I have done a lot of pole building on my farm for like sheds off the side of barns and never underground. I was impressed with the way you burned the bottoms of the polls so they don't rot as opposed to using tar or something else. Learn something everyday! Great vid, the finished project looks banger!
it doesn't really work. in fact this is designed to look good for a video and last maybe a few months. give it a year and that structure will be destroyed and rotten. this was just a show build. there was no proper thought given to drainage, no thought given to the floor, and the wood used for the walls will all shrink as it dries out, so how he built them won't last. I've made log cabin houses, you have to consider the shrinkage of the wood in design, and he gave it zero thought. in fact how he built it will only make it worse when it shrinks. as i said. it's meant to look good on camera but a functional hut? maybe for a season. at most. furthermore, these types of cabins should be perfectly sound to use in tundra if built right, and i doubt what he made would even be remotely warm when it's 40 outside let alone -5... that door is more show then functional as well. just huge sections of the built to lose heat. again this was built for looks not for function or longevity.
@@DavidNicholson101 if you think this dude did this solo then you are the mark for make believe channels like this one. don't get me wrong. there ARE channels and duggout builds on youtube that should last for years. once you see em you'll notice this dude is just making this for youtube not for functionality. there is a young russian who made a dugout (functional one) and you can see the effort he put into it. its a lot more work then this guy did, and the two duggouts are about the same size. there are a pair of canadians who made a dugout about 2x the size of this which should last years as well... i'm not saying you can't make one on youtube for real. i'm saying this one was for show not function, and that in months it would be rotting and breaking down because the guy (and his team) didn't bother to build it right.

I was just in a conversation with someone about that issue. Learning to build and fix things with your hands use to heavily emphasized growing up as kid in the US. Now everyone would rather be a social media influencer.
They do teach building in school. It's usually extended education after a compulsory education. The reason they don't put more emphasis on it is most people would rather by something finished. This is the labor of a restless man from a generation that had more capable people.
@@leelewis5544 it sort of has too if you go by historical analogs. If you go back in history it's cyclical. Things get better or easier and people get complacent, lazy, or spoiled. Chose which ever adjectives you like. All apply in reasonably equal amounts. Because of that, things take a down turn and get harder again and people are forced to adapt and relearn atrophied skills. It's like that saying "hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. good times create weak men and weak men create hard times."
This was actually my question: what happens when and if it rains? I'm sure he used some engineering methods to address it. I'm just curious, what methods did he use?
I believe that's what the tarp is for (5:30 and 10:00), providing insulation from the elements, including rain. Not to mention, the earth itself. Just hope it's a strong tarp that won't deteriorate over time. As far as the front entrance, he's relying on the door (20:50). With weather-stripping providing a tight seal around the frame (as seen in 35:45) I'm assuming, which also helps keep it shut without a latch.
Hey Roman! Love your dugout! It's amazing! All the details are there and you even included adding the finishing touches: curtains, a place for your coat and, of course, the sunroof! AMAZING!
I really enjoyed your hard work and dedication to the details you wanted. I’m 63 and farmed Arabian horses all my life in New Brunswick Canada. I can appreciate what you have accomplished. I built a 48” wood fired pizza oven last summer. We now cook a lot of meals in it and enjoy it very much.
Very sweet dugout! I think it makes a perfect escape to sit and relax, enjoy a cup of tea, read a good book, take a nap, etc. The only thing I would add to make it more comfortable would be a flannel/ wool stuffed "mattress". The flannel or plaid shell keeps with the rustic charm, and a wool stuffed mattress wood make the sleeping platform much more comfortable, and much warmer! (We made them when I went to Girl Scout camp in the Summer. Our cabins were rather rustic, and the bunk beds were slatted platforms similar to what was built in this dugout. They were practical but Not comfortable! Part of our learning experience was to make mattresses, pillows, and quilts. The pillows, and bed toppers were relatively easy to make, the quilting was a much more difficult task for me. [I don't enjoy sewing.] The mattress was basically a larger pillow. We used a wool based flannel plaid fabric sewn inside out on 3 sides, reversed it, stuffed it with wool and cotton batting and then sewed a zipper into the final side and closed the mattress. Some of the girls on the bottom bunks made an inner "core" for their bed toppers out of straw/hay and then covered that with the stuffed wool/cotton batting around the core. I personally found that uncomfortable and itchy. The mattress toppers did make the slat beds much more comfortable. )
My sentiments, exactly! It's the simple things, in life, we forget. This man deserves an award. I'd love to attend any class he's teaching, on woodwork. SERIOUSLY!

