My kuia Maunga her brother Kima Hakaraia was a Master carver back in the 1950s. Koro Kima, use to get a piece of drift wood from the lake in Ohinemutu, see some tourists enter the village, do a carving on the drift wood sell it to the tourists. Koro Kima would buy sweets and broken biscuits for all the kids from the sale.
at has been that way since our tipuna it dosent matter north or south you dont blow on the wood because it is tapu too blow life into somthing that is not yet alive
He is right the best carvers came out of that kura carving, looking at going to visit the place because my koroua came out of the old carving kura there with his cousin pine taiapa they was sent there by there parents to further was told this now i am eager to know more if only women can do it
@Wahine2019 Kia ora sis. Te Wananga O Aotearoa have great whakairo courses in Aucks, I'm a chick and they let me do one for a year in 2018. There's part-time, 6 month courses too. I dunno where u live but they probably hv courses all over the place. Low cost and we got chisels to keep as well. I just got a student loan to pay it, but some courses are free.

I just learnt how to carve taught myself mostly. But I was told not to blow on the wood. Is it different in certain iwi? I'm in the north.
