The Tielman Brothers - while I grew up with them, outside of the Netherlands and Germany they are the greatest band no one has ever heard of.
I can't believe I missed them!!!
the band from indonesia 🇮🇩🙂
Tielman brothers: Indo heroes. number one!!!
These guys played in the 60's harder than most metal bands these days. Their stage energy is absolutely insane!
First time I've seen/heard of these guys!!! All I can add is.. Like Crazy Man. Dig it Daddy-o. Thanks Fil for expanding my knowledge...Again.
Well if it's possible to have too much fun these guys are guilty as charged!
Hi Fil, I'm excited to tell someone, SO I just bought my first guitar today and took my first lesson at age 61!! I'm a lefty, so I had to order my Taylor GS Mini online. I was a professional drummer for over 40 years, but tinnitus got the best of me about nine years. I've had such a VOID inside me for the last 9 years. Well today I feel like a big kid again!! I I've been listening to guitar players my whole life of course being in bands, but also through all walks of life. So, today I became a "guitarist"! I am thankful to God for a second chance at having music fill my heart and soul again. Sorry to ramble, but I had to share this news with you and all the guitarists who will welcome me into the wonderful World of Guitar playing! 🎸 Peace to all my new brothers & sisters! ✌🏼 Can you tell I'm excited, lol!
chessdude67 good for you!!!
That's great man, he and a few others lately are getting me all worked up thinking about it myself
chessdude67 Your drumming background may find you tapping sticks on your guitar strings like the drummer in this video. Enjoy the guitar. I am sure you will be proficient very soon. No one can drum for 40 years without some serious musical skills.
Hi, let us know how it’s going
Cool! Inspiring!
I've never seen anyone walk around their drum set. Kudos!!!
as a kid i grew up being surrounded by their music and their presence so i got to see them quite a few times.
i'm truly humbled and thankful for that.
to me their jazzmaster 1961-1965 era was the best.
their shows only got better and more extreme over the years all the way up til 1981.
check out their songs marabunta, don't go away, java guitars, a.a.a. little hänschen twist, etc.
there were so many amazing indorock bands, but the tielman brothers set the standard and raised the bar for everyone time after time.
they influenced EVERY musician that ever played germany during 1959-1969.
yes, that includes lots of english and american musicians that would later become famous but also someone like benny from abba who as a fan and hep cats bandmember literally said to andy tielman that he wanted to be just like him.
yes, the tielman brothers did not just perform in the netherlands, belgium, germany, switserland or austria, but also played in sweden! (and denmark)
Dutch indo rockers pride!!
Andy Tielman was the best guitarplayer in the Netherlands.
He sadly died in 2011. RIP.
I’m 63, when I was a kid. Rock and roll was about energy and showmanship. Not technical proficiency like Vai & Satriani whatsoever. These guys rock out!
I'm 67 You are so RIGHT!
RIP all four of them .
I think they are massively underrated in the rock world.they desrve to be in the very front line.
Unfortunately true -- they were never recognize as such in Holland = the Best and forefathers of R&R .
Tielman Brothers are the best! Jimi Hendrix watched them and learned from Andy Tielman
The Indonesian Ventures!! 😹 I love that Goldtop💕 now we know where the Reverend Horton Heat got the idea to stand on the stand up bass!!!
Nothing but badass

Damn Professor this should have been the first video you ever did
4 Tielman Brothers, the Fathers of ROCK, just one word: MARVELOUS !!!!
I'm from Indonesia, and I'm proud of one of the legendary rock and roll bands the original tielman brothers from Indonesia, I remember my dad playing the song almost every day .. every time I hear the song I miss the father who is far there......
I love tielman brothers
Merdeka 😂😎👍❤️

