Well that's pretty simple, Seth MacFarlane has publicly said he wanted it to die at S8 but it makes money so they just started phoning it in, hell most of the modern jokes are the Griffins remarking at how bad the show is.
Holy crap, now I realized why I dont like family guy either! I could never put my finger on it but its true, theres no humanity, no consequence, no weight to anything that happens in that show. Jokes are often offensive for the sake of it, and have no real meaning. It’s not clever at all.

Shrek is just bizarre to behold. An amazing first movie, an okay second movie with a mostly terrible third movie and a weird acid dream of a fan fiction for a fourth movie. That Dreamworks exists merely to spit at Disney makes Shrek work as a way to mock daft old princess and prince stories while drumming up the book (which I think was first?). Still, to this day, I can watch Shrek like it was anew in my life, like The Lion King or Die Hard or Predator.
The fourth movie is literally about how "shrek is love, shrek is life", because in the parallel universe where he doesn't exist there is no love and a lot of characters are dead
