You know chief, I look at you, listen to you, I see my late uncle. You don't look like him, you don't sound like him. But I see a lot of him in you.
He was a chief engineer on merchant vessels for many years. I read so many of his books about electrical topics and learned much from those books.
My uncle was very skilled. Electrical, HVAC, you name it. He had lots of stories. Many trips to Viet Nam during the 60's and 70's.
It's like the ghost of my uncle on RUclips and you are nothing alike personally but almost like a twin professionally.
Best regards and good fortunes on your travels.

As a brand new deckhand in 70's I was on-boarded in Anacortes Washington onto Overseas Alice, an oil tanker bound for Alaska. The burly bosun ordered the crew to the forecastle for a meet & greet. There he lambasted us with "You son-of-bit*&*& better not f*&*-around, If you plan on not following orders, lets have it out here and now. I'll whip your ass up and down the floor. etc-etc.......Anyone? Anyone? Good, go stow your gear." Later on watch he encouraged me on the great life the SIU (Seafarer International Union) provided him; a new Ford Thunderbird, a couple of houses for him and his wonderful wife. But the tone had been set. And topped with the rollingest voyage I never could have imagined. The good part? The Alaska coast line was unreal.

The last time i was inside a ship's engine room, i was probably 12 years old. Was a Greek tanker with a 7 cylinder main engine. I wish i had taken that career path, i never got married nor had children so i think seafaring could have been a good fit. I still love ships, especially the engine room. I'm a machinist by trade but have always loved n been fascinated by mechanical creations, currently busy making a five journal high pressure water blasting pump crankshaft n it's journal journal layout makes me think of a ship's main engine crank.

The right amount of rest? I'd held back a story.
In 87 USN there was an E5 Messman 2nd class. He scrubbed an oven in the Wardroom galley (kitchen). He left a cotton bar-mop towel in the oven on self-cleaning cycle. Then he fell asleep.
Under an hour later it burst into flame. The O2 level, officers country, filled with smoke. NO ONE DIED. Very well could have been disastrous.
