I had this exact guitar in even better condition. I bought it off of my girlfriends father for $30 back when I was in middle school in the early 80s. He was the original owner and had purchased it as a teenager through Sears and Roebuck. It had been sitting in a closet for over 20 years. It’s the first electric guitar I owned and I did my best to sound like Tony Iommi and Ace Frehley. The action was high but I did my best. It didn’t sound quite right, but I didn’t give up. Eventually, I ended up playing everything from ZZ Top to Judas Priest and Dio on it. I eventually upgraded to a Gibson SG. Twenty years later I took that $30 investment that I paid for the guitar and sold it for $400. I kind of miss it for the nostalgia of it.
I went through my Amp in case and put in new modern filter capacitors and replaced all the shit 2 cent jelly beans with modern MOJO mustards. Thing is WAY better after that. lots more bottom end and it seems to be significantly clearer.
I think this may be my favourite Lemmo video. You can tell he's a truly great player because he was totally in tune with the vibe of that guitar. Brilliant!
Hugely popular Christmas present for high schoolers in the ‘60’s like Honda 50’s. Those were the days my friends.
My cousin, who’s a year younger than me, started playing acoustic guitar along with me in 1962. We both took lessons from the same folk guitar teacher, learning the same songs, but we didn’t want to be folk singers; we wanted to play rock’n’roll, which in the early ‘60s meant surf instrumentals, doo-wop, soul music, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, that sort of thing. We played those nylon-string acoustics for a couple of years, and in 1964 a couple of major developments occurred. The Beatles hit, and we both got electric guitars within a month of each other and started rockin’ as best we could. I got a Teisco-made St George two-pickup guitar and a little Melody practice amp, and he got the Silvertone/Danelectro single-pickup guitar with the amp in the case. I was the lead guitarist and lead singer, and my cousin played rhythm guitar and tried to sing. It was just us two at first, but a few blocks away there lived a kid who played drum. Just one-all he had was a snare drum. So he became our drummer. No bass player; nobody in the neighborhood had a bass. We actually played a few gigs like that-our first one was in someone’s living room, and we made five dollars apiece! I didn’t get to play with an actual bass player until 1967, and by that time I’d ditched the St George and Melody, and gotten a Vox Phantom XII and a Vox Cambridge Reverb amp! (12-strings were still popular in ‘67, although I’d gotten the Vox gear in ‘66. It didn’t last long…
I have a 1449 with 2 Lipstick pickups had it for many years ,They have a cool sound especially for playing blues
Hendrix started out on a lipstick Dano so there you are.
I love these guitars so much,,, I own two of them, one doesn't have the case but they sound amazing through a vintage fender amp
Still have the one I received for my birthday in 1965. Have the case, amp is long gone. Its painted dayglo orange with peace signs and psychedelic things. Painted it in 1967.
Though I play pedal steel now, I get the Silvertone out on occasion. Thanks Dad and Mom.
Probably the best it’s ever sounded! Good work Lemmo 👌
I have this guitar and amp setup! It was my great uncles and it’s been passed down to me. Very cool guitar
This is my new fave Lemmo video. The guys gets it.
That Lemmo was the Long Ago Sound . Wow I was brought back to the 60’s when live bands sounded like this. Thanks for the memories Lemmo n Jen you edited this segment well 🎸🎸🎸👍🏻👏👏👏💕😜
Very cool guitar! Michael went easy on it. Some of the stuff he plays would set that case on fire!😉👍✌️
Ahh, the Danelectro with the 'sliding window screw down locks' for the tuners !!!!
Or, 'window lock' tuners. You're welcome everyone who were trying to place where they'd seen them before.
Mark/Jen... A HUGE THANK YOU for running this thru the original case amp! Frigging Awesome Sauce!
This Channel rocks again !
Another guitar finding its authentic voice in the skilled hands of Maestro Lemmo!
When I was a kid the Danelectro was the coolest guitar ever to me. Today we see what a quality unit they made even for retail by Sears, I'm blown away..
I agree Jen, that was actually pretty cool! Thanks to you both! Have a nice evening!
My buddy in our old garage band back in the mid 60s had one it was pretty cool. BTW I had a 1955 Harmony Stratone at the time till he got a Rickenbacker and I got Gretsch 😊
⚓️ Thanks Jen Mike 🌈
So FREAKIN' cool !!! Great demo Lemmo !! Thanks Jen !!
Cool guitar, a friend of mine had one back around 68 I think it was. I had a 1960 year model Gibson Melody Maker.
Those are such rad guitars! One of these days, when I can afford to, I'll add one to my Silvertone collection.
Wow! I haven’t seen one of those since the sixties! And in one piece! The treasures Norman comes up with! Very cool Lemmo! Awesome video Jen! Peace!
Way to trow down , dang that was fun! Holy smokes what a clever rig.
Definitely a wacky Wednesday
Had the red one second-hand in early ‘70s. - was a bear to play but because I never knew the neck could be adjusted. Wish I had it now!
