This review inspired my to get another Dreamcast (I had sold mine in the past).. Since then I have got almost evry DC shooter in one way or another, the same for the Saturn and have discovered indie bullet hell games like Perfect Blossom! Thankyou Classic game room!! This game is awesome - obviously it looks great; what I really like as well is it keeps you coming back for more - you earn extra lives, credits, art, guides etc. the more you play - shooters like this really captivate me.
Waiting for my sticks to arrive! Ordered a pair of Topmax Enforcer sticks while I save up to get Agetec sticks. Mars Matrix will be the first game I will try them out with!
@BFKAnthony817 Thanks for the advice. I got Zero Gunner already, it´s the one where you play with a badass helicopter, right? And I would like to play the Neo CD games but I don't know how to burn a DreamCast game... I have an image file already but it's divided into 4 parts and I don't know how to merge it so I can burn it. I own Nero 7 Ultra, Roxio, DVD Fab for burning and I also have ISOBuster and daemon tools but I can't figure out qhat to do.... Can you recomend anything?
I guess I wasn't the biggest fan of Giga Wing 1 and 2 and the second one did get the Dud of the Month award too. Yeah, I got some heat for that review and Mars Matrix here looks just as crazy.
@nickter I´m with you on this. The DreamCast is a great cosole, I still have mine and ply MarsMatrix, GigaWin 2 and GunBird 2... As well as Project Justice and Street Fighter 3-Alpha 3, plus Power Stone Skies of arcadia and Grandia2... I whish Sega could bring a console with this kind of quality games as they did with the DC... :-( I miss those days...
In that they're both vertical scrolling shooters yes. In touhou no matter where you are the bullets are in a fixed pattern so you can memorize the pattern and do well. In mars matrix the enemies fire in patterns but they always fire in your direction making it much much more difficult.
I honestly must say, this is a fantastic shooter for the fact that you use only 1 button (In the arcade version for sure, but I haven't played it on DC)
@TheDabeavis the dreamcast version is just slightly different if you press A rapidly it will do your normal shot and if you wait a second before pressing A it will do the pierce cannon but if you hold the R trigger it will continuously do your pierce cannon.
@TrevHead10 I found out about the hit box rule after doing some research online awhile back. As for this game, I think the player doesn't get penalized for bumping your ship into the enemies. (besides the hit box being smaller than the ship)
dag, what an awesome looking game! want to try it, but i'm not naturally that good at intense shooters... it would take me a LONG time to master it.P but WoW, you're good at it!D some mad skills there, bro!
I've never played the Dreamcast version but I remember this being one of my favorite shmups in the arcade! I remember liking this more that Radiant Silvergun which everyone else seems to say is the best shmup ever.
@J0Diaz Get Zero Gunner 2, Under Defeat, Cannon Spike, Last Hope Pink Bullets and DUX, the last 2 which just came out within the last 2-3 years. Also, google "Dreamcast Shmups", and click the racketboy link #2. It shows just about every shooter released for the system. I am still building up my shooter collection. I might add that the Neo Geo CD emulator for the Dreamcast also has some great shooters too.
omg its all comming back to me all the days of gettin high and playing this game with friends and gettin fustrated cuz my freind cant use the bomb on time but love this game
Can anyone tell me aht are those games he mentions? I know of Radiant Sylvergun and Border Down, but I would like to track down the others to play them myself:-)
You mean much more deliberate in Mars Matrix. Nearly every bullet homes right in on the player! In Touhou it's more like pretty pattern spam. Both are interesting in their own ways.
I actually thought of the Pluto Matrix thing before you said it (lol)... It would have been better than Mars Matrix, but maybe not as good as U.N. Squadron (or Wind Squid).
a lot of vertical shooters on DC....could be this is one of the nice ones.... i would have liked more horizontal shooters like Border Down... the R-type kind of side scroller shoot 'em ups....
@DeizelMassacre I'm not a Sega fan at all, I hate all the old sonic games, though I liked Sonic Shuffle and Sonic Adventure. But even though I never liked the Genesis or master system I loved Saturn and DreamCast. I guess I just started lliking them more as I matured.... But today the DC is one of my best consoles and is still the one I play most.
@vasquez123100 Dreamcast was released in 1998 :S. Buy a seccond hand one. It's a shame that these great classic games aren't played as much as they should be.
@J0Diaz Have you heard the rumors .Some people think that sega is going to make there new arcade hardware ringedge into a console. These rumors have stemmed from the fact that sega approved a patent for Hard drive on July 7, 2009.Because of these patents, rumors have been spreading that Sega is going to release a new home console based on Ring hardware in 2011 or 2012. Sega has yet to clarify exactly why the Hard Drive and Controller patents were issued, possibly because these rumors may be true
doesnt anyone else get pissed off when they have to skip past a 30 second unrelated intro to every video? you have to wait for the intro to load before you can skip it. sure, it's not a big deal, but it's also unnecessary as hell.
