn't, try something else. But just keep trying. You will get there.
I’ve been on that plateau for 30 years
Spill the beans on that eviction story!
Setup tour ???
Eviction story! Let's have it.
i'm a bass player and i actually quit playing bass for about 5 years. now i'm trying to get back to playing. im still lazy playing the bass. i play about 3 to 4 times a week for about 30 min. to 1hr.
In most situations, you can’t compete with digital modeling. I foresee classic tube amps being coveted/collected by top recording studios. In most other situations, it just doesn’t make sense to have them.
By the way, I'm pretty sure there's no difference between the colors of amp other than the color itself. I use the colors so that I remember what preset I'm on, but they all sound the same
This poor guy has to keep pumping out these videos
I’ve been playing over 57 years & thought about quitting a couple dozen times-it always calls you back. Sometimes ya just need a break from it or it overtakes your normal life
I would like the eviction story lol
I think I'ma need that eviction story
mike do what makes you happy ps your a really good guitarist 🤟👌
Yes, I do. I need that eviction story. :)
Need a dramatic reenactment of the eviction story lol
I absolutely want to hear the almost eviction story.
Polychrome DSP is what I would easily consider the best of the best! If I had to go into that world & go without my amp, it would be that dsp & nothing else.
Man tell us the the eviction story
Not really the point of this video, but I'm curious how you learned mixing/production when you took a break from electric guitar? Any good videos/resources to share?
A very interesting vid!!🎸🎸😃
please give us the full near eviction story
I must know of this almost eviction story 😂💀
Full eviction story!! 😂🤣
I need the eviction story NOW
I feel like I can't learn music like riffs and songs like I used to
I almost got a heart attack after seeing that title lol
Need the eviction story! I got evicted once for band practices. But now I own my house so that’s impossible now :)
Hey Mike, what does VST stand for?
lol i've quit the guitar because no progress that I thought I would have but I just keep coming back
I would like to hear the eviction story
Yes I want to know the eviction story!!
I'm pretty sure you've mentioned before that you almost quit
Make a video of the eviction story!
We need the Eviction Story
❤
“50/50 got it right ..”??? 😂😂😂
I know there has been times in which I wanted to quit the electric guitar ,, not because of lack of tones, but because I have arthritis in my hands the they get swollen,, question to get those tones ,, is it best to use a MacBook or windows laptop ?? Thank you all in advance 😊
Anyone else notice the dead pixel at 6:25?
I want to hear the eviction story lol
Dude looks like Marvin Berry from “ back to the future”
First of all, don't try to copy John Mayer style, gear and jm comments. The 80% of your yt channel is about JM. The only real avenue is, study. The genuine study of the instrument. Most novice musicians copy licks and upload jm songs and that is useless in real Blues repertoires. Only if you will make a tribute band to Jm. You need to find your own sound and that requires an (honest) and (genuine) search from the studio and the different styles, with a [competent] teacher.
I never leave comments on videos but I really want to hear the story about how you nearly got evicted.
can you show us your guitar+computer setup
Everything you've said was Greek to me. 😅 Maybe one day I'll learn all that jazz. EVICTION STORY!!!!
Doubt digital will truly replace analog....because of the missing "feel" you also get in an amp'd room.... My Tone King Imp is great...but does not give me the same 'feel'...air...volume...openness as my Hamstead Artist 20RT. Every body sensory pathway gets a taste when it comes to music, tone, sound, etc...even sight gets a say in picking a new guitar, for example. Love my Roland Blues Cube...but it lacks openness..something....feel? Great job, Mr Cole!!!
I agree. I grew up playing amps and I’ll always enjoy it best. I don’t insult people who use other devices or get stuck in tone debates.
With vsts you can't feedback unless you got a sustainiac or similar. Sometimes feedback is good for a backing track to add some ambience and spook-factor
Almost…thank you.
FULL EVICTION STORY.
Thanks for not quitting guitar for Nickelback 😂
damn we really almost lose a nobody
I quit playing guitar... until the next time.
do you use 202200, 244200 or x44200?
Hello i need a help
You should listen to ih8 gtr by berried alive
Option paralysis?
I call it paralysis by analysis. Basically you spend so much time analyzing something that you just can't commit to anything.
I almost cut my hair
A bit clickbaity
Ahhh the guitar player Nick Jonas haha
I would buy a used car off Mike and if it broke down on the way home I'd still be convinced he had no idea it was a piece of crap, He just comes across as 100% honest in his reviews. The evil guitar companies will have spotted this already so we - and Mike - must stay strong and not take the massive corporate bucks because the integrity of this guitar channel is... umm, excuse me but exactly how many zeroes did you say? Well... as long as I do "most" of the videos with 100% integrity then the odd one to pay for the Tesla and the odd holiday is hardly shilling is it? 😂😂😂😂 Joking aside - stay being you Mike, we love ya !
