Tutorial #43 The XY Wing Part 1
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 дек 2024
- #sudokuguy #sudoku www.sudokuguy.com
Part 2 will be included in the next tutorial #44
This is another advanced technique which is rare and difficult to spot.
NOTE : the main point of the last section is to show that row 1 cell 8 will be a 7 because if the pivot is 4 or 5 in both cases the cell 8 will be a 7. I did not cover this as I should have. However please go to tutorial #44 where I show this again and explain the 7 more clearly.
NOTE In an XY wing each cell must have 2 small numbers (bi-value cells)
NOTE The 3 cells in an XY wing must have a 3X3 .e.i. each cell must have 2 out of the 3
VERY IMPORTANT.... Some subscribers have told me they are not getting notification of when I upload a new video. RUclips has been working on this issue. I am pleased to inform all my subscribers that if you click on the bell at the right side of the red subscription button, you should receive a notification from RUclips that I will be uploading something new on a particular day and time.
I will only be putting up notifications once or twice a month.
One advantage of doing this on my channel is that when I premier a new video you have the opportunity to chat with me as well if you wish.
I also recommend you look at Tutorial #57
Also if you wish to contact me see my web site to send an email to support@sudokuguy.com
To see all puzzles and FAQ go to www.sudokuguy.com Please subscribe. It's FREE and you will be notified when a new tutorial is uploaded.
At the beginning of this tutorial I talk about the fact that the nore techniques you know the easier the puzzle becomes. Also if you miss something you still may be able to solve the puzzle because you knew another technique to use.
NEW you can now go to my web site and see an INDEX OF VIDEOS under strategy headings.
Click on the number and it will take you to the video of interest.

Thought for the day. "When the going gets tough, the tough get going""
Hi all. I apologize for omitting an elimination at 4.50 of the small number 1 in block 3 cell 2. which left a big 7.
Hello 🙂 I noticed a lot of confusion in the comments. It would be beneficial to pin a comment to the top which clears up the 1 in row 1 which may be eliminated is in column 8, not in column 4 as illustrated.
I really love this guy, seriously. I have been loving sudoku since years and always got stuck at some point. After watching your super interesting videos I have learnt a lot, and keep doing sudoku just to relax. Thanks a lot for your work!

@@SudokuGuy, you must be superfast at advance level Sudoku. I love trying to best my own time score. Thank you for sharing your clever techniques.
I struggled with the written logic of this until this chap talked it through. The pivot is where you apply the logic and not the pincers. Another sub for you!
thanks Walrus.

4:50 - there is one cell you eliminated 1 from which I cannot see why (row 4 column 1). It is not 'seen' by both pincers, like the other two cells in that section.
The pivot can "see" both cells. That is the key. I hope I have answered your question.
Thank you so much for this! I'd read the theory for the XY wing technique but I just couldn't seem to get the hang of it, but you explained it so well I finally finished the sudoku I was stuck on. Amazing work

In your final example, the XY-Wing does not prove that the 1 in R1C4 is False.
You are right. I should have mentioned this. Thanks for your feedback.
I have made some improvements on the XY wing in the next tutorial.
wow
@@SudokuGuy Could you not add an addendum to the video? I am confused now as to what actually can be concluded from the XY wing in the second example.
@@Anione111 I guess the easiest way to think about it is that in order to be able to eliminate a number the cell must be able to "see" both X and Y, and must contain the number that is common to both X and Y (1 in this case). Only the cells R2C4 and R2C5 can "see" both X (same block) and Y (same row), so the "1" can be eliminated from both of those cells. Since the cell in R1C4 can only see X, but has no relationship with Y, the 1 can't be eliminated from that cell.

In the top example, if the pivot becomes a 5, how do you eliminate the 1 from row 1, column 4? R1C4 and R1C5 could still be 1
If the pivot becomes a 5 then row 2 c9 becomes a 1 r 1 c 8 becomes a 7. the 1 will be solved further on in the puzzle . I hope this answers your question
I think I might need to see more of the puzzle because I still get a bit confused. Or it could be just cuz I am still new and learning. Either way the videos are very helpful! Thank you!!

Hi Gertrude. The picot has only 2 digits and the pincers only have 2 digits . the pincers are usually in 2 blocks next to each other. The key is to spot which cell can "see" both pincers.. Hope this helps Robin.

New to Sudoku....Please could you clarify if for me -- before applying the XY wing technique...do we need to establish that the numbers in the pivot and X and Y cells are the only possible numbers that could go into the cells?
No there can be other numbers. I use only one number to show easily the effect. I have another tutorial coming which shows how even having other numbers in the X Y cells can make a big difference.

How to know which pair to take as a pivot
By looking at the numbers in the pincers and checking whether another cell can see both ends of the pincers. If it can then it can be removed. The little numbers are always a 3X3 3 cells can each be one of the numbers only.

In the XY wing how to identify Pivot and Pincers? A pincer can become Pivot also.. For example take three cells having candidates 27, 17 and 12. If I take 27 as Pivot then, 17 and 12 are Pincers. But if I assume 17 as Pivot then 27 ,12 are pincers. Or if I assume 12 as Pivot then 27,17 are Pincers? So which is correct? What is the logic to identify correct Pivot in XY wing?

