      48:32 This movie is not Sean Connery's last film as James Bond. After being replaced by George Lazenby for On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), Connery returned to make Diamonds Are Forever (1971), which was his true last film for EON productions (the filming company that holds the James Bond's IP until the present day). However, in 1983 he returned to play the iconic Agent 007 in the unofficial film Never Say Never Again, which is a rehash of Thunderbolt (the story of this film is a bit convoluted, as it has to do with copyright disputes). That same year Octopussy came out, an official film from EON productions, with Roger Moore as James Bond. In other words, two Bond films were released in the same year, which is crazy!

    Something many don't pick up on these days: the context of timing. This film was released a mere 22 years after the end of World War II. Britain and Japan had been blood enemies up until that end, with many Brits and British holdings having been harmed by the Japanese. By comparison, we're 23 years out from 9/11, and the memories and pain are still deep. This film was bold in showing the healing between the two former enemies, even going so far as to show a deep spirit of cooperation between the two nations' spy networks (fictional though they may be), and showing racial unions, something often still scandalous back then. This film was really a wonder for its time.

    In the novel version of You Only Live Twice, Fleming had Bond injured during the final attack on the base and he suffers from a form of amnesia. Kissy Suzuki helps him recover from his injuries and takes him back to the fishing village, but still suffers from amnesia. She convinces that he's really Japanese and live as a couple. Now the world thinks Bond didn't survive the destruction of Blofeld's base and lives with Kissy. She eventually gets pregnant and has James Bond's son.

For me Director Terence Young and Sean Connery lightened the Flemming books up, and set the foundation for future 007 films. I bet you if you went by the Ian Flemming Books word for word, James Bond in the movies would have never been that popular. So glad they changed it for the screen.

    Couple of facts about You Only Live Twice. At the time, the volcano lair was the most expensive set ever built for a movie, which arguably is still impressive to look at to this day. With regards to this being Connery's last Bond, he apparently had an awful experience filming this movie and decided to quit. It was only when he was offered a very large sum of money to reprise the role, that he came back for Diamond are Forever.

    • @jollyrodgers7272
      @jollyrodgers7272 7 дней назад +1

      Actually, Connery expressed his displeasure with playing Bond BEFORE this was filmed, as they took so much time to shoot, plus the extra time to promote them that he never had time for acting in much else - and a fear he was being typecast. I never heard of any bad experience he had on this film to make him quit Bond.

    • @Jeremy-f3s
      @Jeremy-f3s 7 дней назад

      He'd got sick of Bond in general anyway by this point as he didn't want to be typecast, he only agreed to come back for Diamonds cos they agreed to pay money to a Scottish charity he nominated although then bizarrely enough he returned for Never Say Never in 83 so money talks I guess.

    • @Yngvarfo
      @Yngvarfo 7 дней назад

      @@Jeremy-f3sNever Say Never Again was a special case, as it was produced, not by Broccoli, but by Kevin McClory, who had a long running dispute with Broccoli over the concept of the organisation Spectre, and the novel Thunderball which introduced them. Enough has been written about that dispute, but it explains why Spectre disappeared from the official series, and why Never Say Never Again is an outright remake of Thunderball.
      But in short, Connery appearing in a rival Bond film might be seen as sticking it to Broccoli.

    • @Jeremy-f3s
      @Jeremy-f3s 7 дней назад

      @@Yngvarfo Yes I'm well aware of the back story, Octopussy was the latest Moore film at the time and it was supposedly an attempt to steal box office from the official canon by pitting their pointless remake against it at the same time but I never really understood why Sean would want to be part of that. Apart from long being done with the character after Diamonds over ten years earlier he had no beef I could see, you're saying he had a grudge against Cubby Broccoli? Wasn't he dead by 1983 though?

    • @samoli11
      @samoli11 6 дней назад

      @@Jeremy-f3s Cubby died in 1995 actually, you can see he had an executive producer credit in Goldeneye and the film is dedicated to his memory. Though if you ask me, Derek Meddings should have gotten a dedication as well seeing as it was his last model effects work before his death as well.

