I carried almost 10 days worth of food my first section of the trail. I carried way to much water. I worried I didn't have enough alot of the time. I have dropped 20 pounds out of my pack. Almost all of that was in the first month on trail. You will get rid of what you don't need.
They say you pack your fears.
You will realize how little you really need.
Have fun! Be safe! Enjoy it! Support one another and you will have the adventure of a lifetime.

It's going to take some time to get your legs, find a rhythm and a routine. You have to accept that it's going to be a learning process for a while. I would say 8-mile days would be great for a few weeks. Eventually, you will get that stamina in your legs, and you will easily recover each night. I do think you have to get the weight down or you won't have the optimal experience; and it can cause injuries to the knees and feet. The good part is that if you do continue to carry the weight and survive it; you will be strong as hell. When you get to Neel Gap at Mountain Crossings; they can help you with the weight issue. They do a shakedown and offer hikers advice on what to carry.
I think the keys are to smile, accept things for what they are, let negative things pass without judging yourself harshly, etc. I think as adults, we are so critical and hard on ourselves that we become self-defeating, and younger people don't do it to such a degree. It's so important to keep a healthy portion of that inner child as we age. You all seem so even keel, and I think that's the quality that will get you to Mt. Katahdin! I love the videos and attitude. When you laughed about the almonds; it demonstrated that attitude of letting things go that's so important when doing hard things like this.
I think RUclips lets you schedule videos. I know a lot of hikers wait a week or so if they want to post a video every day so they can build up some episodes and put them in the cue. That allows them time when they can't post every day due to poor service. You all seem like such awesome people!

The Benton McKaye trail is a separate trail that runs 300 miles from Springer Mountain to the Smokies. It shares some footage with the A.T. and has several intersections. The evergreen bushes you mentioned are Rhododendrons. Mountain Laurel is similar but has smaller leaves. You will see lots of both on your trek. God Bless you and be safe. Don't overdo it and don't take chances.

Hike and learn is every day on the A.T. for the first 30 or so days. You two will probably need a shakedown at Mountain Crossings, I mean two pounds of walnuts? Somehow that has to lead to a trail name, maybe "Hey, we're the Wallnuttos". All kidding aside, sending good vibes your way, take care, Crackerjack.

Please remember those words on your hike…”a footpath for those who seek fellowship with the wilderness.”
It can’t be just about you…it’s about the trail, trees, wildflowers, and the wildlife. If someone is going to so much as intentionally leave a tiny scrap of paper, they don’t belong here. They don’t get it.

I found when doing daily vlogs it works best to begin with a 5 day delay (this correlates with a likely span of days when you can get to a town and use WI-FI to upload with). Edit your daily videos on trail but don’t upload until you get in town then upload all BUT schedule the release in order so that a video releases each day until you can get to a town for the next set of uploads and scheduled releases. Best wishes on your trek. ~CrazyQuilt

Just found you guys after someone on the FB 2023 AT page recommended following you. Fun fact about the rhododendron leaves; note they are folded down for winter; they will unfold and bloom with beautiful aromatic white flowers late Spring. The rhododendron and mountain laurel are why the AT gets the moniker "green tunnel." I'm catching up on the videos. I love watching people experience the GA section for the first time! You are doing great! Suggestions (Jeff and Maila also learned this the hard way. They are ahead of you... last video has them at mile 231): 1. You can edit the videos on trail at night and/or at a hostel. 2. Wait until you get to a hostel to upload the videos to save your batteries. 3. Upload several videos at a time, but set a release date on them, so it gives the appearance of daily or weekly uploads. 4. You could also combine two or more days in a single video. Appalachian Trail For Parkinsons Disease (mother and daughter SOBO thru hikers that finished in December did that... normally 2 days in a video. They would reply to comments while on trail at stops or at night since replies don't take much battery use). Have the best time of your life. I'm envious of you. I can't do my thru hike until another four years until I permanently retire. Until then, I have to be content with two section hikes a year (Summer then Fall or Winter). Lighten weight: Camel up at water sources as you pass them. Drink a liter and a pinch of little salt (electrolytes and helps avoid cramping - a trick I learned from a Triple Crown hiker in Maryland this past summer) and fill up the water bottles. Eventually, you will learn how far you can go before needing to stop for water. You might be able to cut down to 2 bottles of water. Each liter is 2.2 pounds.

You will be amazed at how the trial disappears. LOL That always caught me off guard. Be sure to look up, down and around. The trail has many drop offs and leap ups. Good luck, Trail legs comes after 300-500 miles. You will be amazed at how strong you get. Take it slow and enjoy the journey! Good Luck!
