Hi Fil, I'm excited to tell someone, SO I just bought my first guitar today and took my first lesson at age 61!! I'm a lefty, so I had to order my Taylor GS Mini online. I was a professional drummer for over 40 years, but tinnitus got the best of me about nine years. I've had such a VOID inside me for the last 9 years. Well today I feel like a big kid again!! I I've been listening to guitar players my whole life of course being in bands, but also through all walks of life. So, today I became a "guitarist"! I am thankful to God for a second chance at having music fill my heart and soul again. Sorry to ramble, but I had to share this news with you and all the guitarists who will welcome me into the wonderful World of Guitar playing! 🎸 Peace to all my new brothers & sisters! ✌🏼 Can you tell I'm excited, lol!

I'm from Indonesia, and I'm proud of one of the legendary rock and roll bands the original tielman brothers from Indonesia, I remember my dad playing the song almost every day .. every time I hear the song I miss the father who is far there...... I love tielman brothers

When I found out about the Tielman Brothers, when searching for rock bands from parts of the world which remained unknown to many Americans - well, I came to the same impression you did, plus, until then, I thought I was the only person to drum a guitar - they were great
What a performance!!! Their leg movement reminded me of Elvis. Such energy!! A great job pointing out their technical ability, Fil, and increasing my musical knowledge!!! You never disappoint ; )
Crazy, man, crazy! Those Indonesian boys could sure rock! Never heard of them or the Indo Rock scene -- my loss. Great to have you back in the real time analysis saddle again.
Absolutely incredible to watch & listen to these guys playing their instruments. You don't know where to look next. I'll be watching this again. Thank you & kind regards from Adelaide, South Australia.
Also, you're right about technical ability v. showmanship. When I see a band live - especially a rock and roll band - I will take showmanship and energy over technical ability every time. But the great thing about these guys was that they totally had technical ability, but were prepared to let it take second place to showmanship if necessary. :-)
Yet another group I have never seen. Such showmanship mixed with great musicianship as well. I love it and I love discovering new to me acts. You are the best Fil.
So glad you talked about that drum solo! I was watching it and saying “Drum solos usually bore me, but this guy is incredible!” Like you said, it was easy to tap along to and circling the drum kit was a great trick, but I just the loved the fun he was having and the little shoulder shimmy he was doing during the first part of the solo. Great job as usual, Fil.
Well, Fil, I was going to suggest that you do an analysis video on these guys, but as always you are one step ahead, ha ha! One can imagine thousands of kids - many future rock stars among them - watching this performance on the telly back in 1960 and thinking to themselves, "Now _that's_ what I want to do when I grow up.". Real, genuine high-energy rock and roll. There's nothing else like it!
Thank you for opening my eyes and ears to this dynamic band!!!! Never heard of them, now I'm downloading anything I can get. These guys tore it up! Excellent pull!
Fil ! Fil ! Fil ! You have dug up something that anyone who has ever listened to rocknroll should see and hear ! Thanks so much for this one! What great energy those fellas had and your analysis was so good!!
So glad you got to react to this video! These guys are great! Talk about showmanship, Bill Haleys band the comets were masters with that too. Playing the upright while upside down and laying down. They had quite a few great tricks too. Lots of bands actually did that back in the 50s! A great modern day example is the spoony boys out of France. The guy once jumped off stage and ran around the room while playing an upright bass with a wireless plugin. It was quite a sight in Vegas at 3am!
Excellent video mate, very interesting trivia as well which a lot of people might not be aware of. Very well done! Being mixed dutch/indonesian, I pretty much grew up hearing this music from my dad and it's good to see it getting some recognition abroad.
Well, you’ve done it again Fil - how can I have lived 65 years and never heard of this band of brothers.?Given the times, these guys were amazing . Amazing musicians and showmen. I’ve gotta believe these guys had a strong influence on Hendrix and many other instrument contortionists. 4 thumbs up 👍 👍👍👍
They played in Hamburg nightclubs where the Beatles came to see them. George Harrison talks about 'Andy the Indian' in an interview. They were the first European band to play Gibson Les Paul guitars thanks to a fire in the Brussels world expo pavillion that burned their guitars, a related businessman then got them these Gibsons.
Theo you hit the nail Bruddah --true story , because I know The Tielman Brothers ~ since I met them at EXPO 1958 - I used to work & know ALL the Hawaiian Hula Dancers at the Hawaiian Village -used to work there at that time.
These guys were so, so good. Without Indorock the Netherlands may have still had a rock 'n' roll scene starting in the late 50s, early 60s, but it would never have been so unique and cool as this.
Thanks for this! There are some benefits to having a colonial past as a country; these guys would never have been considered Dutch without it. I'm proud of them!
These guys were resident in Hamburg for long periods of time. George Harrison rated "Indo Andy" as the best in town. The guys from The Monks (check 'em if you want some serious insanity!) and The Remo Four (look up their Peter Gunn or Rock Candy clips) used to run and see these guys whenever they had a break. Later in the '60s they ran stereo guitar rigs on stage; the guitarist of The Monks told me it was the best live sound he ever heard, while not terribly loud either. Ten Years After did time in Hamburg during their early days as The Jaybirds; you can bet Alvin Lee got his drum stick shtick from Andy!
I saw this video a couple days ago and sent you the link. I didn't know if you would think it was too low energy, but you put some life into it. LOL. Your comment was classic, the guitar player is standing on the double bass and playing behind his back, as you do. I found myself on the floor laughing and rolling around, as you do with your videos. But what was also impressive was his dismount without missing a beat. Neither he nor the bassist. Thanks for the insight into their career, you really do a good job with these videos. I had a roommate from Malaysia in my University days, and they played a Southeast Asian sport called Sepak Takraw. It is like volleyball with a small hard bamboo ball, and they played it with their feet. I played soccer (it's like your football but there is no money in it so it stinks less) and I am built like Southeastern Asians so I started playing with them. The net is 1.5 meters high, the best players can reach over the net with their legs to spike it down, without touching the net. I am sure these brothers played the game since you made the comment about their legs.
Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry put on quite a show also. I had never heard of these guy before. Thanks Fil . Always bringing new bands to the table. Great analysis as usual.
@@trikuncoro8986 This video 1960. Elvis got out of army in 1960. He’d been around since early 50s and made “Jailhouse Rock” movie before he went into army. Just an observation about “Legs like Elvis”. My legs are like elephant 😎😄

