Thank you guys for this conversation and just getting to hear you both express such admiration and love for eachother, especially through the raw and visceral journey you’ve both been through in your careers. ❤
Fury is my all time favorite movie. I have a stressful job. When I log on every morning, I always say "Best job I've ever had" out loud to myself. In other words, embrace the suck and get after it. Bravo on a legit cinematic masterpiece.
David Ayer is one hell of an underrated director. Harsh Times, Street Kings, End Of Watch, Sabotage, Fury, Bright, even Suicide Squad are really entertaining. That guy also wrote Training Day. What a great director. Amazing interview btw
@BooneLuleyo.....with ya brother, David is a stud writer/director. What I especially love about the dude aside from him making ultra masculine, hard-edged guy flicks, is his ability to bring out the best out of his actors eg. Christian Bale in "HARSH TIMES', Keanu Reeves in STREET KINGS etc. The fact that TRAINING DAY is absolutely one my all-time favorite urban action flicks speaks volumes of David's mad skills as a writer. Bonus.....he seems like a good, solid, humble dude. Love & Respect________mykey from toronto
......up until Training Day, the only cop flick I was really into was 'INTERNAL AFFAIRS' with Richard Gere & Andy Garcia. When Training Day blew-up and made gobs of moula ($$$$$), looked like movie studio's were looking to cash-in on the genre and released cop-flicks like every other month......DARK BLUE, PRIDE & GLORY, DIRTY etc.
Great interview. I'm 68 and can relate to the real you of both of you. Helps me understand we aren't all fucked up. We're real people. We are the real people.
Jon, I wanna thank you. What an awesome interview. David let his soul cry out; and my soul ripped with his as I heard him speak. The warnings, the life lessons, the love for the game…the purity of it all. Wow. It was dope. It was like getting to hear two OGs talk about their war stories. Homie, this moved me. And I’m a story teller too; for I am a preacher of the everlasting Gospel of Jesus and I go around telling the youth how we as individuals can make a difference and make this world a better one. My test became my TESTimony, my mess became my MESSage, my misery turned into my minisTRY, and my pain became my platform. Bro, May God keep blessing you and David (I’m a big fan of both of you.). And I’m also directing a movie (cops and robbers) that I pray it’ll make an impact on not only the viewers but the actors involved like FURY did for you. Peace, OG. ✌🏼 PS-I also have a dog named Bam-Bam.
Being an LA native myself and Growing up on Pico/Vermont area, I resonate so much with Mr. Ayer’s stories when he speaks of gangs and specific streets. I was surrounded by many of them MS, 18 St, Playboys, Harpy’s. Not only gangs but tagging crews In the late 90’s and early 2000’s, also. You can tell how much Mr. Ayer loves Los Angeles and that makes me happy because I share the same love for my city. I’ll forever be grateful I grew up in those environments because it taught me to be respectful with everyone and alert when I’m out and about. Thank you so much Jon for having David on and thank you Mr. Ayer for sharing your life stories and brilliant films with all of us. I hope to work with you professionally one day.
Fury: Ayer’s best movie and Bernthal’s best performance. Excellent interview, gentlemen…there’s nothing better than hearing about real people in life, as well as Hollywood. Thank you! Cheers
Thanks for sharing your stories and experiences with us David. You've always been one of my favorite filmmakers and I own every movie of yours to my knowledge on DVD and Blu-ray. I hope you never stop creating and always keep that honesty with your work and for the love of God I hope we get to see your cut of Squad one day man.
This is such a great interview! A lot of the stuff you guys talk about regarding the sharing of emotions made me think of loss. I can't tell you how many times, after losing a loved one, I've later surmised that I've lost pieces of myself because those lost loved ones were the ONLY people I had particular discussions with or shared specific emotions with in confidence. It's always nice to know others with the same frame of mind are out there.
This is an amazing interview and discussion. Never really thought about David very much but has become one of my favorite people after listening to him.
Of all the films and shows that I've seen you in and absolutely loved, this right here, what you're doing here, this is so incredibly raw and powerful, just to listen to you and these guests. Don't ever stop, brother. It's inspiring.
Jon. This is the first one I watched. I loved it, and what an amazing work you're doing here. It warms my heart with hope with all that kindness. Thank you so much for doing all of it and may you receive it in double.
Love these unfiltered interviews Jon and crew. Makes work go by so much quicker especially with the length of the videos. Real ones is up there with the best.
Awww 🥰 this is the next evolution of male mentality for filmmaking... the search for truth and history in the moment... in the making and what's then translated on-screen... vibes of Schrader here - would've been so groovy to see Jon directed by him in Gigalo at this stage in both their careers and souls; First Reformed meets the original Gere film meets the unique energy Jon brings to every role. Stoked to see Ayer making more modern-masculine art like Fury and Watch with that ground-level, muddy, sweaty pathos and sincerity. Muchos gracias.
As someone who has never served, watching war movies has always made me appreciate the sacrifice that our vets have made for us. I have to say though Fury stands out above the rest to me. The aspect of the tank makes the bond of brotherhood during war that much more intense and unique. I love that movie and the scene where Shia prays with the soldier dying is almost too much for me to watch. "You believe in Jesus?" "Yes." "You're alright then, I'm gonna pray with you now." Dude, I can't help but cry every time. He didn't know that man at all but he was his brother regardless and he wasn't gonna let him die alone. It makes you think about how many times in history someone's had to do that for a fellow brother in arms. Thank David for that moment alone let alone the whole movie. Thank you to our veterans. I'm forever grateful.
It's magical to see that David at some point seems to forget he's in front of a camera, and he's just talking to his friend. Thank you for sharing your story, David. It's difficult to fully understand what you went through, but i'm happy you're around giving us the gift of you art.
A consistently underrated director, he is like the James Ellroy of the film industry. Street Kings is one of my favorite films! I hope we see the AyerCut of Suicide Squad one day…
Just rewatched End of Watch last night for the first time since it released. It’s always been one of my favorite movies, but I didn’t know anything about David until this interview. Not only did end of watch end up being one of the best action movies of all time, but it is also the movie that I first saw Michael Peña in a starring role like that and as a Mexican kid that made the movie for me even more special.
Peace n love yall. I love this podcast! It brings the average person a look into the lives of famous people and their traumas and most definitely shatters the veil between what we see about hollywood actors, directors, war vets, etc!! That, we are all human beings first! Our traumas are very much the same things, just on different scales. So I'll leave yall with this, may humanity truly go within and heal so we can meet one another face to face without discrimination and learn to see ourselves in each other. Peace yall!! 🎉
My favorite director!! The only director that puts my people RAZA! in nearly every movie he directs, and he makes us shine in them. I appreciate him so much for that, because he gives us representation and not in the back round but in the front view for the masses to see and for our people to see them selves in the front screen.
