This game is not for everyone. But for the people who want a robust and deeply themed Aliens squad based game, it has the potential to be a grail game. A lot to like here, but definitely not the most casual gamer friendly game i've played.
Solo, my main issue is every member of the squad has cards and equipment and its a bit of pain in the ass to keep track of it all. Much better with 2 or 3 other players
I also forgot to mention this game has a strong connection to Aotearoa. The designer lives here and GF9 is owned by kiwis. My bad, should have had the NZ gaming intro on the vid.
Omg! As a kiwi myself & a aliens fan this is epic! Also thanks for the 3 minute breakdown, not long got the game & all expansions, & now learning how to play it
Tried this on TTS last night with a buddy. We literally lost the game to the "Game over, man!" Hazard card because the endurance deck was so low. Really fun game imo
Jesus christ buy some gorilla glue, its useful for fixing all kinds of things, and making much more, plus you can glue your flipping models together potentially, all for the price of having used some glue that you really should already have. Besides its fun.
Nice review! The game is not super complex but hard to win the story mode. The combat system is really interesting but I agree having the expansion is giving extra flavor
Really wish they hadn't made the miniatures "assembly required". Either sell the game with them assembled, or add some standees so you can play the game straight away.
@@3MBG I have that one, Ebay and marketplaces are asking $250-500 NZD for it now :( Another good game that is somewhat similar is Nemesis (still $200 NZD though lol)
Have not played Bug hunt sorry. But from what i can gather, this is far more immersive and deep than bug hunt. Which is a bit of a dice chucker. This one also has a bug hunt mode
Brilliantly created review vid; absolutely love the theme of the channel! I literally just subscribed because of this video, thanks! I do wish you could’ve squeezed in a tiny review of solo mode given *I* am that guy(loser) who would be playing this game in solo mode 99.9% of he time. So, yeah, lol - How is solo mode? Would it actually be worth the purchase if that’s the only way it’s going to be played? What about replay value in solo? Thanks again, keep up the excellent work.
Solo is fundamentally multi-hand co-op. I played with 3 active characters solo in my playthough, its a lot to manage, but ok if you are used to say 2 handing gloomhaven
literally the deciding factor for me. I tried doing the whole cutting and gluing thing with Warhammer 40k, got 2.5 miniatures in and went "nope, I'm not doing this" and gave it to a friend.
I was able to get my hands on the core box, but hunting down the expansions was TOUGH. I found both copies after doing like a page 8 google search and had to pay a premium on the shipping cost... but it'll be worth it (least that's what I'll say to myself tonight when I rock myself to sleep lol)
My gaming friend and I are finishing JOTL and wondering what to get next. He’s a huge aliens fan and was thinking this or nemesis. I sent this to him to help him decide!
@@3MBG I've not yet seen it for sale in NZ. I'm tempted to pick it up as I've been playing Under Falling Skies and having a blast with that. A lot of people in the Solo Gamers FB group have said they prefer Warp's Edge.
Does one need to have played other RPG board games to be able to fully appreciate the complexity of this game? I bought this last year and have yet to play it, having only recently finished assembling the miniatures, but I've never played an RPG board game before. I watched a few videos of Space Crusade, and it seems far less convoluted than Glorious Day in the Corps.
Its definitely a much more involved board game than the likes of Space Crusade. And if you are getting into the hobby, it would be a pretty big step and even for someone like me who does this for a living, this game has some tricky rules and things to manage.
It's like they took Death Angel and made it bigger and more faffy. This game just makes me think they should reprint Space Hulk more frequently and in greater quantity lol
@@3MBG Absolutely. EDIT: Here's a thing that's been going through my mind, since your sci-fi COIN game is a thing... AvP, W40K, and Warhammer Fantasy, licensed COIN games.
Back in the day Abslom, GW did some hex and counter games they were not too bad. Not quite COIN but very much in that old school SSI/AH style. Battle for Armagaddeon and Horus Heresy were both solid fun. The versions from about 1998 i think
@@3MBG I remember them well (Just like I remember the summer of 1987, when GW lost their f*cking minds, stopped selling video games, stopped selling other publishers' products, had a massive clearance sale, and started using dirty tactics to wipe out anyone they considered a rival... oh, and when White Dwarf turnedd into a miniatures catalogue)
i love this game... caus i love the movie... i agree it got it´s flaws and you can find a lot of fan made variants and house rules to adjust it to your taste. :). besides... i love your reviews :)
Great review Jarrod! While I think Aliens is the greatest movie sequel ever made, I'd rather play Gloomhaven if I'm looking to play a tactical combat co-op. Thanks!
I’ve been very on the fence about this and would appreciate an unbiased opinion on wether you would grab this game now having already played the campaign through once to play again with same person. I have legendary which is good. I have nemesis which is almost impossible to win. Seen it done once by wife and that was a disappointment game only based on the fact that it is almost impossible so we never play it. I’m a huge fan of aliens theme. But this game looks so slow and not replayable I want to like it.
The bug hunt mode is an arcade mode within the game, that should be pretty replayable. I'd play it again, as i did the campaign solo. But the game is quite a heavy weight, and probably harder to win than Nemesis
The thing with the campaign, is you dont get many cards back from the discard between missions. Managing that deck is essential. And once it starts getting short, the bad hazard cards come more often. It's a pretty clever way to show squad morale breaking down
I think is a nice game for 50$ and quite challenging... But is like the movie and you feel the alien everywhere! The expansion are a must if you are in alien movie
I've played Nemesis, Legendary and AGDC loads, and I've found this to be the easiest coop of the three. If you "hack" the game and play 3+ heroes it becomes quite simple. I think there should be a modification of the card draws for 3+ players to make it more difficult at those player counts.
I can imagine playing this with someone and they get bored or confused or start checking their phone. I'd love to see a girl play this and do the entire thing without looking at her phone once
Someone's gender has zero impact on their ability to focus. My partner and i play games of this complexity or higher all the time. I can see a lot of people who don't focus or are addicted to their phone have issues with complex games however, that normally means they aren't into it and you should probably be doing something else instead.

Man, for some reason I want something like this but with starship troopers
Do want!!
HELL FUCKIN YEAH
A starship troopers miniatures RPG would be amazing

Ooof, that's both awesome and tragic.
I really love your reviews!! Especially in this format
The miniatures in this are *glorious*, and are worth the price of entry alone IMHO.
They are pretty damned good
Too bad you have to glue them all together. And they are too small !!
They are atrocious to assemble. No excuse for having to glue in 2023

ive had a fan send me some awesome 3d printed alien heads and turrets ect.... first time i have been sent anything by a fan... they are awesome!
Amazing
Download the aliens soundtrack and play it in the background when you play.

Alternate standees could have worked for sure for the marines (aliens can just be the alien tokens)
Thank you
Have a move of 6.. lol so basicly a dig at genestealers ripping them off in the first place ..
Ha! That is an excellent catch. Classic space hulk reference :)
Looks fun, I'm not sure I'd recommend Space Hulk as an alternative though lol, there is a $170 difference AT LEAST due to Space Hulk being OOP
I got my copy of space hulk in 1990, i have no idea what it costs now.
Oh, and again in 2008 i think, but that was the fancy one

Nemesis is the better game.
Yeah, sorry for not replying, got distracted. Nemesis is better

Space Hulk…lol, like that game is available anywhere :)

I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit...
It's the only way to be sure.
Also my rule for cleaning the house :)
For a simpler game try Space Cadets: Away Missions
