  • Solo piece based on theories by Bertolt Brecht. Focusing primarily on the technique of alienation or also known as the 'v' effect. The year is 1860 during the Industrial Revolution, and a blacksmith is struggling with corporate greed, as his businesses is over thrown by the bigger companies, and watches as he is replaced by machines. The message of glorifying small businesses and the dangers of machines is essentially what this piece is about, reflecting Brecht’s social and political beliefs.

Great work and thanks for sharing. I'm a drama teacher and am using this performance for a responding task for my students. They're analysing your use of the 'v' effect. Well done! :)

      Hi Shelley,
I was wondering if you had any ideas on what sort of questions I could get my seniors to do in response to watching this performance that are similar to what you mightve asked. First year drama teacher so I'm wanting to collect as much resources as possible! Thank you. 😊

Great job! Congratulations! Also, your video is super helpful, because I am working on a Brecht play at this moment and it helped me to understand the basic principles of a Brechtian play. Thank you! 👏🏼

Use of placard, distinct clothing representing a profession (blacksmith wouldn't use a white shirt and slacks), use of song, bring the audience in, and then remove the immersion through these methods.

This is 99% improv. I went into the performance with a generel idea of what I wanted to explore. Only thing already set was the music and what I did in the play. The monologue was improvised.

Hi, Great work!!! Could you tell me how much you scored and things you would change in retrospective?

Daniel Peter I don't have the grade for this specific performance at the moment, however my overall theatre grade was a 6. In IB theatre, the written tasks and reports are more important than the performance itself, so a good performance can only get you so far, when 3/4 of the criteria lies within the written aspect. Therefore this is the key to a good grade.
For things I would change? Well I enjoy improvisation, and what you see is mostly monologue created on the spot, with a few key moments and thoughts that I knew I wanted to show. The issue with this was that I flubbed some of my words which ruins he moment. The song was also improvised, and the end product was therefore not as good as in my rehearsal. So have learned the song would have been nice. I also wish to find the perfect amount of Brechtian theory in my performance. If you look at my other video of alienation, you can see that I have a greater amount of his theory than in this one. And finding the perfect balance of bringing the audience in and then alienating them is a difficult task to master.
So if you picked Bertolt Brecht I advice you to work on this concept for a better performance, however if you wish for a high grade, I recommend putting in most of the effort into your report; as I did.
      Hope this helps!
