Eiger - Mittellegi Ridge

- A long held ambition to climb the infamous Eiger in Grindelwald, Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. The classic traverse ascending via the superbly exposed Mittellegi Ridge on the aptly named "Ogre", staying overnight at the magnificent Mittellegi Hut, and descending via the South Ridge. Anyway all constructive feedback or comments welcome and hopefully it will inspire a few folks to climb this superb route or visit this amazing area! :-)
My best friend, Thank you for your hard work in making the video. I enjoyed the good video. Have a happy day.
@koreanature thank you very much for your kind words and I'm delighted you enjoyed my video whilst wishing you a very happy day too! Cheers Dave
Hi David, I did this many years ago with a English guide but only after leaving my camera on the train to Kleine Scheidegg on the way up. so I came back with great satisfaction but no pictures! Watching this video has allowed me to relive those wonderful 2 days I had. For me it had also been a lifetime ambition since watching a 15 year old sherpa lad go up it on Blue Peter when I was a similar age. I must admit to feeling extremely nervous in the wonderfully situated Mittellegi hut the night before but the next day brought great weather and a snow free summit! We stopped at the Mönchsjoch Hut after dropping down the South Ridge like you and did the Monch from there the next day. I had to be persuaded a lot by my guide as I was knackered having not slept well in the hut when I thought I'd be out like a log, effects of altitude I guess. So glad I did though as the ridge to the summit is narrow and most enjoyable. I see you've done a video of that too so next coffee break ...
+ richiangriff thanks a million for taking the time to post your feedback and personal experience on the infamous Ogre via Mittellegi and the South Ridge. It sounds like you had a superb summit day of weather like my climbing buddies and I so I hope my wee video evoked some great memories of a route to remember for ever and a day! A top effort going up the Monch the day after your big ascent too... :-)
Anyway I hope you enjoy some of my other alpine vids on a coffee break including the Monch, Barre des Ecrins, Aiguille Dibona, Salbitschijen and Mont Blanc. I also have lots more climbing vids coming out soon so please feel free to subscribe! :-) Cheers Dave
Remarkable photography, wonderful views, mind-blowing climb. Thanks so much for sharing this. Stunning.
+Richard Neath thanks a million for taking the time to post your kind feedback as it is muchly appreciated! Lots more climbing vids coming out soon so please feel free to subscribe! :-) Cheers Dave
No worries - it was a great video of a fabulous place and, there are too many people on RUclips too quick to criticise rather than say a few words of praise. My knees are too knackered to do anything serious, mountain-wise, now (I live on Skye so get to look at the mountains every day!) but I appreciate what's involved in the climb you did. The exposure looked pretty dreadful to me...Thanks again.
+Richard Neath lucky you I love Skye and of course the Black Cuillin where I was lucky enough to do the full traverse around 10 years ago on my 4th visit. It is not called the Misty Isle for nothing! Anyway thanks again and the exposure on the mittelegi summit ridge was pretty outrageous with giddyfying drops either side... :-) Cheers Dave
Absolute inspirational vid....am training to be an IML @ the moment, hope to lead clients on the Eiger trail one day.....
Many thanks for the positive vibes Stephen and the very best of luck with your IML training. Hopefully you will get to climb the Mittellegi and descend the South Ridge one day to complete the classic traverse of the mighty Ogre! :-) Cheers Dave
Spectacular! Those pictures above the clouds seems celestial/other worldly. I have so much respect/awe for those who can do this. I would faint from fear and fall off mountain walking on that ridge. Omg. I am feeling scared watching on my iPad. Wow. Amazing
Awww thanks a million for your positive vibes Little Star and I'm delighted you enjoyed and felt slightly scared watching my wee video! : -) Cheers Dave
This just popped up in my list. Must have climbed this about 25 years ago - brought back some good memories!
Thanks Goose and I'm glad my wee video evoked some good memories for you! Cheers Dave
@@chdslDave love the fact that you can stick your head over the ridge and look all the way down the north face!
Yep the one-way ticket all the way down to Grindlewald! ;-)
Excelente AGAIN!! Your pictures are so clear! Congratulations
Vicente Carmona Heya Vicente a million thanks for your kind words AGAIN and we had perfect weather for our 2 day Eiger Mittellegi tour! From your Google profile picture I guess you are a climber yourself? Anyway if you have a few minutes you may enjoy my latest Morocco Rock climbing video! :-) Cheers Dave
you have no fear! Amazing! Wonderful.
