- After seeing Chris Marshall’s Lemon Cypress Bonsai, I felt the need to try one myself. 4 dollars and 98 cents later, I got one. It’s covered with sparkles, but they won’t last long.
Love how easy it is to work with a young tree, so many options and bend easy😊
Nice work pruning this tree and repotting it. Fingers crossed for you to get through the winter months.
Thanks Tom. With my electric heater, I can maintain evening temperatures no lower than 48 for most of our winter days. I’m hoping that works, and then plenty of food in spring.
Nice work Steve 👊👊👊👊👊
Thanks Andy. I hate wiring. Especially on fragile young specimens. Seems this tree can be quite lovely like Chris Marshall’s, so now I want one. I know you get it Andy!
Chris is great about supporting his audience and a positive re-enforcement to boot...
Agreed Nate. That’s something I admire in him.
Hey Steve thanks for the plug good luck with your new tree cheers
You're welcome James - thanks for watching!
Love it!
Thanks Unleaded.
Oh man you are tempting me to go take a trip to my local store and find one as well! I need less trees these days not more. 😅 Looks great, Steve! I’m excited to see how this grows over the next few years!
I’m excited to see yours Dave! Thanks.
@ i’m excited to work on the ones I just picked up! I had 4 of them, but ran back into the store for a 5th one based on the forest idea I have. Hopefully I can prune mine up over Christmas vacation (or sooner)!
After watching Chris l went looking for one with no luck.. you did well , thanks again
That’s a shame Nerina. Maybe those trees never made it to your shores this year. What do they sell as tiny supermarket live Christmas trees in your world? Try one of those. Thanks as always!
Been wanting one for a couple of years now. Great video Steve!!!! You’ve re-inspired me!
Thanks Dave. You’ll certainly be able to find one or two to play around with. Hope you are feeling better.
Steve, you are a inspiration. (considers newly acquired lemon cypress on table)
Thanks John. Study those branches. There’s a Bonsai in there if you look hard enough! Cheers
Two years in a row I tried those false cypress they sell as tiny Xmas trees. They look similar but blue foliage .Both times they didn't make it. I like the way this one looks. 5 bucks is a great price
Try again and give your all. When failures come cheap, they hurt less! But imagine what success will feel like!
I think you followed his inspirational video really well Steve. I enjoyed his video as well.
His mature tree is something to behold! Thanks you Xav.
I have not seen these at my Home Depot and that is a good price. Never had success keeping them alive through the winter months with my low light. The need 6 to 8 hours of direct sun in the winter time and a fast draining soil. My light in the basement is low with direct sun of an hour, maybe 2. Hopefully with your set up this tree will grow for you as I do not do supplemental lighting. Only the strongest survive for me.
It will get good natural light in the greenhouse. Your winters are somewhat harsher than ours. Your trees must be plenty strong. Thanks for always watching and commenting.
Great job steve. Its got a great start . now to enjoy watching it grow .
I appreciate the inspiration Chris. I love the look of your mature tree. Does your live outdoors? That would be awesome for me.
Yes mine lives outside all year round here in Ireland
A nice start!
Many thanks Kennet.
Hi Steve, nice episode. Instead of a guy wire do you know if anyone has every tried to hang weights from a branch to pull it down? You could make a loop of wire around the branch and on the other end use fishing weights, metal washers or nuts, anything heavy to pull the branch down. It wouldn't have to be tied to the pot and the weight could be added to or removed over time. Just a thought that came to me while watching your video. Thanks.
Hi Lee. Yes, I do know people who have done that, and it’s one of the scenarios I pondered off camera. I decided against it for this tree because of the way the branches want to react to a pull down. They tend to stay straight and might then protrude from the trunk at 90 degrees. I want a gentle arc out from the trunk. Thanks for watching.
@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai I've done it on portucaria afra and my willow leaf ficus...it works..
For some reason my lemon cypress died. It was fine outside for a month. Then I brought it inside from the harsh cold since it's not hardy in my zone. After another month to month and a half it dried up and died.
I would try again. See if you can keep it growing. Cheapest bonsai experiment in town. I can only hope mine will thrive and I’ll have an awesome imposter tree one day.
I’m diggin where you’re taking this lil’lemon cypress.
If I understand your challenge, I think I have a similar one with one of my rosemary. I just ordered a couple “tie pots” from Stone Lantern. Check them out, might be a solution.
I know the pot you mean. Yes, that could be a good solution for this problem child. Good thought
Tried twice and failed both times in keeping them alive. Good luck to you!
3rd time might be a charm. Thanks Deep.
Did you have your drill in forward and a sharp bit. Just a thought. 👍🇦🇺🦘
Brand new bit, and yes it was forward. It was like trying to drill a diamond!