Yep my first ..60's 💥
I HAD THIS SET UP IN THE 60s
My first electric, loved it! 👍👍✌❤😎
I received my 1448 brand new for Christmas around 1969. My best friend Mike also had one. Mine was black sparkle his was red sparkle. We would set the cases up on end in my dad's garage with the door open and play for the neighborhood kids. By that time I was probably 13 and Mike a little older.
Wow...this brings back great memories ...one of my best friends had this guitar...great work michael
I've got a model 1447 2 P/U model ! I bought for $20:00 plays great !
MICHAEL LEMMO ROCK'S the CLASSICS 😎🤘🎸🎆🤘🎇🌞
☮️kevin
If it sounds that good through a guitar case, I would love to hear it through a good amp.
I have one and it plays so well. It sounds outstanding through a Marshall, Fender, or any amp.
They're exceptionally light instruments, they only weigh about 5 pounds. I had to crown the frets on mine, though. I also took the non-original saddle and cut it in 3 so I could intonate the strings properly. (The saddles are held down by tension. Archtop Acoustics did this for decades.)
That was awesome...thx Michael and Jen! Now, how come I can't find it on the site...? Did Lemmo really take it home?
Our uncle had one in the early 70's. Used to play it at family get togethers.. Cool set up for sure 😎
I had this exact set up when I was a kid.
I got it at a yard sale in the early 70's, for something like $5.
I wish I had kept it!
Nice!!!
Being born in '57, these were Sears 'Wish Book" material. Never got one but did get a WingDing.
Wish i still had it (macafferri built).
Knew a guy in the early '80s with an AIC ST. Just like this.
Hot pedal was the MXR D +. He had one and i'm on my second one.
I said 'hit it!" he said 'no'. Probably right.
Friend of my dads had one , they got the job done .
I played in a group in the60s our lead guitar had one of these guitars
Just beautifully played Meester Michael...
Well, that was fun!
This is awesome!! Go Michael 😛🥳
Wow. Great choices to demo it with. Your talent always amazes me.
Tequila, brilliantly played. Great choice to match this guitar. Heck, great choice for most any guitar.
I’d say for any vintage amp have it checked out by someone that knows what they’re doing, and if it needs it, have the plug replaced with something grounded.
I had one of these in 1961 that my dad bought for me when I was first learning to play. I believe we traded it in on the 62 Les Paul SG that I still have today.
I was hoping Jen would yell "Tequila!".
The in line tuners look so funny on that headstock shape. Great song diddies for this wacky guitar 🎸 Mike.
they ccall them 'skate key tuners' often replace em
Really cool 👌
Authentic. So fine.
I still have my stock Danelectro Convertible. Never letting it go.
The Busker's delight !🇺🇲🇺🇲😁
Lemmo could play a tennis racquet and it would sound incredible.
Nice ! Same Silvertone Beck plays and bought for $60 years ago. Nice playing Lemmo!
Very 😎 cool
Love this guitar! I tried so hard to talk my parents into getting me this guitar! I told them it had everything thing , but nope. Was told my Stella & my violin was all I needed. Sigh... Maybe as a retirement gift to myself?
These are great playing guitars if you know how to set ‘em up (or get one from someone else who knows). The secret is in the neck tilt adjuster…don’t be afraid to use it.
Mine is from 1962 and sounds killer through every amp I own except the one built into its case. ☺️ As you can hear that amp is for emergency use only. It’s a cool guitar for quiet unplugged playing too: has a fuller tone than you might expect.
yea the rosewood bridge is also super important to get positioned right. luckily i know a luthier who has worked on these for decades and knows them well. he can carve one of those bridges in about 10 minutes.
eric becks guy?
@@igurath
@@jaxworlds the luthier?
yeppers.. haven't seen him lately.. @@igurath
@@jaxworlds no. im in fargo nd. there is a place here called music emporium. owner is very old school and has a lot of experience with these.
Tequila!
Sigh. I remember when I was a kid in the 1970's, they couldn't give these away. Yard sales and flea markets all day for $25-$50 bucks
Danelectros and Silvertone lipstick pickups sound way cleaner than anything I've ever heard. People don't understand how clean they can be.
My cousin had a new one in the late `60`s and I was amazed when I saw it.
I had that set. The volume was the only thing that caused me to trade up. It was convenient for practices with our garage band.
I have one of these in mint condition and It’s fun to play. Jimmy Page played a Danelectro as one of his guitars.
Special order only I believe that sounds wonderful
#nrgfreebook! 4:37 This is one of my favourites... filed under: "waaaat! That was 1 guitar.... gotta learn this!"
missed opportunity to "turn up the knob" but edit in some marshall super lead amp audio
Pretty cool! Michael can play a tennis racket and it would sound good
You're gonna go and I'm talking about in the 60s. My aunt had one of these guitar and Amplifiers that she had bought From one of the neighborhood Drugs Then she started calling my mom to tell me to come. Over, try to teach her how to play guitar. Which was really cool. Her and my mom and the other sister.