Great job!!! You are a true craftsman adding all of those details to an already big project. Burning that wood to make it more warm and colorful was a great tip that I won't forget.
All that work and yet nothing to stop rain from flooding it. The steps will act as a funnel to flood this place since there is no outlet to disperse the water.

Isn’t it common practice to get a permit and licensed contractors to ensure safety measures are had? This isn’t as thought out as it ought be, I see a homemade swamp in the works as I feel this is a non compliance issue. Maybe I’m wrong but I’m also wondering which wears crocs to build and working without gloves seems mighty odd. Maybe I’m being too practical but I’d not exactly trust the durability and quality per se. kudos to him if this talk legal and legit though. I’d take a tour during the day when the rain/thunderstorms were states away 💯😂
1st of all I believe his choice in footwear deserves an honorable mention. Really though the ingenuity and engineering involved with burning the logs is incredible. It must've bin nice digging thru sand, he made it look so easy. The lack of roots, clay, and any tool other than a shovel made me jealous. And tarps! What a great choice, I love how they hold up outdoors. Wow

My son is watching this video, he is 3 years old. He says he will build himself a big house. I promised him that when he grows up I will help him with construction.
Great plan!!! Here are some pointers. Use thick walls for lots of exterior insulation. Use trunking to be able to run additional electric and network cables later on. Don't skimp on the build, skimp on finish if money and time are a factor because some new cabinets or paint is alot better than a house that won't stay warm or costs too much to cool or heat. Do infloor heating. Interior insulation

My first thought while watching this was that this project is a perfect manifestation of the 80/20 theory. That is, you get 80% ready in 20% of the overall project time and then you spend the remaining 80% of your time on the leftover 20% of the work.😁 Awesome work! I truly admire your perseverance!💪

My Grandfather build 3 log cabins in towns of British Columbia. One of those is in North Vancouver BC and was designated a Heritage site. Grandfather was a cowboy and a gold miner. He would often break into story telling and recite poetry, Dan Mages, being one of those stories. Ross Wilson was his name. ❤
Reminds me of a guy named Dick Proenneke who moved to the Alaskan wilderness while in his 50’s. Built his own cabin from scratch, panned gold, lived on his own in Alaska for 30+ years. It takes a different kind of human to do those kinds of things 👍.

What an awesome job this guy did…oh…almost forgot…was very impressed that he went so far as to make his own curtains! Love this vid!
Lovely work. One significant design flaw is rainwater management to the open below ground level stepped entrance. In heavy rain it will certainly flood.
I wonder about that. The video doesn’t address much drainage. I would imagine there was some level of civil engineering done here. He wouldn’t put all that work in without protecting the cabin from water. With his skill sets, he surely understands this.
Wondering about frost heaving too, those walls would push in if it's anywhere cold in the winter. Don't want to critique it too much, but something to consider if copying.
@@nevergiveupnevergivein7655 I don’t know, I’ve seen basements composed out of 100% concrete get flooded. Maybe if a structure is on the highest ground and maybe if it’s also on compressed sand
What are the round rocks on the floor, down under that curtain on the lowerside of the wall?is It to catch food or fire if it came out of the little food cook stove & fall on the floor?
Everything is beautiful - there is a table, there is a bed, there is a fireplace. But if you want to cook something or even boil water for tea or coffee, there is nothing for you to do. So, in my opinion, this dugout is a bit unfinished. And by the way, it's great, and the guy put a lot of work into it. ❤❤❤

It took me longer to change the tire on my electric scooter than it did for Roman to build that awesome cabin. I'm still sulking about the blisters. It's good to know there are people with these skills - and the energy to put them to work. Respect, Roman! If I dug a small hole in my parents' lawn, I'd be breaking about 20 building codes & likely get sued. I live in an apt building, so the only thing I do for the property is walk around the grass.

The detail that no one should overlook is that this house will flood when the snow melts. Another concern is that it can't withstand a potential excess of rain. Houses like this are interesting to build on hillsides, as we can integrate a drainage system. On flat terrain, a whole waterproofing system must be designed; otherwise, we end up literally underwater. I've had these types of difficulties before, so believe me, it's a problem. Be careful!
@@JustMeUpNorth I've seen a lot of this style of dugout, but I'm from Florida where I'm always curious how these would tolerate our frequent rain deluges.
Its looks very nice but I would honestly worry about heavy rains or just rain period. Like one good rain and the water will find its way down the stairs and fill several feet.

