Oceania is a high end cruise line which explains why the demographic is older. Younger folks are usually on Carnival and Norwegian. Would it be worth the cost in your opinion? You were very fortunate to go at their expense.

We have cruised a bit-live in a cruise port so it's easy for us to go. We pretty much stay on the ship- rarely do excursions. It's a great time to look at the beautiful views, go to things on the ship, r&r, read, sleep in and come back refreshed. It all depends on what you want from a vacation. Cruises are great to do with groups of friends, family and reunions or celebrations as people can go off and do whatever suits their desire for activity. We usually aim to avoid big school holiday and vacation times as we are usually looking for a more low-key vibe. Also- very important to pick a cruise like that fits with your family dynamic.

Michelle you must take a river cruise. No waves or sea sickness, you are on a River, not an ocean or Sea. Gourmet food, beautiful sights from the boat, and relaxing! Daube River, Rhine River, Italian cruises. Try it. U will adore it. My favorite is AMA. But all are great

For some reason, and even after watching people who cruise all the time and listening to your experience and seeing your videos while you were on the cruise, I have never and still have NO desire whatsoever to take a cruise, anywhere! I never have, even when I was young and I don't now that I'm older. I have no idea why because I love to travel, but I want to fly there, spend my time in a city seeing the sights on the ground and move on to the next. I love flying so maybe that's why I don't have any desire to cruise, I don't know, but I'm glad you enjoyed yours!

Oceania cruise line plus the length of your cruise is why the demographic was older. Plenty of other cruise lines with younger people and families. Each Cruise line has their own "personality". Also what's included, again all depends on the cruise line. Which is why I'm a cruise specialist, to help people find and plan the right cruise line and itinerary for them. I will say. One of the biggest draws for me are those amazing ocean views and breezes. Also, getting away from always having to "decide what to do" is so freeing! Enjoyed your vlogs!

Thank you for a comprehensive review of your cruising experience. A deal breaker for me, which you mentioned, is the little time you spent getting to know a place and interacting with locals. For me the best part of a tour is the evenings when you have a leisurely local dinner after a tiring day. Another con, and I am in no way blaming the cruisers, is the fact that cruising is worse for the environment compared to flying because of the much higher emissions that go direct to the oceans.

YAY! I'm so happy that the cruise was enjoyable for you. I went on an Alaskan Cruise last Summer with a couple of family members. They have serious issues with motion sickness too. They said for the Alaskan Cruise, that by the 2nd day they were fine. They only used the patches, which helped them. I go on a cruise pretty much every year. I've been on 15 so far. Yes, the water body of water does make a difference. Europe, Canada, Alaska not a ton of movement. The Caribbean and Mexican Rivera, you will feel the ship move for sure. I hope that you do make it to Alaska one day! I've been there twice (both times in August), I will go back again for sure. We saw so many whales, otters, eagles, and bears. It was fabulous!!! You might like Celebrity Cruises if you prefer a younger demographic.

Starlink is a new internet that is getting rolled out on many cruise ships. I've read it's a big improvement. 😊 Also, to your comment about small gym and small pool, the bigger ships have bigger gyms and bigger pools (and even multiple pools), but the con is a ton more passengers. 🤣 You also saw an older crowd probably because Oceania is more expensive and you weren't traveling during school vacation. 😆 Loved your vlog!

I think that the way to travel to Alaska y on a cruise - some of the towns are tiny and don’t have the infrastructure. And the excursions are nature oriented so a cruise is the way to go.

I have cruised several times. Highly recommend cruising in Alaska! Absolutely beautiful and calm waters. And another wonderful option is a river boat cruise, say for example on the Rhine River or Danube River. Perfectly smooth sailing and beautiful unique ports everyday and sometimes staying a place more than a day. A great recommendation is Viking for River cruising. The boat only holds 200 people and no children. They plan everything for you and everything is top notch! We have a second one coming up for the Danube at Christmas and I cannot wait!