Could sing harmonies like you would not believe. Awsome simpler times but I remember my mom's two sisters would come over to our house and they would be talking and they would come to where I was playing my guitar and and give me a lot of grief LOL I used to make my mom so mad I would grab my guitar and my little silver tone amp I'm going to tell her I'm going to my room to play with myself oh my God that made my mom so furious with her two sisters sitting there LOL
If you can play, you can make anything sound good.
Well....
Wow! I dig it! I think Norm should just give you that guitar for all the amazing guitars videos you've jammed on this cool show!
What didn’t Sears sell back in the day? Different world now. LEMMO-NADE Wednesday!! 😂👍
Back in the day Sears actually sold EVERYTHING. The truth is it isn’t really that different today, because Amazon is exactly what Sears was back then.
It is unfortunate what Eddie Lampert did to Sears/Kmart, but that’s an entirely different conversation.
@@charlesbolton8471 Sears weren't the only company doing it, though. There were many other department stores back then, and I can name a few, all with their own brand names:
J. C. Penney - "Penncrest"
Otasco - "Montclair"
Western Auto - "Truetone"
White's - "Catalina"
Catalogs:
Alden's - "Holiday"
Spiegel Catalog - "Old Kraftsman."
A little bit unsurprisingly, many guitars sold under these brands came from Harmony and Kay. Danelectro also supplied guitars, but I'm not sure if they supplied any to any companies except Sears for the Silvertone moniker. Harmony and Kay also sold under the Silvertone name.
Pre-1970 Department Store Guitars often do have a good place on the affordability scale, thankfully... A lot of people *still* haven't shaken that idea that they're all "plywood junk" or some other such fiddle faddle nonsense. Well, let them - we get them cheaper.
This is sweet
That's cool, and all, but you know someone wants to hear it through the Fender amp😈
cool seeing one of these. I have 3. one is the 49, red w double pu.
Nice tribute to Pee Wee! ❤
How are you doing that bi-ri-bi-ta @ 4:45 & then again at 5:13??? Is that a sweep disguised in the up or down strum? That is awesome! I I need to learn it! lol. :) Phenomenal playing as always my friend. This is one of my fav lesser known guitars & you make it sound every bit as good as it is.
Cool 😎 video I love guitars
That’s just too cool. A real collectors piece. A way cool survivor.
Wonderfull !!!
If you enjoy playing a Guitar this much, do what you need to.
Good one! far out! I wonder how it would react with a fuzz and a reverb pedal
very good. i own a 1448 as well as the 1457. the lipstick tube pickups respond super good with dirt and fuzz. they just respond well period. beck uses one regularly on stage and recording and usually very fuzzed out. usually through one of the old silvertone amps too. great guitars well worth the money.
What.... Definitely wacky Wednesday. Rather have that guitar than a squire. Jeez. Sounds like fun. I'm a Cal bear ever since my daughter has been going there. Didn't know Lemmo is a Berkeley alumni
One friggin more comment on GOTD !
Hokay...
So Michael launches into Tequila !
On a SilverTone, on GOTD, with the original case amp??
STFU !
I had that amp, and a different version of the guitar...........Mike, you sounded fabulous ! Tequila? Really? We 14/15 year old guitarists were trying to cope with the barre chords and fingerings...
You pulled it off. Awesome!
Damn, that is so cool. Ps. Great playing. 🤘
What was the other song he was playing at the end, pretty cool riff???
Have mine.. amp works but speaker has a light buzz
Incroyable cet étui/ampli !!!
Pretty sure someone is gonna complain about too much reverb.
Danelectro...please sell me a new version of this case amp combo. Jeeeesus I love this thing. Dont overthink it. I mean id even buy a kit and make it myself. Go ahead and charge me the cost of a guitar for it, too. Just take my money.
I think read on an interview somewhere that Beck Hansen (Mellow Gold, Loser) used this type of guitar rig when he started out.
He still was in 2005, and even more recently. It's a good guitar, but it doesn't have an adjustable truss rod - it just has a metal rod in the neck, so the neck relief can't be adjusted except by which string gauges and which tuning you use.
and it’s a real good-looking guitar too!
@@janiyli-kahila It's also *very* lightweight; it's about 5 pounds total. It has a 23.50" scale length (I typed it right) and it has 19 frets, but 1 to 3 more frets are hardly missed for a *lot* of songs. It won't stop me from playing to anything Dexter Romweber recorded with one of these in the Flat Duo Jets, or solo, or under Dex Romweber Duo.
Shalom and believe me when I tell you Norman should reinvent the case the speaker the amp and a battery pack hallelujah for all guitars Amien
What was the second song?
Sounds like it's pushing out about a half watt lol
What's the name of the second song?
hi all,
does anyone know the title of the song at starting aprx 4m:30s ?
thx.
