    Working on this show felt like a dream come true for me. Hiroyuki Sanada was ALWAYS around on set even if he wasn’t acting on camera. He was always coming up to me to give my extra advice on how to respond appropriately etc and I SO appreciate that he did that. It was such a treat to have him with us and ALL the experts he brought into teach the costume dept how to dress us Samurai, the many coaches for the physical gestures, walking etc was extensive and it SHOWS. I believe that it was back then and it looks so amazing. Cosmo was incredible and I was so excited to watch his performance, and Anna was not only amazing in her role, but she was also SO incredible doing her own naginata fight scene. A couple of us had to die in the fight just before she grabs her naginata, and we got to play dead and watch her perform and she absolutely killed it. Such a great experience and dream come true as I said before. So grateful to have been cast as so many different samurai in this

    What imho makes this show stands out is the specificity, specifically in the casting. For once we have a Western made show where Japanese characters are played by Japanese actors. Not Chinese actors or Korean actors, but Japanese actors. Asians are not a monolithic group where we are interchangeable. Very often I get pulled out from the enjoyment of a show/movie when I see an Asian role played by an actor of an Asian heritage that is different from the role eg Korean actors playing Chinese; Chinese actor playing Japanese etc. We are NOT interchangeable. And I am so glad that I finally got to see that level of specificity in a show like Shogun. A++

      In the 1980 mini-series, all the Japanese characters were played by Japanese people, & much of the dialog was in Japanese.so this new version is not entirely ground-breaking. And Yoko Shimada, the actress who played Mariko in the 1980 version, spoke almost no English; she learned all of her dialogue phonetically & she was brilliant, won the Best Actress Emmy. Interestingly, I once worked in an office suite where one of my suite-mates had several young Koreans working for her. One of them made the "they all look alike to me" joke about something, & I made so bold as to ask, "But you can tell the difference between Korean, Japanese, & Chinese, yes?" They all said, Sometimes it's obvious, but not always just by looking, sometimes by mannerisms, but sometimes not at all. I was surprised, I'd assumed it was just us barbarian Westerners who couldn't see the differences. And of course, now with the popularity of revisionist history, we see people playing roles regardless of race but hopefully b/c of their acting talent, which dds a whole new interesting layer to the world of theater.

    I have seen the 1980's Shogun and all episodes out so far for this Shogun series. One reason in my opinion this show has done well is having Hiroyuki as an executive producer. This allowed him to have say on things. He brought people who were knowledgeable of the time period to work on the show. This has a huge impact on the making. Also Hiroyuki himself. I have seen him in a number of pieces and to me he always stood out.

It is also said that christians, when it was safe to do so, dived into the sea to collect bones and they were reburied. I think the Japanese exhumed bones in the 1960's ?? to try to positively identify using DNA and asked for people from Gillingham, Kent, England to come forward and give their DNA! I would need to double check my memory and the outcome of testing.

    Oh, YES !! at last proper intelligent and quality TV. Apart from GOT (the early series) most TV series are just 'CRAP' in all so many ways, especially the emphasis on them being just vehicles for Woke, especially feminism which unlike Ripley in Alien where the story was all important and not the emphasis of women being the lead character, Shogun had an actual 'story line' and was not propaganda, I have read the book over the years three times and often watched the Richard Chamberlain TV Series and Episode One kept very much to the book, so really looking forward to the rest of the series.
    But more and unlike so many western films or TV, this first episode showed so very well the Japanese culture that I personally know quite having studied martial arts and visited Japan twice. It also, especially with the character of Rodrigues, as the book does so very well, explains the culture, mentality and character of the Japanese psyche which is very rare. As such, I REALLY enjoyed watching the first episode, So I am really looking forward even though I know what is going to happen, to watching the rest of the series.
    Also, what I hope, but sadly I doubt will happen, the incredible interest of this Shogun series, i.e. so many RUclips videos and very good reviews will mean it will make a lot of money. This hopefully will persuade the film and TV series making companies to DITCH bloody Woke and return to making again quality films and TV based on the 'story' as oppose the creation of vehicles to promote Woke indoctrination.
    We will see !!!

    Why is the epic beginning with "Erasmus" at the mercy of storms missing? Even the initial hospitality of the barbarians until the lord comes? What a thrill from the 1980's series, but too much of a rush to progress the story with important character events omitted. Other things are missing like the complicated Rodriguez-Blackthorne relationship. Still, I already love the series, but it could have more depth.

    • @ComandoPadentro
      @ComandoPadentro 3 месяца назад +6

      I would've guess because we have another epic storm scene by the end of it. Remenber this is an adaption of the book, not a pageby page replica.
      And how do you know the Rodriguez-Blackthorne complicated relationship is missing? Have you watched the whole show? But even in what we saw in Ep 1 showed that their relationship is going to be complicated.
      I believe the right choice was made evne if the pacing of this particular episode was a little rushed. But most pilot episodes are, there's too much information to convey in very little time.
      I do agree that not showing the initial hospitality was a bit of a shock, but they accelerated the timeline for Yabu to come much quicker and move the plot. I don't mind.
      I'm gonna watch this without the book in the back of my head.
