Martin Rees: Multiverse, Aliens, Black Holes, God, Dark Matter, Big Bang | Hrvoje Kukina Podcast #36

I had a great conversation with Lord Martin Rees. We discussed a wide range of topics, including the significance of multiverse theories, the state of astrophysics today, and what happened before the Big Bang. We also explored questions such as how black holes continue to reshape our understanding of physics, the biggest open questions about dark matter and dark energy, and whether there are an infinite number of universes. Additionally, we talked about what happens when galaxies collide, the chances of human survival, and how close we are to detecting extraterrestrial life-along with what such a discovery would mean for humanity and what aliens might look like.
Our discussion also covered gravitational wave discoveries, our understanding of the cosmos, and the future of space exploration over the next 50 years. We examined existential risks, the possibility of humanity colonizing other planets or star systems, and Elon Musk’s mission to go to Mars. Ethical implications of geoengineering, global risks, and whether human civilization is at risk of destruction were also key topics. We questioned whether we are doing enough to preserve Earth while pursuing space exploration, as well as theories of everything and emerging technologies like AI and gene editing. Finally, we discussed the commercialization of space, the role of private companies like SpaceX, the need for a global governing body to manage technological risks, and both the philosophical and scientific aspects of cosmology, including the concept of God and the universe’s origin.

Relativistic dilation explains dark matter. It's the phenomenon our high school teachers were talking about when they said "mass becomes infinite at the speed of light". This doesn't mean mass increases, it means mass becomes spread throughout spacetime relative to an outside observer. Time dilation is just one aspect of dilation, it's not just time that gets dilated. Even mass that exists at 75% light speed is partially dilated.
It occurs wherever there is an astronomical quantity of mass. This includes the centers of very high mass stars and the overwhelming majority of galaxy centers.
The mass in our own galactic center is dilated. This means that there is no valid XYZ coordinate we can attribute to it, you can't point your finger at something that is smeared through spacetime.
It doesn't occur in galaxies with low mass centers because they do not have enough mass to achieve relativistic velocities. It has been confirmed in 6 ultra diffuse galaxies including NGC 1052-DF2 and DF4 to have no dark matter. In other words they have normal rotation rates.
Mass is a clingy thing thanks to gravity, it makes sense that dilated mass would exist as a halo around galaxies.
