I got two very minor cases of cauliflower within my first 6 months of BJJ. I figured I was one those people who's predisposed to it, and bought a pair of cliff keen signature headgear soon after. Once you get the fit right, you barely notice it at all, and I find I'm able to fight for head position and post/pummel with my head more confidently now too. Have you noticed that the OLD STYLE Judo Gis-as recently as the 70's-had much wider sleeves at the bottom & the body of the Gi was LONGER-reaching to about mid-thigh? Nowadays, Judo Gis have pencil sleeves and the tail only reaches 4 or 5-Inches below the belt. CONTEMPORARY Judo Gis look more like Brazilian Jujitsu Gis. I understand that having less fabric gives a competitive advantage-But JUDO GiS should look like JUDO GIS-NOT BRAZILIAN JUJITSU GIS!!! Does ANYONE market an Old Style Gi that fits properly!?!
If you're in Canada or the US i would recommend Fushida. They are based in BC Canada and depending on shipping, they are at a pretty reasonable price. Sturdy materials and stiff collar. I bought mine at the same time as my Matsuru one, and the stitching is holding up much better. Not IJF legal though, if that matters to you.
You can be sure that I'll do whatever I can to not die slowly in a mutilated and unhealthy body. If I can be in top shape until my last day, that would be a blessing. I don't want to wither away from wounds and illness for years before I leave this world.
Interestingly, I had a ring ripped out when I forgot. Why did I feel I needed that ring? Why did Dumbo have a feather? My ring didn't help make me fly.

My doctor outright refused to drain the ear. Instead he told that ibuprofen is going to reduce the swelling before it have the chance to harden if taken while the ear is still freshly swollen.

Didn't know about that water polo headgear was so soft. I've never been worried about it, but I might grab some to have when I tutor people. May just be one of those things that tips someone past the edge of actually engaging or not.
@@RamseyDewey yeah, noticed that after looking. Luckily, the kind you mentioned is easily identifiable via the picture you put up. Always helpful, coach.
The trick to not getting cauliflower ear, is to want to get cauliflower ear! I've been training 15 years and have a barely noticeable spot of it on the top of my ears. I also think having smaller ears makes it more difficult to get it.
Is physical fitness self defense? Are people fixating on the bump in the night and ignoring the burger-topped burger with burger filling and a burger soda straw? Does strengthening your muscles, bones, and tendons help protect you from low falls (falls of a height not taller than your head)? Am I more likely to need CPR than a CZ Pistol? Do the benefits of an enhanced gravitational state during a fight outweigh the detriments in your long term daily life? And yes. That pun was intended.
How often does cauliflower ear come up from striking? Once in a blue moon I’ll hear about it happening from boxing or kickboxing but not nearly as often
It happens. My friend Kyle Rozewski (who has appeared on the channel a number of times) has gnarly cauliflower ears. He wrestled for years without a problem, but after an MMA fight where he took a few hammer fists to the ear, they swole up like crazy.
I've been training bjj for about 8 months and I've recently doubled my weekly training. My ears are very bruised and tender, but they haven't started to swell yet. Should I just buy protection or just let it be?
I would definitely buy. My ears hurt after just a few classes and I bought the headgear, I'm sure I'm susceptible and it hurt like crazy. No issues since.

What are your thoughts on wearing rugby headgear while grappling for cauliflower ears? I played lock for 15 years with that headgear and dont have a hint of cauliflower (i have tiny ears though so maybe that helped)
Hey Ramsey, i got a weird one for ya. My daughter has been doing mma mostly focused at bjjj for the last year and now wants her ears pierced and they can not come out for 6 months. Do you think wearing ear guards would protect her ears from being torn or should she juat chance it. She is 8 and loves to train. Shout out to sam stout and the adrenalin team.
Ooooo… piercings and grappling don’t mix well. Piercings should not be worn when grappling, both for your daughter’s safety, and her training parters’ safety. Bits of metal scraping against the skin causes cuts very quickly. Don’t chance it- if they cannot be removed, get some ear guards and cover them.
Coach 😂😂😂. I just pictured you showing up at home a mess and the wife asks, " honey what happened?" And you respond, " just my regular session of getting chewed up and receiving a few more holes". Kkk, this would do well as a superhero character.
Ramsey, I've been training BJJ for 2ish years but it's been very spread out due to a couple injuries, so I'm only a first degree white belt (that's a joke I swear but I do have 1 stripe). My most recent injury was to the shoulder, and my doctor recently said I can never train in Jiu Jitsu again. Do I try a different doctor or do I just train anyways? At this point I would rather live in pain then be unable to train again as it is my love

Bas Rutten suggested carrying around a syringe to pull the blood out of your ear if you start to get a hematoma after practicing. Seems like solid advice
I just got my first hematoma after an open mat on Friday. Drained it yesterday and now compressing it with the magnets. Is this just going to be a continual process from here on out? Before the hematoma, my ear was pretty tender and a bit puffy but I seem to have further aggravated it after rolling. I had a pocket of fluid towards the inner ear. What happens from here on out? Since I drained it, will I eventually just keep getting hematomas that need to be drained? I’m 7 months into BJJ mind you and I’m pretty sure it came from yanking my head out of guillotines and triangles which I will no longer do.

