LAFC didn’t want to risk Vela and Bouanga getting injured. On Tuesday they face the crosstown rivals LA Galaxy in the US open cup’s round of 16 El Traffico. Then, and more importantly, a week later LAFC faces Leon away in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions League final, and then the second leg the following week. That’s why they didn’t start, they wanted to ensure that those 2 were healthy for the next 3 very important games.

This was the 3rd game in 8 days for LAFC and they have a US Open Cup game on Tuesday, then the next Wednesday is first leg of CCL Finals, starting a stretch that will see them play 7 games in 24 days. They’re juggling some injuries right now too. Sergi Palencia started at CB and he’s normally a RB.
I was at the game and SJ’s goal was so weird we couldn’t tell at first the ball went in the net until we saw the Earthquake players jumping up and down. I sit on the opposite 18 and it seemed like everyone stopped on the play.

Another great analysis! Honestly can't get enough of your commentary, very even-handed. Especially enjoyed the level of detail breaking down McCarthy and Biuk.
To answer the question regarding Starting XI for LAFC: This match saw a heavily rotated squad due to a congested schedule with the CONCACAF Champions League final and US Open Cup (our version of FA Cup) knockout game against rival Galaxy in only a weeks time, in addition to this league match. Bouanga/Vela/Tillman were rested in consideration of this, and were eventually subbed on around the 70' mark to chase the winning goal.
Some context on San Jose: Cristian Espinoza of San Jose has put the league on notice this season and was second in the golden boot race entering the match (the leader being... Denis Bouanga 😂). The previous meeting with LAFC, Espinoza bagged a brace, and CB Maldonado made necessary adjustments this time round.
An interesting wrinkle was LAFC's defensive performance despite several key injuries. 3 CBs Chiellini, Murrillo, and Long were all out due to injury. This led to Palencia, a natural Fullback being played as a Centerback. He performed brilliantly in consideration of this.

Bouanga and Vela were on the bench cause of fixture congestion. At the end of april they had champions league, then in May they had midweek open cup, then a saturday, Wednesday, Saturday sched this past week, now el traffico with the LA Galaxy in open cup round of 16 on Tuesday, then games on Saturday again then midweek champions league then weekend MLS then more champions league then weekend MLS again then midweek MLS again then another weekend game with a potential for another midweek open cup match right after if they advance. It’s just fixture congestion management.

SJ's first goal was a mistake all the way around. The defenders and keeper either thought it was going wide, or simply failed to communicate with each other (which is primarily the keeper's responsibility - but it's on everyone). It was an error on the shooter's part, because it was obviously meant to be a cross - and as crosses go, that was horsesh1t.
Nevertheless, SJ were unlucky not to have scored by that point. Sometimes, karma just balances the scales.

If LAFC look nervy as you said it may be hangover from their last results. On Wednesday they drew 1-1 at home to Sporting Kansas City, one of the worst teams in the entire league.

LAFC beat San Jose just like Nashville beat Charlotte on a 93rd minute penalty. At least the one int he city of angels was actually a penalty not a joke like in Charlotte.
