    Tim must be one of very few people who actually understands how automatic adjusters work. Also he actually tested it and did not throw it together saying they never work.
    It will be interesting what he says about the Fairmont.

    These where sold as Daihatsu cuore in The Netherlands and probably in the rest of mainland’s Europe. Charade was a bigger model. I had several in the past, never had any technical problem or rust. Real value for your money, it’s a real pity Daihatsu left Europe.

    Best advice with slopping handbrakes is to carry out this job instead of what people usually do - tightening the handbrake adjuster nut, which does absolutely nothing apart from stretch your handbrake cable. Self-adjusters are just rubbish, I've seen a few that even after cleaning and lubrication don't want to work for very long!

    Good to see Chems getting some more love! I feel you on the rust....I live over here in Nova Scotia and have a 2009 Hyundai Accent hatchback (which was only sold for a year or two on your side of the pond as the Hyundai Accent Atlantic in the UK - so strangely, a very rare car over there!)
    Mine is at about 218k kms right now and I've owned it since I bought it used with 54k kms on it. I've had it yearly undercoated/rustproofed, but get any SPECK of rust I see developing fixed very quickly, damn the cost because:
    A. I love my little basic Korean ecobox
    and . If I let the rust go, despite the annual rust-proofing, the sheer amount of salt that the Department of Transport puts on the roads and highways here in our Canadian winters would kill the poor thing :(
    Sadly, bodywork is INCREDIBLY expensive here....I've got an appointment booked in early July for a little rust on the front of the rockers and I've been quoted $2600, albeit from a very good shop... :(

    Hubnut as Tim as your go to mechanic you will never go wrong and you bought a good point you have spent a lot of money on the Chararde come and as you said less than a deposit on a new car and Miss Hubnut will be happy with the results of your visit to Tim

    Correctly sorting drum brakes is a somewhat lost art but I personally find it very satisfying when you have it just right, perfect handbrake, firm pedal, no drag. Much better feeling than disc and pad replacement. Or maybe I'm just sad haha

      Perhaps an art that will be returning, as all of VW's EVs now have drum brakes at the rear. A lot less hassle than having discs that go rusty and stale from lack of use.

      Or 2017 kia rio has rear drums, as did our old 2013 fiesta ecoboost.
      Not as " sexy" looking as discs, but I guess for a small car perfectly adequate and a decent handbrake to boot.
      Worse combo for working on was a 1998 saab convertible that had rear discs, but inside the hub there was also a drum brakes just for the handbrake.

      @Retired Bore Norwegian cars have to come in for the equivalent of an MOT every two years. One of the biggest failing points is rusty brake discs, especially at the rear. And that's on FWD ICE cars. On EVs, regardless of RWD or FWD, it's even worse :)

    I've had the same mechanic for close to 30 years, he's very much a Tim type with one exception: unlike Tim who works on your various Daihatsus despite being an MG specialist, my guy specializes on European cars and refuses to work on any US or Asian cars, which is unusual in Canada where the majority of vehicles are either US or Asian brands. He did make an exception by working on both of my daughters Chevy Cavaliers as a favour to me, though I did notice that he always closed his door when doing so.

    Having a mechanic you can rely on is like have a good dentist and a good barber. Lucky for me I like you ian have a great mechanic who's looked after my junk for several years. Great and informative vid. Was that banging in the background some starting another of hubnuts fleet😂 Tim is a great guy to look at the potential dangerous stuff. As for the brake fluid.......when did DOT scrumpy become a thing?

    an earlier version of the Charade sold in the 80s had an advert that said "100mph, 100mpg." there were 2 versions of the car, a petrol turbo and diesel turbo, both 1000cc-ish if my memory serves me right.

    What is it with cars rusting in the UK? I know it rains quite a bit there but i would think you all would have perfected the art of rust proofing on cars there. I have owned quite a few cars since i started driving years ago and I live in a state that they love using tons of rock salt and I have never had a car with rust issues like i see with a lot of UK cars. I hope you get it all sorted as this is Ms. Hubnuts favorite car.

      Not uniquely UK. I've friends in the salt belt of the states and Canada who regularly go rust spotting. We actually repair cars when they rust here. 😉

    These were of course around £6000 brand new so not surprised about the rust level, Jeremy Clarkson actually liked them a lot in the Times review at the time, labelled it "the disposable car". I really wanted one, but not enough leg room for me. Such as shame we don't see more JDM cars and Daihatsu stopped importing.

    I owned an automatic Charade. Great little machine. The engines are virtually bullet proof. Both auto and manual transmission are too.
    Very roomy for a tiny car. Excellent round town. My only gripes is they are hopeless on the open roads. Bouncy and crashy. While there is room in the back for large loads, make sure they are not heavy because the rear suspension will never forgive you

    Since watching RUclips i now understand why when I was a kid and when English made cars being sold in Australia in the 70's and 80's. The seller would always in bold lettering would make sure people knew it was Australian delivered.

    Mine went in the same place for rust, you can adjust the shoes through the little hole behind drums ( rubber gromit ) my gf passed her test in it and I taught her so great car to learn on . WV54RBF, 37 000miles !

      Yes, you can adjust without removing a shoe but Tim was right to get it all apart and working properly again.

    After watching Matt last night with his American white elephant, that American dealer stitched him up good and proper.     Did you ever rust proof the welding from the first MOT? Seem to remember you were going to but not sure as the engine started smoking so bad you took her off the road. Whenever I see one of these cars (which isn't often) I always think of Hubnut!