+Robert Morton ha ha my friends and I had some nerves whilst travelling on the train to the start of the climb due to all the history of the infamous Ogre but once started on the route they all disappeared. Thanks for your kind words and please feel free to subscribe! :-) Cheers Dave
Fantastic video David, especially those sunset shots. Thanks for sharing!
Johann Hey Johann many thanks for the positive feedback and that sunset was pretty amazing! If you have a few spare minutes take a look at my Dibona video as it is more of the same exciting Alpine climbing in an amazing setting! :-) Cheers Dave
Great video, I've shared it with some friends who will no doubt enjoy it as well. Brilliant.
Spectacular, not too much else to add to that..... amazing footage

+J Bradshaw and thank you for the kind words and I hope the video evoked some happy memories! :-) Cheers Dave
Well done. Definitely brought the route to life!
Fantastic Video. Very Inspiring. I will ascend the Eiger via the Mettelligi RIdge one day.
+DBoonful Hi DBoonful a maa-hoosive thanks for taking the time to post some positive words as it means a lot and I'm very glad you enjoyed my wee video! I hope you realise your ambition of climbing the Eiger via Mittellegi and get a great weather window like we had and look out for another few climbing videos of mine coming out in the next month or 2 so watch this space... :-) Cheers Dave
Awesome! I want to summit Eiger after this video! Thank you!
Many thanks for your kind words and I hope you realize your ambition to stand on the summit of the mighty Eiger one day! :-) Cheers Dave

Thank you for your encouragement dave, best regards,stephen.. :-))
Lovely video - and some of the best videos around - fantastic work
Thank you David for the great video. I never thought that I would see up close, the route my grand father, Fritz Steuri, took on September 10, 1921 upon the first ascent of the Eiger via the Mittellegigrat. ( He was one of the 3 guides with Yuko Maki) Living in Hawaii, I visit Grindelwald every year and I am still very connected to the mountains and your video added some pretty strong emotions to my love for the "Gletschertal"
+Chris Steuri Hi Chris, thanks for taking the time to post and it is great to hear from you plus your connection to the Eiger via the Mittellegigrat and your Grandfather Fritz! It was a superb achievement on September 10th 1921 by Samuel Brawand, Fritz Amatter, Yuko Maki and your grandfather to make the first ascent and climb the spectacular and super-exposed Mittellegi for that time. I have also had a look in my copy of "Eiger - The Vertical Arena" by Daniel Anker and there is a great black & white picture of all 4 posing in front of a Wengernalp Railway carriage after their great ascent! Anyway I am delighted you enjoyed my wee video and had a vicarious trip up the infamous Ogre via Mittellegi, so please feel free to share it if any of your friends or family may be interested in having a trip up the iconic Eiger as well! :-)
Cheers and best wishes
Dave
Very good film! nice to watching :)
Very nice video, excellent photography. I just wish it was longer. It must have been a wonderful climb. Congratulations. Well done!

I bet the View was incredible, in camera It's never the same. Congrats!
Hey Jared thanks a million for taking the time to post some nice feedback and the view from the summit was super-amazing! :-) Cheers Dave
Wonderful Video of a sweet looking climb. The exposure at 4:40 in your video was HUGE. I've climbed "rock" since 89 and never (yet) ventured on High like that. You have offered me a way up a world class climb, if I can wrap my head around that exposure. :)
+Scott Royal Heya Scott and a huge thanks for taking the time to post your comments. The Eiger via the Mittellegi is only Alpine graded a modest Difficile for normal, dry conditions so not that hard technically but the route is super-exposed in places so I wish you well in achieving your ambition as it is a great 2 day tour, presuming you stay in the superb Mittellegi Hut. By the way we descended (like most teams) via the very good South Ridge graded at AD! Oh and do feel free to subscribe as I have plenty more climbing vids in the pipeline and another one going live next week... :-)
Cheers and happy climbing
Dave
Looks epic! I desperately want to stay in that hut one day.