This is a dope interview! He is truly a real one! Man I forgot about harsh times! Such a great film! Christian Bale was dope in it!!! The fact that he hires people who would never get a chance! That is so dope
Also on the good side I’ve watched harsh times …. 20 times plus it’s very relatable to real people like myself …. And the punisher was one of my fav series … love this podcast by the way keep it up
such a dope interview. i didnt even realize that most of my favorite films are david ayer films. street kings, end of watch, harsh times, fury fuckin awesome movies.
If you like David Ayer I 100% recommend reading the book "Blind Man's Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage Book by Annette Lawrence Drew, Christopher Drew, and Sherry Sontag"
Fantastic, in depth conversation. Perfect name for this show/podcast... REAL ONES. Fury is my favorite war film and I had a brief conversation with Jon in Kentucky back in 2014 about that (and The Walking Dead as well)... Hearing about how those guys met with WWII vets and got told stories that weren't even told to those guys' families... That movie is raw and that's what makes it so great. Ayer has a fantastic filmography... So many great films. Also... WB self sabatoged themselves... Gunn ain't getting any scores on the board... We had the DC universe... And the studio and executives swooped in and snatched it away... #ReleaseTheAyerCut #RestoreTheSnyderVerse
David ayer is a talented, gritty and awsome director, his L.A crime films are intense and real life films , huge fan of this guy , FURY, HARSH TIMES , END OF WATCH, STREET KINGS ,BRIGHT and THE TAX COLLECTOR awsome films , his version of suicide squad needs to be released , great interview
As a young man in the navy, joining somewhat for similar reasons. This has woken me up to my humanity. I also write, read and have nothing to live for until now. I have a vision for a film that I’ve wanted to complete. Regardless of it creating money. I want to make one film, one album and one book before I die. I’ll consolidate myself more now, to create what is necessary.
Thank you guys thank you David thank you Jon I really needed that. I doubt he'll ever see this but David Ayers in my humble opinion and I'm just a working stiff you're the best director we got right now man. All the work you're doing it's going to mean something a great deal to a lot of guys like myself I grew up similar to you. It's so true that to love you have to tear away from the wit and the cynicism in the sarcasm and everything that your persona is that makes you this rogue anarchist whatever that you think you are and I'm speaking about myself now and you inspire me to want to strip all that s*** away and see what's there and to be blunt there's very few filmmakers I think who have ever done that. I think most of the filmmakers I've always worship stay in their personas and that's why I worshipped them as sad as that might sound. I'm not going to name names but you know the macho boys club of. lndyi 90 shit I'm talking about. And I'm still addicted to their work and love it very much. But I think there's a new few and you're included in this and now I will drop names Aster, panos cosmatos, the dude that did the witch in The lighthouse, and also the guy that did the Colin Farrell Nicole Kidman crazy dear movie, well I has deer in the title anyway. For working stiff like me that always wanted to be in that business but never had the guts to go out there and try I look up to guys like you and what I look forward to is seeing your films. As trite as it may sound it makes me know they're still beauty and hope and wet in the world and people that see the world like I do and people that see the world totally different than I do that's important to. But dude I got to tell you your inspiration and stripping away all the macho bull s*** that we genex types kind of still try to keep for ourselves because we're scared to get rid of it because it's the defense mechanism. You talking about stripping all that away and talking about actually loving and looking at society seeing your place in it you're going to be one known as one of the greatest filmmakers that ever lived in my opinion and you already are you spoke for me in Harsh Times. And then in a genius move you spoke for my grandfather's generation with Fury. I don't think there's another writer-director that could have done it that sincere and our generation. And now for the host John you are a big part of that because your performance move the s*** out of me everybody's in their did. Of course because I still cling onto the macho bull shit my favorite thing you ever have done so far is the punisher but..... I sure am looking forward to see what you do next and I watch your acting closely. For you to convince me in walking Dead that you were that guy. Then i see Fury and sicario and both your characters not actually repulsed me and scared me but I'd love them at the same time. The character in fiore because it proves that the tough rebel without a cause jaded dick can actually sometimes be the most sensitive guy that makes the ultimate sacrifice that is a beautiful arc. And frankly and sicario you just played what I think of every cop anyway so.... Yeah I'm a little biased and a little jaded. The goddamn you were so convincing in both roles. Then there's the punisher and dude that was the biggest shock of my life because I thought you were casted wrong and I thought it wasn't going to work. I'm very proud to say it's my favorite comic book piece to date. Your performance is the best translation of any comic book character come to life so far. And even though I always thought kingpin was rather boring d'onofrio's performance of that just blew me the f*** away. Yeah I'm sorry I kind of consider daredevil and your show as one piece but because I was interested in your character. I wasn't ever a superhero guy I was a Dan klaus-peter o bage Love and rockets Indy, kind of kind of guy. You actually made me love a hero our anti-hero it's up to you. Actually started reading those f****** comics because of you cuz that wasn't my bag. But I had to see if I was right and I was yours is the most honest interpretation of that work. I've gone down kind of long hair but the clothes I just like to thank you again John for the interviews with the Chicago president Hell's Angel guy and the interviews with the other older Hell's Angel guy whose name I can't remember right now. Those two interviews in this interview have genuinely made me take a look at myself and want to change for the better thank you. Please keep the show going at all costs I'll try to donate where I can.
Innncredible. Dream or mine to be in a movie of David Ayer’s. I’ve heard a lot stories about him… Seems like such a G. Much love to both of you. Jon also is a dream to meet and just chop it up with, much less be in a movie with
I think "Fury" is a top 5 war film. Fantastic in every way. End Of Watch is also rad as hell. His movies and style remind me of Michael Winner and Brian G Hutton.
Bro, I just worked with you in Santa Clarita, the first time was king Richard, but this time I was standing next to sound and you were coming up to get wired, our eyes were locked as you approached and pulled your hand out for a shake and introduced yourself and I said what’s up bro, and told you my name. I knew right there and then you were a Real One! Keep doing what you’re doing and looking forward to the next time we meet.
Me and my kids met John at a boxing match her close to Chicago! Solid as dude! I ambushed him lol but he was cool and took a pic with my boys! Made our night thanks John B! Much love brother!
All I want now is a Punisher movie/series Written & Directed by David Ayer starring Jon Bernthal 🙌
Oh man!!!! What a great idea!!!
Started watching the punisher when I was 10 I’m now a psychopath 😂

