I'm a big fan of Billie's music. She uses so much space, silence, and nuance. Many people are afraid to be that vulnerable and exposed. This song is beautiful.
They should listen to more soft jazz like Julie london , Norah jones Etc and MANY indie singers and stfu 😊😂 music shouldn’t be always upbeat and often disco pop mess .. finally in pop music someone different. After many years , the last one it was Norah jones in the early 2000s with this soft music and she was even more soft and jazz .
I always appreciate your explanation of technique! I'm 68 and not a Barbie fan, but one rainy day I went to see the movie (mainly for the popcorn). Who knew it would be about Barbie having an existential crisis? It was a little silly and funny but poignant. I love Billie anyway but this song is lovely and so fitting for the movie.
60 year old here and I went to the movie mostly for this song, and ended up really enjoying the movie. Plus every line of this song is explained if you see the movie
Thinking of the lyrics, I realized she is talking about every human. Literally, what are we made for? What is our purpose? What will be our legacy after we are gone? Pure genius. I choke up every time I hear this. (72 YO Male)
How anyone can tear down this unique, gifted and talented young woman is beyond my understanding To me her voice is a beautiful lullaby , I’m sure some prefer a more aggressive singing style , but that’s not her comfort zone . Clearly you can hear that she has the vocal ability to soar , but she stays in that more vulnerable soft pocket . I think she’s amazing.
Ha, I would say you kind of ARE in her demographic. We all are. Once you go past the first 20 rows of screaming Gen Zers at the barriers of her live shows, there are a lot of "oldies" like us!
I'm younger than you at 38, but I also feel like it's perceived weird that I would be a huge Billie Eilish fan... But I've learned that good music is ageless and the people who refuse to check out good music because of weird perceptions are missing out. As Vessel from Sleep Token said "Life is dark. Life is bright. Life is ugly. Life is beautiful. Don’t get lost in genres, they’ll only disorientate you. Music is for everyone."
She HAS reviewed Aurora!!! Here are some links. ruclips.net/video/bGh2TSAYeCc/видео.html ruclips.net/video/NTEtMOqZQV8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/gRjYJ_K5240/видео.html
Really liked your review especially that the song has two meanings, one for the movie and one that takes on a larger meaning. Also I've notice that older people like Billie and they like to point out their age. This has been going on for a while…I'm 65!
I listen to this song about 15 times this morning and every listen through I cry more and more this song is just perfection actually I think Billie eilish is musical perfection
I remember watching the scene with this song in it and I nearly cried but when I listen to it separately I cry with how relatable it is to how I’m feeling . It’s so soft and ethereal and beautiful I love it as I feel like it gives it a lot of emotion but also makes me feel relaxed etc
Totally agree with you about singers who sing quiet or soft. I think it's an amazing skill. Another artist that spring to mind is Lisa Hannigan, especially in the film 'Song of the Sea'
Thanks again Beth, I'm no singer but I love your vocals coach reactions 😊billie eilish is phenomenal artist this song is heart breaking yet beautiful 😢😮😊she's the Kate Bush of today her and rain paris are my favourite artists ❤️ keep up the great work much respect Beth 🙏 🫡
Billie is several generations removed from the music I grew up on, but I think she’s absolutely brilliant. She strikes an emotional chord when I listen to her.
Thanks Beth, it was nice to see that this touched you and indeed it took you out of vocal coach temporarily! Says a lot about the Eilish's 🙏🏼 It really is a beautiful song and singing too
I agree with you Beth- I love 💕 it too. It relaxed me sooo much , especially when im feeling anxious. This kind of music makes me emotional and when the lyrics are the same emotional intensity really gets me..
I'm still not a big BE fan. Just a personal taste thing. I used to claim she was horrible; but a number of months ago I watched your "What Makes Billie Eilish Great" video, and ever since, I at least recognize her talent and can appreciate her stylistic choice. This song though, I like it! Maybe I'm getting less 'stuffy old man'! Thank you for sharing and analyzing, Beth!!! 💚💜
Love your videos, so interesting! Was wondering if you've ever listened to Sumie (Nagano)? I especially love her singing Så Du Kan (live and direct) One of my favourite singers of the modern era.
Fun fact (unrelated to the video) In the Disney movie 'The Jungle Book.' The voice of the fun loving bear Baloo was originally supposed to be voiced by *Louis Armstrong.* Now, he has a scheduling conflict with a prior contract that was irreconcilable so he was unable to take the role and it was recast. I think we can all agree Phil Harris did the role justice BUT... before they found out he couldn't do it, Louis Armstrong did make a recording of his characters big song, 'Bear Necessities.'

