I wouldn't say so. I mean the 5th book takes place when Annie and Ty are 23, however the 2nd book in the series ( A Slice of Heaven) does offer some backstory to them at 16/18 and how they bonded/become a couple so I would say it's optional to read.

Yes, he is a nice character. Romantic angle is not the only relationship one can have to show care and affection. Annie has heart for Tyler.
Before I even finished the show ( which I did in one day) I already was looking up the books and I'm so glad that book 5 is all about them!
