10 / 4 that cold start get those batteries warm and using WD40 not starting fluid. That’s all I use when starting diesels period. You are the first person on RUclips videos I’ve watched that used WD40 I award you the golden star cold start Diesel award👍👍👍
Why do people forget about the APU. Start the APU first it will warm the coolant and charge the battery's. Its a win win. Better yet put the APU in winter mode and it will start on its own while it sits there.
What a stressful way to start your week John. I'm glad that Baby Blue started for you, after some work, but she started! Enjoyed the video, as always..
This is why you leave the apu on standby. So it keep the batteries charged up when truck sits a long time. Now the video is old but thermo king does have that setting. Also if the apu uses the coolant that the truck uses. Leaving it on standby will help keep the engine warm too. Just for future reference next time you have a thermo king apu.
My guess is that Babyblue is more than a gallon low on antifreeze in the radiator, probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have a couple of more gallons on reserve just in case.
A little safety tip. When connecting jumper cables, always connect the red (positive) first, than the black (negative). When you connect the positive last, as you did, you will get sparking. This sparking is enough to ignite any gases that may be present at a discharged battery.
Sure is mighty cold out there JBG glad Baby Blue started for you love your videos keep up the great work can't wait for your new truck. Also happy new year!
my ears and hands are aching just watching this. I had to dig my locked up trailer out of the frozen snow once (3 degrees F). Oh, but when you get it going, it's such a joy.
Has your truck been sitting for several days in those temperatures? Normally an European truck would start in seconds at -13c..Nice video though and interesting to see the job you have of starting trucks in winter over there. Also loved the scriptures at the beginning, the most important part of the whole video. I would love to see (and maybe drive?!) and American truck one day..a world away from ours here. Keep safe on the road brother.
Cheap jumper cables JBG!, a good set of cables are invaluable. Double OO cables weather proof, soldered and lightly greased with 700 amp clamps will jump start a mechanical pedaled bicycle! LOL. I made 3 sets for my kids, my son a mechanic was impressed with his after using it. My daughters well, they would trade for nice shoes.
When in doubt.. smack the storage compartment.. if it doesn't open the 1st time.. smack it again! Great vid man Edit: love how you kept a cool head through it man.. I would've been swearing at it.. but that has worked in the past for me
Obviously, it helps to have a reliable electric connection in the winter. But, buy a $30 battery tender...mount it near the battery box...make permanent attachment to the batteries...splice into block heater electric connection...every time you plug in, you are trickling a little juice to the batteries, keeps them from freezing and ready to turn motor over fast! When the battery is fully charged, it will turn itself off automatically until needed. Besides cold batteries, your other enemy in the cold is bio diesel. I have oil pan heater fuel filter heaters, fuel tank heaters. Open the door, turn the key, truck starts no matter what the temp....again, given the AC circuit stays live.
The extreme cold is a big negative for most people & animals birds but for stores selling snow shovels batteries electric space heaters winter clothing salt in bag electric companies snow removal business plumbers ( broken pipes tow truck services including jump start , firewood , on & on...they really like this weather.Must of missed a lot of other companies that benefits from the cold. Watch your step too. One postal worker in Canada was on his last week before retiring. He was a letter carrier. He slipped on some ice & hit the back of his head on the pavement. He had a headache. & did not feel right so the next day he went to the doctor/ hospital. He died. God bless you John & your family. We are having a really nice winter in the Vancouver BC area. Just trace of snow where I live & it's cold but a far cry from the deep freeze in most of the other parts of Canada & 60% of the USA.Hope it warms up for you soon. Happy New Year & always remember The Lord knows the number of hair on your head even thus He knows & loves us greatly when we give Him our day & life.
Yup, she's on her way out. Can't keep batteries in her, and now she eats coolant. Top it off she stalls whenever he walks away. The boss has got a real POS there. Poor Johnny Be Good.
worse thing is anti-freeze will eat up those new bearings especially if oil changes get a little infrequent. Good time to get oil samples run and see what is flaking off.
most truckers I know would rather let the engine idle overnight rather than go through the 'fuel consuming' process of getting the engine restarted in the morning.
