I’m not a expert on air conditioning but I believe the only reason condensation collects on an ac is because of warm humid air passing over the cold coils from the condenser. So unless there is some sort of passive cooling going on in the earpiece I don’t think the aluminum is the issue. I think it’s just the moisture and heat from your skin and it just has no where to go because of the seal.

The aluminium isn’t what causes condensation by the way. The funds on an ac unit could be any form of metal and still create condensation. The condensation is caused by temperature differences in the air. Much like if it’s freezing outside and warm in your bedroom whilst you sleep you can awake to condensation on the window pane. I’m a refrigeration engineer so has to just clarify is poorly down to the fact that yes metal is cold. Wearing over wear headphones for a period of time will create a warm/hot environment inside and that would more be the cause. Not the metal itself

It’s normal physics. These are made of metal and the detachable ear cup is not making any heat transfer from the skin to the shell hence the temperature difference is creating the condensation. Is it poor engineering? Maybe. Placing some sort or heat transfer in the mesh might help leveling out the temperature.

I can imagine that the temperature difference is now a problem because it's winter. When you go outside with them they could potentially cool down very low in a short amount of time and this would be a much greater force for making water condensate than only the bod temperature.

Xm4 are extremely buggy in the feature department, otherwise they are a steal for the money. I had to send my airpods back for Repairs, I really miss them.
That said most people will not be able to appreciate what makes airpods max worth 2 xm4's to me. So you can safely go for the xm4's. Spsially if your not all in in the apple ECO system like I am.

i was out walking for a long period of time a few weeks ago and was sitting down and just took the ear cushions out (out of curiosity) and discovered an extreme amount of moisture in the cups, much more displayed in the images you showed. I wiped them clean and proceeded to use them as normal. I have an issue with them now that if the headphones are moved ever so slightly, the right speaker completely cuts out and disconnects. I thought this might be an issue with the sensor, but, the entire process of disconnecting, reconnecting and playing the audio once again would dismiss the sensor issue. yes, the headphones still sound great and all other features work as intended but this issue is starting to become a pain and an inconvenience.

Got a pair last month. Had for about two weeks and noticed condensation. Not two days later I heard a loud hiss and noise cancellation died. 5 minutes later and the head phones completely died. Apple still acts like this isn’t happening. Tried returning and they wouldn’t let me return, sent them off to apple today to be fixed. Hope it’s a quick turn around. If it happens again I’m just going to sell for a loss and buy a new pair of nose quite comfort 35 again. Had these for ten years and still work good. Was hoping for an easy ear cup replacement with the apple AirPod maxs. I change the Bose once a year and it’s a hassle.

There’s a lot of “heat being drawn off by the aluminium case” being bandied about here. Is this actually true? I definitely think that the memory foam ear cups trap heat and moisture - without perhaps absorbing it as other headphones do. But go to ifixit - and look at the teardown. The inner case and contact point with the ears is plastic , as is much of the interior. It’s a firm seal and no ventilation surely?

I ordered a set and cancelled the order when all this crap came out. I didn’t cancel them at first, but did so when I realized Apple was going to take its typical stance and not address the issue. I did research on condensation, ear sweat, etc., and I believe this is a manufacturing flaw because of the aluminum outer shell. It is too bad because I think these are probably the coolest looking and probably best tuned headphones on the planet. Let’s see what happens with the second release of these headphones. For now I will stick with Bose, Sennheiser, Shure, and all the other great headphone manufacturers out there.

Yeah I'm here because mine are doing this. I wear them inside my apartment working at my computer. I am in Las Vegas where it's very dry. I am not even wearing mine to work out or any other sweat causing activity. Now they will say "connected" but no audio plays and they don't detect that they're on my head. I've tried rebooting/reseting them like 20 times over the last hour or two. Nothing helped. I removed the ear pads and there's a lot of condensation under them. It's weird. Apple better fix this and not say they "don't cover water damage" or something stupid. My AirPod Pro Maxes have never been around water, sweat or even a humid environment. This is obviously the manufacturer's flaw.
