Bono wrote the lyrics during his first night visiting Côte d'Azur in 1986, while struggling to reconcile his responsibilities as both a married man and a musician
U2 live is awesome. I saw them twice. Once my seat was the last row of the Oakland Coliseum, but U2 personnel switched my ticket and it was 6th row center stage. They said they would give my ticket stub to someone outside who was looking for a ticket. How cool is all that. Thank you U2 for one of the best concert experiences of my life. 😊😊❤❤
@@RockyBobbieBuster LOL, go actually SEE THEM LIVE before you make a stupid comment like this. Much better live in concert than on the recorded tracks.
"Bono told Rolling Stone that 1986 had been "an incredibly bad year" for him, personally, and it was "almost impossible to be married and be in a band on the road." But, he told Jobling, he "didn't want to write about romance because that doesn't interest me as much as the other side." So he embraced what he called "the two-edged sword" of love"
U2 is always amazing live - I disagree with some of the other comments about the studio version - they're both good! I was at this concert, and it's always an amazing and spiritual experience.
I think u got extremely lucky in that this was an extraordinary live version, the problem is that some bands are so great and empathetic that they can transform a performance of a song to fit the mood of an audience of hardcore fans, in the moment on that exact night, and then adjust the performance again, for the same song, the next night....this is what u2 does 1000%...im glad u enjoyed it, i think u would have even more knowing the album version, again, im really glad u got lucky, but this is more for someone who knows the song backwards and forwards and not a first time listener, but it was great...he started the song a little weak, and vulnerable, vocally (all on purpose, bc hes a great singer), but on the album his voice is as present and as arresting as it was on the studio version of their song “One”....in your spare time, just check out the album version, i think youll get this amazing performance even more....and yes, on the album they lyric is “with or without you.......i cant live......with or without you” its super clear on the studio version, but quite muffled here....live versions for any band are hit or miss for newbies, and not always because theyre “bad” versions, but for the above mentioned reasons too.....great reaction, just check out the studio version in ur spare time at some point.....just beware of some live versions.....there are exceptions, some bands are better live and crap on the album, some bands, like u2, are equally great at both, just....different, so, be aware of that, different and tailored for hardcore fans
Hey Bisscute, great reaction! From what I understand, Bono wrote this song when the band had really started to take off with their "Unforgettable Fire" album and their performance at the Live Aid benefit concert in 1985, which was a globally televised event. At that time, he was also faced with these responsibilities of being a husband and father. He wrote this song about these directions life was pulling him and through this song he realized, it wasn't about just being a rock star or just a family man, but the constant tug of war between these aspects of himself. I hope that answers your question.
I was at THIS show! It was incredible. I wasn’t the only one without dry eyes by the end of the song. I’ve been to over 8 U2 concerts, and this was by far my favorite. They are like the anthem to my life.
U2 is one of the Biggest Bands in the World (they've performed live to more people than any group in history). There's a reason for this. They put their Heart and Soul into the music. Love your genuine reaction, it's real and it's fun to watch.
Theyre one of those bands that are so great u could hear the studio version, be blown away, then hear the live version, and be blown away all over again for different reasons.....theyre special like that.
Their performance during the Super Bowl Halftime Show 2002 is definitely worth seeing. Live at the first Super Bowl after 9/11 happened. Their power and sensitivity to what the USA was going through is purely amazing.
U2 is excellent live! Been to a few of their shows over the years. They are always very intimate with the crowd. Not always to this degree, but they certainly make you feel like you are "seen" in the crowd. When you get a chance in your personal time, watch the official video of this so you can hear the studio version. Also, the live Milan shows they did are exceptionally great.
Probably best band I have seen live and that was on Joshua Tree tour back in 1986 - no screens, no flashy distraction, just the band and 80000 plus people singing along to every song on an amazing summer evening at Wembley Stadium
U2 is my favourite band. I saw them on their first UK tour and have seen them six times since down the years in Newcastle, Budapest, Barcelona, London and São Paulo. They are one of the bands I would travel for, and travel far and wide to see. I never tire of them. They never disappoint live. At the moment I'm reading Bono's autobiography, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story. It is touching, funny, and bizarre by turns. Just what I'd expect. Enjoy U2. I envy you. You're discovering them. Depeche Mode is another group I'd venture far to see. The video you posted showed you why. Your father has great taste!
I heard from an interview with Bono that the song was originally a "throw away song" they didn't think they would do much with. Hard to imagine if this song had never been released. Anthem to millions in so many ways.