My in laws were good friends with Eddie and Alex’s parents. The group was actually from Borneo the more Portuguese oriented part of Indonesia. They were huge in the Netherlands. They played in a few Dutch movies also. Yeah Indo Rock is very good. Remember there was Golden Earring and Focus also. Many talented Dutch/Indos have been in rock.
Thank you Fil for your great analysis. You pronounced Ponthon right 😉. They already had a long time performing when this video was made. They played since their childhood (age 8-10) in Indonesia for the president, the KNIL soldiers and have been to many places since. A lot of artists came to see them perform (like the Beatles). So proud of them ❤
I’ve seen people play guitar behind their back, with their teeth, with the drummer whacking the strings, using the mic stand as a slide. I’ve seen people destroy their equipment with fireworks/explosives, and set their guitar on fire...and even get cracked on the head by the bass they had recently tossed in the air. I’ve seen many things. It’s the first time I’ve seen someone fret the guitar with their foot! And the first time I’ve seen this group! Thanks, Fil!
Wow, never heard of these guys. Killer stuff and trailblazing. Way ahead of their time but great musicians above all. Did you hear the fuzz on the Les Paul at 2:00? What the hell? The untold history of rock and roll.
that's reggy tielman, the grandmaster of the indorock rhythm guitar. the oldest brother and the motor that provided the perfect platform for his younger brothers to shine. he also started downtuning his guitar together with his brother andy to get a heavier sound. plus andy tielman added 4 extra strings to his guitar to make it a 10 string in order to widen the sound. when the first fender six string bass came out reggy tielman got one and used it as a guitar with as a result the most heavy rock and roll sound ever produced! both reggy tielman and andy tielman were innovating guitar legends, that's for sure!
They carried the first Les Paul's in the Netherlands around '59. Great show band, but I hear atonality in some of the solo parts. Very acrobatic with the stand up bass, but yes practically unhearable. Legendary indonesian band! Jan Akkerman was closely watching them from the start...... he knew he had to get a Les Paul.
I believe this might be new to me and I'm digging it. I believe I'm left speechless. You are the man professor. Chocolate guitars for everyone, peace Boogie Woogie
Lynn Dow hey Lynn I hope you get this; l heard on the live show your having some medical issues! I wish you a speedy recovery and please get well soon!! God bless!!!
You Kool Katz and your crazy Rock & Roll. You always somehow drag up acts I remember seeing in my mom and dad's record collection from my youth in the 60's but hadn't thought about in many decades Fil.
nice additional detail is that their old father was actually responsible for the show they performed. he literally said "you have to move on stage to show that you are there" even The Beatles have been inspired by the Tielman Brothers after various meetups together with their musical adventures in Germany in the early sixties
Do they? Woww.... I think Tielmas are the inspiration for many rockers... I am very proud ofcthem as Indonesian. Ashamed . I Just found out about them fww years ago....