it s better ground first and hot second because ground it's on all metal body so if you connect first hot and after ground and the wire it's touching any metal you can see some sparks. so he done a good job
Equipped with an APU but either it doesnt work or he shut it off. Could have had a nice warm truck and charged batteries when he returned. Glad I'm finally retired from trucking and moved South.
U should always start two stroke motors with a lubricated like wd40 or simlair product because it has lubrication. .... on my semi and tractors I have use starting fluid and also wd40 at the same time ..... think about it if I get grease on my hands or gear oil.... I use starting fluid to wash them off quick. ... not messy and dry.... well that's bad in a motor
If the repair shop would have just plugged in the battery charger overnight, it would have saved a lot of work and freezing to death, I'm just saying that's their job.
Typical Freightliner experience..What exactly was Freightliner supposed to do to BB? Plus all those new batteries you just got are shot to hell now..Drive the Southwest none of these headaches. You have the patience of Job. Call Roadside when this crap happens that might speed up your new Truck. Tell the boss you want a $20,000 bonus for this headache. Proper maintenance JBG.. North Platte here I come. Happy new Year JBG.
I think he is a very did respectful person demanding his phone and telling them where to bring he stuff and at walmart. Idk if he knows what respect is
There are supposed to be jumper connections directly to Baby Blue's starter under the hood. Forget about charging the batteries. Save some time. The owners manual should show you where they are.
JBG TRAVELS In hindsight your right. There's a reason one has six batteries vs one. If a truck was available though, go straight to those booster connections . Thanks for all the videos you do.
Get 4 gal anti freeze...looks like you were down at least 2...and have 2 in reserve. Probably why engine light is flashing. Your FL will auto shut down when the level gets too low. Don't want that to be while you are in the middle of no where. Step 2, get to a reliable repair shop, figure out where your antifreeze is going! FYI - keep a small funnel handy...then you won't be spilling fluids on the motor and ground.
I did not mean for it to sound like an excuse but we are human and make mistakes his focus was on starting the truck we do not know what he did on his pretrip
no i have not but when i was a little boy living in an island 🌴 back in the Philippines 🇵🇭 my dad brought a can or two of WD40 at our shop and he couldn’t figure it out why it would be consumed rather quickly when there was a public dance 💃 held at our Bario... it turns out that our laborers were using it as a perfume. true story i kid you not!
I'd be willing to bet (not that I'm correct) but spraying WD-40 into the intake may have not been a good idea. I remember my dad getting his Cascadia worked on, they replaced the fuel filter, and the guy didn't know how to "prime" the filter so he sprayed stuff into the intake, truck fired up great but ran like crap for a few days after. Have a safe NYE!!
Maybe someone in the shop unplugged the cord, or did you check before hand ? I always plugged in my diesel pickups in the rare cold weather we have in the Houston area, my apartment had an outside outlet that was utilized mostly for battery charging, but I used it to keep diesel engine warm. 😎
Two things are so wrong... WD40 in intake and cold antifriz in warm engine... Wd can vipe off oil from rings and cilindar wall... Much better solution is warm air in intake...
hi JBG Happy New Year to you and your family....i've see you go there to check on baby blue twice now is it tore up if not why dont they just let you drive it home and you could keep starting it and keep the battery charged.
Depends on where you live as to whether it is permitted by city or town. I cannot take my to my house, you get a big fat ticket ! I drive out to where i park it and start it every day, twice a day if its bitter cold.
lol...this is why (since I'm laid off due to losing our dedicated account) I'm thinking about taking the winter off before I look for a new driving job. Why go through this hassle when I can sit at home?
Trucker316 what state are you in? Do you live in Ohio or West Virginia? If so go to indeed.com and look up Bulk Transit. Fill out application and put me down as I recruited you. They will teach you about pneumatic trailers and you can be home more. We have terminals in Indiana and Kentucky too.
Don't take your support people/family for granted. Some people have to do everything alone.
10 / 4 that cold start get those batteries warm and using WD40 not starting fluid. That’s all I use when starting diesels period. You are the first person on RUclips videos I’ve watched that used WD40 I award you the golden star cold start Diesel award👍👍👍