Hi Michele! I’ve been on two cruises both Carnival. Those are the most affordable and family friendly. Those tend to have a lot of entertainment. But, you’re right about the demographic of the cruise. It usually depends on the cruise line in terms of the demographic you can expect. I’ve heard that most adult only cruise lines tend to have more of the older crowd similar to what you experienced. I would recommend going on a cruise to Mexico or the Caribbean those usually have a few days at sea that allow you to enjoy the ship more!

Hi Michele, the demographic on Oceania is absolutely much older. Mainly because it is a more sophisticated, expensive, and luxury line. There's a reason why they reached out to you, as your channel is known for all things luxury. I think a cruise line that would be a good fit for you would be Celebrity cruise line. Specifically the new Edge class ships in the Retreat class suites. You get amazing food and service, combined with a younger demographic with amazing entertainment and shows. Daniel Boulud is the culinary consultant and has a restaurant on the Edge class ships. The ships are also much more modern in decor than the super traditional look of Oceania.

  • @LizLyonsPhD
    @LizLyonsPhD 3 месяца назад +2

You have identified most of my thoughts on cruises. I have only been on one, luxury cruise to Mexico in calm water and I was fine. The culture required more dressing up, like, cocktail and gown level at night for whatever reason. I have also taken that Dayliner thing around Manhattan a few times when visitors came (four hours and super boring)? I never got sick on those, but I have gotten deathly sick on yachts and even ferries so I am not rushing to cruise in the future. There are a couple of additional thoughts I want to share. I prefer driving and stopping spontaneously in small towns on the way, as well as having destination cities and reservations. That way I get to know the country as a native would. I was an anthro major at NYU and still view world experiences through the lens of that deep dive into the local scene. I prefer that. Also, the ports they took you to were a bit obscure. My mother was an educator in NJ and booked NJEA and NEA tours. I went on several and they drove me crazy. If we stopped in Pompei, they gave us 30 minutes there and then took us to a coral factory (verboten now), to spend dollars. That strikes me as some of what was happening on your cruise. Which leads me to a sensitive topic: do I want to have America wrapped around me when I travel? Maybe when I am in my 80s, I will need and appreciate that. Until then, I consider myself a sort of travel "expert" and would rather go native, by car (or train -- Acela, TGV, etc.) while I still can. Hope that isn't too candid or harsh. I really appreciated this post-analysis.

Great vlog about the pros and cons. My sister suffers from seasickness and was “trapped” on the only cruise she has taken as nothing worked for her - not even the injections the doctor gave. She was fine in the harbour and on land, but as soon as the ship was underway, she was gone. This was before the anti nausea bracelets were invented. Will recommend her to try if she ever decides to risk another cruise.

I definitely think the pool was small, but I also think the boat was on the smaller size. The big ships will have 3-5 pools depending on how big and how many passengers. My first cruise was a honeymoon cruise on a relatively small boat that had only 1 pool. Those are nice because you can dock much more often. The con is that if you get sick you can feel the waves more. Sounds like it was a success for you - so glad you had a great time.

have you considered a river cruise? The pace is slower and rivers are much calmer. The demographics are definitely older passengers. I like the slower pace of the ship with great ancient scenery passing by which you can observe from your veranda. It is by far my favorite way of cruising, but of course I’m older, 75. There is no entertainment or casinos or spas on board but you are out and about every day and are pretty tired when back on board. At home we go to bed around midnight but while cruising we’re in bed by 10. There were some days I just stayed on the ship and took the day off. We don’t take many tours but often opt to walk off the ship to enjoy the city we’re in. That’s the beauty of river cruises. You can just walk off and explore on your own.

I agree with you about the demographic. If you try the smaller cruise lines, like Seaborn or SilverSea, their ships hold about 300-600 depending on the ship. The demographic seems to be a bit younger, at least in my experience. I also agree with the con about the quickness with which you get to explore a port. I like cruises with fewer ports and a little more time at sea. It gives you a chance to really appreciate the amenities on the ship and relax a bit more. I am with you on the spa experience. Definitely not worth the price you pay - in my opinion (and I can only speak about my experience). Thank you for sharing Michele!

