John hates his New Bostin self. He never wanted anyone to have to see the powerhouse he was back then. He wanted to be a friendly guy. He wanted to keep Sera from finding out the truth because he was afraid she'd leave him because he had powers or shed find out about his New Bostin Record.
I find it sad that John is was such a good guy to become exactly what he hates a power drunken and vengeance fueled beast of a man when they call him the shadow king i believe its because he is the shadow of what a true king should be like

The former WAS complacent and played along when she had her realization, along with plausible/ somewhat confirmed lack of social aid and Basic emotional understanding from her, the elites, some teacher's, and the likely usurpation of his prowess to flaunt some over seer's god damned ego, oh and not forget her choosing the worst possible way to try and convince him By siding with the abuser's who started this mess in the first place, What little control she thought she had crumbled when they attacked first, yet she still acted the victim when all he did was follow the dogma to the letter and let him be tortured further!!! As for the latter he poked the sleeping bear, ignored his adviser's warnings, Likely nearly got the only people he has left to care about truly thrown into the system that fails them all, over saw, partook, and engineered MULTIPLE assault's because his pride was wounded by his existence, refused to practice what he preached when he got his ass beaten into the dirt, and threw the blame on john for his own entitled incompetence to do the ONE thing he asked him to do ( albeit rather forcefully), and on that note Sera is not entitled to his trauma when all he gave her was his best, and try to move past the engineered guilt and shame FORCED upon him by a shear twisted system!

If I was John yes I'd want pay back, but if this was real, he would have probably been killed for this. Even just fighting in general is an offense because we don't have advanced medicine and tonics like Unordinary does. Or powers. I believe Claire is innocent. It's the Bullies fault and Keons. But Arlo made him snap back into reality which fucked over Wellston.

He’s definitely not power drunken. Uru Chan made it very clear that he hates his power.
