Another great review, thanks! I only recently discovered (and of course subscribed to) your channel. Love that you cover most of the important points and you do so without sensationalism. I'd love to see biometrics discussed more. Perhaps it's not deserving of its own category, but I definitely think it's worthy of a minute or so in the vid. I'm switching from the s23 Ultra to the OnePlus 12 and the biometrics were a big part of my decision. I know the Sammy has an ultrasonic FPS, and that's theoretically better, but i have quite dry hands, and the ultrasonic struggles with them a bit. Less reliable than the Pixel 8 Pro's optical, and not really any faster. Plus there's a lag on the ripple animation when I unlock from the AOD. And no historic feedback on success. The face unlock is even worse. Even at its best, it's relatively slow, and at its worst, it's unreliable, with a lot of failures. So is the lift to wake feature. I know both of these are 'first world' problems, but so are ALL issues discussed in mobile phone reviews! And biometrics affect mobile users EVERY time they use their device. I've pieced together a pretty good picture of the OP12's biometrics by watching dozens of videos and speaking to an owner on Reddit, but I'd be keen to hear your thoughts too. The OnePlus 12 beats the s23u handily in terms of performance, display, haptics and battery, and for me OS (I've owned two OnePlus devices in the past, and logged the OS). I'm not a HUGE fan of the s23u's photos either, so I think I'll be fine with the OP12's cameras. It's the biometrics that I'm still undecided on. (I'm in Australia, so I couldn't buy the OP12 directly. I bought it from the Canadian OnePlus store and it's currently on its way to a friend in Canada, who will then forward it to me. So I can't test anything yet.) I'd love to hear your thoughts. 🙂
That's the thing with Samsung phones, they're very good but there's also a lot of hype and herd mentality. It's almost impossible to see a proper review/critic of their Ultra lineups. The Ultra lineups are automatically the phone of the year, even before they're released! Similar to iPhones pro Maxs. Another problem relating to this is that both Brands bank on this hype to overprice their products. When, I got the 23 Ultra, I did so based on the hype about the battery, then 2 weeks in, I realized I charged it almost as frequently as I did my Pixel 6A! Then the FPS wasn't any better than my 6A either, I only preferred that it didn't blast my face at night trying to unlock it. Getting to the 3rd week, I sold it. I was going to try the 24 Ultra because I think they got some things right this time but nah, I'm going to evaluate my options carefully.
@@raizo6895 yeah very true, in my experience. This is the third Samsung I've bought, and the fourth I've owned. S4, s6, s22u and s23u. Didn't love any of them but, like you, had reasons. Overall for me, the s23u is slightly better than the pixel 8 Pro, but still not a phone I love. Indeed the only phone I remember LOVING was the OnePlus 6.
I think a lot of people (reviewers) underestimate the IR blaster. Idk if that belongs to build quality but even tho the S24U is better in almost every category, the integration of the IR blaster almost made me go the Oneplus route. Especially since TV remotes are getting smaller and smaller and people (me) tend to lose them having one in my phone is amazing! Regarding your the alert slider: it's nice to have, but on Samsung (can't compare to other brands since I don't know about them) you have the routines in the software so I just have mines set to automatically switch between the sound modes which is even more convenient to me. My girls dad got the Oneplus and comparing it to the S24U camera they were pretty close, often I even preferred the look of Oneplus. That's pretty subjective I guess. Either way, thank you for giving such an in-depth review and keep up the good work!
I know looks are subjective but I think the back of my op12 is better looking than my iphone 15 pro and the s24u. I have the black one. Really like that sandpaper look. 😊 The op12 charges sooo fast that battery life is now irrelevant. ( for my purposes anyway and I usually have a charger near by)
I love this phone, I was such a huge fan of the S23 Ultra that I thought for sure the S24 Ultra would be my favorite phone ever and it really hasn't been. Don't get it twisted, it's awesome but it is still large, sharp cornered and for whatever in my small hands since they squared off the screen is very uncomfortable to hold. I have been using pretty much only my OnePlus 12 and feel like I'm not missing out on anything. Goodlock is great, but there are enough customizations in the OP that I am pretty content. Currently toggling between this and the pixel 8 pro and they're both great in their own ways.
@@a.m.3118 tough call, the pixel is a fantastic phone but probably the OnePlus 12 because of the processor, battery life, charging speed. The cameras are also fantastic and I don't see a huge drop off from the pixel processing. Bang for buck the OnePlus 12 is really a fantastic buy
Personally, I chose the silky black and I don't find it bland at all. It has a stealthy look with some shimmer and it looks very classy. Frankly, when I saw the flowy emerald green it's summoned up images of a disco ball hooking up with some kitchen tile and producing a love child. Normally, I love green but, that one just didn't appeal to me. I really wish that OnePlus would have released the white color globally that is exclusive to asia. It was very beautifully done and would have made a great third option. As far as the ip68 rating not being present is concerned, that doesn't really bother me. OnePlus designs every flagship phone with the equivalent of an ip68 rating but, they don't pay for the certification. Most people are unaware of this but, that certification tax on an extra $100 to the cost of the device. The IP 65 rating only adds an extra $25. To that end, they offer the ip65 to make people feel warm and fuzzy inside. Still, not paying for the ip68 certification and still offering it in the build enables 1 plus to pass the savings on to the consumer. In fact, you should definitely watch the teardown video done by JRE. If you pay attention you'll notice that all gaskets and ingress protection are present and accounted for. I'm gratified that OnePlus stuck to their guns and kept the curved glass design. It looks far more elegant and I love the ergonomics. Frankly, I detest the flat screen slab Flintstone phones that seem to be all the rage. They are very uncomfortable to hold and in my opinion they don't look anywhere near as premium. I guess it's just a matter of preference. When it comes to software, I prefer oxygen OS and color os. They are not completely the same but, they are pretty close. Personally, I detest Samsung's one UI. Don't get me wrong, it runs quite smoothly but, it's a bit confusing and is definitely not user-friendly. Furthermore, xiaomi's new OS isn't really a factor. I live in the United States and most people don't even know anything about their products. Anyway, thank you for the video. Very well done.
Decent review Mike. Toying with the idea of getting a Chinese OnePlus 12 with Oxygen OS as I want the White colour. It's worth doing as it's far cheaper than the official UK version. Am aware that Android Auto and eSim won't be available but not really fussed about those features.
Would you recommend jump from used S23 Ultra to OP 12? Difference would be around 70 euros. I was using OP 8 Pro before Samsung and it is still by far my favorite device of all the time.
I used my alert slider multiple times a day when i had a oneplus. I dont get some other reviews saying youll never touch it and its easier to just use the software to silence phone. Really? Good reviews man
The OnePlus 12 is in fact water resistant, but the cost of IP68 certification is more than the cost to build waterproof seals into each phone. Not certifying it IP68 helps to keep costs down for buyers.
I notice you got the UK version (saw the 3pin plug), any reason for that? I seem to be in the minority, but really didn't like the green colour and the fact that it you wanted the higher ram there was no other option, not even the black. White version is available in other territories and really liked the look of that, so I'm importing it, with global rom and oxygen OS, 16GB 512GB version, for a little over £700.
