They were airing this in reruns on local Honolulu stations all the way up to the early 80s. I remember because my mom was always telling me stories of how I would run around our apartment as a toddler screaming "Kikaider! Zero! One!" I'm told I used to watch reruns of Rainbowman a lot too. lol
I flipping love watching these old school series for the practical effects. Nowadays it's easy to use CGI to do special effects for transformation sequences or combat effects, but the cleverness and ingenuity for some of these techniques is amazing, especially for stuff during the time it was made. If you pause at the start of 9:44 you can see one of the explosives they used for the fight was on a wire before it was set off, but the explosion and the smoke was fast enough to hide it from the audience. Remember, this was during the 70s, a time that footage couldn't be very easily scrutinized for those kinds of details: most of the time, you would only ever see that episode the one time, maybe more than that if you were lucky enough to afford a VCR AND cassette tapes to record stuff at the time. Bottom line, the fact they even thought of doing something like that in the 70s, let alone for a split-second mid-air shot, is brilliant.
As a 3rd grader navy brat in Hawaii in 1973 I’ll swear that Kikaider, kikaider 01, Kamen Rider, and Zaboga, developed my speed reading and reading retention abilities, because you had to read the episodes while you acted them out with your friends at the same time…. NOBODY wanted to be Rainbow Man lmao

Fun little show. Actually very imaginative without taking itself TOO seriously. That's a problem I have with a lot of the American superhero comics and movies lately. Very good designs. You can tell it's from the 1970s but that's not a bad thing in this case. I skipped the anime when Bandai brought it over and it's long out of print. Too bad because there is something of a Tokusatsu renaissance going on in the US. The fandom is still not that big but people have money (or will find it) if you offer something with value to them.

Watched as a kid in Hawaii also. True none of us understood the plot of the shows at all but we all wanted to be Kikaida.