This is an important song to me. As a young military man when this song first came out, I met a girl at a club, asked her to dance to this song, held her close, sang to her and have been with this girl for almost 34 years. Yes the original recording captures the beautiful sounds but the live version captures the emotion. It’s beautiful, we need more beautiful in this world.
I'm glad you took my advice to listen to this song. This song is about the struggle between the professional and personal life of Bono, the lead singer, and the fame of the band...!!!
When With or Without you was released I played the song day in day out. I was a teenager who found life quite difficult. Falling in love with girls who didn't fall in love with me. This song was my hidden love song I sang for the girls who stayed unreachable. It is still one of my favourite ballads/love songs of all time. Thank you for you reaction and please listen to the studio version as well. ~ Vals
I highly recommend you watch All I Want Is You/Where The Streets Have No Name from U2’s 2001 live performance at Slane Castle. It’s unbelievable. I believe someone else also suggested it in a comment on one of your other U2 reactions.
This song is another gem from their earlier golden era. I think it might be evident, that U2 excels the most at heartfelt, emotional tunes. What an amazingly special moment, to have live and onstage, and so moving. And having a lighter in your hand was a nice touch. Happy to support you and your channel.
My most favourite song of u2. I recommend a few others of theirs. New years day,red hill mining town, till the end of the world, gone and windows in the sky. Great video as always bisscute😢
This Joshua Tree album was so big when it came out. They owned music at that moment. I moved to SoCal a few months later and luckily got a ticket to see them in L.A. at the Coliseum on the day of. So lucky and so thankful...right place, right time.
An unforgettable experience for one concert fan for sure. But what they didn't tell you is how her boyfriend reacted. "Wait, did Bono just kiss her?" then a beat later, "Would he kiss me too?" This was the first live concert video I thought of when you said you wanted to see a live version of a U2 song. The studio version of this song is also excellent.
You're reaction to Creep is why I'm so in love with you. I saw it long before your video and you reacted same as me. He really was a nobody completely convinced he is. To me, he's a beautiful somebody. Just broken. His performance and your reaction made my belly hurt.

Hi Cookie girl! Anjoying with you is a plesure for an eye especially in this suit ☺️ As for the song in 1987 Bono explained that everybody in the group knows what the line "and you give yourself away" means: "It's about how I feel in U2 at times - exposed. I'm not going to do many interviews this year. Because there's a cost to my personal life, and a cost to the group as well." In 2005 Bono called the refrain most important part of the song because it signifies a release of mental tension, "which is when the 'Aah-aah' comes out. That is what giving yourself away is, musically."
Gotta react to the U2 Super Bowl performance "Where the Streets Have No Name". To me it was the best Super Bowl performance of all time. Bono changed the lyrics to fit what had happened in the United States and the performance reached the heart of a nation.
Great reaction. I do feel you should have probably listened to the studio version first, as it’s a special ‘U2 symbolic’ song that takes you through it’s own journey itself. I can’t wait for you to react to “All I want is you + where the streets have no name live slane castle”, though 😏
By far my favorite U2 song. This performance was in my hometown. But even with that bias, I can confidently say it is far from there best performance of this song.

Back to reaction, love your eyes displaying your emotions...bunny jumping....we need to see this...lol Keep up the great reactions and belated Merry Christmas. lol
Whoo! Another U2 song!! So glad you picked a live one, even if his voice isn't actually the greatest in this version :) If you want another, I'd suggest Cry/Electric Co. live from Chicago in '05. Of course, you should check out their Live Aid performance too, specifically the song Bad from '85, it has great crowd interactions too :)
Great reaction to an iconic song and an iconic band. With it coming up to Xmas I think you should react to another of their songs, which even though I don't think it's about Xmas was in the charts around that time as a single, and that is Angel of Harlem. I think you'd love it. Would still love you to find and fact to Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, would love to get your thoughts on it. More U2 though, you can't go that wrong with them. As for this amazing song I just love that guitar lick on this song, as well as the emotions that Bono puts into it. I'm just left in awe every time I see these guys.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed this ❤️
Great reaction to an iconic song and an iconic band.
Bono is so captivating that he almost drew my eyes away from your chest.
... almost
With or without you is from the album "Joshua Tree" - probably their best album
It’s amazing that this song only has 4 chords. I love U2 so much
Bono Vox's enchanting voice matches The Fist's guitar.
Hi Bisscute there’s another great performance from this same concert. Look up Stay (Faraway, So Close). It brings a tear to my eye.
Watch U2 1985 Live Aid performance singing Bad. You will really enjoy it
My most favorite from them
Voice “cracking” was the word you were looking for. 😊