Oiii banggg
These guys were resident in Hamburg for long periods of time. George Harrison rated "Indo Andy" as the best in town. The guys from The Monks (check 'em if you want some serious insanity!) and The Remo Four (look up their Peter Gunn or Rock Candy clips) used to run and see these guys whenever they had a break. Later in the '60s they ran stereo guitar rigs on stage; the guitarist of The Monks told me it was the best live sound he ever heard, while not terribly loud either. Ten Years After did time in Hamburg during their early days as The Jaybirds; you can bet Alvin Lee got his drum stick shtick from Andy!
George Harrison the beatles?
It's true they've been connected in hamburg at 1960.
They played in Hamburg nightclubs where the Beatles came to see them. George Harrison talks about 'Andy the Indian' in an interview. They were the first European band to play Gibson Les Paul guitars thanks to a fire in the Brussels world expo pavillion that burned their guitars, a related businessman then got them these Gibsons.
Theo you hit the nail Bruddah --true story , because I know The Tielman Brothers ~ since I met them at EXPO 1958 - I used to work & know ALL the Hawaiian Hula Dancers at the Hawaiian Village -used to work there at that time.
What a fantastic performance!! I'm sure the stray cats were influenced by these remarkably talented musicians. Great video Fil!
Yeah both the bass and drums reminded me of stray cats
Wow!!! I thought i knew everything there was to know about Rockabilly but these guys flew under my radar. Thanks for highlighting them. These cats were dynamite!!!
So glad you checked out link. What a trip. Fil, you Da Man
Now I see where “Jimmy” got his inspiration 😎
Jimi, and he was inspired by many Artists.....
Anyone who loves the history of rock needs to see this. Thanks Fil!.
What a performance!!! Their leg movement reminded me of Elvis. Such energy!! A great job pointing out their technical ability, Fil, and increasing my musical knowledge!!! You never disappoint ; )
Me too, thought of Elvis right away with those legs, and seeing them all move together was incredible!
@Sally Nielsen...The leg splits also remind me of Chuck Berry's live performances back in the 1950's with his leg splits and famous duck walk.
When I found out about the Tielman Brothers, when searching for rock bands from parts of the world which remained unknown to many Americans - well, I came to the same impression you did, plus, until then, I thought I was the only person to drum a guitar - they were great
How would you like to be the band that is told, you'll go on after these guys? When
the next band came on, the audience members would running to the bathrooms, a smoke break and the concession stand.
I have never seen a guy dance with the upright bass like that. Great video and analysis, thanks Fil.
Man these guys don't take a back seat to anybody. Superb musicianship and something I'm sad that I never heard till now. This is just happy music and top notch good old rock and roll at its best . Shame they never made it to North America. Our loss !
I’ve seen people play guitar behind their back, with their teeth, with the drummer whacking the strings, using the mic stand as a slide. I’ve seen people destroy their equipment with fireworks/explosives, and set their guitar on fire...and even get cracked on the head by the bass they had recently tossed in the air. I’ve seen many things. It’s the first time I’ve seen someone fret the guitar with their foot! And the first time I’ve seen this group! Thanks, Fil!
No wonder Indonesia have many good musician today
I haven't seen these guys in decades! You were so right, Fil. Musicianship AND showmanship was at 100%! Wow!
They carried the first Les Paul's in the Netherlands around '59. Great show band, but I hear atonality in some of the solo parts. Very acrobatic with the stand up bass, but yes practically unhearable. Legendary indonesian band! Jan Akkerman was closely watching them from the start...... he knew he had to get a Les Paul.
I see some Elvis in the leg moments and where Hendricks got some of his guitar playing style. ;-)
Crazy! Legs like Elvis. Cracks me up they always wear these formal looking suits. and do all those moves. Fun
Really? They had been around when Elvis is no one, so truth is Elvis copying their style
@@trikuncoro8986 This video 1960. Elvis got out of army in 1960. He’d been around since early 50s and made “Jailhouse Rock” movie before he went into army. Just an observation about “Legs like Elvis”. My legs are like elephant 😎😄
@@shirleymuhleisen683 Yes Shirley ~ you are correct Elvis rotated back to conus 1960 [=USA], from RayBarracks~ Friedberg/Germany - I met him in person -we were in the USArmy/Germany during that time. But I also knew the TielmanBrothers -from the EXPO Brussels 1958.
When you stop and think that "Rock & Roll" officially took off in 1955 and these guys come along with their showmanship style of playing, throughout this performance they trade off leads and solos while keeping in perfect rhythm. I would say these guys where ahead of their times. excellent analysis and homework on the Tielman Brothers. thanks for this one Fil.
👍
New to me. How'd I miss this. I think some of the big band artists employed some of this showmanship but not to this extent. Which is why I think it's possible their influence might not have been rock artists, but earlier.
Brilliant!
These guys are fun! Not since Gene Krupa have I enjoyed an energized style drummer with talent to match the moves. Thanks for my first intro to Indo Rock, and believe you're my continuing graduate professor in popular music history influences evolution. I hope someday there's a Fil Henley Bachelor of Arts degree!
He's quite the teacher in more ways than one
Haha thanks Marcia!
When I saw two low strung Les Paul late 50s I clicked and was blow away. Way ahead of their time considering that is was 1960. Great one Fil, Jeff in LA USA
Finally, your radar reach our national music hero, treasure and legend.
Thank you very much a big lot, Phil.
Greeting from Indonesia 🇮🇩
Crazy, man, crazy! Those Indonesian boys could sure rock! Never heard of them or the Indo Rock scene -- my loss. Great to have you back in the real time analysis saddle again.
Eddie and Alex Van Halen are also from a Dutch-Indonesian background and heritage, I believe.