      No. Never did get the rustproofing done, and the weather has been so grotty we'd not done if after the one this year. Hoping for a dry spell when we have some time.

    Hi Hubnut hope you can get Chemmy back to full health again , Ive got nightmares going on too , my poor old Colt is terminally ill , not only clutch and gearbox bad but the front suspension is knocking thanks to the lovely big potholes we have in England , im sadly now considering the scrapyard in the sky for her and trying to find another Colt , one thats not falling to bits literally lol

    Interesting about the brakes. They should be self-adjusting, but that mean the driver has to make it happen. Reverse at a good clip then hit the brakes hard. You will usually find the pedal comes up while you do it. Calipers always self adjust as they get used.

      Nope. These were so seized they didn't adjust up. The adjuster on the offside was not moving at all.

      Michael Tutty, cars require regular maintenance to keep working as designed. Most fails on old cars are based on lack of needed maintenance. A 20 year old car do actually need a lot more comprehensive maintenance than a 5 year old, because everything on it gets old, worn and in some climates also rusty. The brake fluid draned from this car showed a brake system that had clearly not been correctly serviced for years.

      @@HubNut I remember the self-adjuster on my R16's rear drums involved a threaded rod with a pinion and the rod slipped inside a tube. They had forks that slipped into the shoes.

    It definitely one way of running a car buying it cheap and look after it until it finally gives up we have had a few brand new cars over the years but I think I get more satisfaction from buying a good used one and get rid when the repair bills start get to high hopefully after a lot of years

    Daihatsus don't like winter. That's why I don't drive mine in winter, except when no salt is sprinkled onto the roadway. If it is, I wait until enough rain washes it away. Those rear axles are also prone to rusting through

    The play in the steering rack could just be a plastic insert especially if it's near side costs about £25 for a new one I had to do it on my renault took about 30 mins and about the same in industrial language but better than a new rack. Inbox me if you want any more info good luck

      Could also be a steering rack tensioner. I know that's the case with German cars or cars that use a ZF rack.

    Always good to have the brakes done properly, definitely something that shouldn't ever be bodged or given the "that'll do" treatment, and as for the rust, well, that's just improving the power-to-weight ratio... :P

    A brand spanking new car is nice, till the buyers remorse hits, I've only ever bought one NEW car, never again, the week after I finally paid off my car a tree fell on it, I'm content with used cars, even a engine or transmission replacement (if your luck ran out picking a used car) is still cheaper than a monthly car payment for 4,5,6 YEARS.

    Why do manufacturers persist with rear drum brakes on small cars? Discs are so much simpler and probably less expensive.

      My personal experience based on owning, driving and wrenching cars since the mid 80s, is that rear drums require MUCH less maintenance to keep working perfectly on a daily driver.

      @@grrfy My BMWs have drum sections within the disc for the handbrake, but my father's Mk. IV Zodiac worked directly on the disc. Odd.

    I think you should fit that car with the Tow bar that way you might be able to pull the skin off a rice pudding I know I might be being mean it's pretty good for daihatus sorry using voice type

    1. always wear goggles when probing rust if you wear glasses get some over goggles . 2 also wear gloves when probing rust. Believe me you do not want a flake or splinter of that stuff anywhere in your body. Been there and done it once never again will I feel that kind of pain!

      Like when I'm cutting keys at work, you could do it without goggles/glasses (and when I did it first I only had goggles available which was a pain as they are uncomfortable) but you can feel the bit's of metal coming off the key you're cutting and I never want to get any of the little bit's of metal in my eye, esp. as it creates a bloody lot of them!

      @@BrorAppelsin Yes I've had a metal splinter down a finger nail( I was a mechanical engineer for 26 years for various engineering companies) having your nail lanced with a hot needle to release the poison is another joy. There's lots of small stuff out there that will cause you big pain. Mixing chemicals is another one. Once ignited a brillo pad as I put bleach on it to clean a car part. Chemical reaction and the wire wool heated up like an electric bar fire to produce flames. Also spilt super glue on some cord trousers once had a burning hole like the map in Bonanza .

      Enamel such as on an old fashioned inexpensive cooking pot can chip. When it is chipped on the rim, you don't notice it as you wipe it off in cleaning. You DO notice the enamel entering your tender hand flesh and you will not find it easy to remove. You may have it for years in your hand flesh. Take it from me, use extra care with enamel pots! OUCH for years.

    A Top Tim Tip, as he said "slacken the cable, do the work on the brakes, then ONLY take the slack out of the cable" The handbrake cable is Not for adjusting brakes. Great Video x

      Oh and as a MOT tester there has never been a set number of clicks to a handbrake lever, Ford actually took the first 3 clicks off of their handbrakes as the 4-6 worked better, its all about the pivot point of the levers, thats why we slacken the cable first to keep the drum levers against the stops, also calliper brakes will not self adjust if the levers are off their stops, with callipers fit the pads drive it then set the cable slack.     I do hope she will take her tests in chemny as thats the car she will be using so many pass in new cars & realise that the car they can afford isn't the same. It isn't in a bad condition keep on top of it & itl do many more miles

    And one must understand that a 20 + year old vehicle will eventually rust. That rust is nothing from what I see on the roads of upstate New York, especially locally. They would be crushed in the UK 🇬🇧!

      Ah, you've seen Matt's video of his Crown Victoria......this is just measles......the crown vic has metastases......although looking at that brake fluid I'd say you need 160mg of gentamycin in the reservoir......😂
