    Very useful, always a good use of vocabulary, good precise word choices to convey exact meaning. This is always noticed by me. It makes things much more clear.

    Another reason that you don't want to remove all of the strings at once is that you run the risk of your soundpost falling. If this happens, you'll need a special tool and the knowledge to set it back up. You will most likely have to get a Luthier to place it; it's very inconvienient. Lesson learned.
    Great videos, Simon. Keep it up! :)

      Billy Alvis that is right! But never happened to me when I removed all strings. Usually in todays violins the soundpost has enough pressure not to fall. But if it falls, it is very bad, because even the violin maker will never find its excact position again. Therefore the sound will change and you have to play in the new soundpost position. Thanks for your comment 🙂

    I have been learning to play violin for 2 weeks and your video is brilliant because I have pulled the strings off it (one at a time) a few times, as well as the chin rest and bridge. Today, my strings had the peg soap treatment and sounded like they had lost the will to live. So I rewired them, it sounds like a violin now and less like a fog horn. Your video has helped me to understand that some retuning will be necessary and I will try the chromatic scales tomorrow, thanks for posting such an excellent video full of good advice for everyone.

    Thank you for this. Much more comprehensive than many other in the same genera. My fiddle pegs haven't seen peg compound (soap) for at least 30 years. Guess i better get some.

      Thank you! Fitting the pegs, using peg soap and do the winding correctly will lead to a pleasing tuning experience with the pegs :)

      Just put on 2 strings loosely without the bridge, then take the bridge and put it under those two strings and carefully build up the tension so that the bridge can't fall. Next you take the 3rd string and carefully put a little bit of tension on it as well. Only when you have all strings on, raise the tension a little bit and check the bridge position. Then raise the tension to the normal notes, but also do it gradually all strings at once step by step, so that the tension stays even on the bridge.

    How high can the E string tune past E? Think you can get it up to G on a full size?

  • @ecinajnnyl

    How can I replace 2 strings that were put in wrong pegs during a repair ? The d and a strings are in each others peg ( d is crossed over to a peg a is in d peg ) . I was going to put temporary strings on each to hold place then redo it with the better / new strings but seems I’d need to remove both to do this and I don’t think it’s advised to take 2 off at one time . I just had work done to repair the bridge and sound peg inside , he apparently put the 2 in wrong places . Any advice would be appreciated I didn’t want to drive to that repair shop again ty

    Thank you for the video Simon, this is extra helpful as I've just changed my strings today! I've been playing quite a bit to break them in but my G string sounds awfully metallic, so I feel a bit better knowing it will probably mellow out!
    Also, would you consider doing a video on your equipment? (violin, bow, shoulder rest, case etc?) :)

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you, that could be a good idea! What strings have you on your violin now?

    • @feralfae3391
      @feralfae3391 7 лет назад

      They're just a basic set of Thomastik Dominants, I got them from Polychord after the video you made about their website :) I'm quite happy with the A and D string but I'm hoping the others will warm up a bit more still.

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  7 лет назад +1

      Dominants are very good strings, which many Top-Soloists still use. I think just their lifespan isn't that great. Also I heard, that the E-String is commonly replaced by other brands, but that is very subjective and also depends on the instrument! Great that you order from Polychord! :) Be patient with the warmup, they will change a lot after one or two weeks. Just the E-string doesn't need much time to play in

    • @feralfae3391
      @feralfae3391 7 лет назад

      Yeah, my teacher said I might have to change the E eventually, thankfully Polychord ships to europe so I can experiment a bit with strings now that I know of it.
      And thank you for the advice, I will let them settle for a while! :)

    This was helpful thank you. When you think you have them perfectly in tune with the pegs but they are just slightly out of pitch how do the fine tuners work?

      My Canon 600D doesn't have that in video mode unfortunately, but I think I have gotten better with the focus. In this video I played too much around and the aperture was too high so not much of a room to move. Thank you for your comment, I am aware of that problem and will upgrade my gear when I can!