@@jimmycampbell78 Did not know that. Cool!
@@tjvanpopta Cool!
Coolest drum solo ever. Were these guys known in England? Looks like a lot of English bands may have "borrowed" some stage tricks from them
Not to my knowledge but I wasn't here at the time!
a lot a english bands and their musicians saw the tielman brothers and other indorock bands such as the black dynamites, the black magic, the javalins, etc. perform live during 1960-1968 in the many german rock and roll clubs.
the first english rock and roll band to play in hamburg was a group called the jets.
it featured a young tony sheridan who was responsible for the first ever beatles single.
fellow jets bandmember james "jimmy ward" macken joined indorock band the black dynamites.
the indorock bands were without a single doubt the best bands of that era and played the best clubs for the highest fee.
the jets did ok for an english band, but the beatles played the worst clubs for the lowest fee.
they were all still in the process of learning how to play, so of course all these english musicians would look up to indorock bands such as the tielman brothers who already had it together.
Fil I assume these guys never got famous in North America? They are insanely good, but I never heard of them. They were excellent!
They famous around europe...
Hi. Yes they are indonesian. Living in holland
First rock an roll in holland
Hey Fil, please do The Sweet - Set me free.
This video was great btw. Everybody was smiling/happy
My wife is Dutch/Indo. Her parents were born in Java. My wife in the Netherlands. My wife’s dad loved them. I imagine the Van Halen’s like them also. My in laws were good friends with Eddie and Alex’s parents.
The group was actually from Borneo the more Portuguese oriented part of Indonesia. They were huge in the Netherlands. They played in a few Dutch movies also. Yeah Indo Rock is very good.
Remember there was Golden Earring and Focus also. Many talented Dutch/Indos have been in rock.
They not from borneo, actualy from timor island..
Indonesia rocks! Love the look of the well-dressed audience too!
I should add - one of the most incredible drum performances I've ever witnessed - and that is my instrument.
Also, you're right about technical ability v. showmanship. When I see a band live - especially a rock and roll band - I will take showmanship and energy over technical ability every time. But the great thing about these guys was that they totally had technical ability, but were prepared to let it take second place to showmanship if necessary. :-)
Ducktail hair slap bass ! Love the 50 and early 60s rock
The Verve: the drugs don't work.
Tielman Brothers: the drugs do work. For us.
these guys are more kicked ass than the beatles, with 1st series of fender gear and 1st series of les paul, and also Travis Barker drum style in 1958, more insane than Portnoy style
There were no electric bass guitar in that time, so they still use electric guitar with 4 string EADG they played instead of 6 strings
WHERE DID YOU GET THIS FIL? THIS IS GREAT , GUY IS SPANKIN THAT DOG HOUSE BASS THANKS FIL
Have you ever seen such an incredible performance ? TB, you are aliens.... Remember, this was 1960s....not 2021...
Just shocked that I've never heard of them. I'll bet they would have achieved far greater prominence had they moved their act to the US back then. Its almost a crime against music history that they werent better well known.
Leave it to you, Fil, to find a gem like this. You ROCK!
I get a playful scary time travel reaction to this group like they are really from our time and went back to 1960 to have some fun.
These guys were so, so good. Without Indorock the Netherlands may have still had a rock 'n' roll scene starting in the late 50s, early 60s, but it would never have been so unique and cool as this.
You Kool Katz and your crazy Rock & Roll.
You always somehow drag up acts I remember seeing in my mom and dad's record collection from my youth in the 60's but hadn't thought about in many decades Fil.
This is what rock N roll should be about Music & fun
Ok Fil, You mentioned their popularity in Germany. I may be going out on a limb with this, but when you said that the first thing that struck me was how it looked a little Scorpions like. I wonder if the boys may have seen this a little ones and emulated them. Something eerie about this.
of course the schenker brothers know the tielman brothers!
There was a social context to them as well. After a bitter war of independence the Tielman Brothers brought Dutch kids and Indonesian kids together on the dance floor. Sharing what they had in common not focussing on what divided them. Who needs politics when a guy is standing on a bass playing the guitar behind his head? Hail Hail Rock and Roll.
Sorry Richards - Dutch kids were never in the picture during the R&R time in Holland -- because there was always fights between Dutch boys & Indo ---- we dance better and have more style -- thats why the Dutch like us better.
Thanks for this!
There are some benefits to having a colonial past as a country; these guys would never have been considered Dutch without it. I'm proud of them!
Amazing..semangat rock n roll awal thn 60 an. TB satu pelopornya.
The Tielman Brothers are like a cross between Chuck Berry, Eddie Van Halen and The Stray Cats.