@fallenangei touhou is mostly just boss battles which is all about moving in very small dodges. Arcade shmups like this, cave games and some doujin while might have tough bosses but its the parts before you meet the bosses that are the most fun. They are usually have deep and complex level design requiring the player to use allot of strategy if they want to say alive or score well. Most gamers dont understand this and dont see the complexaty at all when they play or watch a good japanese shmup
ive had this and gigawing 2 for dc for awhile now. havent even checked em out. these reviews are makin me wanna play!! too bad the gf is hogging the tv >
@nickter yeah i have a dreamcast and awsome but now on this days its geting a lil too old now im not saying its not good but it would be ok to play otherconsoles these days
"Mars it's an interesting choice, it's the fourth planet in the solar system named and the roman god of war who does shortly enjoy this, becouse of the amount of destruction bring upon the surface of mars the planet named after him!" yeah, yeah, whatever you say Mark i agree with... wait what? that doesn't make any sense XD
@ATARI800XLfan And have you heard that sega is planning on offering DreamCast games as well as Saturn games for down load via PS network and XBox Live? It's certainly awesome to be a gamer this days. Hope Sega returns to console mfg, as Nintendo returned to be the leader on the console market and portable.
@FuzzyScotsman shmups especially modern ones while been very simple to pick up and play are actually very deep and rewarding games for anyone who wants to delve deeper. Unfortunatly normal gamers dont realise this, instead thinking shmups and other old school arcade games as shallow. And it doesnt help when most non japanese made shmups (called euroshmups) really are shallow and brainless
Just got a dreamcast, the sega dreamcast arcade stick, and this game. I am in heaven.
60 FPS Action!
No other Console system can claim that BUT Dreamcast.
Clearest looking system Ever.
i just bought this game because of this video. CGR is my inspiration and guide for building my Dreamcast collection.
I just love this game.
I'm almost managing to 1CC it. Almost. I can already get to the last boss!
the only thing disappointing out this video is that I must wait to see parts 2 & 3. Great F**'n review Mark... keep em up!

I still have yet to play this game. But it looks like now I have to! Awesome review. I can not wait for part 2!
Waiting for my sticks to arrive!
Ordered a pair of Topmax Enforcer sticks while I save up to get Agetec sticks.
Mars Matrix will be the first game I will try them out with!
I vaguely remember playing this in middle school it was pretty fun back the
your one of the best shoot em up players ive ever seeen lol, ever time you review one you like, never die lol
@BFKAnthony817 Thanks for the advice. I got Zero Gunner already, it´s the one where you play with a badass helicopter, right? hey dude, have you done pt 3 and 4 yet? as i cant find em..
@nickter I´m with you on this. The DreamCast is a great cosole, I still have mine and ply MarsMatrix, GigaWin 2 and GunBird 2... Dude, that guys Battle ship took on the whole Universes Military!
The Sega Dreamcast had such variety in great games. AND STILL LOOK s GREAT anno 2011.BOTH IN 3 -D and 2-D ;)
THIS... GAME... LOOKS... AWESOME!!!!
The intro of this port makes more sense than the intro of the Arcade
@TrevHead10 I found out about the hit box rule after doing some research online awhile back. As for this game, I think the player doesn't get penalized for bumping your ship into the enemies. (besides the hit box being smaller than the ship)

Holy crap, the game looks hard enough already!
i got this game on my PSP CPS2 emulator it IS awesome. Giga wing is cool as hell too.
this looks like a simply amazing shmup, I will have to get it if I get a dreamcast again.
Looks like a crazy-fun game.
omg its all comming back to me all the days of gettin high and playing this game with friends and gettin fustrated cuz my freind cant use the bomb on time but love this game
They are basically just the same thing. Except the romans call him mars and the Greeks call him Ares. But Ares came first in case you are wondering.
I'm naming my new drink Pink Hurricane, Mark will be the first to get it!
Been playing this since march when ive had free time from work
Still havent beat it but getting closer
poor Pluto. i loved the little bugger.
good thing CGRHD isn't broadcasting from Pluto. that would suck. now everything is still fine. phew.
Can anyone tell me aht are those games he mentions? I know of Radiant Sylvergun and Border Down, but I would like to track down the others to play them myself:-)
oh god i miss this game :(
That looks like absoloutely fucking epic!
@ryanc519 like in all shmups, a bullet hits your ships hit box which is usually smaller then the ship, in this game its the ships cockpit.
Does it have versions for Ps3 or the X360?
By the way I miss this two-part reviews of games in more details... and less daily reviews from Mark, and CGR, would help with that.
zanychelly Nope. Only on the Dreamcast.