Hello sir. How can u selecting the pivot. Because in gour first ex accordingto your pivot the clock is half past 2. But if you select the top rght as a pivot the clock will be 25 to nine. So what is the logic to select the pivot?
It can "see" the other 2 cells. One in the block and the other along the row.
Thank you for the technique. However, I have a better question. Is there any resource for actually PRACTICING this technique?
I first saw this about a year ago, but forgot how to do it because I haven't seen it since.
You will only find this in advanced levels of puzzles. One thing I will say is this. the XY wing often will enable you to solve the rest of the puzzle. spotting them requires practice and patience. 3 cells with 2 small numbers with the numbers only being 3 different #. Happy spotting.
@@SudokuGuy actually, because of its shape, I find it easy to spot. I just never see it anywhere.

How do you find out which one the pivot is?
Good question. imagine that the pivot is the centre of a clock and the pincers become the end of the hour hand and the minute hand.
Nice, I still trying to understand
Hang in there Amit. this is a pattern which is hard to spot.
Doesn't it take much time to write possible numbers in all boxes?
But your method of teaching is very good.
You are right. Avoid it if you can by using Snyder notation. However there are many puzzles where you have no alternative but to put all possible number in a cell. This is time consuming and messy. If this occurs look at tutorials from # 20 and up and you will see how to eliminate small numbers. Always use Snyder notation to begin with. i.e. never more that 2 small numbers in a cell.
Your explanation is easy to understand. You just got a new subscriber. Cheers!

I think the other ramifications of that last example would be that 1/8 has to be a 7, correct?
Yes.
But I could not understand how to identify the pivot?
Yes a pivot is hard to spot. Look for a 3 cells with only 3 numbers which is called a 3X3 or Triplet. The pivot has 2 little numbers. If there is a cell which can see the pincers This is what you are looking for. if one of the numbers in the pivot is true then one of the pincers cannot be true. Same with the other number in the pivot. The cell which can see both ends of the pivot cannot be that number in the pincer. I demonstrate this better in a later tutorial. Hope this helps. Hang in there. the XY wing is difficult to find but always valuable.
Sir, in the first case , if pivot cell is 5, then 1 in the R1C4 will NOT be eliminated please.
Correct thankyou for your comment.
Thank you!!!! :)

I have a doubt . If the pivot is 4 then x=1 and the square on the right of the pivot cannot be 1 , so y must be 1 but if y=1 there is no 5 on that big square! Am I right or I’m missing something?
I suggest you look at comment D below this video. thank you for your question.

A pivot is where if you use one little number it works and also if you use the other little numbers it works for each of the pincers. Yes, I agree, it is easy to understand the logic, but what makes a "Pivot"? How can we be sure something is a pivot, and not pincer?
This XY Wing is just like Hit and Trial method , if my understanding is correct..
Hello Shweta. I am sorry but I don't agree. It is bases on logic. Please look at other tutorial where I cover this topic. go to my web site sudokuguy.com scroll down to the heading techniques and tricks and there you will see other videos where I talk about and demonstrate the XY wing.

How to spot the pivot, X and Y quickly.
honestly, when I play a puzzle I need a long time to spot it
It's OK All of us take time in the beginning. After practice spotting it becomes easier. It's a matter of knowing what to look for. Hang in there. You only find XY in hard puzzles if at all. Please look at tutorial #42 ruclips.net/video/qisbRDGFPzo/видео.html
Thank you for the help! 👌🏽✌🏽
Yes Ray. these are hard to spot and it takes practice to spot them
This cannot eliminate the small 1 in c4r1 as that cell is not seen by both X and Y cells, only seen by X
thank you Paul for your comment. You are right. see later tutorials.
@@SudokuGuy thanks - I’m slowly but surely working through your videos! Thanks for the effort and time you have invested in all of us sudoku newbies and wannabes!
Nice
Alwasy something to learn eh!
Very good technique. I appreciate your small video with new techniques. Regards
So which number are you eliminating? You say "If" this number, then the result. I get that, but I want to see you do a puzzle where you locate the XY wing and then tell us what numbers should be eliminated. That would be very helpful.
I will be doing these in real puzzles soon. I have a tutorial coming.demonstrating. To find them you require quite a few bivalue cells i.e. only 2 little numbers in a cell.
I watch your videos and never do sudoku's its fun to watch surprisng how much detail people go into mastering them.
Do you ever do timed solves or just difficult solves?
I' m not into rushing. I like to take my time and I love a challenge. I do a puzzle every day while having breakfast and listening to the news. Sometimes on very difficult puzzles I will leave it and come back to it later. Often this helps me to see what I didn't before. It is amazing how this trick works.
Please subscribe.. it's free and encourage others to do the same. Thanx!!
You can play Sudoku on this site. freesudoku.me/ Sudoku in 4 difficulty levels. Good way to train your mind
How to solve or prepair a puzzle if all the cells are empty.

That doesn't seem right. In box 3, if the first number is 5, then the 5 gets eliminated from the y cell, making that a 1. That 1 eliminates in box 2 the 1s on the same line, but there can still be a 1 on the first line of box 2.
Thanks for sharing.