It’s amazing how the cold makes the simplest of tasks more difficult.
But Blue fired right up didn’t she!!
im sure letting my little truck charge the batteries for 45 min and a squirt of the WD40 also help
It's so cold that the reefer needs to warm up the trailer :D
What a stressful way to start your week John. I'm glad that Baby Blue started for you, after some work, but she started! Enjoyed the video, as always..

I learned a long time ago. Take care of your stuff and your stuff will always take care of you.
My guess is that Babyblue is more than a gallon low on antifreeze in the radiator, probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have a couple of more gallons on reserve just in case.
I'd buy a case
I would have bought 2-3G MINIMUM.
A little safety tip. When connecting jumper cables, always connect the red (positive) first, than the black (negative). When you connect the positive last, as you did, you will get sparking. This sparking is enough to ignite any gases that may be present at a discharged battery.
so it doesn’t spark ⚡️ when red goes first?
@@24juan68 - Correct. If you connect the red to dead, red to good, black to bad black to good it won't spark.
Alex TehGreat You should also connect the cables from the car first, then the truck. At least they were removed correctly
@@lukasahs6064 Wrong. Assuming truck is dead.
1. Red to dead.
2. Red to good.
3. Black to good.
4. Black to bad.
You was having all kinds of bad luck Startin out the new year I hope it gets better for you my friend
Hi JBG i wish you and your family and your subscribes a very happy and prosperous new year
John, you go through a lot to keep that truck running, bet you will be glad when the new one comes!...Happy New Year also..
Yay!! That was pretty cool! Warm that bad boy up now!
Sure is mighty cold out there JBG glad Baby Blue started for you love your videos keep up the great work can't wait for your new truck. Also happy new year!
thanks Eli
my ears and hands are aching just watching this. I had to dig my locked up trailer out of the frozen snow once (3 degrees F). Oh, but when you get it going, it's such a joy.
a pure moment of joy
wow
7:57 the truck was like harder daddy
Lol
Shut up kid
Happy new year JBG and baby blue!! Hope 2018 is a fantastic year for you both!!
I remember this video. The people at the shop plugged her in but never checked to see if the cord actually worked lol
Has your truck been sitting for several days in those temperatures?
Normally an European truck would start in seconds at -13c..Nice video though and interesting to see the job you have of starting trucks in winter over there.

It's American made 😉

You should say please and thank you to your family more often!
Happy New year....it's cold where you live....I hope your boss pay you extra for making this load run..!!!!
more than i ever hoped for
Mr Andre Paden and getting the truck started.
When in doubt.. smack the storage compartment.. if it doesn't open the 1st time.. smack it again!
Great vid man
Edit: love how you kept a cool head through it man.. I would've been swearing at it.. but that has worked in the past for me
Nice weather for a polar bear. It's also cold in Hamilton / Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Nice, glad she started up for ya!
i love his slap trick for the storage compartment lol
Good ol baby blue.Happy New Year JBG
Your Company is lucky to have you, most drivers would have called a service truck out to start a cold truck like that.
I would have done just that
For sure lol

BabeyBlue never gives up...don't want to be replaced ;)
she is really trying
I've never seen WD40 used for starting fluid before. Thats a good trick to know.
I learned from other truckers
@@24juan68 does it get the battery to work and where do u buy from
Cut the bottom off of a plastic pop bottle, they make a great funnel.
A gallon is a lot to add since last stop. Acts like head gasket or much worse going on. Baby Blue needs a doctor.
Yup, she's on her way out.
Can't keep batteries in her, and now she eats coolant.
Top it off she stalls whenever he walks away.
The boss has got a real POS there. Poor Johnny Be Good.
A gallon isn't much on a semi
Hahahahahaha!!! 11 more gallons to go, right? Ol' JBG stops for fuel, and adds a gallon of blend! Keep on truckin. Maybe it will quit??? Yep
worse thing is anti-freeze will eat up those new bearings especially if oil changes get a little infrequent. Good time to get oil samples run and see what is flaking off.
Looks like exhaust in the coolant as well. Probably EGR cooler is bad.
most truckers I know would rather let the engine idle overnight rather than go through the 'fuel consuming' process of getting the engine restarted in the morning.
Hey John hot wire first then ground last. Be safe my friend.
What is the difference?
it s better ground first and hot second because ground it's on all metal body so if you connect first hot and after ground and the wire it's touching any metal you can see some sparks. so he done a good job
WD-40 better than starting fluid, provides lube...Move Baby Blue into the sun and park her.
You have a safe journey in that awful weather; I've seen it on the news here in the UK, and it doesn't look good.
oh boy, miami florida we are coming 😂
It’s AWESOME to hear, “Thank You Lord”, instead of all of the vulgarity we usually hear. Thank You, may God Bless your day
JBG means... Jesus Be the Glory
Google User gross
I too have those days when things don't go right
As cold as it is I wanna see how nice ull be to ur family
I said a PRAYER also for Baby Blue to start.
no wonder she got cranken
Keith Klingensmith yes sir, God is in control of everything.
As slow as Baby Blue was turning over I thought ""No way" --Maybe a little help from above?
I think its time they get you a new truck this one appears to have seen better days.
Equipped with an APU but either it doesnt work or he shut it off. Could have had a nice warm truck and charged batteries when he returned. Glad I'm finally retired from trucking and moved South.