The North Face isn't going to happen for me, but maybe, just maybe one day, this may be my way to the top of the Eiger! Fantastic video, thanks for sharing :)

Super film, ridge looks fantastic.
nice job shot and sweet
+elkertan Hi elkertan many thanks for taking the time to post some nice feedback and I really appreciate your appreciation! :-) Cheers Dave
Wow. I've read so much about the North Face, including the rescue of Corti. via the West ridge. The exit is usually the Mittellegi ridge I believe but I hadn't realised how exposed and narrow the ridge is. Bloody hell, it would be easy to make a mistake there having successfully climbed the North Face.
+David Ferguson Hey David thanks for posting some kind feedback and you are right that the normal exit of the North Face are the upper slopes onto the Mittellegi. The Mittellegi summit ridge is super exposed + narrow in places and one slip on this, unless you managed to self arrest very quickly, alas it would be a one-way ticket all the way down the North Face... Cheers Dave
+David Linnett Hi Dave,Thanks, I should have said that the film was amazing and graphically highlighted the exposure of the Mittellegi ridge. Great film.
+David Ferguson I'm glad you enjoyed my wee video and I really appreciate your appreciation! :-) Cheers Dave
Top video, amazing place.
Marvelous video. Looks hairy up there
Cheers Paul muchly appreciated! I don't know about hairy but certainly super-exposed with a lot of air beneath your feet... :-)
Hey Scannerman muchly appreciated and yeah the Mittellegi is one helluva ridge and some! :-)
Hey many thanks Adam and I really appreciate the positive feedback! :-)
Brilliant as usual!!
+WPN - PRZYRODA, TURYSTYKA, WYDARZENIA Warm greetings from a cold day in the UK and thanks a million for posting some positive feedback! Are you mountaineer or alpinist and hope to climb the infamous Eiger one day? :-) Cheers Dave

This is absolutely beautiful....breathtaking! I would love to try climbing, but it's the crevasses that scare the hell out of me....lol.
+blinderII Hey blinderII a big thanks for taking the time to post some kind feedback and crevasses frighten the bejesus out of me too as they are super scary and why alpinists should always rope up if crossing a glacier! Anyway I'm glad you enjoyed my wee video and if you have a spare couple of minutes please have a look at my Salbitschijen vid from last year with the Team Pinkies for some more Alpine shenanigans... :-) Cheers Dave
+David Linnett ....thanks Dave. Seriously, roped or not, I know I couldn't cross a crevasse. I'd be frozen with fear...lol. I couldn't think of a more horrible way to meet my demise....ugh. And thanks for suggesting the Team Pinkies video....just finished watching it, and a few others. Your videos are awesome from every angle....the editing, the amazing footage, the music etc....they all have a great flow to them. There are times when I have to look away for a few seconds (haha), but I really enjoy the sense of peace I feel when I watch them. Keep up the great work, and i'll subscribe and look forward to more of your vids in the future. Thanks! ~Brent
+blinderII Hey Brent and many thanks for all your kind words again as it makes all those long hours of filming and especially editing all worthwhile! Happy Tuesday! :-) Cheers Dave
I know about editing...it's like putting together a multi-leveled puzzle...every second is accounted for. Great work, and you're welcome! :-)
+blinderII Indeed Brent every second counts... :-) Cheers Dave
Awesome work David.
Many thanks James and even though this was filmed about 5 years ago it was an amazing 2 day route and I can still remember it vividly! Especially finally topping out on the Ogre's summit with views to the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc over 50 miles away! And that loooooong descent via the South Ridge to the Monchjoch hut... :-) Cheers Dave
David Linnett sounds brilliant. Am very tempted to give it a go later this year.
Go for it James it is a mega outing. The Bernese Oberland is an amazing place to visit but you obviously need a spell of good, stable weather for the Eiger and to book the Mittellegi Hut well in advance.
On Day 1 take the Jungfrau train to the penultimate station, the Eismeer, go down the obvious tunnel to the Challifirn glacier, hop over the bergschrund and then cross the glacier to the obvious slabby nose of rock where there are about 2 pitches of bolted rock climbing (VS 4c or UIAA V in big boots), which actually constitutes the hardest bit of climbing on the whole tour if you use the fixed ropes on Day 2. Then just follow any of the myriad of loose paths which lead to the hut and this should all take 2 to 3 hours.