    After this movie S.C was in a contract squabble with the producers . He came back for Diamonds are Forever, then said he would never do another one. In the 80s a director approached him to reprise his Bond. He agreed but the producers who owned the rights to Flemmings books, successfully prevented the new movie from using the trademark Bond theme and a slew of other iconic Bondisms.
    The one thing the producers didn’t have was the rights to the”Thunderball” book. So the new movie was basically a re-imagined Thunderball movie. When they were contemplating the name of the movie, they chose Mrs.Connery’s suggestion - Never Say Never Again. She kind of punked her husband because he had said years before that he would never do a Bond film again.

    Though the next film in the series, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969) is unique as it stars the only (so far) Aussie Bond.

    It isn't a helicopter, it's an autogyro (they are very different things, the main lifting rotors aren't powered by an engine).
    My friends grandad Ken Wallis helped develop them in the 60's and built the one used in this film.

    This is when the Bond films started drifting into formula parody of the same sort as Austin Powers. The following film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is one of the best because it stuck to the Ian Fleming novels, as did those preceding "You Only Live Twice."

    Great reaction. The next film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is my Favorite. It stars George Lazenby, the only Australian actor to play Bond. Unfortunately was only in one film. He received a lot of backlash, being the first time that change actors in the series.

    On safe cracking a later Bond method is right out of a KGB method that used a radiation plate to see inside the tumblers. The KGB teams were often spotted because a side effect of the method left the team bald. Sound or feel can enable many to be cracked with some skill. There is a YT guy called the lock picking lawyer that you can check out if you want to really know how little security locks tend to give.

    Some neat stuff in this one, Coby. Volcano lair, space race sh*t. Sunken ship office. We finally meet our bad guy. The "autogyro" was a thing before we knew what helicopters were supposed to be. There were several movies in the 30s. None were tricked out like Nellie. The rocket pistol? Never worked out. Kind of sucky. Nancy Sinatra. Extortion? One of the "Es" in SPECTRE. Nice hanging with you.

    Please continue to watch them in chronological order. The director of You Only Live Twice was Lewis Gilbert, whose style was bigger than previous directors, with wider angles, landscapes etc. He went on to direct two more/Moore Bond films. Don't worry, the use of green screens diminishes over time.

  • @Xandaca

    Enjoyed the reaction as always - hope the plan is still for Coby to watch the entire series, though there are certainly a few lesser entries on the way. Regarding the futility of Bond going through the wedding, a big difference between Bonds then and now is that the classic films were made in a time when international travel was far more exclusive, so exposure to foreign cultures was much narrower. The Bond films therefore served not just as travelogues, but as gateways to those cultures: here, the Japanese wedding, sumo, ninjas, etc. while Thunderball had the junkanoo, Goldfinger had the long drives through the Swiss alpine passes, and so on. These early films in particular usually focused on a single country, whereas later entries, as airline travel became increasingly accessible, jumped between myriad countries in a more superficial manner. This makes the Connery films valuable snapshots of nations at a certain period in time, even if they were certainly not above going more outrageous for the sake of entertainment - think the gypsy fight in FRWL, or Bond, uh, turning Japanese here.

    No one anywhere on earth would ever fall for Bond's fake-Japanese "disguise", especially actual Japanese people themselves. He looks like a bad Vulcan from a Saturday Night Live skit about Star Trek than a Japanese man. That disguise is so hilarious! And as soon as he starts to climb the volcano, Bond's Japanese disguise mysteriously and instantly disappears.

    41:00 Yes, a lot of people have pointed out how Bond wouldn't be able to safely land the rocket. Clearly Bond intended on sacrificing himself for the mission. He just needed to make sure the American space capsule wasn't captured starting WWIII.

    This is when the movies started to get a lot goofier (and to deviate a lot more from the books) - except for Lazenby's turn, a style that would continue through the Moore era and into the first Dalton one.
    One voice should be familiar to you: Nikki van der Zyl, whose voice you hear over Mie Hama, did the same for Claudine Auger in Thunderball, Shirley Eaton in Goldfinger, Ursula Andress in Dr. No and Eunice Gayson in both Dr. No & From Russia with Love.