I went on an Alaskan cruise last summer for a family vacation. I wouldn't do that again, but I wasn't in charge of determining the cruise line or the path of the cruise, so I have a biased opinion and likely would have a different opinion if the path had more stops. We spent more time at sea than in ports. But overall, by the end of the third day I was bored and ready for it to be over. The ship wasn't a large one and had little entertainment that wasn't repetitive. I could only do so much trivia, not a gambler and am not a spa person. I'd be interested in an international cruise; however.

Most of these cruises (the more economical ones, in particular), have contracts with restaurants and sites that are typically not the best example of what the destination has to offer (trying to put it politely). I definitely agree that most cruise excursions seem too short and may not show travelers the best of the best. Your cruise seemed a bit more upscale, which might be why you were in the younger demographic. With all of that said, I would still consider Oceania because it looked like a really nice ship and the Cradle of Ancients cruise in particular docked at beautiful and interesting locations.

I’ve only gone on river cruises by AMA Waterways… which has less than 200 people on board. Sounds very different than a large cruise line.

That’s the pricier cruise my brother goes all that time. My parents and some kids did one. Also they went to Alaska. Gorg. My brother gets the balcony and has a butler. Ha ha. They cost a lot but compared to like hotel and stay. I have never gone. And everything is extra. Even where you ate I think. That’s for sure

Did you consider the ear patches for motion sickness?

You did a great job vlogging your first cruise, compliments to you - not easy to do and still enjoy yourself. I think if you try a different cruise line you won’t feel the way you do about the age demographic. You sailed a pricey line that most people our age would prefer to take when they reach a few more years in life. Most could take a few cruises for the price of one Oceania and would rather that. One day I will get to try them! 35+ cruises under my belt and I find the age demographic different on each line. For you, I think you might really enjoy Royal Caribbean or Princess but the best for people our age is Virgin Voyages. I bet you would LOVE that line! All the negatives you mention, Virgin has managed to “fix” them! Again, compliments to you on a great job vlogging and I am so glad you had very few motion issues. Hop on Virgin with us, we’d love to show you around! Hugs!

Not for me. Can’t think of anything worse than being packed in with people in close proximity. Seems very insular. My daughter did a cruise and said she was constantly eating as was everyone there. Binge fest 😂

If anyone is interested in a cruise to nowhere that’s only hours. There’s one that goes out of Fort Lauderdale.

Not really. Although now that I know Oceania has laundry - I can pack less of the basics like underwear, socks, t-shirts, etc.

tysm for deboning cruise vacationing for us! Idk if this is rude to ask, but if one wanted to go on the same adventure as you guys did, what would be the all inclusive price with excursions and such? (without the flights from and to the US ofc)

Your one time experience doesn't merit you stating cruising is for elderly. I began cruising in my 30s. I'm now 58 . Cruise lines/ships/destinations give different experiences. They're not one in the same. Royal Carribbean and Carnival are more geared toward the young at heart and families. Have you not seen Icon of the Seas? Definitely not for elderly.

Another Alaskan cruise recommendation here! It is amazing. I went with my mother and teenage son and we did so much. Whale watching, zip lining, a small plane tour, rafting through waterways. It was absolutely amazing! I can’t recommend it more. Thanks for sharing Michele!❤

Are cruise ships responsible for the most of the plastic & pollution dumbed in the ocean, the lawyers who represent them and huge fines came up in a recent thing I watched. I did want to try a cruise maybe a short one but I don't want to get all kinds of sick.

Great review. I think you really hit the main pros/cons! I had similar opinions on the one cruise I've taken (Princess, Mediterranean). Due to the all inclusiveness, we skimped on trying the local food at the individual ports, which I regret. However, a cruise gives a nice sampling, so you can hopefully go back and spent more time in the place of your choice!