On Day 2 the Mittellegi Ridge is not complicated as you follow the ridge and the odd fixed rope all the way to the summit and is graded Difficile for good + dry conditions, but it is super-exposed in places and still a serious Alpine outing. When my mates and I did it a lot of the ridge was verglassed/iced up, meaning we were wearing crampons very early on so it felt a wee bit harder than Difficile IMHO. We descended via the South Ridge (graded AD) which is probably the Voie Normale nowadays (the guides would not go near the West Flank as it is very loose/dangerous most summers) and should not be underestimated, especially crossing the North and South Eigerjochs which have some tricksome climbing. This completes the classic traverse of the infamous Ogre which is an amazing tour but a looooong and tiring day from the Mittellegi Hut to the Monch Hut where we stayed overnight. Especially when you are filming... ;-)
Bon chance!
Dave
David Linnett many thanks for this useful info. I'm thinking of climbing it later this year, so all the info I can get, the better.

Good stuff, Maynard.
Takes me back to the summer of 1988. I climbed the Ridge with the Royal Marine Commandos (ML2 Course)

+Jack Hughes Hey Jack many thanks for taking the time to post some feedback and I can assure you it was anything but a walk in the park dude! :-)

Kein Problem! :-) Dave
I completely understand peaking a summit , but walking that Ridgeline must give you vertigo, coupled with the dizzying heights, must be what it's like in heaven
Thankfully there was no vertigo on the summit ridgeline Kevin! If you fell off to the right of the summit ridge of the Mittellegi it would be a one way ticket all the way down the North Face... :-) Cheers Dave
Wow!
Frank Albert That's what my climbing buddies and I thought! :-)
Yeah, and I'm a climber too but I couldn't do that. No way.
Frank Albert I'm only a climber of very modest abilities but I guess in terms of route choice we all have our levels of comfort! :-) Cheers Dave
Beautiful Climb David. Just wondering why you walked over the cornice on the left instead of staying by the rock crop to the right which is much safer. Anyways thanks for sharing.
+Tom Smith Hi Tom I hope you enjoyed my wee video and thanks for taking the time to post! I presume you are referring to the final summit ridge , which incidentally is thinner than an anorexic After Eight mint in places, but my partners and I kept to the well established "trail" which at least 10 teams had used an hour or 2 before us. This "trail" always had solid ground underneath it and at no time were we walking right out on the edge of a cornice and thus thin air as far as I am aware... :-) Cheers Dave
Cool Thanks and Great climbing.
Hey Wilkie many thanks and I really appreciate your appreciation! :-)
I'd be so terrified.
+ofnarcr That is probably a normal reaction! Although the Ogre is a very beautiful mountain there is a brooding ambience due to all the past well documented history... :-) Cheers Dave
Many thanks ooberonfire I hope you get on the Mittellegi one day with perfect weather like we had! :-)
Beautiful video! Those fat fixed ropes take some of the fun out of it though?
Hi Smith many thanks for your kind words and I guess the 2 or 3 fixed ropes (placed by local guides to assist clients I think) are a bit controversial but they did not spoil my enjoyment of a great day by any means! My Spanish buddy tried not to use the ropes, but I would be lying if I said I did not pull on them once or twice during my ascent... ;-)
Cheers
Dave
super cool
Many thanks matycee! Cheers Dave
Hey David. It's been a year since I last saw this video and it still gets me. Excellent climb & views. By the way, whats the song playing in the video?
+Scott L. Royal Hey Scott thanks for taking the time to post your kind words again and the music is called Contemplate by C.Ashmore/B.Marks! :-) Cheers Dave
Thanks for the info about the song, super appreciated. :)
No worries Scott and I hope you climb the Mittellegi one day if you have not already! :-) Cheers Dave
Very nicely done, and congratulations for making the summit safely.
Question: is there an easier way to climb to the summit? Just curious...
Thanks for sharing this great video.