David is such a cool dude…I love the no BS side of him and how real he keeps it real and that is SO RARE. Thank you for this gem❤️
David is such a genuine real one!! Such a class act and deserves for his true vision to be seen

Release the damn Ayer Cut!!!
But, for real, I love David Ayer because his characters are hardened and/or grounded. No sugarcoating.

Gosh David Ayer and John Bernthal are so inspiring. Acting in a David Ayer film where he's allowed to be himself would be a dream come true.
This was such an awesome, humbling, and insightful conversation. Huge respect.

LOVE THIS MAN, So deep and interesting I hope your life goes good for you. #releasetheayercut

End of Watch was insane. It was as close to real as a project could get. Even the new movie Ayer came out with was pretty damn good…

Innncredible. Dream or mine to be in a movie of David Ayer’s. I’ve heard a lot stories about him… Seems like such a G. Much love to both of you. Jon also is a dream to meet and just chop it up with, much less be in a movie with
That was so badass. Needed to hear all of this. Thank you.
I think "Fury" is a top 5 war film. Fantastic in every way. End Of Watch is also rad as hell. His movies and style remind me of Michael Winner and Brian G Hutton.
Wow. Such a G. I relate to this man beyond. So many 💎
Bro, I just worked with you in Santa Clarita, the first time was king Richard, but this time I was standing next to sound and you were coming up to get wired, our eyes were locked as you approached and pulled your hand out for a shake and introduced yourself and I said what’s up bro, and told you my name.