Russell Doty
:( thanks man
I saw that first end boss and I'm like "HOOOOOOOOOOOLY *CRAP*!"
This game was ABSOLUTELY BONKERS!!! FUN!! FUN!! FUN!!!!
Just because Pluto was demoted from planet status doesn’t mean you can’t make “Pluto Matrix.”
Damn you own on the first stage boss!
Damn this game looks fun!
You mean much more deliberate in Mars Matrix. Nearly every bullet homes right in on the player! In Touhou it's more like pretty pattern spam. Both are interesting in their own ways.
so many hours spent playing this game on my dreamcast back in the days
You and me both bru!! Just recently picked up a new DC, gonna re live those fun days!!😁👍
I actually thought of the Pluto Matrix thing before you said it (lol)... It would have been better than Mars Matrix, but maybe not as good as U.N. Squadron (or Wind Squid).
The Raiden series has been around since the 16-bit days.
a lot of vertical shooters on DC....could be this is one of the nice ones....
i would have liked more horizontal shooters like Border Down...
the R-type kind of side scroller shoot 'em ups....
this game is holy hell hard
@nickter yeah but the dreamcast era was like the 80s or 90s
it was good while it lasted
he sound real high
Great review Mark! Mars is cool!
This game is hectic... Need!
You can just watch it forever
@DeizelMassacre I'm not a Sega fan at all, I hate all the old sonic games, though I liked Sonic Shuffle and Sonic Adventure. I'm re-watching these old CGR episodes in 2019 because I miss passionate funny high quality video game content. It's all so damn generic these days.
Just picked up a new DC today!! I had this game back in the day, on my 1st DC console! Gotta get this game again!! 👍👍
the one system that should have stayed in the war but should have had a better contoller layout
@fallenangei touhou is mostly just boss battles which is all about moving in very small dodges. Yeah definitely. I got what I would consider somewhat decent at touhou for someone who casually played it and I've never been good at mars matrix.
ive had this and gigawing 2 for dc for awhile now. havent even checked em out. these reviews are makin me wanna play!! too bad the gf is hogging the tv >
graphics anrnt everything, playability counts the most especially in a shooter
@nickter yeah i have a dreamcast and awsome but now on this days its geting a lil too old now im not saying its not good but it would be ok to play otherconsoles these days
from what I know, Pluto is smaller then our moon
I just bought this game a week ago and it is pretty hard. I can only get to level 6 on a single play through and that is if I'm lucky!
btw there could be a "matrix" on pluto even if it's not considered a planet lol
you got that right
you don't have to absorb all the bullets you can reflect them back by stopping your absorption buddy!
"Mars it's an interesting choice, it's the fourth planet in the solar system named and the roman god of war who does shortly enjoy this, becouse of the amount of destruction bring upon the surface of mars the planet named after him!"
yeah, yeah, whatever you say Mark i agree with... wait what? that doesn't make any sense XD
@bluesBro18 Except for the Seaman episode.
This game looks bad ass. Great review as always.
"Holy Sh*t Balls!"
I have this game, and for a Bullet hell Shooter , it isn't that hard. (but that doesn't mean it's easy either)
This is actually quite hard to find, now.
Well I see tons of bullets in Touhou and I see tons of bullets in this. To me, its related.
hmph, thanks. So if I'm a beast in Mars Matrix I should be able to destroy those other guys huh?
right you are!! :D
pink hurricane ftw
how do you die in this game?
WIND SQUID!!!
This is a fantastic shmup, one of the Dreamcast's finest. In my opinion, it's just as good as Giga Wing, though the latter is far more easy going.
@S0ryiu yeah mushihimesama its the same in the whole game....its perfect for the guys who like 1CC but not for old school shmupers
@bluesBro18 Clearly you haven't seen the Seaman review.
@TrevHead10 I couldn't have put it better myself.
damn you for convincing me that i need this game!
you could have started the review off with the price...
7:00 Shooter God, hmmmm... May I direct you to Terryfuckwitt?
Anyone any idea what the song at the start is called?
or is it an original piece?
@FuzzyScotsman shmups especially modern ones while been very simple to pick up and play are actually very deep and rewarding games for anyone who wants to delve deeper. Unfortunatly normal gamers dont realise this, instead thinking shmups and other old school arcade games as shallow. And it doesnt help when most non japanese made shmups (called euroshmups) really are shallow and brainless
Awesome like the game is!
Game looks awesome (and hard as hell)
God Of War,
Fitting.
i got the official soundtrack of this.
how about a Dreamcast! that's something.
They are selling games like this for the dreamcast for more money than a dreamcast.
"it's a good thing they named the game mars matrix and not pluto matrix since pluto has been declassified as a planet" this does not make any sense!
Matrix Invaders