Ken Brenner Heya Ken and a big thanks for your positive feedback and kind words! The Mittellegi Ridge gets an Alpine grade of Difficile but the easiest tour is the West Flank + West Ridge which is graded AD or Assez Difficile. However most of the guided parties when we climbed the Mittellegi Ridge, did not go near the West Flank but chose the South Ridge (also AD but longer and our choice of descent to complete the classic traverse) instead. I think the South Ridge, accessed from the Monch Hut is now considered the Voie Normale on the Eiger nowadays so good luck if you ever decide to visit and climb this amazing + iconic mountain! :-) Cheers Dave
Cheers brasso7 and thanks for the kind words +share! Please feel free to subscribe as I have another BE Production coming out real soon... :-)
That's a really really nice video! How tough are the rock sections? It seems like a few longer stretches of steep rock.
Thanks a million Cragcloud for your kind words as it is muchly appreciated! The hardest section on Day 2 has a big fixed rope placed by the local guides for their clients. Ironically the hardest bit of climbing if you do use this rope (like I did!) is on Day 1 getting to the hut where you leave the Challifirn glacier for the obvious slabby nose of rock where there are about 2 pitches of bolted rock climbing at VS 4c or UIAA V in big boots. For a more detailed description of the whole tour refer to my response to James Wright below. Hope this helps! :-) Dave
Oh dear, we climbed the rotten buttress straight up to the hut, found a peg! I remember a couple of German lads popping up half an hour later looking spaced, I had the peg in my pocket, we soloed it, I was immortal at 22 in 88.....
Ha we all felt immortal at 22! Cheers Dave
Good to see average climbers footage instead of always having to watch the super human types!
Ha it does not get much more average than me Doug! Cheers Dave
Beautiful video!! I love Switzerland! All going well i will be there again next year and really want to check out the Eiger. How much training would you say is needed to get into shape for a climb like that?
Thanks a million Spacegoat and glad you enjoyed my video! A bit difficult to quantify but any training will obviously help in terms of fitness. For the classic traverse which my mates and I did, via Mittellegi (D) and descending via the South Ridge (AD and probably longer than the ascent!) ), I would say you need to be climbing around VS/Very Severe (the crux pitch is about VS in big boots!), used to long mountain days in the UK hills and to have a competent alpine climbing partner who you trust and can move efficiently with. Hope this helps and good luck! :-) Cheers Dave
Thanks David! Time to get into shape. Not a lot of alpine country in Australia, haha. But i'll see what i can do!
Hey Nigel muchos gracias! Good luck with your ambition and if you ever head out to the Oberland let me know as I have some info you will probably find useful! :-)
Cheers Benjamin, many thanks for the positive feedback and please feel free to subscribe as there are lots more Bald Eagle filming projects in the pipeline! :-)
Hey Sylwia many thanks for the feedback and if you get a spare few minutes have a look at my latest called "The Mönch Sanction". This was the tour we did just before the Eiger with a beautifully exposed summit ridge and great views of the Bernese Oberland! :-)
i would crawl on my knees like a little girl along that ledge...
4:38
...yep kaizer the summit ridge was super-exposed and I thought about crawling! :-)
David Linnett well you would still be a braver man than most if you had... trust me lol
Cheers dude and feel free to suscribe as lots of climbing video projects lined up for the year! :-)
Well done. Great photography. It would've been better if there'd been audio, and none of that music. I found the music distracting so had to watch with the speakers off.
+Rosie Fay many thanks and sorry you found the music distracting but I'm glad you liked the footage! :-) Cheers Dave
Great feat.. I would love to be able to climb peaks.. especially ones that have a lot of history on them.. alas,, i do not have the funds , no am i in shape to.. i would like to climb one tho before i die... i wouldn't climb it to die i would climb it to live!~
lowes cell Hi lowes cell and a huge thanks for the nice feedback and why not make 2015 your year to climb a modest straightforward peak rather than the Eiger? To adapt a well known Maurice Herzog quote " There are other Eigers in the lives of men"! :-) Cheers Dave
wow
Thanks! :-)
ottimo
Grazie! :-)
amazing...how did u guys get down?
+dave lastman Hi Dave and thanks for posting! Hope this helps!
Cheers Dave
This makes me feel sick watching this...I love walking however not in a million years could i ever do something like this! Respect!
Is this the easiest way up?
