    I had this exact guitar in even better condition. I bought it off of my girlfriends father for $30 back when I was in middle school in the early 80s. He was the original owner and had purchased it as a teenager through Sears and Roebuck. It had been sitting in a closet for over 20 years. It’s the first electric guitar I owned and I did my best to sound like Tony Iommi and Ace Frehley. The action was high but I did my best. It didn’t sound quite right, but I didn’t give up. Eventually, I ended up playing everything from ZZ Top to Judas Priest and Dio on it. I eventually upgraded to a Gibson SG. Twenty years later I took that $30 investment that I paid for the guitar and sold it for $400. I kind of miss it for the nostalgia of it.

      I went through my Amp in case and put in new modern filter capacitors and replaced all the shit 2 cent jelly beans with modern MOJO mustards. Thing is WAY better after that. lots more bottom end and it seems to be significantly clearer.

    My cousin, who’s a year younger than me, started playing acoustic guitar along with me in 1962. We both took lessons from the same folk guitar teacher, learning the same songs, but we didn’t want to be folk singers; we wanted to play rock’n’roll, which in the early ‘60s meant surf instrumentals, doo-wop, soul music, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, that sort of thing. We played those nylon-string acoustics for a couple of years, and in 1964 a couple of major developments occurred. The Beatles hit, and we both got electric guitars within a month of each other and started rockin’ as best we could. I got a Teisco-made St George two-pickup guitar and a little Melody practice amp, and he got the Silvertone/Danelectro single-pickup guitar with the amp in the case. I was the lead guitarist and lead singer, and my cousin played rhythm guitar and tried to sing. It was just us two at first, but a few blocks away there lived a kid who played drum. Just one-all he had was a snare drum. So he became our drummer. No bass player; nobody in the neighborhood had a bass. We actually played a few gigs like that-our first one was in someone’s living room, and we made five dollars apiece! I didn’t get to play with an actual bass player until 1967, and by that time I’d ditched the St George and Melody, and gotten a Vox Phantom XII and a Vox Cambridge Reverb amp! (12-strings were still popular in ‘67, although I’d gotten the Vox gear in ‘66. It didn’t last long…

      They're exceptionally light instruments, they only weigh about 5 pounds. I had to crown the frets on mine, though. I also took the non-original saddle and cut it in 3 so I could intonate the strings properly. (The saddles are held down by tension. Archtop Acoustics did this for decades.)

    These are great playing guitars if you know how to set ‘em up (or get one from someone else who knows). The secret is in the neck tilt adjuster…don’t be afraid to use it.
    Mine is from 1962 and sounds killer through every amp I own except the one built into its case. ☺️ As you can hear that amp is for emergency use only. It’s a cool guitar for quiet unplugged playing too: has a fuller tone than you might expect.

My aunt had one of these guitar and Amplifiers that she had bought From one of the neighborhood Drugs Then she started calling my mom to tell me to come. Over, try to teach her how to play guitar. Which was really cool. Her and my mom and the other sister.
    Could sing harmonies like you would not believe. Awsome simpler times but I remember my mom's two sisters would come over to our house and they would be talking and they would come to where I was playing my guitar and and give me a lot of grief LOL I used to make my mom so mad I would grab my guitar and my little silver tone amp I'm going to tell her I'm going to my room to play with myself oh my God that made my mom so furious with her two sisters sitting there LOL

    • @charlesbolton8471
      @charlesbolton8471 Год назад

      Back in the day Sears actually sold EVERYTHING. The truth is it isn’t really that different today, because Amazon is exactly what Sears was back then.
      It is unfortunate what Eddie Lampert did to Sears/Kmart, but that’s an entirely different conversation.

    • @101Volts
      @101Volts 9 месяцев назад

      @@charlesbolton8471 Sears weren't the only company doing it, though. There were many other department stores back then, and I can name a few, all with their own brand names:
      J. C. Penney - "Penncrest"
      Otasco - "Montclair"
      Western Auto - "Truetone"
      White's - "Catalina"
      Catalogs:
      Alden's - "Holiday"
      Spiegel Catalog - "Old Kraftsman."
      A little bit unsurprisingly, many guitars sold under these brands came from Harmony and Kay. Danelectro also supplied guitars, but I'm not sure if they supplied any to any companies except Sears for the Silvertone moniker. Harmony and Kay also sold under the Silvertone name.
      Pre-1970 Department Store Guitars often do have a good place on the affordability scale, thankfully... A lot of people *still* haven't shaken that idea that they're all "plywood junk" or some other such fiddle faddle nonsense. Well, let them - we get them cheaper.
