  • Here's a glimpse of my time spent during a 2-week arts residency at the McCanna Farm in North Dakota. I took photos in the area as double-exposure images to create a new body of work. I focused on experiencing nature in many layers and showing the different views at once. The screened porch was converted to my temporary studio where I printed the images on tissue paper as collage and combined them with Encaustic (beeswax) paint. I appreciate the balance of the transparency of the wax with the graphic quality of the photograph.
I am grateful to the North Dakota Museum of Art that facilitates this unique opportunity for artists to create in the open horizon which is conducive to creativity and an artistic shift. This is a home-coming of sorts since I am from Bismarck, North Dakota and the residency allowed me to rediscover the beauty of my home state. This retreat consists of a 1920’s farmhouse and large outlying steel building in the midst of the thriving farmland of the Red River Valley of Eastern North Dakota.
