Hey I'll be a senior in high school and I want to do something with nature and outdoors and I was wondering if I need to have taken specific classes in highschool, and are there many jobs in this career field?
in wildlife biology, there are a lot of jobs, but compared to how many people apply for them, there aren't that many. it is not as wide open as other career fields. so it is definitely competitive. however, you need to pursue your dream career at all costs. if wildlife biology is what you want to do, do it and don't let anything hold you back!
Classes to consider in high school that will help you get a head-start in college include biology, chemistry, physics, writing, and mathematics, especially statistics if your school has any options in that regard. Classes that will help you develop public speaking skills would be very helpful too. Equally important are looking for extracurricular activities and organizations to get involved with. For example, check to see if your school has an active biology club. If there is a nature center nearby, you could look into whether it is possible to volunteer there. There may also be a "Master Naturalist" program where you live, which will provide you with basic ecology and wildlife training. See if any of the biologists, land managers, or game wardens with the state wildlife agency where you live would be willing to visit with you a bit to relate their advice and suggestions for colleges, majors, and general wildlife knowledge. Making connections with people already in the field is well worth the time and effort - if you leave a good impression, they may be able to help you find your first seasonal or summer wildlife job later. Be advised - the science is the easy part. Get good at dealing with other people. Depending on the job you ultimately aim for, handling human relations and human interactions is a very large part of the job.
Thank you. I have an 11th grader who wants to study wildlife. This video gives insights on what she should consider when choosing the right college program. This is a good, honest video.
Hey, I’m about halfway through your video, but I wanted to stop to say how much I love it. Oh snap, didn't know you were in private consulting. That's what I do too! I definitely agree with everything you said. From my experience, networking and good work ethic is more important than any specific degree.
thank you for this amazing video i'm looking into becoming a wildlife biologist and this video had so much useful information and didn't just sugarcoat and glorify wildlife biology.
Went to school for a nursing degree bc my parents said they'd pay and I'll just learn to love it. Ended up hating it, moving out, and paying 1k to just be done with it all.
Thank you for the video, it was very helpful! I'm a sophomore in college majoring in psychology, and its great but I've always loved animals so I'm considering making the switch. I wish I could do both! :(
Hi Mr. Ed, I have considered becoming a wildlife biologist for the past 4 years, but recently, I have been having more and more doubts about it. I love biology, and I love science, but is it really worth it? When taking into account the multiple years of higher education, and the fact that I would most likely be in an office more than I will be outside, I am not sure if this is worth it in the long run. Also, how often are you able to be at your house, because I would still want to raise a family, and have time for them.
I have similar problem. I always love science, whatever it was. Biology, math, physics or chemistry, etc. But all of these things makes me confuse to which career I should choose, I love biology and nature but i also love engineering and physics. So I don't really know what should I pick
@@zahraaa.n.7744 Don't be confused. If it is your passion and what you want to do in life then go after it. I'm 24 and turn 25 soon next year in May and I feel like the journey to become a wildlife biologist will be well worth it despite the years getting a higher education.
@@Alyrricyst good luck with that.. what major would you study in collage? if you get ecology BS is it possible to study animal behavior& evolution postgrad?

This was an excellent video! I currently am a junior in college and I am pursuing my bachelors in biology. I will be going to do my masters after I graduate with my bachelors. I am interested in going into this field as I've always loved animals and have so much field experience already and continuing as we speak with internships and wanted to help with conservation. I will definitely keep your channel in my list to watch because you're very informative about the field itself. Thank you for explaining the types of careers in the field of wildlife biology. I was always interested in doing non profit and hoping to do conservation with them. One big question I always have is what keywords are helpful to type in when looking for a job? Thank you for all this information!
Just letting you know that it’ll be a lot more competitive for you, they’ll be people who get there Masters in Animal Managment/Animal Veterinary who will be able to get into this job a lot easier
Participating in a conservation organization does not typically require Management or Animal Veterinary and does not put you on top of the stack of resumes. Internships, volunteer work, and your education experience are the largest factors, and as long as it’s Biology-related with relevance to the field of conservation through internships and graduate school she’ll be fine.
Hi I loved the video! I’m 26 and have a degree in Marine and Environmental science from the Coast Guard Academy. I want to get out of the military after my commitment in 2 years and want to know if a career in this field would be possible. I love nature, animals, and believe I would love this job.