Fantastic group but see link below to an old video of the earlier rock and roll pioneers from the U.S., Bill Haley and his Comets performing their 1956 instrumental hit "Rudy's Rock" on the famous (American) Ed Sullivan show in 1957 and with some frantic but amusing antics on the big base plus great guitar work and a good drummer. They had many hits but are most well known for their huge nationwide hit "Rock Around the Clock" first recorded in 1954 and becoming very popular when included in the movie Blackboard Jungle in March 1955 and also in the movies Rock Around the Clock and Don't Knock the Rock in 1956 and 1957 and decades later in the movie American Graffitti and the TV show Happy Days. That record was #1 on the U.S. pop charts for 2 months in 1955 and sold over a million copies in just one month in the spring of 1955 and many millions worldwide since-from Wikipedia: "a figure of at least 25 million was cited by the Guinness Book of World Records in its category "Phonograph records: Biggest Sellers" from the early 1970s until the 1990s, when the advent of compact discs led to Guinness discontinuing the category." I suspect the Tielman Brothers copied some of their style and performance antics from Bill Haley and his Comets and perhaps others like Chuck Berry from back in the mid 50's but I highly respect and admire their talent and energy.

I've always wondered what it would look like if Jimi Hendrix, Angus Young, Flea and Keith Moon were in the same band together... now I think I know...
Fantastic drummer. The band reminds me of the earlier 1950's Bill Haley and his Comets and the showmanship of the guitar players reminds me of the 50's Chuck Berry.
Great band but to all those here suggesting that they started Rock and Roll, they certainly did not...see Wikipedia link below for the detailed history which goes back to the early 50's and some say even before the 50's:

Excellent video mate, very interesting trivia as well which a lot of people might not be aware of. Very well done! Being mixed dutch/indonesian, I pretty much grew up hearing this music from my dad and it's good to see it getting some recognition abroad.
nice additional detail is that their old father was actually responsible for the show they performed. he literally said "you have to move on stage to show that you are there" even The Beatles have been inspired by the Tielman Brothers after various meetups together with their musical adventures in Germany in the early sixties

And the brain. Remember, there are no frets and no markers. Fingering is....pretty much guesswork.
In 1950 the white people and their descendants(indo) or dutch goverment employees chose to become citizens of dutch or indonesia. One of them is the tielman family and the van halen family.
Musik rock itu lahir di Indonesia.
Ini yg gw tulis di vlog2 youtube. Betapa BERDOSA nya dunia kepada Indonesia.
Indonesia does not need the world, the world needs Indonesia. Indonesia has everything.
The world has been torturing Indonesia, but Indonesia keeps contributing to the world.

Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry put on quite a show also. I had never heard of these guy before. Thanks Fil . Always bringing new bands to the table. Great analysis as usual.
Wow a supercharged version of Bill Haley and the Comets
Crazy good! Never heard of them. Thanks, Fil, for another introduction to something old but new to me❣️
Wow! Hadn't heard of these guys. Thanks for the vid. One thing I found interesting is the drummer had switched the grip of his left hand when he finished the tour around the kit. Never seen a grip like that. Obviously he couldn't use the traditional grip to reach up high when he was in front, but he was still using it when he got back to his original position (sort of). I just wonder if that grip he used was his own invention or had it been done before.
Interesting. Seems like a very early case of 'purposeful distortion use.'
Great selection Fil! Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Its worth remembering Indonesia built some good Sqjuire guitars, JagMaster and Anniversary Fat Tele. Indo, btw.
wnen i go, i'll look for these.
man, for a minute i was lost.
I remember seeing this clip here about 2 years ago. Especiially liked the drum sticks and the foot on the neck.
When i saw Deep Purple at the Cow Palace (storm Bringer), this was there.. Blackmore had like 5 Strats on stage at the end.
Saw first with The Tielman Brothers??? Maybe.

These guys were great.
So glad you talked about that drum solo! I was watching it and saying “Drum solos usually bore me, but this guy is incredible!” Like you said, it was easy to tap along to and circling the drum kit was a great trick, but I just the loved the fun he was having and the little shoulder shimmy he was doing during the first part of the solo. Great job as usual, Fil.
Wow, never heard of these guys. Killer stuff and trailblazing. Way ahead of their time but great musicians above all. Did you hear the fuzz on the Les Paul at 2:00? What the hell? The untold history of rock and roll.
that's reggy tielman, the grandmaster of the indorock rhythm guitar.
the oldest brother and the motor that provided the perfect platform for his younger brothers to shine.
he also started downtuning his guitar together with his brother andy to get a heavier sound.
plus andy tielman added 4 extra strings to his guitar to make it a 10 string in order to widen the sound.
when the first fender six string bass came out reggy tielman got one and used it as a guitar with as a result the most heavy rock and roll sound ever produced!
both reggy tielman and andy tielman were innovating guitar legends, that's for sure!
"Standing on the bass playing the guitar behind his back, as you do."