Now the air filter is soaked with wd40
It will vaporize and sucked into the engine
Plus WD-40 is great to take out wasp nests, spray it then use a lighter and flame it!
5:04. My ears are about to fall. I don't miss running the road for this reason. Everyone bitching about the heat this summer needs to watch this
Very beauty full
If the repair shop would have just plugged in the battery charger overnight, it would have saved a lot of work and freezing to death, I'm just saying that's their job.
Running On Empty thinking the same. They created a problem out of something minor.

There are supposed to be jumper connections directly to Baby Blue's starter under the hood. Forget about charging the batteries. Save some time. The owners manual should show you where they are.
i don't think my little truck can handle it

In a perfect world absolutely
Matthew Shires zero excuse for not checking

Good work man
When it's that cold out, keep that APU running at all times(if it's in a safe place to do so unintended)
Man I live in Sydney Australia we are in winter atm and have 13 degrees c and think its cold. Dude I thank god i live in a warm winter.
Did you ever hear that WD40 is also good for sore muscles.
no i have not but when i was a little boy living in an island 🌴 back in the Philippines 🇵🇭 my dad brought a can or two of WD40 at our shop and he couldn’t figure it out why it would be consumed rather quickly when there was a public dance 💃 held at our Bario... it turns out that our laborers were using it as a perfume. true story i kid you not!
My grandpa used for his arthritis, said it works real good for that kind of pain in the joints.
Jacob 🥰💯 Jacob 🥰🥰
Time for fresh batteries and synthetic oil to crank over easier in the bitter cold !!
I sure hope the dog didn't lick on the empty antifreeze container you threw in the car.
b conover samething I thought! That was just crazy to throw that in there where the dog can lick it. The antifreeze smell attracts animals!,
Next time buy a jug of concentrated coolant and a bottle of distilled water and you have 2 gallons of coolant for the price of one 50/50
I'd be willing to bet (not that I'm correct) but spraying WD-40 into the intake may have not been a good idea. David H Bingham I agree! I think the shop people didn't plug it or unplugged it before they went home!
Are you a filipino? My dream is to be like you someday. A truck driver.
Two things are so wrong... WD40 in intake and cold antifriz in warm engine... Wd can vipe off oil from rings and cilindar wall... Much better solution is warm air in intake...
Just curious why you didn't have ur thermoking apu running?
I was instructed not to
Did you spray the WD 40 before or after the air filter? Before would gunk it up I think.
I bet it feels like a ice box in there.
happy new year ...
happy new year
Happy Birthday to Us John !!
thanks
One thing i never ask you John.
How did you ever adapt to cold when you come from warm weather of Philippines?
hi JBG Happy New Year to you and your family....i've see you go there to check on baby blue twice now is it tore up if not why dont they just let you drive it home and you could keep starting it and keep the battery charged.

JBG, you need to take some time and service small things on your truck.
I guess the trick is to pull that.. um, ok. This is your truck, right?
happy newyear
Safe travels
New. Trucking
Haha, was she in the car this whole time?! She wasn't going to get out there in the cold was she? Haha!
Is that a Freightliner Cascadia
Baby blue always comes through
just a little love is all

i use a sortsleepingbag cover up the batterie,,,,it helps.....
what was wrong with just plugging in the extension cord, back in the barn/garage?
Hi VERY GOOD VİDEO 22B
I’ve never seen wd40 used for that before...Thanks for the tip. You at least had jumper cables. Blessings!😃
Someone showed me that too
WD40 is an old trick.
Anything combustible will work. I use gas on a rag or unlite propane torch.
well done babyblue
:) WD40 has lots of uses!
Works on toothaches..