Since childhood I've wanted to become a biologist or a wildlife biologist to be more specific. Working with animals is basically all I want . I'll graduate next year and I hope to start my biology course in university also next year (in fall). Hi Ed, thank you for sharing the great video! I have a quick question. I'm considering a biology major to eventually become a wildlife conservation scientist first because I want to help nature with my expertise and second because I like biology. I was wondering how exactly the works biologists do could be used to help protecting the nature. I felt like if the job is to collect and analyze the data from the environment, it could be learning new things, but wouldn't be something directly about saving the nature?
I am sorry for replying so late--the research that biologists do on wildlife can save wildlife in many different ways. for example, if an academic is studying the impact of a type of pesticide on the health of a species of fish, and finds that the fish is significantly being impacted, then legislation could change because of that research so that the pesticide is no longer legal, therefore saving the fish. in consulting, for example, research is done often with the sole purpose to see if endangered species are present on a parcel of land that will be developed. if a consultant biologist discovers the presence of that endangered species, then that developer could be restricted from building in that location, saving the individuals of that endangered species from habitat destruction. I think what you are asking though is: does basic science in the context of wild animals always help save that wild animal? the answer is not always directly or presently, but it doesn't mean it isn't worthwhile research or. could not contribute to its conservation in the future. for example, studying the adaptive significance of an extra appendage on species of beetle might not have any direct conservation implications at the time of the research, but it may help form the foundation to understanding the overall natural history of that animal that will be necessary to protect it.

Hello Ed! Thank you for the awesome video! I am struggling if I should go into the career as a wildlife biologist. Really hope that you could give me some advice! I am in the middle of continue working or accepting a master offer from the University of Queensland, which is a animal science in wildlife biology degree. My Bachelor degree is mechanical engineering, this master degree is the only one I found that accept non -related background students. The master degree is really expensive since I am not an Australia citizen, but I know UQ is a really good university! My city have so little jobs related to aniamls/wildlife/conservation, I don't have related bachelor degree, so I am so worried if I could get a job with this academic background in Australia or other countries later. If I couldn't and have to return to my own city, this could be a great trouble and I will be jobless for sure. Also, since I really don't enjoy engineering at all, so I pay so little effort and didn't learn a lot in university (my bad, I wasted my bachelor degree), which makes me not so sure if my engineering degree will be ever useful for my career development in wildlife biologist. The deadline to accept the offer is June, I really need advice if I should go for it. (I just need a lot of courage....I am so afraid of giving up everything I built so far and go into an unknown future) Thank you so much for reading. Have a nice day!

I have a question for you about how quickly you started working on your Master's degree after your Bachelor's. I'm currently working on my Bachelor's in Wildlife Biology, and I'll be a junior in the fall. I know that I will get a Masters at some point soon in my career, but because I've been in school so long I wanted to take some time off after my bachelors to get more work experience. How many years off getting work experience would be reasonable, or would it be better to go straight for the masters. Thank you for all the information
You need to do whatever you feel best, but if you feel like you need some time out of school then I recommend you taking some out of school and get research experience, to recharge for grad school, and also just enjoy life. I took two years off between undergrad and grad school and to get some field experience in the tropics. Not only was this good for my resume but also were memories that I will cherish forever. With time off you can boost your resume to help you get into grad school by gaining more research experience and also maybe have some experiences that you can’t necessarily have when you’re older and have more responsibilities and need more money. I would say take as much time off before grad school as you feel you need, however you should also know that it will be much easier to get a higher paying full time job with benefits with a graduate degree. I’ve known some people who took 10 years off between graduate and undergrad and did field tech positions for little pay but I feel like I would not have liked to been that poor for that long lol
Sabrina O can’t you just go straight to a masters? Here in the uk you do an integrated four year course and straight away get a bachelors after 3 years and then a masters from the last year. So by 22 you’re finished with education unless you want to do a PhD.
yes it is possible! you can probably find some research that incorporates wildlife photography, or also just do wildlife photography on the side of your main job as a biologist, either for fun, or also to earn money!

Thank you for the video, it was very helpful! I'm a sophomore in college majoring in psychology, and its great but I've always loved animals so I'm considering making the switch. I wish I could do both! :(
Hey how's it going? Were you able to switch.

Elijah Weaver it something extra
If someone got there masters to someone who hasn’t, the person with the masters degree will get the job
Hi I loved the video! I’m 26 and have a degree in Marine and Environmental science from the Coast Guard Academy. I want to get out of the military after my commitment in 2 years and want to know if a career in this field would be possible. I love nature, animals, and believe I would love this job.

I wanted that job or zoologist becauae for some reason I am scared of doing the same indoors jobs but I am becoming a nurse so I should probably see how to get rid of my odd phobia.

Where are you studying wildlife biology ?
Thank you! I'm gonna try it out!! Great video as always!👍 Oh and one question, is it possible to be a wildlife biologist and wildlife photographer?