I have done a lot of pole building on my farm for like sheds off the side of barns and never underground. I was impressed with the way you burned the bottoms of the polls so they don't rot as opposed to using tar or something else. Learn something everyday! Great vid, the finished project looks banger!
Yeah I doubt termites want to eat that :)
it doesn't really work. in fact this is designed to look good for a video and last maybe a few months. give it a year and that structure will be destroyed and rotten. this was just a show build. there was no proper thought given to drainage, no thought given to the floor, and the wood used for the walls will all shrink as it dries out, so how he built them won't last.
@@arizona_anime_fanThat’s an awful lot of work for just looks.
@@arizona_anime_fan Is shou sugi ban not still used to this very day? Sure, it's an ancient technique, but I recon it must provide something of value if it's been around for a couple of hundred years and still being used, other then just for looks?

This is why I think people should be taught how to build in schools instead of irrelevant classes that are not useful in any workplace.
Then we wouldn’t need the government and there’s no flipping way they’ll let that happen
@ I couldn’t agree more man! Hopefully that will change.
@@leelewis5544 it sort of has too if you go by historical analogs. If you go back in history it's cyclical. Things get better or easier and people get complacent, lazy, or spoiled. I hope it won't flood when it rains! That is a true work of art and it is definitely his oasis!!
He just built a swimming pool.

The mattress toppers did make the slat beds much more comfortable. )
I gotta give you props on your build. Definitely my favorite build I have ever seen. You sir are a master craftsman! Congrats on all your hard work.

😢😢😢
Que triste
Thanks for sharing his story. ❤

That’s awesome , amazing to watch , the sound of the fast hammering reminds of the Benny hill show when he is slapping the old bloke on the head 😂
😂
i do not envy you

This video is a uber hard hit video for people who love to build blanket forts as an adult. I am 42, I haven’t built a blanket fort since I was 24
There is still time.
Cushion fort > blanket fort.
I'm more of a treehouse person
Used to love climbing all the way to the tip top of trees... At least high enough to where you had no clue how to get back down.
I'm 65, but haven't built one since I was 56.
This is by far one of the best constructed shelters that I’ve seen on RUclips, great job on both the build and the video!
Except it can flood....
Hmmm... No, you're not right. It is well done till the first flood. And construction itself most likely will be smashed with ground
He is definitely a gifted craftsmen and the finished protect was beautiful! How does it not turn into a pool when it rains?
This is also what I wonder. Where is the water management?
This dude is amazing. Took him less than 38 minutes to build the whole thing. I know it would take me at least 41 minutes...Juz sayin' y'all. AND from Far North California (forever Merle Haggard country) we say: 🤠 EeYaWhooo

It's called fast hammering technique.

The reason he can do it that fast is he's had some practice from doing it before.

Be careful!
Happened a lot with Anderson shelters in the Second World War.
@@JustMeUpNorth I've seen a lot of this style of dugout, but I'm from Florida where I'm always curious how these would tolerate our frequent rain deluges.
Exactly as soon as it rains the water is coming down those stairs and inside the cabin.
It will allow lots of water in but it will drain through in second as the soil is pure sand. Timber will rot pretty quick though.
Termites?
Its looks very nice but I would honestly worry about heavy rains or just rain period. Like one good rain and the water will find its way down the stairs and fill several feet.
My thoughts exactly. It’s got to be flood prone
@@kevincain6906 what stops the skylight shutter from lifting and slamming back down on the frame in high winds too as i saw no latch device? (unless i missed it)
he did not show any WC/ toilet/ bathing /basin sink /drainage apparatus( including soakaway or septic tanks). if a log cabin is to work long term as a full blown home, getting rid of human waste has to be thoroughly planned out for hygiene and this was not covered as far as i could tell?
Idk if you saw but in the background I counted at least 5 other modern structures.pretty sure at least one of them has vacancy in the septic.@@stevechurch4728
Ground looked very sandy to me. Don't think you'd fill that sand hole with water very easily.

When I was a kid I always dreamed of having an underground little house. Even though I never had one, I always worried about flooding . I am beyond impressed with your work, thank you for sharing.
There will be a flooding problem here too. Look at the steps.
Honestly an AWESOME MASTERPIECE!! Congratulations Sir, you have so much eye for details, you can be very proud of your finished result. I enjoyed watching your video a lot. You are the best!
Rain? Flooding the front door an issue?

The writers tried to. One up with the most ugly plastic shoe they could think of. It came to pass. They also said they over shot by 410 years.