Hi there Adidas Lover and thanks for your kind words! There are 2 easier routes than the Mittellegi Ridge up the infamous Eiger. You have the West Flank which is the easiest way (graded PD) but very loose and difficult to follow so the local guides rarely take their clients this way. Nowadays the voie normale graded at AD is the long South Ridge, accessed from the Monchjochutte which is the way my buddies and I descended from the summit! :-) Cheers Dave
MrUhwoody why thank you kind sir! :-) Cheers Dave
Amazing video, thanks for sharing.
I've been to the bottom of the Eiger twice...and having recently started climbing i'd love to work up the experience (courage) to do this route :)
How did you find the climb in terms of difficulty?
How did you decent? Via the same route?
jusmeig Heya jusmeig and a big thanks for taking the time to post some positive feedback! The Mittellegi Ridge is not complicated as you follow the ridge + the odd fixed rope all the way to the summit and is graded Difficile for good + dry conditions, but it is super-exposed in places and still a serious Alpine outing. Anyway if you enjoyed this video check out my Dibona movie for more of the same and another Bald Eagle video coming out soon so watch this space! :-) Cheers Dave
David Linnett Sounds excellent. I'm subscribed, keep em coming :)
beautiful video ! it is one of my dreams to climb the Eiger, i would like to ask what level climbers are you as it looks like a difficult climb for a beginner line me.
+Louie Inwood Thanks a million for your kind words Louie and the Mittellegi Ridge has an alpine grade of Difficile and the loooong South Ridge descent is Assez Difficile. Whilst my buddies and I are climbers of modest abilities, we have quite a few years of experience and this route is not to be underestimated. I would recommend getting a few years of experience in rock climbing in the UK and a couple of summer trips to the Alps before contemplating this route with either an experienced friend or consider hiring a guide. Good luck and I hope you realise your dream! :-) Cheers Dave
thanks very much David, i'll keep on training then !
Awesome, what high summits did you climb in Europe?
Thanks a million KjellDG and I've climbed a few of the classic 4000M Alpine peaks over the years. Some of the most memorable would have to include Mont Blanc, Dent du Geant, Aiguille de Rochefort, Barres des Ecrins, Zinalrothorn and the Rimpfischhorn. However there are many superb tours to be enjoyed on summits under 4000M and some of the best days I have ever had out would have to include the Piz Badile, Aiguille Dibona, Salbitschijen and of course the mighty Eiger! Happy climbing! :-) Cheers Dave
@@chdslDave
Very nice, thanks for your reply!
Cheers Pom shame about the climber who kept appearing in the yellow helmet and super-fly sunnies... ;-)
Why have you climbed on ice and snow with bare hands (there was one pitch in the middle)?
That was my partner Paulo not me. He wanted to climb the route free and not use the in-situ fixed rope placed by the local guides... Cheers Dave
2:45 !!!
Not a bad view!
Would anyone say this is a harder climb than Mt Everest even. At least I know the North Face would be.
+ Fender Mustango it is almost impossible to compare routes on Everest with the Eiger in terms of difficulty due to the disparity in altitude, commitment and weather patterns for example. I believe most of the tricky sections on the South Col route on Everest are normally fixed with ropes, thus requiring a lot of jumaring, so I guess not technically that difficult. However this is not to dismiss this route with all its associated dangers of the infamous Khumbu icefall, extreme altitude and dealing with the boredom of a couple months spent at Everest basecamp! However the classic 1938 North Face route on the Eiger which has an alpine grade of ED2 is technically a few grades harder than the Mittellegi/South Ridge traverse which is graded Difficile... :-) Cheers Dave
Gadverdamme hebben die mensen geen hoogtevrees?
Hi bikeamour my friends and I are afraid of many things but thankfully not heights or exposure! :-) Cheers Dave
How did you survive despite not wearing oxygen masks?
Hi Anxiousic my 2 partners and I had an intensive and long 8 week acclimitisation programme, similar to those who attempt Everest, so that we could survive such giddy heights without Oxygen. It was touch and go for a while, but we all survived with only the loss of a few brain cells and a bit of short term amnesia... :-) Cheers Dave
@@chdslDave I see! Must have been hard, thanks for the reply! Always wondered how people manage to that. :)
once this is in your blood good luck.........................
+feigned concerns Why thank you I think! :-) Cheers Dave