Weirdly, she sang this live for the first time at Lollapalooza on Thursday. Lollapalooza? It shouldn't have worked, right? But it was stunning, of course. It's on YT somewhere if you want to check it out.
Your opening comments about the shift in production technique to clean and simple struck a chord (pun intended) with me. A number of my favorite artists started with that sound and when they became famous switched to an orchestrated sound and I lost interest in their music. The best example I can think of is kd lang. In my opinion, her David Foster productions diminished the effectiveness of her voice to resonate. Finneas and Billie Ellish's "What was I made for?" puts Billie up there with kd's 2010 Olympics version of Hallelujah as two of the greatest examples of the the voice as a musical instrument. Thank you so much for your analysis of the elements that make singing voices do what they do!
Would love to see you react to Stray Gods!!!! It's a roleplaying MUSICAL GAME! You basically make choices along the story that influence the outcome, and there's also some crazy good songs along the way, BUT WAIT!!! THAT'S NOT ALL!!!!! You also make choices DURING the songs, changing how it sounds, changing the lyrics, and if there's another character singing with you, it changes their response!!!!! The songs are amazing, if you're gonna react to them individually, i recommend: The Ritual (by Merle Dandridgle, Laura Bailey & others), Challenging a Queen (by Laura Bailey & Mary Elizabeth McGlynn) or maybe It's Time (by Laura Bailey, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, Ashley Johnson & Janina Gavankar). You may find different versions of those songs when you search for it, and that's because there is! Remember, in this game, your choices change the songs, so there are many possible versions of a single song (there are 4 official albums out right now, each a little different from the other) But that's why the best way to experience it is to actually play the game! I think it actually could be fun if you took a look at all the versions of one of the shorter songs and compared! For that I recommend Adrift (by Laura Bailey & Ashley Johnson), It's Time (by Laura Bailey, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, Ashley Johnson & Janina Gavankar) or Phantom Pains (by Laura Bailey & Troy Baker)
Since you like reacting to live performances, there's some in an event about the game, if you search for "Myth & Music: An Evening With Stray Gods" you can find it, timestamps for the songs are in the comments section of that video!!
I’m not really the target demographic for the movie; I only saw it, and heard the song, recently. I love how willing Billie and Finneas have been to talk in detail about how they created the song. I found this segment fascinating: ruclips.net/video/mewdcHIvMmA/видео.htmlsi=PDbizE5vHQYQJjA1
Beth appreciate if you react to our favourite singer Dame Shirley Bassey singing #As Long As He Needs Me# from the musical Oliver live perfomance at the London Palladium the year 1961.
Please consider this Peter Gabriel song for your next video: ruclips.net/video/Kb-440pnDA8/видео.html The video for this song was originally broadcast with this live version, but I've been unable to find the video with it on YT. The video is an excellent companion to the song, but personally, I don't like the version of the song you can find on YT with the video as much as this one.

i know this is a deeply personal question Beth, but Did you recently have a Child? before you looked like a cute girl now you look like a beautiful woman i cant explain it other than you seem to be more fulfilled....
Autotune isn't some magic technique to somehow make a bad singer good. If you sing off note and autotune it, it won't suddenly be the right note. The voice obviously loses its quality and gets distorted when you change the pitch. There's no way an autotuned voice would sound this good, while preserving the natural qualities of the breathy and humming voice.
clearly you haven't heard her fuller voice, before fame she sings like how everyone does, but ever since her fame risen, her breathy vocals are what made her quite unique since there's only a few that does that, but now, she switches on both breathy and belty chest voice vocals to emphasize emotions. She does have vocal talent as breathy voice needs so much control to stay and keep your breath for long phrases.
If you think about this song in another perspective celebrities are like barbies in a way because they are always being controlled by what they are wearing and how they look like when they perform on stage or act in a tv show or movie is very specific because it's being selected and constructed by media producers and directors and even fans because they pay to watch films and to shows which we criticise and debate if we like or hate a certain thing but sometimes people say they don't like something just because their friends say they don't like that certain thing so they can be validated and like by other people what I like about billies meaning in the song and the barbie movie is that you don't need to be validated by everyone and you can be your own person and create your own purpose in life🥹
I'm a big fan of Billie's music. She uses so much space, silence, and nuance. Many people are afraid to be that vulnerable and exposed. This song is beautiful.

BTW You've grown Beth. You're great
She did sing this song at Chicago Lopalooza last week with the video above her. Your video made me appreciate how difficult to do this is.
Hope you can check out the voice of the late Robert . Palmer , he has incredible raspy voice , that's totally underrated.
Que canción y que voz tan dulce 🍡 hasta la coach la escucho como un caramelo 🍬 bien Beth 👏👏🍀🍀

You should react to the live Oscar 2024 performance, they had to shorten it a little but it’s beautiful!!
Singing like this is similar to riding a bike slow; more energy and less control.

I personally prefer your (Beth) voice and singing of this song over Billie's sweet but uneventful voice. IMHO.
React to abby carters version of this song on American idol - it’s 10x better
I liked Beth's version better :)
I've never been a fan of her voice. It just seems very breathy with very little power. I know that can be good, but I just don't care for it.
@EllieFour Good thing I'm not an artist. It's all a matter of perception. Not everyone likes her voice, and you don't have to like mine.

You stomped over the "not what he's made for"...boyfriend bit! F-sake!

She doesn't have vocal talent so she relies on trying to sound out of breath while humming and then lets autotune deal with it in post.
So wrong!!
@shambhav9534 there for sure is pitch correction but I agree she doesn't 100 percent rely on that correction to hit these notes