@@wati1992 Thanks.
Cauliflower will be my fear forever
With all the emphasis on grappling these days,
people seem to forget that cauliflower ears used to be associated with boxing.
I've been training jujutsu for about 13 years. No "flowers" here. Although I do not compete so that might be the thing here..
You can be sure that I'll do whatever I can to not die slowly in a mutilated and unhealthy body. If I can be in top shape until my last day, that would be a blessing. I don't want to wither away from wounds and illness for years before I leave this world.
I didn't understand what the injury was that kept you from the last event in The Championship!?
Do you regret not Finishing?
How to get cauliflower ear whit bbj or grappling technique please 😢🎉
Interestingly, I had a ring ripped out when I forgot. Why did I feel I needed that ring? Why did Dumbo have a feather? My ring didn't help make me fly.
Never had it. Had my ears cut but never anything else
In your opinion, who’s the best wrestler ever, and the best wrestler in MMA. What would happened if they fought ? Thanks in advance, and I hope that you’re doing great man.
Anyone can get cauli ear if it's smashed in alot . Shorter people suffer from it more . To avoid that and other senseless injuries English Ruby head and ear guards the best thing for it , but then it ruins alot of Grappling so it's not favoured.
My doctor outright refused to drain the ear. Instead he told that ibuprofen is going to reduce the swelling before it have the chance to harden if taken while the ear is still freshly swollen.
Did it work??
Hey Ramsey, after getting out there and train and talking to an aquintance i wondered if it makes a difference to learn mma without learning another martial art before that or if i can just go for it. Thanks and have a nice and successful week
Sorry you got injured and could not continue the ultimate self-defense championships. I’m wondering if the championships could be how old it another facility since the old one is going to be demolished by the end of the year? Maybe you can come back for season two as a referee, or if you do come back as a contestant I hope they give you enough rest time.
Didn't know about that water polo headgear was so soft. I've never been worried about it, but I might grab some to have when I tutor people. May just be one of those things that tips someone past the edge of actually engaging or not.
There are different kinds of water polo headgear. Some, like the one pictured are foam and fabric. Some have hard plastic ear covers.
If you have decent hand coordination, you can drain the ears yourself.
Is physical fitness self defense?

How often does cauliflower ear come up from striking? Once in a blue moon I’ll hear about it happening from boxing or kickboxing but not nearly as often
It happens. My friend Kyle Rozewski (who has appeared on the channel a number of times) has gnarly cauliflower ears. He wrestled for years without a problem, but after an MMA fight where he took a few hammer fists to the ear, they swole up like crazy.
I wish I had cauliflower ear. Ive been doing martial arts for over 25 years and cant get it.
So ive beeb training bjj and Muay Thai for 5 years now lost over 100 pounds and you inspired me to stop being fat and go train
Awesome!
Did the arrow point to the beard, slow growth hair
It's weird, I've had a good few hits to the ears and had my face quite literally grounded a few times too but my ears are fine
Royce Gracie don’t have cauliflower ear and he been doing bjj since he was a kid but his brother has it real bad.
Any advice for my first amateur fight, been training mma for 4 years, but its my first time actual amateur mma experience? Thank you
Train, fight, win.
Also: Keep breathing. Everyone seems to hold their breath during their first fight for some reason.

What are your thoughts on wearing rugby headgear while grappling for cauliflower ears? I played lock for 15 years with that headgear and dont have a hint of cauliflower (i have tiny ears though so maybe that helped)
Rugby headgear is great for grappling.
I've yet to get a cauliflower ear, and I hope I never get one lol.
Tbh I don't mind a bit of it, a little bit of scars for the effort won't kill you. Having balloons is another story.
@@RamseyDewey that's what I'm thinking as well. Just not sure with type af guard to get. Need something that does move. Thinking of the neoprene type.
Neoprene headgear can be great for BJJ. Something like rugby headgear works pretty well.
It is pretty rare for women to get it but after 5 years of BJJ I am one of the unlucky ones
Coach 😂😂😂. I just pictured you showing up at home a mess and the wife asks, " honey what happened?" And you respond, " just my regular session of getting chewed up and receiving a few more holes". Kkk, this would do well as a superhero character.
Head Gear …. Know fellas who’ve been grappling since they were children & HeadGear irrefutably helped
I’d recommend Bran Vezirglou’s video about injuries
Do you think Frank Dux should do stand up comedy? And do you think he would be funny?? 😁😁😂
I mean technically he has been laying down the groundwork for it for years,
Can you wear a rugby scrum cap?
I’ve tried, it’s pretty good
SUp! How is your knee, sir?
Torn PCL. It hurts a lot. I'm doing everything I can to avoid surgery, I don't know if it's going to pan out.
@@RamseyDewey Yeah I watched your zombie apocalypse episode review xD That's how I know about the knee situation. Damn I hope you manage to wolverine that without that surgery!

What's the nature of your injury?
@@RamseyDewey i haven't started grappling yet, i don't want to do ground stuff unless i know there's a way to avoid it.

This topic was going around my head for a while, serious damage, unnecessary IMO. Better programming and it should be mitigated.
coach how would you train for a zombie apocalypse?
Learn Krav Maga
Don’t forget to look up when you walk through a door just in case a Spider-Man zombie drops on your head and tears your PCL.
I completely missed the fact you tore you're pcl. Hope you get better soon. Will you be needing surgery?
Didn't know about the warterpolo helmet, were I live most people go for some type of rugby ear protection
I though this was commom knowledge 😭
I am lucky I have indestructible donkey ears lol, been in severe headlocks twisting my head out no problems with swelling ears.
Pure speculation, but I bet the wrestlers of the world are well aware that those hard plastic ear guards hurt the other guy 😅
The head is a weapon--smack em with it!
That’s probably true!