Iam from Utrecht Holland. As a Dutchman Iam so proud you analysed this great performance. Yes were talking about 1960 before Hendrix, Clapton, J Beck and others..........
There was a social context to them as well. After a bitter war of independence the Tielman Brothers brought Dutch kids and Indonesian kids together on the dance floor. Sharing what they had in common not focussing on what divided them. Who needs politics when a guy is standing on a bass playing the guitar behind his head? Hail Hail Rock and Roll.
Sorry Richards - Dutch kids were never in the picture during the R&R time in Holland -- because there was always fights between Dutch boys & Indo ---- we dance better and have more style -- thats why the Dutch like us better.
These guys are the greatest. I'm sure they scared the mainstream establishment at the time and were not allowed to hit the big time. "Rock'n Roll will make you go crazy! Can't have that! Here is the proof!" Crazy good these guys are!
Wow! Hadn't heard of these guys. Thanks for the vid. One thing I found interesting is the drummer had switched the grip of his left hand when he finished the tour around the kit. Never seen a grip like that. Obviously he couldn't use the traditional grip to reach up high when he was in front, but he was still using it when he got back to his original position (sort of). I just wonder if that grip he used was his own invention or had it been done before.
These guys are fun! Not since Gene Krupa have I enjoyed an energized style drummer with talent to match the moves. Thanks for my first intro to Indo Rock, and believe you're my continuing graduate professor in popular music history influences evolution. I hope someday there's a Fil Henley Bachelor of Arts degree!
New to me. How'd I miss this. I think some of the big band artists employed some of this showmanship but not to this extent. Which is why I think it's possible their influence might not have been rock artists, but earlier.
Wow I've never even heard of these guys, oh man I am wondering if they are a huge hidden influence on their peers, sure they bought into the rock an' roll show , ( jerry lee, little richard etc) but they sure can play, thanks mr pegasus , you know I kinda like the way you go about your vids, you know what's going on, what has gone on, respect.
Wow that was nuts! Makes Little Richard & Jerry Lee Lewis look like choirboys. Don't know where you dig this stuff up Fil but that was so great... Thanks for an awesome post.

Remember there was Golden Earring and Focus also. Many talented Dutch/Indos have been in rock.
They not from borneo, actualy from timor island..
So proud of them ❤
Thanks! No problem!
Debbie you are quite right -they played since childhood - got to know the Tielman Brothers since 1958 during the EXPO World Fair ~ Brussels/ Belgium.
It doesn't matter how good of a musician you are, you've got to entertain people. These guys understood that.
Tielman Brothers are the best! Jimi Hendrix watched them and learned from Andy Tielman
When you listen to audio of this track without the video. it's still a great piece of early rock and roll.
Hi. Yes they are indonesian. Living in holland
First rock an roll in holland
I believe this might be new to me and I'm digging it. I believe I'm left speechless. You are the man professor. Chocolate guitars for everyone, peace Boogie Woogie
😹😹😹😹😹😹😹
They do boggle the mind.
Lynn Dow yes they do, my flabber is ghasted,
Lynn Dow hey Lynn I hope you get this; l heard on the live show your having some medical issues! I wish you a speedy recovery and please get well soon!! God bless!!!
@@lynndow3185 I second that Lynn, God bless
been a fan of these gus for years
just wow...amazing for the time...great comments Fil...Paul
You Kool Katz and your crazy Rock & Roll.
You always somehow drag up acts I remember seeing in my mom and dad's record collection from my youth in the 60's but hadn't thought about in many decades Fil.
Great video. Have to look them up.
nice additional detail is that their old father was actually responsible for the show they performed. he literally said "you have to move on stage to show that you are there" even The Beatles have been inspired by the Tielman Brothers after various meetups together with their musical adventures in Germany in the early sixties
Do they? Woww.... I think Tielmas are the inspiration for many rockers... I am very proud ofcthem as Indonesian. Ashamed . I Just found out about them fww years ago....
@@brigittaisworo5907 saya sudah tahuvdari dulu bahkan rock end roll merekalah yg menciptakaan tapi sayang di indonesia sendiri rock end roll tidak di anggap
my favorite one so far...epic..this was
Nice! Really good. That bass must play hell on the fingers.
And the brain. Remember, there are no frets and no markers. Fingering is....pretty much guesswork.
He's quite the teacher in more ways than one
Haha thanks Marcia!
"Standing on the bass playing the guitar behind his back, as you do."
Brilliant
New to me. How'd I miss this. I think some of the big band artists employed some of this showmanship but not to this extent. Which is why I think it's possible their influence might not have been rock artists, but earlier.
Brilliant!
Wow -I didn’t know about them. What great talent.
Talk about being ahead of the curve in 1960! They deserve way more acknowledgement.
